mixture of sun and clouds as you step out. we have that moisture in the ground from the rain last night so there are areas of patchy fog. your morning commute might be slowed down in a few locations. other than that we're pretty good. the bus stop forecast is comfortable. most of us are in the middle and lower 60s this morning. we're going to continue with partial clearing through midday. i think by about the 9:00 hour all of us should be above 70 degrees or better. it looks like visibility areas will be an issue for us at least for the next couple of hours as we'll see those patchy clouds and fog throughout the area. then midday sunshine helps us get into the lower 80s. we should top out around 84 degrees for reagan national airport later on this afternoon. again a fairly cool and mild start but we'll definitely see an improvement as the day wears on. monika? well, if you're planning to use the beltway, things are looking great early this morning. no issues to report on our major thoroughfares headed to the beltway. but there was an overnight deadly cargo train derailment up in old town ellicott city.

right now that is blocking frederick road. i'm going to show what you it looks like first from our live shot. our kevin king is up at the scene here. frederick road is closed between westchester and columbia pike. and because of the seriousness of the situation and what happened there, 23 of the 80 cars derailed. they were carrying coal. the cleanup will take all day and therefore authorities there are telling us that frederick road is closed between westchester and columbia pike. i'll be back with more traffic coming up in my next report in a few minutes. back to you guys. the prince george's county police department is mourning the loss of a young officer and as they grieve, investigators are looking for two suspects. >> the same to people officer adrian morris was chasing when his patrol car crashed. jessica doyle is live at police headquarters in palmer park with the latest on the story. good morning, jess. >> reporter: good morning to both of you. this is a huge loss for the prince george's county police department. they are mourning the loss of one of their own. he is officer adrian morris,

just 23 years old, on the police force for just two years. the officer lost his life after a police chase yesterday. two prince george's county police officers were alerted to a car that may have been involved in an attempted car break-in at a gas station earlier in the day. they were investigating. they pursued the suspect in their cruiser. but then the police car went off the road on 95 south landing in a ditch. witnesses say the alleged suspect may have tried to run the police officers off the road. officer morris was ejected from the vehicle. he was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. >> this job is not an easy job by any means. and it's dangerous in everything that we do just about. but these officers were dedicated to doing their duty and that's what they were doing is following up on this theft report. >> reporter: it's very important that you stop what you are doing this morning. take a look at your screen because we're showing you

in maryland. a csx train with 80 cars derailed just before midnight in ellicott city. 23 of those cars which were carrying coal jumped the tracks. to people who were walking on a bridge which is underneath those tracks were killed. some cars parked nearby were crushed. now a massive effort is under way to clean up the spilled coal and heavy cranes are being brought to the scene. fairfax county police hope someone at an apartment complex in the ran cone ya neighborhood will help them solve a child rape case. the 5-year-old victim was playing in the common area of the complex sunday night. that's when investigators say her attacker led her away while holding her hand. then she was attacked in the basement of one of the apartment buildings. police canvassed the complex with descriptions of the suspect hoping to jog someone's memory. >> the sight of a man holding the hand of a 5-year-old child might not immediately raise alarm bells. and so that's why we want to draw people's attention to this incident. >> police say many apartments

have windows facing the playground so they hope someone may have unknowingly witnessed the beginning of this awful crime. five people were recovering after a ride on bus drove into a home. it happened in silver spring yesterday. the bus plowed into a home on avenel road. about a dozen people were on the bus and some of them suffered minor injuries. there were people inside the home but none of them was injured. no damage estimate yet for the gaping hole left in that house. >> es it is 5:05. it's time for the latest your money report as you saw jessica is out on assignment this morning but we have the stories for you. another may -- britain and other major markets claiming games. the dow lost less than 14 points. the nasdaq and s&p 500 lost a fraction. district of columbia government employees who were forced to take furlough days last year will be getting some extra money in their paychecks

now. mayor vincent gray says nearly 22,000 workers will be repaid for their furlough days that starts today. the furlough days were imposed to help close what they thought was going to be a stay yore budget -- major budget gap. but they had a surplus so they're getting their money back. a sleepy suburb in indianapolis is topping the lits of cnn's best places to live. they use carmel, indiana based on job opportunities, low crime, quality of health care and good schools. mckinney, texas, even prairie, minnesota, newton, massachusetts and redman, washington round out the top five. the top place in our area was reston. centreville, virginia as well as waldorf are in the top 25. part of the mississippi river is closed this morning. that story is coming up. >> plus, progress slow for firefighters who are battling

