we begin with breaking news. medics are checking several passengers of a ride on bus after it crashed into a home. at least five people have been taken to a nearby hospital. details are still coming in, however we have been told that

no one was seriously injured. and as many as nine people were on the bus when it crashed into a home on avondale road near new hampshire avenue. this happened just before 11:00 this morning. two people were actually inside the home at the time of the crash, so we are working to find out if they were injured. we'll have more information coming up on 9news now beginning at 5:00 p.m. and of course on our website, wusa 9.com. we thank you r joining us, i'm j.c. hayward. mitt romney and his vice presidential selection are both on the road together. the republican ticket is working to sell its plan for dicare to voters in new hampshire. danielle nottingham has more on how the gop candidates and president obama both are trying to win independent voters. >> reporter: mitt romney teamed up with his running mate,

congressman paul ryan to talk to new hampshire voters. at a town hall meeting in manchester, romney hammered president obama. >> as opposed to having a president who thinks that government, that government creates our economy, are and allows it to grow, i am understanding that it is free people and freedom. >> reporter: with a week to go before the republican convention the gop ticket is trying to explain its plan for medicare. and with 14% of new hampshire residents over the age of 65, they had an attentive audience. >> medicare should be a guaranteed promise our seniors can count on. >> reporter: the obama campaign says the white house challengers are attacking the president on welfare and medicare because they are failing to make their case on the economy. >> they are throwing everything they can at the wall to see if it sticks. the latest approach is to try to challenge me on medicare.

>> reporter: the president says the romney ryan plan would eliminate preventative procedures, such as cancer screenings. >> governor romney and congressman ryan want to give seniors a voucher to buy insurance on their own. >> reporter: both campaigns are fighting this battle on the air waves. president obama hits the trail in ohio and nevada tuesday. danielle nottingham, cbs news, the white house. the romney campaign has a new ad that targets changes that president obama made to welfare. the president also has a series of radio ads focusing on paul ryan's medicare proposals. a man who police suspect was high on pcp, will likely face charges, once he recovers from being shot by officers. prince george's county police were called to barnaby laid in oxen hill -- lane in oxen hill

last night. police say they tried to talk to the man, he became combative. officers shot the man with a taser but that did not work. >> the suspect then made a threat that he was going to kill the officer, and that is when the officer created this distance and discharged his  service weapon. >> authorities say the man's injuries are not life threatening. summer break is over and it is back to the books for moo more than 12 -- more than 120,000 prince george's students. peggy fox reports. >> reporter: students heading back to class at greenbelt middle school seemed eager to see the brand new building. it was officially open in a ribbon cutting ceremony just before school started. >> seems awesome, having a great day. >> very excited.

>> i'm expecting everything to be new. in the old school, it was like a little messy and little bit old. >> reporter: there is a lot of positive vibe going on, thanks to the achievements made under the leadership of superintendent william hite, who is leaving to run philadelphia's school system. >> over the six years i have been here, more than three quarters of the principals have been replaced, and that's because of natural separations and retirements and individuals choosing to do other things. that has been the key to a lot of our success. >> reporter: greenbelt middle school spent several years not making progress. but under the direction of their new principal, appointed by superintendent hite, they have made progress. gains in reading and math scores. >> the numbers are getting up where we met our a.m.

o, which is annual measurable objectives, we have met all the targets so we are fully proficient. >> reporter: greenbelt middle school principal warren tweety says he is certain the school board will find someone qualified. the school board has until just 1, 2013 to name a new -- until july 1, 2013 to name a new leader. next monday classes begin in the district of columbia, frederick and montgomery counties in maryland. after labor day schools open in alexandria, arlington, fairfax and prince william counties. the speed cameras in school zones will be turned back on.

