hospital shortly after arriving. >> he loved this department and what he did for a living. >> reporter: the other officer who joined the department just about a year ago was treated and released for his injuries. >> this job is not an easy job by any means. it's dangerous in everything that we do just about. but these officers were dedicated to doing their duty and that's what they were doing is following up on this theft report. >> reporter: this morning police are asking anybody with information about the two suspects in the case or about the gray acura with temporary tags that they were riding in to call 911 immediately. there's a $25,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest and conviction in the case. matt jablow, 9news now. police here in the district are investigating a shooting from southeast. two adults and a child were shot in the 1500 block of 19th street. all three were conscious and breathing when they were transported to the hospital. at this point police are not saying if the shooter has been caught. in fairfax county, police are looking for a man accused

of sexually assaulting a 5-year- old girl. >> investigators say she was attacked sunday night while she was on a playground near the intersection of lasheen lane and manitoba drive. gary nurenberg has more. >> reporter: the 5-year-old was playing in this common area of the complex surrounded by buildings with dozens of windows that allow residents to see what's happening here. monday evening it was filled with young soccer players and with parents closely watching their kids. >> when my child plays outside, i watch him around. so i am in the parking lot watching and -- [indiscernible] >> reporter: not all parents watch that closely. >> sometimes there's parents there. sometimes there's not. >> reporter: police monday evening handed out descriptions of the hispanic man who led the 5-year-old away as he led her to an apartment building where

she was assaulted. average build wearing a button down shirt. police hope the flyers will spark the memories of witnesses who may not have realized they were actually seeing a crime. >> the sight of a man holding the hand of a 5-year-old child might not immediately raise alarm bells. that's why we want to draw people's attention to this incident. >> reporter: as 9news watched, people were coming forward talking to detectives about what they had seen. for parents a lesson. >> don't take chances. there are too many craze people out there -- crazy people out there. >> reporter: this is apparently an isolated incident. police know of no similar assault. gary nurenberg, 9news. the smithsonian's hershorn gallery is scheduled this morning a day after a security guard killed himself in the basement of the building. no one witnessed the shooting and no one es was injured. the guard's name is not being released at this point. the museum was evacuated yesterday and remained closed for the rest of the day.

how do you explain this to an insurance adjustor. take a look at this video from sky 9, a home in silver spring. the homeowner was in his driveway. a county bus slams into his house. it was a montgomery county ride on bows. this happened at 11:00 yesterday morning. the homeowner wasn't hurt. his two sons were in the house at the time. they weren't hurt either. >> i said, is this guy not going to stop? i went back to the car. boom. right in front of me. the guy came out and said -- [indiscernible] >> sounded like the house was crashing in. i thought it was an earthquake at first. when i seen the bus, i was completely asounded. >> wow. -- astounded. >> wow. >> some commuters on the bus suffered minor injuries. 11 weeks from today voters will head to the polls and cast their vote for president.

in campaign 2012 monday, republican candidate mitt romney and his running mate paul ryan were in new hampshire continuing their push to win over voters in swing states. the g.o.p. ticket to town hall meeting. >> care ould be a guaranteed promise our seniors can count on. >> republican campaign accuses the president of taking $716 billion from medicare to pay for his health care reform law. president obama's campaign says that is not the case and he took the podium at the daily white house briefing to defend his record. >> everybody who has looked at this says what governor woman any is saying -- governor romney is saying is absolutely wropg. governor romney is approving this and saying it on the stump. >> president obama will head back out on the campaign trail today with events in ohio.

missouri congressman todd akin has until 5:00 to decide whether he will stay in the race for u.s. senate. after that it becomes much more difficult for republicans to replace his name on the ballot. he's getting some pressure to drop out by many including republicans because of his comments he made about rape victims being able to reject getting pregnant. john cornyn, chairman of the senate committee personally asked him to step aside but the congressman said he's staying in till the end. he told mike huckabee he's not the first politician to suffer from what he called foot in mouth disease. president obama has issue add direct warning to syria. don't use unconventional weapons are you could be facing the u.s. military. his warning is the first time he has publicly discussed using the american military in the syrian civil war. he says the use of chemical or biological weapons would threaten the entire region and that would be a red line for the united states. at 4:35, here's a look at some other stories making news

now. a wildfire in northern california is threatening three small towns. thousands of homes have been evacuated as the pond rosa fire is growing larger. the fire has burned more than 20,000 square miles and is just 30% contained. nearly 1900 firefighters are battling the blaze. phyllis diller is being remembered this morning. the 95-year-old comedian passed away yesterday in her sleep. the mother of five from ohio was in her 30s when her husband convinced her she needed to do comedy. known for her wild hair and her outrageous clothes, she created the persona of an eccentric housewife who made jokes about her fictional husband she called fang. >> i tell him that because of fang, the idiot who thinks roe vs. wade is two guys in a canoe. >> she was great. she got a big boost from bob

hope as you may remember. she joined from 23 television specials, three films, started to tv shows in the '60s. both were short lived but she became a regular on the game show circuit. you saw her on lots of them. always unhappy with her looks, she became the poster girl for cosmetic surgery. one they she never changed, that trademark laugh. a federal judge in texas has thrown out a lawsuit filed by bicyclist lance armstrong against the u.s. antidoping agency. the suit claims the agency lacked jurisdiction and violated his constitutional rights. this decision mes the antidoping agency can proceed with its case. it claims armstrong took steroids and blood boosters to win the tour de france every year from 1999 to 2005. our break from the summer heat is going to continue, at least for another day. olga is back at 4:39 to let us know possibly if there's going to be some rain this afternoon.

