12:02 pm
was an affable child with an infectious smile. >> reporter: prince george's county police are now searching for her killer. around 10:00 last night someone kicked into the front door of her home, went to her bedroom where she was in bed and then shot her several times. >> we're told somebody entered the home. we don't know -- i don't want to say one person or more than one. we know at least one person. >> reporter: neighbors say other people were inside the home but escaped through a window. amber's older sister, her son and a teenage foster child also living in the same home. a few hours later, amber's mother who was not home at the time. the shooting watched as her daughter's body was taken from the home she grew up in. >> to see the mother going through what she had to go through, i wouldn't wish that on anyone. >> reporter: so far police say they have no sus sphects add -- suspects and no motive. neighbors say they have no idea why anyone would want to kill her. >> she was a nice, quiet little girl. didn't bother nobody or nothing like that. >> a good kid.
12:03 pm
you never saw her hanging out in the neighborhood. you would see her going to school and coming home. that's it. >> reporter: several neighbors have told me that earlier this week, police were called to this home regarding a complaint from the foster child that lived here. neighbors also say that they saw tension building between that foster child and amber's mother. they say it had been building for months but when i asked prince george's county homicide detectives about that, if there was possibly any sort of connection, they would not comment except to say they're investigating all possible angles. jc? >> all right, thank you very much, kristin fisher. a 15-year-old girl suffered life-threatening injuries after she was struck while riding her bike. this happened on woodfield road near airpark road in gaithersburg this morning. the driver who hit the girl stayed on the scene and is talking to investigators about
12:04 pm
what happened. montgomery county police closed the southbound lanes of woodfield road during the morning rush commute to reconstruct that collision, but the road has since reopened. the howard county medical examiner says that the two women killed in that deadly train derailment were crushed to death by the weight of coal. officials still do not know what actually caused that derailment. howard county executives have called for a safety review to educate the community about proper railroad safety. the two women killed were sitting on the side of the bridge at the time of the accident. no one was injured but hundreds of residents were forced out of their homes after a freight train and a fuel tanker collided. it hammed this morning in wills point about 45 miles east of dallas, texas. authorities are still on the scene trying to figure out exactly what happened. there will be a moment of silence held at saturday's

redskins game for a prince george's county police officer adrian morris. morris died during a high speed pursuit on monday. police are still looking for a second person involved in that pursuit. and funeral arrangements have been announced for officer morris. a viewing will take place on monday, august 27, from 2:00 p.m. till 4:00 p.m. and from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at borgwardt's funeral home located in beltsville, maryland. funeral services will be held next tuesday at woodstream church on lottsfield road in mitchellville, maryland. the race for the white house is even closer in the battleground states. a new cbs news-"new york times" poll says that president obama is holding on to a lead in ohio but danielle nottingham reports that mitt romney is closing the gap in two other key states. >> reporter: a new cbs news-
12:06 pm
"new york times"-quinnipiac university poll shows president obama just three points ahead over republican challenger mitt romney in florida. last month the president held a six-point advantage there. in wisconsin the race is a virtual tie thanks in part to romney's bp pick wisconsin congressman paul ryan. >> do you think raiding medicare to pay for obama care and putting bureaucrats in charge of cutting is an achievement? >> reporter: polls show most voters think president obama would do a better job on health care and medicare than the republican ticket. >> you would think they would avoid talking about medicare given the fact that both of them have proposed to voucherrize the medicare system. >> reporter: the polls also show a gender gap with mitt romney with the president holding a double digit lead among women in all three battleground states surveyed. the comments missouri senate candidate todd akin made are giving the democrats ammunition to try and widen that gap. >> what i think these comments
12:07 pm
do underscore is why we shouldn't have a bunch of politicians, a majority of whom are men, making health care decisions on behalf of women. >> reporter: romney is campaigning in new mexico today and shifting the conversation to energy, something he often mentions on the stump. >> our coal, our gas, oil, our wind, our solar, nuclear, we're going to take advantage of the energy that we have here. >> reporter: romney will roll out details of a plan he says will create more jobs for the middle class. danielle nottingham, cbs news, washington. first responders in anne arundel county had a very busy night. they fought an early morning blaze after two boats caught fire at the south river marina. no one was injured. investigators are trying to determine exactly how that fire got started. wednesday evening nine people, including maryland state delegate don dwyer and
12:08 pm
five children were injured when two boats collided on the river. wiments say that one of the boats was towing a -- witnesses say that one of the boats was towing a child in a tube when the two boats crashed. many rushed out to help pull victims to safety. >> they both pitched up and debris, you know, flew out of the boat. i got a neighbor who had a boat and we went out and immediately aided and got the people on our boat and brought them on shore so paramedics could tend to them. >> none of the injuries are life threatening. still to come when 9news now continues, hundreds of homes are in jeopardy as crews try to contain a massive wildfire out west. we'll have details. but first, some are outraged over a move by officials at the national institutes of health keeping hush about a deadly super virus at one of their
12:09 pm
clinics.
