and this time to the west side of town. i just checked out all the cameras on the dulles toll road. no problems in from sterling all the way into the beltway. looking good on 66 as well. we'll go through live. if you're planning to head inbound at 66 at route 23, a few people already out trying to get to work on time and they will because all lanes are open heading for fairfax and the beltway. i'll be back with more traffic coming up at 5:10. back to you. we have a horrible breaking news story to tell you about this morning. a local teenager shot to death late last night. >> it happened at a home in prince george's county. police found the girl's body in that house on chartsey street. that's in the kettering neighborhood of upper marlboro. kristin fisher is there with a live update. chris continue, what more do we know about this kill -- kristin, what more do we know about this killing? >> reporter: this is the home where this 17-yard girl's body was found right around 11:00 last night. right now prince george's county police say they have no suspects, no motive. all they will say is they are

investigating this as a possible home invasion. this is still a pretty active police scene here but i tell you what, just moments ago a truly heartbreaking scene to see. this 17-yard girl's body was -- 17-year-old girl's body was brought out, put in the coroner's van and standing watching the whole thing, the girl's mother. just incredibly difficult to watch. you can only imagine what she's going through right now. neighbors tell me the 17-year- old girl was hoping -- she aspired to go to harvard university. she was clearly a bright young girl and just a tragedy here this morning as prince george's county police try to figure out what happened. the call came in around 10:20 last night. when officers arrived on the scene, they found this 17-year- old girl's body inside the home. neighbors tell me that this is the girl's home. this is where she lived. this is where her mother lived. the mother was not home at the time of the shooting. this is according to neighbors. inside the home was just a 17-

year-old girl and her sister. but what exactly transpired inside the home we just don't know at this time. police say that's still under investigation. they have no lookout for any suspect, no idea who this person might be or why he or she would want to kill this 17- year-old girl. but police are asking if anybody has any information to call crime solvers. the number 1-866-411-tips. but again at this point in time we have no suspect, no motive. just a terrible tragedy that took place here late last night. back to you. >> thank you, kristin fish we are that live update from prince george's county. 5:03 now. at least nine people were injured after two boats collided off the coast of pasadena, maryland. seven people including either four or five children -- it's unclear at this point -- have been hospitalized. two others declined treatment. maryland state delegate don dwyer is among the people injured in this. people in other boats helped

rescue the victims. a fire spokesperson says while the injuries are considered serious, they are not believed to be life-threatening. still no word at this point on what caused the crash. doctors at the national institutes of health have quietly been battling a superbug. over the last 14 months, 17 patients were infected by the drug resistant bacteria. six of them died. the hospital was under no legal obligation to report the outbreak to local authorities. n.i.h. doctors say the general public was never at risk. the bug only attacks sick patients with an already weak immune system. now they say the superbug is under control. there have been no new cases since january. no new trial for convicted killer george hiewgley. that's the rule -- huguely. that's a ruling from a judge in charlottesville, virginia. he's scheduled to be sentenced on august 31 on the second- degree murder charges in the may 2010 beating death of his ex-girlfriend yeardley love. both of them played lacrosse at uva. the judge disagreed with

huguely's attorneys claims that significant mistakes were made before and during the february trial. d.c. mayor vincent gray is accusing ward 8 council member marian barry of playing politics all over the issue of installing smart meters in taxicabs. >> why anybody would want to stop this is absolutely beyond me. >> because the law allows it. >> marian barry went on to explain that a million dollar contract went to a company outside the district and a in town company is appealing that decision. so barry filed something called the resolution of disapproval and that puts a whole hold on the entire process. that means if it is to move forward, the cab drivers will be forced to pay for the new meters themselves till the whole thing is resolved. it is 5:05. time for the latest your money report of the morning. >> headline time. jessica doyle is here. >> the economy is looking like it needs a boost but at least people are paying attention. the federal reserve is signaling very aggressively it could step in. federal officials spoke about new ways to stimulate the

police are investigating the shooting death of a 17-year-old girl. >> the girl's body was found inside a home in upper marlboro. 9news now reporter kristin fisher joins us live from the scene with more on this story. good morning are, kristin. >> reporter: good morning. prince george's county police say that right now they are investigating this as a possible home invasion, but they just don't know for sure. it's still too early in the investigation. they started around 10:20 last night and there are still lots of police on the scene. there's a forensic team still inside combing the home for clues. but i tell you what. just moments ago i watched probably every single parent's worst possible nightmare. the mother of this 17-year-old girl that was murdered stood just a few feet away and watched as her daughter's body was being taken from their home. it was just beyond words. just impossible to describe the emotion coming from this poor, poor woman who's dealing with such an awful tragedy. friends of the family that were

