we are getting some areas of patchy fog because of that moisture that fell last night. it is beginning to complicate the ride in a few locations this morning. our day planner, though, will feature a break in the cloud comp. we are mostly cloudy right now in the 60s. close to 80 degrees by noon with brilliant sunshine. you want your sunglasses with you. watch for the clouds to move back in as temperatures peak right around 84 degrees. visibility very low in several areas including gaithersburg down towards stafford and portions of lower virginia areas. the beltway temperatures are going to be fairly good for today as our lies are moving into the 8 -- our highs are moving into the 80s. a lot going on this morning. i'm going to start off with the beltway where there had been an accident on the outer loop near route 1 in college park. the right lane had been blocked. i believe that that should be cleared up by now but watch out for some residual delays on the outer loop right here at route

1 in college park. we're going to take a look at 270, just the normal slow stuff forming as you leave approximately route 109 toward 121. you're going below the speed limit but all lanes are open i'm happy to say. let's take a live look outside and show you what it looks like if you're planning to head on the beltway at university boulevard. no real delays on the outer loop after the route 1 incident as you head toward silver spring. you should be okay here. let's go back over to our maps and this time to virginia northbound 95 also beginning to slow down in woodbridge as you head towards springfield. it's going to be off and on right now. there is an accident southbound fairfax county parkway at the burke center parkway. you want to watch out for police direction thrcht we'll take a live look on the northbound side of 395. here's what it looks like at duke street. want to be aware there's an accidentnbound on the suitland parkway at stanton road and another one westbound on i-66 right before the dulles connector road as well. i'll be back with more traffic at 6:11. back to you guys.

flags are at half staff in prince george's county today. a 23-year-old police officer was killed monday while sur suing to suspects a -- pursuing twsuspects a interstate 95. investigators are still looking for those suspects. the officer who died, his name was adrian morris. he was raised in laurel and spent a litt more than two years on the force. jessica doyle is outside the prince george's county police headquarters with more on what happened. jess? >> reporter: such an incredibly sad story. good morning to you, mike and andrea. this is a huge loss for the prince george's county police department. they are mourning the loss of one of your own. as you were saying he is officer adrian morris, just 23 years old, only on the police force for two years. the officer lost his life after a police chase yesterday. two prince george's county police officers were alerted to a car that may have been involved in annual attempt the car break-in at a gas station earlier in the day. they sur sued the suspect in -- pursued the suspect in their cruiser but then the police

officer went off the road on i- 95 south landing in a ditch. witnesses say the alleged suspect may have tried to run that police car off the road. officer morris was ejected from the vehicle and later pronounced dead at a local hospital. >> this job is not an easy job by any means and there's danger in everything we do just about. but these officers were dedicated to doing their duty and that's what they were doing was following up on this theft rert. >> reporter: we urge you to stop what you're doing this morning and take a look at your television screen. the reason why, we're showing you images of one of the alleged suspects. these images were delivered to us by the prince george's county police department. the suspects allegedly tried to break into a car at a smell station on sandy spring road in laurel yesterday. the vehicle they were driving believed to be a gray acura with temporary tags. there is a $25,000 reward being offered in this case. if you know anything about this

suspect or the suspects in this case believed to be involved, you are urged to reach out to police. you can do that through crime solvers. call 911 or contact the pj police department. -- the prince george's county police department. back to you. >> thanks, jessica doyle is live at police headquarters in palmer park this morning. what caused a ride on bus to slam into a home in silver spring? investigators are still trying to find out. medics rushed five people to the hospital. check this out. there's a bus in this man's living room. the roam is on avenel road near new hampshire avenue. two people were inside during that crash. they are expected to be fine. a witness told us how it all happened. >> he lost his brakes. we were right there. i looked behind and i see this bus coming and shooting by me side ways. he went into the next-door neighbor's house. we watched him plow that house. >> unbelievable. none of the victims seriously hurt. the house is now being