we're off to a calm start here across the region this morning. mostly cloudy skies but we'll get a break this afternoon. looks like we'll warm up to the middle range 80s. lower 80s for highs later on this afternoon. we should peek with -- peak

with more sunshine before the clouds start to move n. this morning's concern poor visibility with areas of patchy fog. a couple of things i need to tell you about. let's take a look at the beltway north of town. this is fine but if you're planning to head southbound on the bw parkway after route 202, a car into the woods there. let's go to virginia on the northbound side of 95. lanes are open here in springfield. southbound fairfax county parkway is blocked at burke center parkway with an accident as well. i'll also details coming up in my next report about the big accident in old ellicott city at 5:16. back to you guys. making news now at 5:09. the ponderosa wildfire has now scorched more than 16,000 acres in northern california while firefighters have contained 30% of the blaze, it's still threatening about 3,000 homes. flames have already destroyed seven homes. aerial spraying for mosquitoes is now under way around dallas, texas. last week's storms interrupted their attempts to keep spraying from the air. health officials are trying to

fight the west nile virus there. at least 13 people have died and more than 500 others have gotten sick. nearly 100 barges and ships are stuck along the mississippi river. the coast guard has closed the stretch of the river because of low water levels. now the army corps of engineers is surveying so crews is dredge the lowest areas and get ships moving again. >> we're not nearly as dry as the states around the mississippi river. that's a good thing. there are warmer details coming up. at 5:15, the seven-day forecast. olga has that. >> a deadline looms for the congressman who made controversial comments about rape last week. >> the nationals prospect, one of them is facing surgery even before he has a chance to make the big lead club. those stories and more right after this.

welcome back. it's 5:12 and 67 degrees. monika here with timesaver traffic. the beltway looks great. the big story of the morning is definitely up in old ellicott city where frederick road is closed between westchester road and columbia pike because of an overnight deadly cargo train derailment. you'll want to use old columbia pike or route 40 instead as your alternate route. let's go over to another map. this time we're going to head over to the other side of town of the here's would it looks like on the beltway north of town. no issues to report. this is really what it looks like all around town at university boulevard. you can see no delays right now on the top side of town between 270 and i-95.

let's go back over to our maps. this time we'll head over to bw parkway where there's an accident right after route 202. a car went into the woods here n. virginia on i-95, everything is fine from lorton into newington and springfield and 395. there is an accident on the southbound side of the fairfax county parkway. it's blocked at burke center parkway here in springfield. 95 still looking good up to 395. i'll be back with more traffic at 5:24. that area of 95 looking good. what about the forecast? >> forecast looks good. we do have areas of fog this morning so i think some folks are going to have a little bit of a slower commute but that's only in several pacific areas. we will get some sunshine later on this afternoon. and then the cloud cover rolls back n. here's how we look with our day planner. although we're starting out in the 60s, fairly comfortable, a little cool to the north and west, we will warm up fairly quickly. by midday most of us will hit

the lower 80s between 12:00 and 1:00. watch how the clouds start to move back in. winds today mainly out of the northeast. that's keeping things fairly overcast as we head into the afternoon with late day showers and storms. i have the satellite and radar 12-hour loop here. you can see the amount 6 moisture that -- of moisture that came through overnight. much is on the ground this morning and that's what's giving us the opportunity for patchy areas of fog. very low visibility out to portions of virginia. we're actually seeing some fairly large areas of fog in the northern and western portions of maryland. in all today, though, we are going to be looking at a good deal of sunshine so once you get past the fog this morning, the sunshine will break through midday, late afternoon looks pretty good. but by the time we get very late in the day say 4:00, 5:00, showers and thunderstorms could develop. we're not expecting any severe weather. however, temperatures are staying in check mainly the 80s for this week and no 9 on the in -- 90s in sight, at least the short term.