with her tell me that this is their home. this 17-year-old girl lived in this home with her mother but her mother was not home at the time that this incident took place. the only person inside the home with that 17-year-old girl that i know of at this point was the girl's sister. but exactly what happened inside is still unknown. prince george's county police say the call came in around 10:20 last night. when they got here they went inside and that's where they found the 17-year-old girl's body. she was shot. we don't know by who. prince george's county police say they still have no suspects, no motive, and they really aren't releasing a whole lot of information at this point in time. earlier this morning, prince george's county police corporal leery johnson issued this statement. take a listen. >> still looking for suspects. still trying to establish a motive. if anyone has any information, heard anything, seen anything suspicious in the neighborhood, to please provide that

information to the police department or they can also notify crime solvers at 1-866- 411-tips. >> reporter: we still don't know the exact identity of this 17-year-old girl, but from what these friends of the family tell me, they say she was starting her senior year at a high school nearby in the area and that when she graduated high school, she had hopes of attending harvard university. that was her dream school. by all accounts she seemed a very bright young girl. just an awful tragedy taking place here this morning. back to you. >> that was heartbreaking to watch the mother having to go through something like this. kristin of course will have more information for us in her next -- in our next half-hour. services have been scheduled for the prince george's county police officer who died in the line of duty monday. a viewing for officer adrian morris will be held monday, august 27. it will be from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and then again from 7:00 to

9:00 p.m. at borgwardt's funeral home. his funeral will be tuesday at 9:00 a.m. at woodstream church in mitchellville. investigators have now released a photo of the suspect they're still looking for in this case of his name is kevon neal, 24 years old. they believe he was driving the car officer morris was pursuing when officer morris' patrol car crashed on i-95. he and his partner had been investigating reports of thefts from a gas station. investigators say it's going slowly but things are happening. they're being producted in ellicott city. that's where a csx train that was carrying coal derailed late monday night. crew members told investigators they had not noticed anything wrong when the train's emergency braking system kicked in automatically but it was because an air hose had ruptured on the train. coal spilled from the train cars and killed two 19-year- olds, elizabeth nass and rose

mayr. services for nass will be held today. mayr's funeral is set for saturday. d.c. police are investigating a crash that sent four pedestrians to the hospital. an suv jump add curb and plowed into a group of people yesterday. this was in d.c.'s columbia heights faked. it happened as dozens of people were lined up for some free produce from a local food bank. an eyewitness tells us the suv literally pinned one woman against the wall. we're told all the injured people are expected to recover, though. this afternoon a new task force established by d.c. mayor vincent gray will hold its first meeting. the task force is seeking solutions to the massive and lengthy power outages following the june 29derecho storm. mayor gray wants this group to look into the feasibility of putting more power lines underground around the district. the meeting at the wilson building starts at 1:00 p.m. it is open to the public. coming up on 5:35, time for another your money report now. >> jessica doyle is back with more consumer news. >> we've got some good signs

from the economy. so that's good to hear, right? we're seeing signs that the housing market is picking up and later this morning, we get another key housing report to look over. the commerce department releases new home sales figures. last month economists looking for a rebound after a decline in june. the sale of new homes has hit a two-year high in may. toll brothers is of course the company that builds high end homes said yesterday it's enjoying its most sustained demand in five years. it comes on the heels of a national association of realtors report that showed sales of previously owned homes rose 2.3% last month. sales have jumped more than 10% in the past year. that's a good thing. the federal government and mcdonald's has suspended purchases of meat from a california slaughterhouse. central valley meat company is under investigation for animal cruelty and possible health irks. these -- issues. these suspensions from mcdonald's and the government come after an animal welfare group took covert video and it showed cows that appeared to be sick or lame being beaten,

kicked, shot and even shocked in an attempt to get them to walk to slaughter. mcdonald's says behaviors in the video violate the standards that the fast food company demands from its suppliers. big change coming for a local whole foods. the store in clarendon, virginia is building a pub. the beer room will be named the arlington pub and it will offer bottled craft, local draft beers, wine by the glass and organic coffee bar in a pub style atmosphere. whole foods beer pub is scheduled to open september 20. part of this big craft beer trend we've been talking about here on the morning show. >> that's the thing about whole foods, you can find obscure kinds of beer there. we'll have to see if the pub thing works. >> it's working throughout the d.c. area. they're jumping on the trend that other proprietors have been opening up to a lot of fanfare. >> a grocery store experience. on the morning of august 23, 2011, carol king said it best. we were all a few hours away from feeling the earth move

good morning. welcome back to 9 news now. 5:35 on this thursday morning. looking forward to the weekend. are we going to have more storm as we go through the weekend? >> looks like sunday. some moisture may be coming in off the atlantic so we'll have to worry about that a little bit. saturday looks like the better day of the weekend to look ahead. for this afternoon, though, we're looking at again the outside chance of the isolated shower or thunderstorm. much like we've seen the last couple of days. not terribly widespread but what pops up could put down some heavy downpours and delay the nats once again. here's a look at our bus stop forecast this thursday morning. there's a patch of fog or two mainly well west of town in the mountains and out toward parts of the lower shenandoah valley of we have temperatures from the low 60s to the low 70s at the bus stop. a couple of spots right now have dipped into the upper 50s with sunrise at 6:29. we'll have a mix of clouds and sunshine once again today. 8 2k by 1 -- 82 by 11:00. winds fairly light. will turn southeasterly later on this afternoon as we approach the upper 80s for