evaluated for structural damage. it is coming up on 6:05 as you saw jessica is in the field today but we're still watching your money. if you have stock in apple, your port knoll crow is very hill -- portfolio is very healthy. apple is now the most valuable company in american history. stocks for the tech company hit a new high yesterday, the $633 a share. apple's market value is estimated at $622 billion. facebook not doing as well. one of the company's earliest investors and board members sold off his shares last week. 20 million of them worth about $396 million. the stock has lost nearly half of its value since its initial public offering. the nation's airlines are trying to raise fares again. southwest is leading the charge this time. it just hiked fares $5 each way for flights fewer than 500 miles. usually when southwest raises fares, the other carriers follow and so far delta, u.s.

morning. we could see a little bit of rain today and a warm-up pretty soon, too. your weather first is straight ahead. >> first, when it comes to giving, head west or south. people living in utah give the largest percentage of their income to charity over 10.5%. the rankings from the chronicle of philanthropy put mississippi second, followed by alabama, tennessee and south carolina. >> maryland came in tenth. they give 5.7 of their income to charity. total is 14th with 4.8% of people's salary going to charity. that adds up to 4.2 billion. d.c. was not part of the study.

we do have some cloud cover around. we'll see med day sunshine. -- midday sunshine. that will warm things up. i expect temperatures to reach the lower to middle #s on. then a shower or -- middle 80s. then a shower or thunderstorm is possible. old ellicott city there's been an overnight cargo train derailment. because of that frederick road is closed between westchester road and columbia pike. your alternate routes are old column would pike and route 40. i'll have more details on this and other incidents around town

coming up in my next report. back to you guys. >> thank you, monika. the time is ticking for missouri congressman and senate candidate todd akin. >> he has just under 12 hours to decide whether or not he's going to stay in the race for u.s. senate. after that it becomes harder for republicans to replace him. >> he's come under fire for comments he made about rape and abortion. susan mcginnis reports his own party is turning against him. >> reporter: the calls for missouri congressman todd akin to resign are mounting. akin says he's not going anywhere. >> i'm announcing today that we're going to stay in. >> reporter: the controversy started when akin, a republican, was asked by a local tv station if he would support abortions for women who are raped. >> from what i understand from doctors, that's really rare. if it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down. >> reporter: the republican was swift and overwhelming in condemning the comment. >> there is no such thing as an illegitimate rape. >> the views expressed were offensive. rape is rape. >> reporter: akin apologized

for the comments monday and said he suffered from foot in mouth disease. >> let me be clear, rape is never legitimate. i also know that people do become pregnant from rape. i didn't mean to imply that that wasn't the case. >> reporter: republicans on capitol hill view the missouri senate seat as critical in their efforts to regain a majority in the senate. so many in the g.o.p. are pressuring the congressman to pull out of the race. massachusetts senator scott brown was the first to publicly call for akin to withdraw. >> i found those comments unacceptable, really outrageous and obviously i've asked him to step down. >> reporter: but his opponent says the g.o.p. should respect missouri's voters. >> i would just be surprised if todd akin would be susceptible to outside pressure when the voters of missouri have selected him. >> reporter: mitt romney called the comments indefensible. in washington, susan mcginnis, 9news now. >> if congressman akin does stay in the race, he may find

it hard to fund his campaign. at least one super pack has already pulled its ads supporting him and others may soon follow. the republican convention begins next week in tampa. the democrats host theirs next month in charlotte. some local politicians will be speaking to the crowd. maryland governor martin o'malley will be one of the featured speakers. we haven't been told when he will speak. the same goes for former virginia governor and current senate candidate tim kaine. julian castro will be the keynote speaker at the convention. it is 6:13 this tuesday morning. this is a beautiful shot of one of the nation's capital's most beautiful monuments, the jefferson memorial. it's a pretty cloudy day. olga says we had rain earlier. we might get through the majority of the day but this afternoon you'll definitely want to keep the rain gear handy because showers are moving into our area. but as mike has been telling us, it's a cooler start to the

