. this is 9news now. it was 28 years ago this weekend that virginia state trooper johnny rushbowman answered the door of his home and was stabbed more than 40 times before he died. his murderer never caught. there's a renewed effort to solve this case. a new $50,000 reward is offered this week in hopes someone will come forward after all this

time. gary nurenberg is here with what remains the only unsolved murder of a virginia state trooper. gary. >> reporter: someone killed the trooper and got away with it, anita. the murderer left evidence behind, though, and technology has come a long way since 1984. new techniques and old evidence have now come together to give investigators a sense of optimism. the 31-year-old trooper had left the marine corps to join the virginia state police. was married with a 2-year-old daughter when he answered just after 4:00 in the morning the pounding on his door by someone claiming to be from the power company. >> it was the fact that a person with a knife had multiple stab wounds to the chest and throat and neck. >> reporter: bowman's wife called police at 4:18 a.m. . >> manassas city police were on the scene and were able to track the assailant from the home across the parking lot and then

following bloody foot tracks up the sidewalk to a cul-de-sac. there they lost track of him. >> reporter: he left evidence, size 12 or 13 footprints, a wig. >> it does give us advantages to look at evidence against. especially 28-year-old evidence. we've been conducting dna tests and we have been resubmitting some samples of evidence. >> reporter: and this week officers have been handing out bulletins asking for anyone to come forward with information. >> absolutely there's reason for optimism. there is someone out there that can provide that little piece of the puzzle. >> reporter: his 2-year-old girl is 30 now, has built a facebook page tribute to a dad she barely new. an invitation to his friends to let him know about her father. an invitation for anyone that knows anything to please help.

the bottom line, someone has gotten away with murder for 28 years. family and fellow law enforcement officers say enough. they're convinced someone can help solve this and want that phone call. anita. >> let's hope that is the case. gary, thank you. we're also following breaking news this friday night. police are investigating what can only be described as a bizarre death in prince george's county. ken molestina with more. ken. >> reporter: yes, you know, anita, this one really is bizarre. right now there is a dead would be robber and injured cab driver and a police investigation trying to get to the bottom of all of it. now let's get you up to speed. a cop happened along a smokey cab at about 5:00 today. the cab driver was injured and burned by what he described as a liquid that was thrown on him by a passenger trying to rob him. the cops looked inside that cab and they found that would-be robber dead in the back seat. the man may have spilled the mystery liquid on himself causing him to die. now, the cab driver was taken to the hospital, treated for minor

burns. meanwhile prince george's county police are investigating the death. we don't know who any of these men are, anita, or what that liquid in question was. still a very much developing story, and we'll let you know more as we find out. >> okay. lots of questions, ken. inside the packed gymnasium at west springfield high, one heck of a pep rally. an overflow crowd came to cheer with wisconsin republican paul ryan, mitt romney's running mate for the race in the white house. he told reporters it's time for a change. >> do we want to stay on the path that president obama has placed us upon? i take that as a no. the problem is too many politicians in washington, like president obama, have been more worried and concerned about their next election than they have about the next generation. [ cheers and applause ] >> ryan said president obama inherited a bad economy, but his

policies have only made matters worse. at one point two hecklers tried to interject. mitt romney showed tax bills. the numbers indicate he paid a larger percentage of his income in taxes in the past two years than his running mate, mitt romney. the republican national convention just 10 days away, and police in tampa are getting ready. law enforcement officers from all over are in town to help them out. they showed off their tool, training and patience in front of this crowd of people. >> we don't anticipate things will get out of hand. they're identifying those individuals that are bent on disruption and destruction and getting them out of the crowd immediately. there's going to be arrests. there's going to be some disorder on a very small scale is our anticipation. >> that's the police chief. and she says she plans to handle

protestors with restraint. they hope to learn lessons from minnesota's struggle with demonstrators at the rnc four years ago. some scattered storms popping up in our area. anny hong joins us with the weather center with more plus a look at how the weekend is shaping up. i got caught in one of the downpours tonight. >> hopefully you had your umbrellas. we expected these storms and scattered showers to come through tonight ahead of a cold front. you'll really notice a big difference tomorrow and for your weekend where temperatures are really going to drop. check out the live doppler 9000 ac where you can see we still have some scattered showers in the area. we did have a couple severe thunderstorm warnings out on the eastern shore, but now those have all expired and we're basically seeing light to moderate rain. you're maybe seeing some heavier downpours just south of wheaton and just in the potomac area. it may be coming down a little stronger. we do see good storms eastern shore where you see all of the