aaa says the county issued nearly 350,000 speed camera tickets during the last school year. now that is nearly $14 million worth of fines. the cameras will be turned on from 6:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. monday through friday. some university of maryland students are saying no to change. they have -- to no to chick-fil-a. they have said it does not represent the values embraced by the community. so far they have over 700 signatures. still to come when 9news now continues, fire crews out west are in a race against time. they are trying to stop a huge wildfire that is heading straight for thousands of homes. also a hit, the first lady

be prepared for extra noise overnight. norad will be having flight exercises over our region from 11:30 tonight until 5:30 in the morning. it is all routine training to test equipment, and to maintain emergency response time. the fighter jets provide air safety and security for the

entire country. one of the main runways at bwi airport is closing today, and it will stay closed for the next two months. that is so crews will be able to make repairs and upgrades. a bwi spokesperson says the closing should not affect travelers, except in bad weather. residents living around bwi might notice a change in flight patterns. the other runway will remain open during this work. first lady michelle obama is hosting a kids' state dinner. it will actually be lunch with more than 50 youngsters from across the country. they all created original nutritious school lunches. the children won the chance to eat with the first lady through a cooking contest. olga comes up next with the forecast. >> reporter: that's right. cloudy skies today.

swimmer diana nyad is close to the finish line. the 62-year-old is attempting to swim 103 miles from cuba to florida. she began her trek saturday afternoon and she has encountered rough seas and several jellyfish stings. nyad is making the trip in shark infested waters without a cage to protect her. this is her third attempt for the record. we wish her luck. firefighters are battling dozens of wildfires across the west. a fire north of sacramento is threatening thousands of homes. >> reporter: more than 1000 firefighters are trying to stop the fast moving ponderosa wildfire. helicopters are dropping water from the air and on the ground, crews are clearing brush, trying to keep the flames from reaching thousands of homes in the rural part of northern california. >> in this fire's path is directly headed toward many homes. >> reporter: the fire started

saturday, after a lightning storm. dry conditions are fueling the flames that cover more than 19 square miles. thousands of people being told to evacuate the area hope their home isn't next. the fire in northern california is one of dozens raging in the west. hundreds in idaho were forced to grab what they could and leave. a huge wildfire there covers over 130 square miles. near park city, utah crews put out flames that came dangerously close to homes and burned righted next to a major highway. and in washington state, better weather is helping crews get control over a 23,000-acre blaze. evacuated residents are now being allowed back into their homes. >> it is going to be a long time for the neighbors in here that

have lost their houses. i hope things get better for them, i really do. but for us, should i keep my umbrella handy? >> you are going to need it today, tomorrow and possibly wednesday. what is happening right now is we have the front off the coast. it is affecting florida, from the carolinas all the way up into the new england states right now, but it is going to continue to slide on south. for us right now, we are doing pretty good. we have you are overcast -- our overcast skies. that is holding down our temperatures at this hour. the michael and son camera shows winds fairly light out of the southeast so far today. temperatures aren't really budging too much. we should push the upper 70s

near 80 degrees, quite frankly that is going to be it for the remainder of the day. by 6:00, i think we are going to have more widespread showers and even maybe a few isolated showers and thunderstorms, so watch for that lightning to pop up, timing is not too good because the first pitch is at 7:00 this evening for the nats and some of that moisture will continue off and on. here's doppler radar. looking good so far near the beltway. for those that stayed off and took that beach vacation this week, it is damp and dreary at the shore but things will improve toward the middle of the week. it looks like we are going to be fixing -- sticking with a forecast today that will see several of these set up, already over the west virginia panhandle, i expect that to grow through the afternoon. lower 70s down toward our south, 72 out toward arlington.

we are looking at 75 for college park. in all, i think we are going to keep mainly high humidity. our dew points have been fairly moist for the overnight period and we have stuck with fairly high humidity over the afternoon. the moisture will come through in several bands, first this afternoon and evening, and then a little bit of a low overnight. tomorrow morning we start out dry. into the afternoon and evening tomorrow with daytime heating i think we'll have another opportunity for widespread showers and storms. highs today not so bad. we are comfortably into the lower 80s, upper 70s for most and we'll definitely see another mild night tonight, back down into the 60s in town, 50s north and west. keeping it code yellow for today, because of the showers and storms tomorrow. look for wednesday and thursday to show a slight increase, definitely going to see temperatures returning to normal in the middle range 80s.

j.c.? on hero central today, about 20% of students in dc public schools do not meet the reading skills. but a local nonprofit organization wants to change that figure and today i'm saluting for love of children. ten-year-old henry ortiz plays uno like a pro. in the meantime, he is trying to master his math homework. so he gets free tutoring, once a week, at for love of children. >> everybody's nice to each other. >> working with a tutor has paid off. >> i have improved my division, definitely. and how to multiply and divide and add fractions. >> for love of children serves 600 low income students in the district and west virginia. their goal is to give every
