chick-fil-a sandwiches and 50 rounds of ammunition? >> reporter: tony perkins to cable channel and viewers watching live across the country hammered the southern poverty law center which has spent decades fighting hate groups like the kkk. >> corkins was given a license to shoot an unarmed man by organizations like the southern poverty law center that have been reckless in labeling organizations hate groups because they disagree with them on public policy. >> reporter: corkins had volunteered at a u street center for gay, lesbian and transgendered people. he allegedly said, "i hate your politics" before opening fire and wounding the operations manager at the frc, but gay advocates have quickly condemned the violence and were just as quick to condemn perkins' words. >> there's this implication that only the other side from him is in some way giving license to people to become violent when if you look at the

evidence, the statistics about hate crimes, that's very much demonstrated not to be the case. >> reporter: corkins shuffled into court in a plastic jumpsuit ill at ease and staring repeatedly out into the gallery at a crowd of reporters. he faces a federal charge of interstate transportation of a firearm and ammunition and a d.c. charge of assault with intent to kill while armed. in the meantime shooting victim leonardo johnson is recovering in the hospital. perkins says he is hailed across the world as a hero for wrestling the gun away from corkins. >> still kind of groggy and he said, "this hero business is hard work." >> reporter: corkins faces neither terrorism nor hate crimes chans so far, but if he is -- charges so far, but if he is convicted of the current charges, he could face nearly a half century in prison. first, though, a psychiatrist will have to certify he is competent to stand trial. bruce leshan, 9 news now. >> reporter: i'm scott broom

in southeast washington where the family of leonardo johnson, the employee shot yesterday at the family research council, say they are proud of his actions. chief cathy lanier visiting with virginia johnson, the mother of 46-year-old building operations manager leonardo johnson, to talk about how he's doing. >> i think it was -- what he did yesterday probably saved a lot of lives. he just told me ma, i've been shot and he said don't worry about me. i'm okay. >> reporter: johnson's mother says she's recovering from the shock that her son took on a gunman at the family research council and survived a wound to his arm and she is thankful for his actions. >> i couldn't be no prouder than i am. i thank god for everything. i thank god for him, too, because so many people could have been gone away from here today. he went walking around to see what he was doing. he was looking around at different things and he asked him a couple questions and it got into an altercation or something. then he pulled a gun out on him and then they got to tussling

and that was it. >> reporter: scott broom, 9 news now. >> there's more fallout tonight from the jerry sandusky sex abuse scandal. former athletic director tim curley and vice president gary schultz are accused of not telling a grand jury sandusky may have been abusing boys on campus in '01. in a hearing today the lawyers tried to clear their clients. the penn state trustee was in court for the proceedings. he's worried about the continued negative publicity. >> the judge rules this is going to trial, then this is going to continue to stay in the news and that will impact the students at penn state. that will impact the alumni at penn state. that will impact penn state community. >> as for sandusky, he's still in solitary confinement. he's scheduled to be sentenced next month. now to campaign 2012, where mitt romney was hit with more questions about his taxes today while trying to talk about medicare. romney rolled out a white board to show the difference between

his medicare plan and what president obama wants to do. he says the president's healthcare reforms will leave medicare bankrupt in a decade, but he got a little disagreement on that. >> as the seniors in america understand what the president's plan is doing to medicare, they're going to find it unacceptable. >> romney was asked about claims he did not pay taxes in some years. he says he's paid his taxes every year at at least a rate of 13%. president obama's campaign is telling romney to prove it. gop vice presidential candidate paul ryan will be in our neighborhood tomorrow. the wisconsin congressman is scheduled to talk at west springfield high at 3:40 in the afternoon before. that ryan is pledged to speak at an event in glen allen, virginia. two deputies are dead, two others wounded after a shootout early this morning in la place, louisiana. apparently a gunman opened fire on a deputy working traffic detail. we don't know why. lawmen tracked down the suspect to a nearby trailer.

the gunmen ambushed the deputies, killing two, injuring another. five suspects are in custody. now a devastating scene in south africa, police firing on a group of striking miners. we have to warn you some people might find this video disturbing. [ gunfire ] >> this scene playing out at a mine in south africa where the workers have been on strike for days now. eyewitnesses say some of those miners carried machetes and clubs, a few might have had guns and they refused orders to dispersion. some of them rushed at the riot police and that's what led to the barrage of gunfire. no definitive numbers on casualties. at least one eyewitness reports seeing 18 bodies on the ground. a followup to a 9news investigation. two women behind bars right now and investigators say they posed as insurance agents and then made off with personal information from public employees. earlier this week arlington

county police put out a warning to its officers. tonight peggy fox reports the warnings are going out right here in d.c. >> reporter: does this look like someone who is selling insurance? a bunch of police officers and now firefighters apparently thought so and now union fire officials in d.c. are warning their members about cintia pedone and dawnetta underwood who are charged with id theft and racketeering after allegedly scamming atlanta police officers out of their personal information. the president of the d.c. firefighters fighters union put an alert on -- firefighters union put an alert on their website saying the same two females have visited many d.c. firehouses trying to sell is up mental insurance policies. atlanta police say they -- supplemental insurance policies. atlanta police say they were posing as aflac insurance representatives. cintia pedone posted a picture of herself with fishnet stockings and a bulletproof