lightning strikes on the doppler. if we zoom on in, we did have a couple severe thunderstorm warnings but those have all been dropped. right now we're seeing light to moderate rain. tomorrow temperatures will bottom out in the 70s as you're waking up. by 11:00, we'll still be in the 70s. in fact, over the next few days, we're going to be below average. it may feel like fall come this weekend. we'll take a look at your full forecast when we come back. anita. >> thanks, anny. some women in the takoma park area feeling strange. this after a man was trying to shoot video up skirts. a man pretended he needed directions but he continually brushed his bookbag against a woman's leg. she tried to get away, but he kept following her. >> it's scary to think that we live around this. and this is going on in my community. >> get this. the same guy apparently tried to do the same thing to the same

woman on eastern avenue on wednesday. she looked down and saw a cell phone camera looking back up at her through a hole in the bag. police are trying to catch up with him but only have a vague description to go on. two u.s. military trainers are dead after being gunned down in afghanistan. the shooter was an afghan man whom they were training to be an officer. this kind of attack is becoming a far more common threat. >> reporter: american forces in afghanistan e becoming more frequent targets of well trained terrorists. that's because increasingly the people doing the killing are the very people the u.s. is training. on friday, just after a graduating afghan police officer received his weapon, he turned it on his trainers, killing two members of u.s. special forces. the attack happened in a village in western afghanistan, just one of the areas where u.s. troops are training afghan security forces. but it was not an isolated

incident. in 2012, 12 americans died at the hands of their supposed allies. last year, the number doubled. so far this year, 25 have been killed. lance corporal greg buckley was one of them. the 21-year-old was shot and killed last week by an afghan police officer as they sat down for a meal. two other marines also died. >> at the end of the day what happens, my son trained somebody to murder him. >> reporter: the pentagon says one in 10 of these attacks is the work of the taliban or other terrorists. the rest are blamed on afghans who are looking for some sort of retribution against the west. still nato leaders say such attacks are rare. as for friday's shootings, there are few answers. >> you have no findings yet yet in terms of what the reason for this threat. >> reporter: most american troops are expected to leave afghanistan in 2014. randall pinkston, cbs news, washington. >> just hours after friday's

attack on the american forces, there was a second shooting involving an afghan soldier. two troops were injured. the members of an all female punk rock band from russia will be spending the last two years behind bars. their crime, a performance where they called on the virgin mary to throw the russian president out of office. protestors dressed in mask just like the band to show their support saying the sentence was too harsh. virginia now confirms two adults in the commonwealth have west nile virus. 28 people across the country have died from this disease so far this year. surae chinn has more on how you can protect yourself and one man's story of survival. >> you can do a lot to prevent a mosquito bite. first by wearing bug spray and long sleeves and the health department says get rid of the standing water. they recommend this. mosquito dunks. and what you want to do is get rid of all of the standing water

for breeding grounds for mosquitoes in your flower pots, kid ee pools and what have you and especially your downspouts. what you want to do is tie a string around the downspout and the mosquito dunk so it doesn't wash away in the rain. >> i think insects rule. >> reporter: this entomologist is a mosquito expert. he studies and collects data, but he's also a walking miracle from a mosquito bite that nearly killed him last august. >> i was walking my dogs at 4:30 in the morning. >> reporter: it took days for a diagnosis. >> i went to the hospital with a fever. >> reporter: until more severe symptoms started showing up. >> i started having seizures and they induced me into a coma. >> reporter: he spent two months in the hospital and four months to learn to walk again. he still uses a cane, residual dz from the near-death experience. >> this is about how far up i can go. and to go back this way. >> reporter: despite the bite, he has no ill feelings. >> i love insects.

they're just so fascinating. >> reporter: the centers for disease control says the west nile virus is spreading faster than ever before because of the mild winter and rainy spring. while there are no human cases of west nile in northern virginia, there are plenty of cases of infected mosquitoes. >> we started collecting in week 22 and week 22 we had positives. we thought maybe it was a fluke. week 23 we had some samples. week 24 we had positives. and now we're up to about 19 mosquitoes per thousand are infected. >> reporter: he adds the mosquitoes that have killed in texas where they're doing aerial spraying are not the same species as the ones here. >> it's never come this way. i don't know why. but i am very glad. >> so are we. surae chinn reporting. most people infected with west nile virus will not get sick. they may not get any symptoms. 1 in 150 will develop severe

a correction to a story we ran at 5:45 this evening in our health alert. the kidney fund is holding free kidney health screenings right here in our area, but not tomorrow as we first told you. it runs from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 at the prince george's sports and learning complex in landover. but this happened on september 8th. attendees can get a variety of free health screens, participate in events like fitness demonstrations. there are prizes. a great event. the kidney action day is free and open to all. but, again, that's happening, saturday, september 8th. a couple's wedding day turns

