edge, titled levation. the train accident happened a short time later. 21 cars of the 80 car coal train derailed. the two girls were found dead at the scene after one tweeted earlier in the evening about drinking in ellicott city. >> we have video information that we're down loading and looking at. >> investigator is now leading a team to determine exactly what happened and why and refusing to speculate if the train derailed during an emergency stop, perhaps to avoid the girls on the track. >> a whole lot more than just a hard stop. the weight of the train, all these kinds of things. >> up there on that train track, there's no plates for them to go. when a train comes. >> residents say the tracks are a frequent hangout for kids. >> everybody chilled on and hung out on right over there.

basically get away from all the scenery over here and don't worry about police messing with you. >> reporter: the ntsb just finished giving us a late briefing this afternoon. the investigators told us that the two operators on the train and a fireman who was on the train did not notice the derailment until it occurred. there was an automated emergency braking system that kicked in and they were not clear about why that system kicked in. howard county officials have reported to us this afternoon, sadly, that the girl's bodies were found under a huge pile of coal. beside the tracks and ne to an overturned car. reporting live, scott broom, 9news now. >> so sad and so many questions left, scott, thank you. we continue our live team coverage from james madison, university, that is where elizabeth nash was a student. >> andrea mccarren is on the campus tonight. >> today was move in day here

at jmu. normally a day of excitement and new beginnings. but early this morning, word began to spread that one of the sorority sisters was dead. >> it should be an exciting time for students to come back to school. t the loss of elizabeth is truly tragic. >> a sign paying tribute to elizabeth nass hangs outside her sorority house. she would have returned to alpha sigma alpha within days. >> our hearts go out to elizabeth's family and friends. i can't imagine what they are dealing with right now. >> nass and 19-year-old rose mayr, a nursing major at university of delaware were spending a final evening tother before returning to their respective universiti nass posted this photo minutes before their lives abruptly ended on a railroad bridge suspended high above ellicott city. minutes before she died, nass tweeted about her get together

and 11:40 p.m., 22 minutes before the derailment, she posted, drinking on top of the ellicott city sign with rose pedals. that was her friend's twitter handle. and just one day before, nass tweeted their upcoming plans. once more before i leave for school. you, me, handle of bernettes. plans to take public transportation weren't enough to keep those two young women alive. coming up tonight at 6:00, we'll hear some thoughts about nass from the sorority president. in harrisonburg, virginia, 9news now. >> and here's some more details on the derailed train. according to the ntsb, two locomotives were pulling two coal cars. the train weighed 9,000 tons and 3,000 feet long. that's more than half a mile. it was going 25 miles per hour at the time of the detrailment, which left 21 of 80 cars off the tracks.

>> police in prince georges county announced the arrest of a man in that crash monday that killed a police officer up oni- 95 in beltsville. there are still plenty of questions about the crash itself. we're going to get some answers from bruce leshan. >> absolutely. i have pride in what he did. >> morris' friends on the force taking sol lis that he died doing the job he dreamed about for years. >> he was little man on the big campus. he was going to be the big man one day, and he's the big man on campus now. >> morris and his partner were following a green acura with two men inside. they were suspected of trying to break into a car at a laurel gas station. it is unclear if the acura driver swerved and forced the police cruiser off the road, but we do know morris was ejected from the cruiser that he suffered severe head trauma and that he died at the

hospital. overnight, d.c. police found the acura on st. louis street southeast and questioning the one man that they found inside. >> i think the single biggest problem that we are all facing around the country, especially in major cities and suburbs around that is people that are stealing or robbing, breaking into cars to take property and resell it. >> and that could very quickly turn dangerous. >> yes, it could. >> police insist that they are still trying to determine if morris was wearing his seat belt. the other officer survived. also unclear is whether the officers had permission from commanders to pursue the acura. at the 23-year-old's laurel home, police from across the region gathered to comfort his family. his friends say morris was the kind of officer who tried to do everything by the book. >> he loved being the police.

turning now to the war in afghanistan. by u.s. general. the joint chief of staff was sleeping and he wasn't hurt. general demsey was visiting afghanistan. afghan security forces killed ten u.s. troops in the last ten weeks alone. general demsey took another aircraft to continue his tour. firefighters in northern california starting to gain ground on a wild fire that covers 16,000 acres. hard to imagine. >> huge, thousands of people forced out of their homes and many are calling shelters home. crews are trying to keep the massive wild fire. burned through several homes, along with dozens of farms.