morning. >> for 66 degrees we've had already this year -- olga will be with us in just a mommy. we've had overnight temperatures near 80 degrees. so when we are at 66, it's really chilly out. here's a look at the white house. good morning, mr. president. you see the lights from inside the white house. >> they had a really cool schools kind of event there yesterday with the young people at a state dinner which was really a state lunch. >> the first lady's let's move campaign. the kids submitted some recipes and they got actually cooked by the white house staff. >> we can see the nice sunrise coming up over the white house. olga is now here with us to tell us more about the day ahead. >> one of the best times of the day is daybreak. we're starting to see some of the fog out there as well through our camera view. the forecast for today is going to be a little bit mixed. we're starting out with overcast skies in the morning. we'll see some breaks in the cloud cover so don't forget to take the sunglasses with you as you're stepping out and about

but you'll also want the umbrella later on today. our weather planner is going to feature 70-degree temperatures till about noontime. we should hit 80 in and around the city. but early afternoon reagan national should make it close to 84 degrees before those clouds come through and the rain begins to fall. expecting it to stay fairly comfortable for the kids if they're heading out and about for the bus stop. although the clouds will be here from time to time, i think the fog will be the most dangerous or biggest concern. visibility areas will be down but only for a couple of hours. again the day planner will get us into the 80s in no time so a warm day today but by no means will it be hot. so that's quite a treat for this time of summer. the patchy fog will mix out fairly quickly. i think by 9:00 and 10:00 everyone will be in the clear. then we'll get that midday sunshine cranking on through. when we get the heating during the day, it destabilizes everything for us so we could see the late day showers and storms develop and not very

warm today. only sticking to the 80-degree temperatures. current temperatures are continuing to drop down. we're already down to 59 for gaithersburg. sitting at 62 for alexander yacht the forecast model is going to clear out some of that cloud cover but not before we get some rain later on today. i think our better chance for rain comes tomorrow afternoon say 6:00, 7:00 we could see some moisture moving on in. seven-day newscast only a slight warm-up into the weekend but we could get close to 90 degrees by saturday. book to you. good morning, everybody. if you are planning to head over on the beltway in college park, there was an accident activity at route 1 along the right side of the road. that's been cleared up. the big story of the morning is definitely up in howard county and old ellicott city where main street is closed between westchester and columbia pike. csx trains hauling coal derailed overnight. it is a deadly situation in that area and the cleanup will take all day. so what i suggest take you do is use old columbia pike or

route 40 as your alternate routes. our anchors did speak to county executive ken ulman earlier this morning. he tells us that detours are posted throughout the area and please stay away from that area if you can today with that cleanup and investigation. we'll take you over to a live picture. this time show what you it looks like here on the beltway. it looks like that accident was cleared up at route 1 a while ago. no delays left over because of it. we're looking good really on the outer loop right through silver spring and over to 270. no issues to report as you head in from frederick. let's go over to virginia. this time we'll take a look on the northbound side of 95 and 395 where if you're planning to head nobody, you have the normal slow stuff through woodbridge and springfield as well. we'll take a live look on 66 on the inbound side. no issues whatsoever from manassas to centreville all the way into fairfax. on the westbound side before the dulles connector, there is an accident. you want to watch out for it westbound 66 before the dulles