sitting at 64 degrees for manassas. 67 for reagan national. very cool cumberland, 57. and middle 50s out toward the panhandle in oakland. we will start to see an improvement in our weather forecast for today. already getting some breaks in the cloud cover during the 7:00 and 8:00 hours this morning. spotty showers develop. most of that will stay off toward the mountain ranges. then clear and calm overnight tonight allowing temperatures to go back down into the 60s. we're going to start out on wednesday with a little bit of moisture around. by midday and late afternoon possibility for a few showers and maybe an isolated thunderstorm on wednesday as well. today's highs will take us right to about 84 degrees for reagan national. we should see middle to lower 80s region wide and then tonight another comfortable one. back down into the 60s, middle and lower 60s for most outside the city. code green for the next three days. we'll peak toward 86 degrees by thursday. but friday, saturday and sunday

we want to update our breaking news story. a deadly train derailment. >> 23 cars of a coal train fell down into historic ellicott city city. where are we in this cleanup, ken? >> reporter: hi, guys. thanks for covering this. i've been here since a little after midnight. certainly we're continuing to

search operations. right now csx is bringing if heavy cranes to move some of the train cars that have fallen on to automobiles in a county- owned parking lot adjacent to the rail bridge. there are a number of vehicles that folks drove to come to the bars and restaurants late last night. we want to go through each of those and we're hoping there are no additional victims. >> it's our understanding two people were killed when the train cars fell to the street below. do we know their identities yet? are we allowed to release those? >> no, we still -- the police investigation is ongoing. they were on the bridge so the police investigation is ongoing. we do know there are two victims. >> mr. county executive, you said-- >> our condolences go out to the families. >> you're hoping there are no other victims.

are you going through those cars trying to get into those cars just to make sure? have you had any calls from anyone saying that a relative hasn't come home and they're worried? >> well, we went through -- our men and women in the fire rescue department went through every vehicle right away that they could get to. there are a number that are buried under coal and these heavy train cars that we can't get to till csx lifts them off with these cranes. we have no reason to believe there are other victims but until we go through each of those vehicles, we just won't know. >> you told us earlier this morning that this is a pretty impressive scene. just how massive is the cleanup? how many people are involved in trying to upright these cars, clear the road and get things back to normal? >> there are at least a couple hundred folks here from howard county police, howard county fire and rescue. our highways causes, baltimore -- crews, baltimore county is

here. their fire and rescue police are here. we have folks from state highways, maryland department environment, from csx, from national safety folks. so there are hundreds of folks here trying to get this all cleaned up. we're working as hard as we can. we would ask that any commuters tomorrow morning please find another way -- this morning i should say. i forgot what time it was. use another route and please be patient with us to get all this cleaned up. >> oftentimes with accidents of this magnitude, there are environmental concerns. we have coal here, rail cars, what are your concerns as far as that is? >> sure. maryland department of the environment has been here to see how much coal if any got into the river. it's going to take until daybreak to really search that area. coal is certainly not what you would want on the ground or in a nearby river but it certainly could have been a lot worse if there was a hazardous chemical.

>> what kind of traffic do you normally expect on that stretch of road? is that going to be a big issue for the commute today? >> there are ways for folks to get around but certainly if you're in the ellicott city area and use this every day, it will be an inconvenience tomorrow morning or this morning. so we ask people's patience n. is a vibrant, bust lick historic main street -- bustling historic main street with shops and businesses. we'll try to get everything open as soon as we possibly can. >> we'll stay on the story and help any way we can. still ahead now, the nationals and their closest division rival played an extra half-hour of baseball last night. >> actually it was after midnight when this ended. in the bottom of the 13th inning washington had runners at the corners when chad tracy hit a ground ball but braves second baseman dan ugla froze and then he fumbled the ball.

danny us pen nose today crosses home -- espinoza crosses home plate and the nationals win 5- 4. good morning, everybody. preseason football is all about building team chemistry and working out the kinks. good thing the redskins have to more preseason games because they have a lot of work to do on both sides of the ball. they got back to it in ashburn yesterday trying to fix what's not working. robert griffin iii looked less like a franchise quarterback saturday night and more like a rookie. holding on to the ball too long against the bears, trying too hard to make things happen. but we have heard how quick of a learner he is and rg3 says he plans on learning from this. >> once you stop trying to make a play, that's when you start playing with fear. so i'm not going to play with fear and -- i learned from that mistake. to me it's very simple to learn from something like that it's just something that happened in the game. you have to learn from it and

move forward. >> brian owe says his shoulder will be ready. he heard a pop saturday and thought the injury would be much worse than it is. an m.r.i. showed no serious damage to orakpo's shoulder and he won't require surgery. some not so good injury news for the nationals and their top draft pick. lieu causes geolita injured his elbow. he'll have it examined it by the same surgeon who did surgery for zimmerman. the buffalo bills cut the veteran pass rusher yesterday sticking with two of their younger guys. this would have been the former maryland terrapins third year with buffalo. he finished the last two seasons on injured reserve but said he was now in the best shape of his career. that's a