now forcing thousands to evacuate. >> it's so scary. you don't know what to grab and you get here and forget things. >> debra is staying at a community center the red cross converted into a shelter. she lost the house to fire 15 years ago and hopes her current home survives. >> we lost everything we own. it's like, oh my gosh. nobody should have to go through this twice. >> fast moving fire covers more than 30 square miles. extra crews are being brought in to help keep the flames under control. about 1900 firefighters are working on the edge of the fire trying to box it in. officials say it is 35% contained and they expect to continue making progress. that's good news for katherine. she evacuated over the weekend and is hoping to go home soon. but worries what she'll find when she gets there. >> i cried. >> it's mostly just fear of not knowing. >> shifting winds are helping firefighters keep the flames away from homes. evacuees hope the weather

a whopping $90,000. that's the total fine for violations under the passenger bill of rights. the dot says jet blue did not follow a new rule that requires them to tell passengers every 0 minutes that they have permission to leave a plane if that flight has been delayed more than 30 minutes after a scheduled takeoff. in this case, transportation officials say the aircraft did not depart until three hours after boarding. the passenger bill of rights went into effect in 2010. and they are among the most popular vehicles out there, but they also top the national insurance crime bureau's list of the most stolen cars as well. and for the fourth straight year, the 1994 honda accord takes the number one spot. the honda civic and acura also crack the top ten, but there is a sliver, or a silver lining. no models made after 2006 made the list and car thefts are at a 44 year low. and the rumors are growing that the iphone 5 will be unveiled

her arlington home. on sunday afternoon, she gave her family the biggest scare of their lives. >> she was just not breathing and laying there and limp. i panicked. >> she was just finishing up lunch when her parents gave her cantaloupe. one got stuck in her throat. >> she's turning blue. >> okay, can you look in her mouth and see if you can see anything. >> her dad called 911 on sunday afternoon during lunch. he relayed instructions to his father who had cpr training. >> do you want to start cpr? >> i guess so, yeah. >> okay, listen carefully. i'll tell you what to do. lay the baby flat on the back. >> okay. >> following the operator's instructions, rick performed mouth to mouth on his granddaughter. >> completely cover the baby's mouth and nose with your mouth. blow two small breaths of air. >> tilted her mouth up and did

park. it happened last night at the econo lodge. police say the suspect robbed the hotel as well as two people inside. there were no injuries. montgomery county police attempted to track the suspects, but he got away. takoma park police asking for your help solving two burglaries that happened yesterday morning investigators believe the same two men were involved in both of these cases. the first burglary took place around 9:00 a.m. in the 7400 block of carol avenue. the second one, ten minutes later in the 200 block of spring street. the suspect's vehicle was found abandoned in d.c. there are new allegations of nepotism over at the air force authority. the washington examiner reports that at least four relatives of the authorities board members were given summer jobs. all working on the dulles project. it's not all that uncommon for parents to get summer jobs. and you might see traffic out on the new beltway express

lanes in northern virginia. that doesn't mean the lanes are open. the on road testing of the tolling and traffic management equipment is now being done and drivers on the beltway are being warned, stay alert, don't follow the testing vehicles into the express lanes. the testing is being done from the interchange over to the route 23 interchange in tyson's corner. and a warning out now to drivers around frederick. there is a very good chance you'll get caught the next time you pass a stopped school bus. that's because the county has installed cameras on its buses and today the sheriff's office and school administrators were showing off that new equipment. violators could get a $125 fine. they arenot playing around. >> some military moms in virginia were treated to a megababy shower today. virginia's first lady and author, heidi, hosted the shower for 100 new and expecting moms in springfield. the author of what to expect when you're expecting. great book. she and mcdonnell are partnered

move over nik wallenda, there's a new tight rope sensation out there. the daredevil in this case a woman carefully towing the line between these two moving trucks. the objective, walk from the top of one truck to the other as they barrel through a tunnel. line breaks, too close together, line goes slack. the stunt, which happened in crowe croatia is part of a volvo ad. >> i never black lined moving forward. >> she did do it. she did that stunt. it was pretty sick. the crew applauded her afterwards. >> if you fall over and get hurt, nobody is feeling sorry for you.