6:21. we're going back to our breaking news this morning. a deadly trail derailment in maryland. >> it happened just after midnight in ellicott city. a train carrying coal derailed

killing to people below. >> what can you tell us now, ken? >> reporter: our fire and rescue crews working alongside the police department, the highway crews and csx who owns the train line. we're just working really hard to get everything moving. unfortunately because we did have two fatalities, it's a slow process because the police folks want to be very careful in processing the scene. so it's a slow process. the cranes are now here to begin to move the heavy train cars off of the crushed automobiles underneath in the county parking garage. but it's going to be sometime before this all gets opened up. so we ask everyone to please be patient with us. >> ken, you've been there almost since this happened,

right after it. describe that scene when you came upon it. what did you see and your republicans and have you ever seen anything like this in howard county? >> no, i've never seen anything like this. our highway superintendent for this area has been here 43 years. he's never seen anything like it. when i got here around 12:30, it was just a pile of train cars that had fallen off a 20- foot high bridge. if you can picture each train car filled with coal, big piles of coal spilled over and on top of automobiles. so quite a scene. really had some brave men and women who worked hard in the search and rescue process. now we have a slow process. we still feed to see -- we're still praying there are no additional victims in any of these vehicles, but we've got to search each one. that's going to take some time. then we've got some work to clean this up and ascertain the

strurkt tucial integ -- structural integrity and get this corridor open and get main street ellicott city open. >> this bridge has presumably been in place for decades. safe travel across it for years and years. any kind of idea what anomaly caused this? was it operator error or too early to find out? >>it's too early to know. csx and our folks are doing an investigation. you're right, this was actually the first passenger railway in the country from ellicott city to baltimore. the old tom thumb took place here. no derailment like this has ever happened but ellicott city is a tough city. had floods and hurricanes and we'll get through this but again our deepest sympathies go to the victims in this case. >> one last question. looking at the massive recovery and as you say structural investigation that has to go

on, is there a chance that this roadway and traffic through this roadway could still be impacted as late as tomorrow? >> absolutely. we will do our best to open it up. we want to support the merchants and businesses here on main street, but we've got to make sure this is safe before it opens up. we have something called notify me howard where you can sign up for text messages and e-mail messages in real time. we'll keep folks as updated as we possibly can going forward. >> howard county executive ken ulman. thanks for joins us. our prayers are with you. >> condolences to the families to the people who were killed. 6:25. switching to sports the nationals are now 30 games over 500 for the first time since they moved to washington. >> they began a three-game series with the second place braves last night. fans waited through a one-hour rain delay only to see the game go to extra innings. >> it didn't end till 12:30

the redskins will be getting ready this week their first home game of the season. the indianapolis colts will visit fed ex field saturday afternoon. we have good news on the injury front. brian orakpo says he will be ready to go for the season opener. he thought he hurt his shoulder really badly but an m.r.i. shows no serious damage so he won't need surgery. 6:27. 9news now returns right after this.

this is the place you can always get your weather first. a live look at the 14th street bridge. 66 degrees. washington monument on your left. jefferson memorial on your right. thanks for starting your day here. i'm mike hydeck. i'm andrea roane. howard bernste is off today but olga breese is in. she has an update on the forecast. good morning. we have some humidity out here making it feel a little bit muggy. temperatures are continuing to slide. it's a little on the chilly side as cooler air is filtering on through. the temperatures are sitting in the 60s in and around the beltway. we'll see midday sunshine getting us into the middle 80s for highs. we stir up a late day shower or thunderstorm opportunity. thank you so much. if you're traveling around town right now, you're going to find that volumes are increasing and there are a couple of accidents that you'll want to know about. one is westbound on the -- westbound side of i-66 before the dulles connector. an accident there.

at one point only the shoulder was getting by. up in old ellicott city, main street remains closed between westchester and columbia pike with a serious overnight accident. deadly freight train derailment. it's going to be that way for a while there. you'll want to use old columbia pike or route 40 as an alternate route. here's what it looks like on the beltway at university boulevard. you'll find some brake lights now forming into silver spring but it's normal through that area as you leave the 95 interchange heading westbound through silver spring. once you're here at university boulevard, the pace improves to bethesda. let's take another look at our maps. this time we'll head over to the other side of town. an accident multivehicle accident, at least four to five vehicles involved on the inbound side of the suitland parkway right here at stanton road. at this point the left side of the road is blocked. it is causing delays at least at silver hill road on the westbound side of the suitland parkway. we'll take a live look at the 14th street bridge on the northbound side of 395. that's been incident free