good morning. welcome back to nine fine now. i'm -- 9news now. i'm andrea roane. happy tuesday. i'm mike hydeck. monika samtani has traffic and breaking news coming up. olga has weather. we're starting off with cloud cover. we'll see sunshine later this afternoon. the big concern will be those areas of patchy fog. we have poor visibility over the last hour. it started to drop off even a little bit more. outside right now, though, we're not doing too bad from our michael & son camera looking toward the white house. temperatures right now in the 60s region wide. 67 at reagan national airport. i'm expecting plenty of sunshine through the lunch

break. we should hit the lower 80s by 12:00 and we'll keep going. middle range 80s for highs around 3:00 and 4:00 and we'll see a little bit after dropoff from there. the seven-day forecast will feature fairly consistent temperatures around the middle 80s through thursday. we'll drop our rain chances on thursday and friday and slowly inch up into the upper 80s by the time we get into the saturday and weekend forecast. the big story this morning is up in old ellicott city. good morning, everybody. frederick road is closed down in both directions up in old ellicott city and you'll want to choose your all alternate routes. what happened overnight if you're planning to head over there is an overnight deadly cargo train derailment. 23 of the 80 cars derailed carrying coal. our anchor just spoke to county executive ken ullman. he tells us it is going to take a while to clear this us. detours have been posted. you want to use old column

down an embankment. >> 23-year-old officer adrian morris was thrown from the car and killed. 9news now reporter jessica doyle is at prince george's county police headquarters where they're both investigating and mourning their loss. >> reporter: good morning to both of you. good morning, everybody. there is still a lot to be learned in this case so they are desperately investigating. this is the first loss for the prince george's county police department since 2010. that loss officer adrian morris. he was killed after a police crash yesterday. he and his partner were in an apparent police chase. they were pursuing two suspects from an attempted car break-in at a gas station earlier in the day. while in sur suit the police -- pursuit, the police car went off the road on 95 south landg in a ditch. witnesses say the suspects may have tried to run that police car off the road. officer morris was ejected from the vehicle. here's the desperate 911 call that followed that crash.

gray acura with temporary plates. a $25,000 reward has been posted in this case. the officer who died adrian morris, he was just 23 years old. he had been on the police force for just two years. if you know anything about these suspects, you are urged to reach out to police through crime solvers, prince george's county police department or 911. i'm going to send it back to you in the studio, mike. >> thanks, jess. today the hirsshorn museum is scheduled to open on time at 10:00 a.m. the gallery was evacuated monday afternoon when gunshots were reported inside. d.c. police believe a museum security guard took his own life in the employees locker room. the museum remained clouds for the rest of the day yesterday. olga has rain in the forecast. lately any downpour is bad news for the people in d.c.'s bloomingdale neighborhood. they were flooded three

separate times last month. this morning mayor vincent gray is announcing the establishment of a flood prevention task force specifically for those neighborhoods. task force members will take a closer look at the utility pipes and other infrastructure to see what's going the flooding. today missouri congressman todd akin is facing a 5:00 p.m. deadline local time to withdraw from the u.s. senate race. after that it's going to be much tougher for republicans to put him on the ballot. >> akin is under fire after his weekend comments about not supporting abortions in the case of rape. now it's estimated akin has already lost at least $5 million in backing from g.o.p. organizations. susan mcginnis has more. >> reporter: the calls for missouri congressman todd akin to resign are mounting. akin says he's not going anywhere. >> i'm announcing today that we're going to stay in. >> reporter: the controversy started when akin, a republican, was asked by a local tv station if he would support abortions for women who are raped. >> from what i understand from

doctors, that's really rare. if it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down. >> reporter: the reaction was swift and overwhelming in condemning the comment. >> there's no such thing as an illegitimate rape. >> rape is rape. >> reporter: akin apologized for the comments pond and said he suffered from foot and mouth disease. >> let me be clear. rape is never legitimate. i also know that the people do become pregnant from rape. i didn't mean to imply that wasn't the case. >> reporter: republicans on capitol hill view the missouri senate seat as critical in their efforts to regain a majority in the senate. so many in the g.o.p. are pressuring the congressman to pull out of the race. massachusetts senator scott brown was the first to publicly call for akin to withdraw. >> i found those comments unacceptable, really outrageous and obviously i've asked him to step down. >> reporter: but his opponent says the g.o.p.