12:10 pm
i'm one on one right now with the montgomery county state's attorney john mccarthy. we're talking about bullying. not normal bullying in school. school is about to start. we're talking about bullying on the internet which is something new to me. i really hadn't heard of that. >> some of the shocking aspects, 88% of young people in america
12:11 pm
have been subject to bullying on the internet. some may be direct bullying where it's right to their own facebook page or message page but some of the bullying also occurs on maybe a poster where people might decide to start posting things about you that are true or not true, about sexual orientation, about what you've done and haven't double. so there's a lot of -- done. so there's a lot of bullying. nine out of ten young people in america say they've been bullied in some form over the internet. >> it's big. >> it's absolutely huge. we've known that's been a huge aspect that we've had to deal with here in montgomery county. i will tell you we've been working closely in conjunction with montgomery county schools and dr. starr who is the superintendent so publicly talk about it, get out there and talk about internet safety in general and bullying in particular because it's such a problem for us in our schools. >> what can parents and children do? >> well, i think there's a number of things a parent can
12:12 pm
do. number one, lieu for changes in be-- you look for changes in behavior in your child. the more traditional bullying might have been where somebody beat you up or did something on the way to school, a physical kind of a thing. this can be just as damaging. there can be changes in behavior in your child and parents should be aware of those changes in behavior. another thing you can do, particularly if your child is going on to a social network and you suspect some of this is going on through facebook or whatever, make sure your child friends you. make sure you monitor the activities of your child online. make sure that you take -- if a computer is in your home, make sure the computer is in a public place, maybe near where you're cooking dinner so you can monitor what's happening and also this is a new thing that's happened in the last couple of years. now that young people have iphones and the i phones allow them access to all their social media and to the internet, one of the things i think you've got to begin to think about is at the end of the day when your child is going to go to bed at
12:13 pm
night and you can no longer monitor the activity on the internet, now they're going to use their phone. take the phone at the end of the day. charge their child's phone because what happens is when they go to bed at 10:00, 11:00 at night, they're up in their room using the internet services and their friends are texting or tweeting them all night long. they don't get a good night's sleep and they're subject to bullying all night long. they'll be harassed throughout itself course of the evening. it could also occur in dating relationships, too, where a young man is harassing a young lady, doesn't want his attention. >> very important information. parents, remember, you've got to be proactive. >> absolutely. >> got to be involved. thank you for being here. >> thank you. when we come back, howard has the forecast.

12:18 pm
people in the clinic with compromised immune systems. special units were built to protect patients and staff. >> we had staff members who were assigned 24 hours a day, seven day as week to stay in those units and ensure that visitors, health care personnel all washed their hands and put on gowns and gloves appropriately. >> n.i.h. officials say that this does not pose a risk to the general public and there have been no new cases since january. those wildfires out west are continuing to send thousands of residents running for safety. more than 500 homes and businesses in northern california are in that fire's path. the blaze has destroyed nearly 70 homes and scorched more than
12:19 pm
24,000 acres. >> a rough fire season out west. >> it is. >> how are you doing? >> i'm well. i'm well. we have a nice day going. we're going to get maybe an isolated storm or two. a couple of concerns for the weekend because a little moisture in the atlantic wants to work its way back toward us. of course we're watching isaac and now joyce. we have a new tropical storm. i'm not worried about joyce but isaac could threaten florida by early next week. here's a look at the allergy upday. blame the mold spores. weeds are also up and grass and trees are down. looking at the forecast, the day planner for the afternoon. good deal of sunshine though i am expecting some isolated thunderstorms as we get into the afternoon here, especially in the blue ridge, potomac highlands, those areas. some of those storms -- isolated ones could make it closer to the metro. 88, 89 for the high will happen at 3:00, 4:00. winds turning southeast 5 to 10. if you have plans this evening, i think you'll be in pretty good shape other than the stray thunderstorm with 80 degrees still at 9:00 p.m. so a comfortable evening out there. tonight we get down to about
12:20 pm
70. 60ish in the outer suburbs. clouds thicker to the south and east, especially the carolinas. we're looking nice and sunny and warm. already up to 85 in town. 84 in cambridge. we've got 82 down across newland. 80 in reidville. a very comfortable afternoon here. martinsburg just at 80. as you look outside on the michael & son weather camera, we have high thin clouds giving us a little bit of hazy sun. just a few fair weather clouds out there. mostly sunny, 85. feeling like 86 on the heat index. the humidity fairly low at 48%. we're doing well. we've got the showers and storms in the southwest extending up to minneapolis and northern wisconsin. but it's really been along the gulf coast. northern florida through the carolina coast. look at all this moisture. this boundary has been here for days. when you get a boundary like that, it wants to focus the energy and if it's still there when isaac heads this way, it may be a path for isaac first headed toward florida and then northeast. for us, see the moisture off
12:21 pm
shore? it's going to stay there for the most part other than the isolated shower or storm we could see for the next couple of days. tomorrow we'll pop some more isolated storms in the afternoon. but by saturday, looks like a little piece of low pressure may try to come through the delmarva and throw some moisture back at us for the afternoon. here we are at 4:45 into saturday evening. and this may be around sunday. so both days we may see an increase in showers and storms. i told you about joyce. that was tropical depression 10. been upgraded this morning. but isaac, the much bigger concern. joyce i'm not going to worried about right now -- worry about right now but isaac is headed for haiti the next couple of days, then cuba and then florida. here's the timetable. it's now only at 40 miles per hour gusting to 50. could be a hurricane crossing haiti friday night, saturday morning. over cuba saturday night, sunday morning. then potentially toward key west by overnight sunday night. here we are at 2:00 monday morning. then off the florida coast here, western florida noon tuesday. should be far enough off shore
12:22 pm
if this track stays the same. then we won't have too many problems in florida. 88 degrees until the panhandle today. tonight 70 'ish. isolated storm tomorrow, 89. tune in with topper later on. we may have to go yellow alert saturday if the thunderstorm threat looks like it might be increasing. sunday 84. then we'll see what happens with isaac by next wednesday. stick around. we'll be right back with 9news now at noon in a moment.