>> good stuff. thanks, jeff. this morning prince george's county police are now mourning the loss of one of their own of the officer adrian morris died after crashing his patrol car at a high speed pursuit yesterday. the people he was pursuing are still out there this morning. >> jessica doyle is live at police headquarters in palmer park, maryland. jess, what do we know about the suspects? >> reporter: andrea, there's still a lot to be learned. we do have a description and some images we'll show you coming up. but we want to tell you first about the officer who died. this is the first loss for the prince george's county police department since 2010. he was officer adrian morris, and he died while in a car crash yesterday. he and his partner were in an apparent police chase. they were sur suing two suspects from an attempted -- pursuing two suspects from an attempted car break-in at a gas station earlier in the day. while in pursuit, the car went off the road. they were traveling on 95 south. they landed in a ditch.

witnesses say the suspect may have actually tried to run that police car off the road. officer morris ejected from the car. here's the desperate 911 call that followed this crash.

officer morris pronounced dead at the hospital later. his partner was released after being treated for nonlife threatening injuries. you're looking at images of one of the suspects in this case. they allegedly tried to break into a car at a shell gas station on sandy road in laurel. $25,000 being offered as a reward in this case. of course officer morris just 23 years old, only on the fours for two years. if you have any information at all that could lead to an arrest, any information that you could give to prince george's county police officers, you are urged to call 911, reach out to crime solvers or to the prince george's county police department. andrea, back to you. >> jessica doyle reporting live from palmer park, maryland. as jessica said, officer morris is the first prince george's county police officer to die in the line of duty in more than two years. corporal thomas jensen died in march 2010, ten days after crashing his car.

he was responding to a call when his patrol car hit a patch of ice in college park. jensen had served on the prince george's county force for more than five years. we are continuing to follow breaking news this morning of that fatal train derailment in howard county, maryland this morning. the csx train was running by mulligan hill lane which is just south of main street in ellicott city when it derailed. this is what it looked like just a short time ago. these are pictures from the scene. two bystanders were killed. howard county executive ken ulman says 23 cars out of the 8 80-car train derailed spilling coal everywhere. cranes are there now starting to resome of those rail cars albeit slowly. we're going to stay on the story throughout the day and you can watch it on wusa9.com. fairfax county police are hoping the flyers they put up

around a lanconia apartment complex will lead them to the man they say sexually assaulted a 5-year-old girl. police say the man assaulted the child at a complex on manitoba drive sunday evening. investigators say the little girl was playing in the common area when the attacker led her away and assaulted her in one of the apartments. parents say they're now going to keep an even closer watch on their children while they play. >> my child play outside so i watching him around so i'm in the parking lot walking and watching them because there are people coming. >> police say the man was holding the little girl's hand and while that's not unusual, they are hoping someone remembers seeing something at the scene that could help. and it might help them catch the suspect. 6:35 now. campaign 2012 news. in virginia new voters i.d. laws will be in place for the november elections. citizens can no longer vote without showing identification.

but the state also did expand the list of irchts d.s that it -- i.d.s that it accepts. students can use a valid student i.d. you can also use a valid utility bill that shows and name and address of the voter. to maryland where the exact wording and numbering is set for the big ballot question coming up in number. question four will ask voters if they approve of giving illegal immigrants in state tuition. it will be for students who attended maryland high school and whose parents pay taxes. question five will ask voters to sign off a new congressional district in the state. that map was created last fall. question six is asking voters whether or not they want to legalize same-sex marriage. it affirms each rlg's control -- rlg's control over its own rules on over who may get married. question seven is about gambling expansion. can maryland install table games and a new casino to be built in prince george's

good morning. welcome back. monika here with timesaver traffic. we continue to keep you informed about the big news overfight where there was a deadly freight train derailment in old ellicott city. main street is closed between westchester and columbia pike. you'll won't to choose your alter nat route because of this closure. consist executive ken ulman says will be closed throughout the day and possibly into tomorrow. wasn't to plan ahead. columbia pike or route 40 will be your alternate routes through the area.

