breaking news tonight at 11:00. right now a 22-year-old police officer is dead. his partner just out of the hospital after they went after two men who they said tried to break into a car at a gas station. >> new tonight, we have surveillance pictures of at least one of the suspects. matt jablo is live where he's got the details. matt? >> reporter: derek, the search is very much on tonight for two men allegedly involved in a

police pursuit involved today, which lead to the death of a young prince george's county cop. prince george's county hospital center was emotional today after one of their own was killed in the line of duty. >> it just shows the courage and the dedication of these officers. >> reporter: it happened right around 1:00 this afternoon when two prince george's county cops riding in the same cruiser spotted two men in a car. the suspects and an attempted theft at a gas station earlier on in the day. >> the transmission of the location to the dispatcher. >> reporter: according to the police chief, the officers started pursuing the suspect's car, southbound on i-95. when for some reason right around here, the police car swerved off the road and slammed into a ditch. >> this is a very sad day. >> reporter: the officer who was driving was identified late tonight. as the 23-year-old morris, a two-year veteran with the police department and a member of the department's explore program as a teenager, pronounced dead at the

hospital, shortly after arriving. >> he loved this department and what he did for a living. >> reporter: the other officer joined the department just a year ago was treated and released for his injuries. >> this job is not an easy job by any means and it is dangerous in everything that we do just about. but these officers, they were dedicated to doing their duty and that's what they were doing was following up on the staff report. >> reporter: tonight, police have released a surveillance picture of one of the suspects. if you know who he is or where he is or if you have seen the car with a temporary tag that he was in today, you are asked to call 911 immediately. there's a $25,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest and conviction in the case. derek, anita? >> thank you so much. as he mentioned, they are really looking for these guys. if you have gotten information on the case, police want you to call crime stoppers. 1-866-tips. and tonight we are getting to listen to some of the audio this morning after the cruiser crashed into a ditch. first, you're going to hear

wusa9.com. just a recap, a prince george's county officer is dead tonight. his partner was just released from the hospital. around 1:00 this afternoon, the two men pursuing the car they believed was used in an attempted robbery while trying to catch up, they hurdled into a ditch. tonighlilooking for this man. again if you have any information, call crime stoppers. anita? >> we also have breaking news out of southeast d.c., derek. two adults and a child were shot in the 1600 block late this evening. all three were conscious and breathing. they were taken to the hospital. tonight police are not saying if they were caught or a possible motive for the crime. now from the section of fairfax county where they are trying to find the man who raped a 5-year- old girl which happened in the apartment complex near the intersection of manitoba drive.

and mitt romney called the race undefensible. however, they insist that they will stay in, saying it is not the first politician to suffer from foot and mouth disease. tonight at 11:00, d.c. police are pursuing a number of leads beating near eastern market. the victim, a 2-year-old husband and father. and still in serious condition tonight. police say that he left the tune-in bar and restaurant near closing time early saturday morning. hours later, they found them on the front porch of the home along north carolina avenue just blocks from their own house. and they have been badly beaten. >> it gives you a pause for a concern. i mean i tell people to keep their eyes open. to not walk around alone at night. >> someone used the credit card some time after the attack. police are hoping that security camera video will help them catch the culprit. well new tonight at 11:00,

casey anthony -- anthony's probation is released tonight. it is one year ago she began serving the probation for check fraud. she was acquitted last year of murdering her 2-year-old daughter caylee. tonight hollywood is mourning the death of comedian phyllis dillard. the 95-year-old passed away in her sleep thissing morn -- her sleep this morning. she was in her 30s when she tried her hand for comedy. known for her outrageous clothes, creating the persona of a housewife who made jokes about her fictional husband known as fang. he's the idiot. thinking that row verses wade is two guys in a canoe. >> the hollywood legend joined