violent when a guest unleashes his pit bull on the bride and then joins in the attack himself. not clear why this guy did it. and he's still on the run. the trouble started during the party after the wedding this past weekend in denver. reporter dominic garcia talked to the injured bride. >> reporter: it is the day every girl dreams of. >> it was terrible. it made a beautiful party go to something that i probably won't ever forget. >> reporter: but for brittany schultz, it would turn into a nightmare. >> it was miserable. i begged and pleaded with him to stop. bring the dog home. it's my wedding. don't do this. don't do this. >> reporter: it was the after party. brittany says joe navaro, a guest of the wedding an old friend flipped out and left the party. when he came back, he had a pit bull with her. >> and he said sick her. sick her. the dog drug me to the ground and shook me in his mouth. >> reporter: her husband was also attacked. >> joe stood there with the

leash in his hand laughing. >> reporter: but it wouldn't end there. a police report said he then started punching her with brass knuckles. it's not clear what set her off. he suffers from several mental illness and has spent time in a mental hospital. >> at one point in time he was a best friend. he was someone i thought i could trust. someone i thought would never let anyone hurt me. >> reporter: he is now on the run. and the last time she heard from him was this text. two more stops and i hit my death bed but i ain't going alone. >> i hope no one gets hurt the way i did or worse. >> dominic garcia recording. according to his latest facebook post, he says he's headed to boston but his friends actually think he might be in mexico hiding out with family. there's something about the healing power of waves and wind. we've all felt it. and this week the power was on display up and down the

shoreline in ocean city. more than 200 children with autism were there to attend the third annual surfers healing camp. a camp started by a surfer who discovered he could connect with his own autistic son this way by focusing on the ocean, the children's anxiety just seem to melt away. >> all the other kids i just grab them. we go. we shanghai them. we're pirates and we grab the kids and we go and they freak out. but something just magic happens out there. >> it's an amazing thing to see your child out on the surf board and so calm. it's so positive at the same time. it's just so overwhelming. >> surfers from hawaii and california joined those from the delmarva area to help put on this really cool camp. now we go way beyond hawaii for some fresh detailed pictures from the mars rover curiosity. these shots include a view from curiosity's landing site. another image shows marks on the planet surface made by blasts

from the rover's engines landing this week. curiosity is on a two-year mission to search for signs of past life on mars. i wonder what they're going to find. anny. >> definitely. we're looking at some scattered showers for this evening. we're talking about a cold front coming through. and we still see scattered, more heavier amounts of rain are east of us towards the eastern shore. and that's where all of the lightning has been taking place. we had had a couple of thunderstorms out there. you can see the entire district and the beltway looking thoroughly wet. some more heavier amounts of rain where you see the yellow and oranges just south of fairland. also now just passing upper marlboro is the downpour we saw go through. right now our michael and son weather camera of the capitol on this friday night, 75 degrees under light rain. dew points have risen to the lower 70s. winds are northeast at around 8 miles an hour. temperatures now mid 70s

downtown. 70 in leesburg. 68 in martinsburg. so the rain helping us cool down quickly. here is the cold front that went through. behind the front is dryer and cooler air. saturday morning maybe some left overshowers. afternoon, though, sun and clouds. so wake up in the afternoon if you don't want to deal with wet weather. by saturday night the humidity will drop, and we're looking to be cool. maybe unsettled for sunday. so showers move off to the east and then in the morning the best chance for showers, again, will be south and east of town. but by the afternoon, we should see a mixture of some sun and clouds. it will be really nice saturday night. sunday will be partly cloudy conditions. and we do have a chance for some showers as another area of low pressure could develop giving us some unsettled weather. overnight, mostly cloudy and mild with some showers. lows in the lower 70s in downtown to lower 60s outside the beltway. saturday morning mostly cloudy and mild. a few showers possible. the good news is air quality is code green which is good. today's air quality was not so

have you laughed today? and now 9 sports with dave owens, the best sports in town. >> reporter: well, we said the ravens had some things to work on after winning their first pre-season game. but head coach john harbaugh was adequate saying his team needed to be more consistent across the board. let's see how things went tonight. this game is still going on. about a minute to go. 20-12. the lions leading it. but joe flaco has been solid. matt stanford has thrown for 184 yards. how about the redskins? second pre-season game is tomorrow night. of course heading on to chicago, mike shanahan says expect the starters to play. 30-35 plays. we'll see more exotic coverage