vest standing inside what appears to be part of the drug enforcement unit of the metropolitan police department. mpd's union leader wants to know why the women were let in. >> why was a private contract or company even if they were legitimate, what were they doing in a government building, selling inside a government building? my understanding is that's prohibited. >> reporter: a source tells 9news the two women met with park police officers in april and that they were actually listed as aflac representatives at that time. the source says one officer even bought a policy which was legitimate. however, now atlanta police say they aren't legit. atlanta investigators contacted the women's alleged supervisor mr. ugana unonquo who lives in clinton, maryland, and told him he wasn't authorized to deliver personnel in this manner.

he would not confirm whether he sells insurance or has any connection with the two women. he did tell me it would come out soon and promised to call me back with more information. he still hasn't. while some local officers and firefighters may be worried their personal information may have been stolen, union leader kris baumann says the mpd doesn't even have the officers to investigate. >> the individuals that would be working this case are probably out right now somewhere writing a parking ticket on somebody's car. all that training and investigatory knowledge is being used in a way we feel is inappropriate and in this case it's come home to roost for us. >> reporter: he says because the department is short 400 officers detectives are being redirected. >> even so the question we'd like to have answered tonight is were these two women aflac representatives or were they not? tuesday the vice president for corporate communications told us the women arrested in atlanta were not working for aflac, but now she's telling us something different. she said she didn't say that

wikileaks founder julian assange has been granted asylum in ecuador. now the question is can he get there? assange remains holed up in the ecuadoran embassy in london. he turned to ecuador for help after britain's supreme court ordered him deported to sweden where he faces sex assault allegations. british police threatened to raid the embassy and arrest assange if they have to. >> lovely, lovely weather out there for most of us, live look right now. anny hong will be around in a second for your full forecast including a weekend that may not be quite so lovely.

customs officials in california seized more than 20,000 knock-offs designer shoes. the agents say the real versions have a suggested retail price of 18 million bucks. theresa garcia reports from long beach. >> reporter: they look like ultra luxurious christian loui

vittons, but they're not. >> they're not the greatest, but they're better than some of the counterfeits we've seen. federal customs officials seized five shipments of the fancy footwear and brought them to this warehouse in long beach. the shoes have made in china stickers and the brand names are different, but they do have red soles which violates the french designer's trademark. >> it goes down to the loss of sales taxes on these things. it's not a victimless crime. >> reporter: loui vittons are popular among the rich and famous. the cavs sex in the city added to their allure -- the cast in sex in the city added to their allure. a pair can cost more than $1,000. custom officials say this many real loui vittons would be worth $18 million. >> these could have gone to smaller retail outlets, maybe plea markets or to unauthorized distributors. >> reporter: these shoes will

leesburg, 84 in gaithersburg, 83 in fredericksburg. rappahannock has cooled down to 79 degrees, so temperatures are falling. silent radar picture has been very quiet because of high pressure dominating the region. that will change as a cold front approaches late tomorrow. we'll be nice a little longer, then stormy, very pleasant tonight, friday morning starting off with pledge is i of sunshine. friday afternoon and evening -- plenty of sunshine. friday afternoon and evening some big storms are possible and much cooler this weekend. tonight we're expecting clear skies, maybe a few clouds. tomorrow morning a brilliant start to the day, but don't let that fool you. by afternoon some clouds will increase ahead of the cold front coming through, especially north and west of town. you can see we'll see showers pop up and also some thunderstorms. some of the storms could be strong to severe. the best chance for severe storms will be south and west of town tomorrow. that is where we are under a slight risk for severe storms

welcome back. you hate to see this sign when you pull up to the pump, 9.89 a gallon at a shell station in green bay, wisconsin. it's been fixed now to a slightly less unpleasant 3.89 a gallon, no word whether somebody bought the full priced petrol. in the mailbag tonight a serving of what i call vice president joe biden is ungaffable. most folks shrug it off when he does it again. peter says that maybe true but it's not a good thing. the romney campaign says it wants to unshackle the banks. biden's response was unshackle the big banks and you will shackle the middle class. a few tweets later it becomes unchain wall street and they're going to put you all back in chains.

joe may be less than artful, but his point was well taken. under the prior regime bank practices left many americans tied down if not literally in chain. going back to that regime without consumer protection means chancing the same results. then on the shooting at the family research council from our good friend john in chantilly. all things equal shouldn't there be a hate crime here somewhere? that is certainly the contention heard today from the frc leadership. we'll see if that pans out. remember the suspect's mental situation is in serious question, but whatever the case another good friend deb in arlington says what the heck is going on? shootings every week by some nut case or inflamed citizen, over what, why? all i know is violence begets more violence. we all may not agree on things, but civil discourse is always a better way to go. maybe i'm being idealistic, but compromise can be reached without a gun. sure, you're being idealistic,