them for 23 different television specials and three films in the 60s. they also starred in two tv shows in the 60s as well, but both did not last very long. however they came to the celebrity on the game circuit. always unhappy with the looks though. also becoming a poster girl for the cosmetic surgeries, undergoing more than a dozen procedures. one thing they never changed though is the signature. >> hollywood has also lost the film director whose career spanned three decades. that they jumped off the bridge yesterday. and in what appears to be a decide. they left a note to several loved ones. that was the biggest star in hollywood, which is denzel washington acing among their best known movie. top gun, true romance, and unstoppable. rosie o donald is recovering from a heart attack. the 50-year-old comedian blogged today that she feels lucky to be alive, experiencing sudden gnaw virginia and decided to do a little bit of a web watch on women heart attack symptoms. she took a few aspirins and

went to the cardiologist the next day. one of her arteries, 99% blocked. she's encouraging all women to know the symptoms of heart attack, which can be quite different from men. we'll talk about the warning signs. ladies, a heart attack can start as an experience of pain in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes that could go away and come back. and there can also be pain that radiates from the arm, back, neck, jaw, or stomach. shortness of breath is a symptom. you may also break out into a cold sweat or feel sick to your stomach, lightheaded, almost like the flu. the american heart association says if any of this happens to you, don't wait, call for help. the silver springs man was still sitting in his driveway when within a flash, a county bus turned up in his living room, making it into a bus stop. take a look at these pictures of sky 9. yes, that's a county ride-on bus and that is the front part of the house on the road. that's where the bus ended up at about 11:00 this morning. the homeowner was not hurt.

they were inside the home, but they were not hurt either. >> and they were from here. they needed to take the car out. i said who is this guy and then i went back to the car. boom. right in front of me as they took this taxi off. and from there they came out and said that they lost it there. >> it sounded like the house was crashing in. it sounded like an earthquake at first. when i saw the bus crash, i thought it was incredible. >> nobody expected anything like this to ever happen. folks on the bus only had minor injuries. but the house will need a lot of help. we had some storms earlier this evening, but now things have dried out. we'll find out what we can look for in the morning commute. topper shutt is out on the terrace. obviously that will be on top right here. not too bad really. you could see the fog develop overnight. that's one concern that we have for you. storms and showers, weakening up with just a couple of sprinkles left for you down to st. mary county. and nothing heavy.

today, camp romney and president obama. trading jabs today over taxes and medicare. up in new hampshire, mitt romney and paul ryan accused the president of taking over $715 billion away from medicare to pay for his health care reform law. >> medicare should not be a piggy bank for obama care. it should be a guarantee thing.

habits, especially as kids come back to school. 1,400 firefighters in northern california, battling a huge wildfire there, burning more than half a dozen homes. as they explain, firefighters and residents are hoping more friendlier weather conditions, but it's not looking very good. >> reporter: firefighters in northern california are using every tool they have to try to stop a fast-moving blaze, 170 miles north of sacramento. the ponderosa fire started over the weekend during a lightning storm. bone-dry conditions and temperatures near 100 degrees helped it spread quickly. it's an uphill battle for firefighters. >> the challenges are the heat, the terrain, very dry fuel conditions. the fire is releasing a lot of energy. >> reporter: the ponderosa fire is just one of more than 40 large-scale fires burning across the west. and what has been another reactive fire season. tough on firefighters as well as those forced to flea their homes. >> hi c.c. >> reporter: they live in one

of the 3,500 homes threatened by the ponderosa fire as they have just minutes to evacuate. >> you can see the glow from the fire. you could see the smoke. it looked kind of like a mushroom cloud. like when a bomb goes off. >> reporter: they don't know whether or not they still have a home to go back to. answers for her and thousands of others could still be days away. >> it has been overwhelming, very strong. and i pray every night that it is not there. to take my home. >> reporter: lighter winds and temperatures in the 60sover night should favor firefighters. the forecast for tuesday is sunny and 97. cbs news, shingletown, california. >> wow. >> they could use a break. >> yes, a little bit of the rain that we had today. that's good news for a part of the rockies. texas are getting showers. we have had pretty decent showers for the last couple of days. we need it. my yard is a little different color of brown. coming back to green. >> yes, just a little bit. now, we'll start with a look