looking great. daybreak is moving along. temperatures are continuing to drop off. reagan airport down to 66 degrees. a bit of a chilly start. we are expecting our air quality today to stay in the moderate range. things will be changing. mostly cloudy this morning. some breaks in the cloud cover through midday. we'll get into the lower range to middle 80s later on this afternoon but we also have the opportunity for late day showers and thunderstorms to develop. again i mentioned these cool temperatures. 61 out toward vienna. 61 toward alexandria. we're definitely going to see a cool easing into the forecast to make sure the kids are prepared as they step out to the bus stop. a little bit of patchy fog slowing down that ride as we sit in the 6 on and near 70 -- 60 and near 70 degrees. looks like the forecast will feature some sunshine after the fog m.c.i.s out. through -- mixes out. through midday, late day, not too bad. showers and thunderstorms could

develop late day and it will be hit or miss. we will see the opportunity for warming temperatures as we go through tuesday, wednesday and thursday. we'll be slightly below average but at least fairly comfortable with some of that cloud cover moving on through. as far as your extended forecast goes, it looks like we are in for a pretty good stretch. we'll have a rain opportunity for today and for tomorrow as temperatures hover right around 85 degrees for the rest of the week but so far it looks like thursday, friday will be dry. saturday not a bad start to our weekend but slowly we're going to get back to those typical summertime temperatures back to the upper 80s to near 90 by monday. it 16:48. parents of children with autism watch from the shore this past weekend as their children did something they never thought they'd do. >> a great program. they hopped on surf boards and they enjoyed the waves. katie collete reports from virginia beach. >> reporter: the virginia beach surf welcomes more than 225

children. all of them autistic. lilly olson didn't let the rain stop her from catching a wave, something her mother love lows to see. >> she doesn't really talk. i don't know what she's thinking but it looks like she's having fun. >> reporter: bittersweet for lilly and her mom. >> first year she was part of surfer healing. her dead went into a coma from melanoma two days prior to when she sured and he passed away two days after. it's special for us to come out here and remember him. she's out here surfing for her daddy. >> reporter: it's the healing powers of the water. volunteers hope the children feel. >> it does something for the kids that i think is just wonderful. >> reporter: twin webster was a pro surfer for 20 years before he became a volunteer. >> that's the biggest reward seeing the kids having the time of their life. >> reporter: wave after wave these children of all levels of autism show their excitement and joy of just being, well, a

kid. >> it's so empowering to be able to see her out there and actually doing something that she enjoys that i never in a million years thought she would be able to do. >> reporter: maybe these surfers do more than heal the children. judging by the happiness on all of these faces, maybe, just maybe they heal families as well. >> i'm just so grateful there are things like this and there are people out there that have creative minds and come up with programs like this. it's just awesome. >> that was kitty collete -- katie collete reporting. it was founded by a former competitive surfer and his wife who had a son diagnosed with autism at age 3. they said he often suffered from sensory overload but the ocean was the one place he seemed to find some calm. it is 6:50. time to find out the answer to our question of the morning n. a recent survey more than 85% of men say they're scared of which of these things? is it a, spiders, b, getting old, or c, going bald?

today is tuesday, august 24. here's a check of the news before you go. a prince george's county police officer has died in the line of duty. 23-year-old adrian morris died after crashing his patrol car along interstate 95 yesterday while pursuing to suspects. those two suspects remain at large. police believe one of them may be connected to a theft in montgomery county. these are live pictures from ellicott city, maryland this morning. a train derailment overnight killed to people along main street and it dumped tons of coal right into downtown
