so wealthy tax payers get a tax break. bp hope successful countering that medicare will be protected for seniors and people close to retirement. drew levinson begins our coverage tonight. >> reporter: paul ryan went to a retirement community in florida and got a little help from his 78-year-old mother. >> i want to introduce you to my mom. >> reporter: the republican vice presidential candidate promised seniors they would not lose their medicare under a mitt romney administration. ryan accused the president of cutting hundreds of billions of dollars from medicare to pay for his health care reform. >> we will restore the promise of this program and we will make sure that this board of bureaucrats will not mess with my mom's health care or your mom's health care. >> reporter: ryan came up with the gop budget plan that would shift medicare to a voucher- like system. democrats claim, that would bankrupt the program, but his words resinated with many

senior voters. >> got to do something, otherwise going bankrupt. there's no way we can keep it the way it is now. >> reporter: others in florida disagree. >> i'm getting all fired up. >> reporter: in new hampshire, president obama defended his plan. >> my plan saves money in medicare by cracking down on fraud and waste and insurance, company subsidies, their plan makes seniors pay more so they can give another tax cut to millionaires and billionaires. >> reporter: the president told voters election day is about two different approaches to the country's future. and he says the choice is clear. drew levinson, cbs news. >> congressman ryan held a fundraiser in the tampa area tonight. mitt romney is appearing at a series of fundraisers this weekend in massachusetts. and today was 9 news and the website for all the latest news this campaign season. police say a man was found beaten near eastern market this

morning. first police report a 29-year- old man was found unconscious in front of a house across the street where large crowds gathered. police say there's been a slight uptick in robberies and assaults. there have been six compared to four the same time last year. a virginia state police trooper is recovering tonight after his patrol car was struck by a drunk driver early this morning. police say trooper lenor pulled behind a tow truck at tyson's corner. the tow truck was removing a vehicle involved in a crash, that's when a car driven by christina of alexandria rear ended a patrol car. she's been charged with a dui. police are searching for a driver in a hit and run that left a homeless man dead. james ralph davidson was killed when a driver hit him. he was crossing the six lane highway on fairfax boulevard around 1:00 this morning.

arlington county police helped find the suv, a 2010 jeep that was involved in the hit and run, butt driver was nowhere to be found. tonight, police are still trying to sort out a bizarre taxi driver robbery attempt that ended with a would-be robber burned to death. it happened in beau we yesterday. police say the roche demanded money from the driver, struck him in the head and threw a flammable liquid which set the cab on fire. the would-be robber died in the blaze. it's back to school for some kids. students in the county are reveling in the last weekend before they head to the classroom on monday. as we report, many of them will now get a good head start to a successful school year. >> reporter: it was nearly a standing room only crowd at the showplace arena. thousands of students and parents attended the prince georgia county's back to school

fair. many were eager for monday. what's going to be your favorite thing at school? >> my teacher. >> reporter: really? you like your teacher? >> reporter: the early birds got free backpacks full of school supplies. others not so lucky. >> we came for the backpacks, they're gone. >> reporter: bags or no bags, students were jumping for joy and seemed ready for their abc's and their 1 it 3's. what's one plus one? >> two. >> two plus two. >> four. >> four plus four. >> eight. >> wow. >> school officials and vol here plenty of information on everything parents and kids need to know for a successful school year including before and after school programs. >> we're going to go tout tout a mechanic shop, show them how to change tires, change the brake pads, change the oil. it's practical things that men should know. >> reporter: i can get in on that? >> you sure can. i don't know how to change

>> reporter: baby they were might make 2012 a season of hope. >> let's what i'm talking about, baby. >> reporter: at first stadium, 9 news now. >> the terps open the season at home on september 1st against william and mary. we're getting closer to finding out where the home and the new home for the redskins training camp will be. a spokeswoman for richmond's mayor say a recommendation will be announced later this month. the redskins camp has been held for the last decade at the team's corporate headquarters in ashburn. in june the team's general manager, bruce allen and have governor bob mcdonald announced an eight-year agreement to hold a two-day preseason camps in richmond for eight years. just ahead on 9 news now tonight, how puppies are getting a second chance. they're scared. this is, you know, the home they came from was not a home. it was horrible. it was probably, you know, like a chicken coop kennel. >> nearly two dozen dogs have a

welcome back, a 19-year-old woman has been charged with a drunk driving after police say she struck and killed a man on interstate 95 and springfield early this morning. police say additional charges against carl johnson of wood bridge are pending. male driver had pulled on to the right shoulder and was standing next to his car when police say the 19-year-old hit him. police say johnson left the scene, but officials tracked her down. handfuls of puppies are getting a second chance of living a happy and loving life. the washington animal rescue league was called on to rescue 23 dogs, from a puppy mill in ohio. tonigh they're resting well

in our tim complaints their futures are just a little bit brighter. >> reporter: these 19 dogs are visibly in bad shape. they're suffering from skin diseases, eye problems and flea infestations. >> hi baby. >> reporter: all the result of a brutal life in an ohio puppy mill. >> he's very emaciated, hair loss, his eyes are weepy. >> reporter: many were still scared and shivering, now serving about to change for the better. >> they need to go through medical rehabilitation and behavioral rehabilitation, then we'll make them available to the public for adoption. >> reporter: the league has given these dogs a new temporary home inside their shelter in northwest dc. administrates say the puppy mill had hundreds of dogs packed into kennels. these puppies were neglected and allowed to fall ill. >> it's horrible. and ohio has no regulation at all. >> reporter: the road to recovery isn't going to be easy.

oh boy, what a sad circumstance on a highway in north carolina, authorities say a car smashed into a tractor trailer hauling beer on the north carolina interstate last night. spilling suds all over the highway. the rig was carrying nearly 43,000 pounds of beer. crews spent more than five hours cleaning up the mess on

interstate 85. no one was seriously injured, but the wreck caused major traffic trace wondering which beer it was. and what a sight in new york today, the air force thunder birds did a fly over as part of air force week. the famous team of jet planes flew up the hudson river on their way to the yankees stadium. they'll be back again sunday as they fly over the intrepid sea air and space museum and on monday, they'll fly over the mets game at citifield. we've had great skies here, i'd love a repeat i think people would say for tomorrow. >> today's high 86 degrees, degree shy of our average high. a lot of folks really enjoying this beautiful weather from middle of august, temperatures are very comfortable, and what's really made it comfortable is the lower humidity. we love dew points in the 50s. those are our friends. right now, a live look at our