welcome back. we have overcast skies at reagan national airport and much of town as well. we'll get some breaks in the cloud cover through midday. by 12:00 most of us should hit the 80-degree mark and we'll keep on going. expecting reagan national to hit 84 by about 4:00. with the late day clouds we could see some showers and thunderstorms move on in. over the last 12 hours, we saw quite a different rain push on in through the region. beginning to see some breaks in the cloud cover during this

hour. but again clouds are coming back which means we'll have that rain opportunity as well. right now it 161 in leesburg -- is 61 in leesburg and winchester. 64 for manassas and la plata and even out toward annapolis 68 degrees. you'll notice a tick in that humidity. it is quite muggy with all of the moisture around. the forecast model does pull in a little bit more moisture but hit or miss into the afternoon and evening hours. in fact, we should see most of this die down as we head overnight tonight starting out tomorrow morning not so bad. mainly clear skies for your wednesday morning which means temperatures dropping back into the 60s and then late day shower or storm is a possibility tomorrow as well. here's what we have to look forward to for today. highs right around 84 to 85 degrees for the region but we'll see cooler temperatures up to the north only into those lower 80s. tonight again it will be fairly mild. back down into the 60s. we'll see some upper 50s north and west. in all, though, we're keeping with code green for tuesday,

wednesday, and thursday. although the temperatures fairly comfortable in the 80s, we'll slowly see an increase in this heat as we head through the remainder of the week. it's going to be subtle but by thursday and friday, we bring in south and southeasterly winds. that's going to push up our moisture level and even get temperatures closer to the upper 80s and 89 degrees by monday. monika? good morning, everybody. things are looking fine on the beltway close into town with the exception of an accident on the outer loop at route 1. that was blocking the right lane just causing minor delays. here is the big story of the morning. up in old ellicott city, we'll go to a live picture where frederick road is closed between westchester and columbia pike. a csx train hauling coal derailed overnight. 23 of the 80 cars derailed carrying coal and two people are dead with this incident. the investigation and cleanup will take all day long.

from the american society of plastic surgeons say most women want to see what reconstructive surgery would look like before undergoing the procedure. many patients are volunteering to show and tell at the first ever breast reconstruction aware fz day or -- awareness day or national bra day. >> reporter: kim isn't shy about showing breast cancer patients her body. she had a mastectomy and reconstructive surgery at the same time and couldn't be happier with the results. >> it was very important to share that experience with other women because i didn't want them just to have to look at a photo. >> reporter: a new survey from the american society of plastic surgeons shows most women agree. the survey found 89% of women say they would rather see what reconstruction results might look like before making any treatment decisions. the problem is not only are some women never shown surgery results but seven out of ten are not fully informed about

morning. >> thank r thank you for having -- thank you for having me. >> is there a big concern? >> it's interesting because over 16 million children still suffer from dozen tall disease. -- from dental disease n. a country like ours, that's an appalling number. most of the disease occurs in a small percentage ever the population. lower income level, african- americans, mexican americans. children who may not have access to the education and their parents may not have access to the education about how to properly care for their mouths. >> as far as prevention, what are some of the first steps they can take. how do you get started on the right path? >> certainly try to get your child to a dentist. there are many resources for that. but also parents need to learn to start teaching children early on about brushing their teeth. large majority of parents, more than 60% when surveyed said their children miss brushing their teeth. quite often, at least once or twice a week they don't brush

their teeth daily. there's a wonderful thing that's come about with the coalition of 35 dental organizations. it's a partnership called healthy mouths, healthy lives. what they're trying to stress is let's teach parents, let's teach caregivers and children the importance of brushing your teeth twice a day for two minutes. >> to get people to smile and get their attention on this topic, you have an interesting psa. >> we do the ad council has paired with the coalition of organizations and basically "sesame street," dream works, a lot of companies have made these psas. these psas areth things that poke fun at all the things that kids do that actually take more than two minutes that waste time when they could be brushing their teeth. >> it's funny that elmo is the spokesperson for this considering he has no teeth. that's kind of funny. he's very cute. he's big in our house. when parents start to make changes on a daily routine, what are some of the things they need to know as they start to do day in and day out with