outside. satellite picture radar combined. we'll zoom in now as you can see a lot of showers and clouds are hanging across the southeast. there's a front there as it will be here for, well, probably about two to three days as it will hang around. it's stationary with a little trough of the low pressure moving through earlier. we'll zoom in a little more. that's what triggered our line and showers and thunderstorms. it is now east of us. most of the showers and the storms are east of us with a couple of showers we showed you earlier. that's about it. that's one little thunderstorm watch here. and they will be staying north of hagerstown overnight to go into adams county and fulton county. live look outside. it is our weather camera. not too bad, but again a little patchy fog is possible for you late. look at the temperatures, down to 70 already. the high was 82. dew points, mid-60s. that's okay. winds are calm. and it will be rising. so we're looking at kind of a weird day tomorrow. grab your shades, but some fog is possible for the morning

commute. the afternoon shower or thundershower is possible. we'll have less activity tomorrow than today. and not hot all week. that's good news. we don't see any 90s through the week. in fact, very few mid-80s through the week. all right overnight, we'll say partly to mostly cloudy, cool again. some patchy fog. 58 to 68. winds are out of the northeast at about 5 to 10. by morning returning partly cloudy and pleasant. 60s and 70s with light wind. so dry in the morning and no showers in the morning. by the afternoon, we need to keep a chance of the shower or thunderstorm in. notice this though. highs are 80 to 85. winds are out of the southeast. a pretty nice day on tuesday. and we might need your umbrella and your shades. we'll break it down, 6 -- 76 to 80 by noon with a slight chance of the shower or thunderstorm. not very stable tomorrow. so more likely just a passing shower as opposed to thunderstorms. the next thee days, green,

green, green for tuesday, wednesday, thursday. and that was a little smaller. so the shower or storm is possible on tuesday and wednesday. but temperatures are great. low to mid-80s. 80s on wednesday, 84, 85 on thursday. a better chance of showers on thursday. still not a big deal. the next seven days. we're looking at friday. a leftover shower, but still holding in the mid-80s. you cannot beat that and then on saturday, they had drop in. i always reserve the right to remove that. only monday. temperatures in the mid-80s. but it will be nice in their 90s. >> we like it if it goes away. >> yes, that's why i put it on out there. >> yeah. it will be very nice. new tonight at 11:00. student survivors of the earthquake in japan are wrapping up their tour of the united states. and here in d.c., they are in our country to learn more about the events of 9/11 and hurricane katrina. the kids visited new york and before coming to d.c. as they hope to take home lessons from our tragedies here in the state to help cope with their own

before tonight's game, they were 8-4 over their arrivals with a five-game lead in the nl east. game one of an extremely important series tonight. and ian desmond with a two-run shot. his 18th of the year, putting them up 4-1 as they needed to rally back the top five. and not the rangers or the braves. but they needed to pick up their 21st home run of the season. this game is tied in the bottom 8th, loaded for the 1 -- for the $100 million man.

kinks. good thing that they will have two more pre-season games because they have a lot of work to do on both sides of the ball as they got back to work here today and trying to fix what is not working. rg3 looks less like the franchise quarterback tonight and more like a rookie, holding on to the ball for too long, trying to make things happen. but we heard how quick of a learner he is, as he plans to learn from them. and once you stop trying to make a play, that's when you start playing with fear, so i'm not going to play with fear and, you know, i will learn from that. to me it is very simple to learn from something like that. it is just something that happened in the game as you need to learn from it and move forward. >> and it will be lights out for the buffalo bills that cuts a veteran pass rusher today, sticking with their two younger guys. this would have been the 28- year-old's third year in buffalo as he finished the last two season on injured reserve. now, he was in the best shape of his career. so guys it will be interesting