it is just about 4:41 now. it is time for the first your money segment. here are the said lines. the federal reserve is going to release the minutes from its august 1 meeting today. policymakers did not make any announcements of new measures to booth the economy at the meeting, though. investors will now be looking for clues about whether or not a sip reduce plan could be in the works -- stimulus plan could be in the works. wall street numbers, stocks slipped a little bit. sort of quiet summer trading for the day. the dow was down three and a half points. nasdaq dropped a third of a point. the 17500 -- s&p 500 three 100ths of a point. apple is worth about $623 billion which tops microsoft's previous record which was 14 years ago. apple's stock has hit new highs recently. investors wait for the launch of the iphone 5 and possibly a smaller, cheaper ipad. on the flip side facebook stock as we reported before has hit

another all time low. it closed below $19 a share which is worth less than half of the initial public offering back in may. well, it just got more expensive to fly. southwest airlines is raising prices on some round trip fares by ten bucks and several large airlines quickly mahed that increase. they say when southwest carries a lot of influence in fares because it flies a lot more passengers than other carriers. they keep raising fares because the cost of jet fuel is going up. nearly 50% of all doctors suffer some sort of burnout. >> we're back with that story and your weather first. keep it right here.

cover. mostly cloudy conditions around the region. a few of the sprinkles will continue to come through. we will get that clearing, though, through late morning and early afternoon so you definitely want your sunglasses today but you're also going to need your umbrella later on this afternoon. here's how the timing plays out with our day planner. although we'll see that sunshine, it will help us warm things up. our winds mainly out of the north and northeast. it's fairly light so we're not getting too much assistance. as we get in toward the 10:00, 12:00 hour towards your lunch break, lots of brilliant sunshine. we start to get closer to the 80-degree park. i think most of the region will top out in the lower 80s. that's early afternoon. by 4:00, 5:00, we'll definitely see more of the cloud cover and then an opportunity for some more rain moving on in. we have a few areas with some fairly dense fog, particularly up into the northern portions of maryland, out toward west virginia and northern virginia and anywhere along the rivers and creeks you could find some patchy fog as well. that do affect your morning

commute. here's what we're looking for for the remainder of today. although the morning fog will mix out within the next two to three hours, we are expecting to see some breaks in the cloud cover break us plenty of sunshine, warming us up by midday and then the clouds move back in giving us late day shower and storm opportunities. while temperatures are staying warm through the nice stretch through mid week and the weekend, we're not going to see those hot temperatures. in fact, we'll stay in the 80s for the long term. we're sitting at 65 degrees for springfield. looking at 62 for vienna and for bethesda. even 64 out toward andrews air force base. the future cast forecast model is clearing out the clouds fairly quickly although during the 7:00 morning commute, we still have some overcast skies. we do get the sunshine through midday and then with the daytime heating a little bit of pop of showers and thunderstorms from 6:00 to 8:00. not going to rain you out by any means. we clear out nicely overnight tonight allowing the

temperatures to back on down. it does mean tomorrow we'll have an opportunity for late day showers and storms. here's how we look for highs today. right about 84 degrees at reagan national airport. i'm expecting mid-80s for much of the region. lower 80s towards the south and the east. it will be mild tonight as well. we were talking about 678 degrees for the city -- 68 degrees for the city's center. code green is good. we're not going to see the opportunity for too many showers or thunderstorms. just an isolated possibility today as the temperatures for the next seven days start to inch out of the middle 80s and we'll push those upper #s on by the time -- upper 80s by the time we get to saturday and sunday. we're looking at a very good weekend ahead but at least we're steering clear of the 90s. close in on the beltway, host of the overnice construction is clearing up and -- overnight construction is clearing up and we're looking good. the big issue is up north in old town ellicott city. i'm going to step out and show you what it's like live now. we've been dealing with the

situation since overnight. it's an overnight cargo train derailment deadly accident blocking frederick road if westchester and columbia pike and crews say it's going to be that way throughout the day with the cleanup and investigation. you're looking at a live shot from our kevin king right now up in old town ellicott city again blocked between frederick -- on frederick road it westchester and columbia pike. you want to keep that in mind for your travel plans. maybe use old columbia pike instead. route 29 is not affected by this. we'll take a look at route 29 right now at brings cheney -- briggs cheney road. let's go back over to our maps. this time we'll head over to virginia. no issues to report right now on 95 northbound as you head up from woodbridge towards springfield and on to 395. we'll take a live look in spring field first. no issues as you travel here leaving route 644 up to the beltway. route 1 is in good shape as well. the beltway no issues it tysons

acupuncture could be abalternative -- be an alternative for osteoarthritis. patients showed improvements in pain levels, and function cal capacity -- functional capacity after just one month of treatment. only one in two physicians suffers from burnout. a poll of more than 7,000 physicians found 45% reported at least one stop of burnout. doctors that practice emergency medicine, neurology and family medicine showed the highest rates. dermatology and general pediatrics were at lower risk. researchers say more work needs to be done to understand physician burnout. first lady michele obama is on a mission. she's fighting child obesity with her let's move campaign. it talks about the importance of physical fitness and heart pumping exercise. >> let's move also encourages healthy eating. she celebrated that from a child's perspective with some young and very excited chefs. anita brikman has more.