highs. 86 at 3:00. again with the stray shower or storm this afternoon and we'll be 86 also for the drive home. so pretty good looking day. visibilities are down, especially west of town. cumberland to petersburg toward the harrisonburg, stanton area. a quarter mile visibility. got a couple of sprinkles well off to the south and east of from us richmond to st. mary's city. this stuff, i don't even know if any of it is reaching the ground. your temperatures are in the 60s. gaithersburg 61. tappahannock 66. out to the west where we have the fog, notice upper 50s, a little cooler. it's a little easier to get the fog to form. it's like a cold drink in the summer that gets the water on the outside of the glass. we have the condensation occurring there. culpeper 63. here in d.c. starting to see a couple of clouds and a little bit of light in the sky. 45 minutes or so before the sunrise.

we've got 72. officially mostly cloudy with calm winds and the humidity at 81% this morning. we'll continue to watch this stream of clouds southwest to northeast. thicker south and east of town than north and west. by the afternoon we'll see a couple of specks of green popping up. those are the isolated showers and thunderstorms that i'm talking about. quiet once again tonight. then tomorrow we're going to do the same thing. we'll get into the afternoon. some daytime heating. we'll pop the stray shower or thunderstorm. then friday afternoon, a little bit of moisture. winds still continue out of the southeast. that atlantic moisture moves in. we'll pop some showers and storms, maybe a few more into saturday afternoon. then sunday looks like even more than that. so every afternoon got that chance. that will be increasing toward the weekend. want to show you isaac very quickly here. there's tropical depression 10 which may bottom joyce. isaac, the more immediate problem. isaac is probably going to strengthen to maybe a hurricane by the time it gets to haiti here by early friday afternoon. going to cross haiti and weaken

and then cuba as a tropical storm. we'll see how weak it gets before it reemerges in the waters of florida straits. right now the track is just off shore of florida. so this would be maybe keeping the heaviest winds here till it made landfall somewhere in the florida panhandle. we'll have to watch for the west coast of florida as we head into early next week. looking at our seven-day forecast, we've got temperatures upper 80s the next few days with the mainly isolated afternoon thunderstorms. nighttime lows in the 60s. 70 in town. i've lowered the temperature to 84 sunday. 89 monday. as we head toward wednesday, we'll see if any of isaac's moisture makes its way up this waip. here comes monika samtani with timesaver traffic. good morning. if you're planning to head over on the major thoroughfares, you're now going to begin to see some volume forming but no big deals to report i'm happy to say unless you consider this a big deal. 16 miles an hour.

as the ponderosa wildfire threatens yet another town. fire officials now say flames have consumed 70 structures and are moving towards another 550 buildings. the fire is 55% contained but it has already destroyed more than 24,000 acres. so not only is tropical storm isaac threatening to ruin next week's republican convention in tampa, the storm is also postponing pretrial hearings for five terror suspects held at ingmar guandique bay. -- at guantanamo bay. 5:51. in campaign 2012, a new cbs poll is out this morning just days ahead of the republican convention which is scheduled to start monday in tampa, hurricane allowing. >> that's right. the survey focuses on voters in some of the big swing states. susan mcginnis takes a look inside the numbers. >> reporter: workers are putting the finishing touches on the convention floor before republicans arrive in tampa.

florida is a key battleground state in the race for the white house and mitt romney is gaining ground in the sunshine state. the latest quinnipiac university, cbs news, "new york times" poll of swing states shows romney has moved into a virtual tie with president obama in florida and wisconsin. president obama maintains a healthy margin in ohio. romney has made up ground in two of the three states surveyed since the first poll three weeks ago. in florida a big league among senior citizens has helped romney cut the president's lead in half since the august 1 poll. he gained four points in wisconsin but had no change in ohio. paul ryan appears to be the reason wisconsin is now back in play. a third of voters say ryan's place on the ticket makes them more likely to support mitt romney. since naming congressman ryan as his vp candidate, romney has spent a lot of time focusing on medicare. ryan's signature issue. now he's refocusing on the

i thought the sample that was actually d.c. or bottled water was the tap water. >> reporter: d.c. water has an uphill battle to change the public's perception of tap water. it stems from reports of more than ten years ago that lead levels in water from certain lead pipes exceeded the environmental protection agency's standards. >> bottled water is not as regulated. we feel we're the better choice. >> reporter: d.c. water kicked off its water taste test challenge on wednesday, a program that will go to each ward every week to educate the public about the safety and advantages of drinking d.c. tap water. it's clearly a challenge because some people are still skeptical, like janice jones. >> when you do the -- you can -- it seems there's something more there than there needs to be. >> i don't want to drink
