tonight a man hunt is on for the person who broke down the home and murdered a 17-year- old honor student. she had big dreams and tonight there are big questions like why would someone invade her home and bring her young life to such a violent end? bruce leshan is live with the latest on this story. what do we know now? >> reporter: we know this is incredibly chilling as she was going to bed right up here last night when someone kicked in her front door, went through the house, up to her room, burst into her bedroom. and opened fire. investigators admit that they are at a loss that this case is complete mystery to them at this point and just a short time ago, a couple dozen suspects turned up, canvassing throughout the neighborhood here going door to door with this flier, passing it out with the picture of this beautiful young woman here on it, just pleading with somebody to come

forward so that they could get the killer off the streets. a beauty with an infectious smile. a bookworm with big dreams. harvard next fall and then law school. and now, she is suddenly dead. shot repeatedly by a man who broke down her front door and invaded her bedroom. >> just watching her grow up to be a beautiful young girl. that's really what is so heart wrenching because she was just, you know, a beautiful kid. >> reporter: her mother brushed away tears as they remove the teenagers body in the darkness before dawn. neighbors say that they dove out the window after the killer broke in. and police spent hours hunting for clues, but neighbors say that this is far from the first time that police have been to the split-level middle class

neighborhood. and just a day before the neighbor -- just before the murder, neighbors said that police were here. they are looking at everything. >> we do not have a lookout right now. as school started, they announced that she had been murdered. >> the students were shaken. they came up anded told stories of amber, how she had such an infectious smile and how she will be missed by all. >> reporter: so they said that they have no suspect, no motive, no explanation. they do have a reward though. they are offering a reward talking about it on the flier as they really want to catch this guy. he's a cold-blooded killer as far as they can tell who would

just burst into a house and kill a teenage girl. each one of those cases they are desperate to solve. >> yes, thank you, bruce. new developments in last month's deadly shooting at a movie theater in colorado. writings that he sent to the university psychiatrist. he's accused of wounding 68 others in that theater. >> reporter: within year ago, we were trying to understand what was happening to us about

five hours earlier. it was sent here, but felt in more than two dozen states. fortunately no one was killed and only minor injuries were reported. but that quake did cause between $200 to $300 million in daniels. they approved more than $39 million for virginia and more than 7,200 households. >> reporter: they were left to recover on their own. and for example, fixing the damage at the national cathedral, costing an estimated $20 million. today, they got a $5 million boost. the story from surae chinn. >> reporter: the bell will chime at the exact moment that they shook below the national cathedral just a year ago.

they had the $20 million task of repairing the damaged views on top of the central tower. this piece was great during this view. >> so we'll gather here today. >> after a blessing to the afternoon and for the restorations of the spiritual home. >> he hosted the first repair. >> reporter: one year ago we were crawling up here for the very first time. stumbling around on the stones that were falling here. >> reporter: and just like this, they crumbled. had the earthquake lasted just a few seconds later that this piece would have came crashing down. >> it took just under a century for them to get that on top of it. it took just under a minute to bring some of them down. >> reporter: today a $5 llion donation from the endowment will go a long way to repairing

this landmark. they are daunting for the tallest building in the capitol. >> how do you reenforce this so they could withstand another earthquake? we are 60 some-odd seats. >> reporter: but the team, they have great faith that it will be done. on top the national cathedral, surae chinn, 9news now. >> that money is nice, but remember those repairs are expected to take ten years. they have received nearly $80 million before today. but they needed a historic preservation work bringing a total to $54 million needed to completely restore the hand mark. they felt be more than 100 aftershocks in the last year. most of those have been centered in and around virginia. they were in town there today where people are still trying to recover. >> reporter: a year ago toda the world seemed to be tumbling down around them. his store, it is miller's

market in virginia. the epic center of the 5.8 earthquake. losing be more than $200,000 and he was hopeful that he would get some help, but no help ever came. >> you still see the cracks on the floor. again, no one helped me. >> reporter: but they came to the county and toured the damaged buildings. >> this is not going to be another big one. >> no place in the county where more people felt that earthquake than right here at the high school. their building has been damaged beyond repair. every person will remember that day. >> yes, i'm terrified. i didn't know what it was. i didn't think that it was an earthquake as i thought that something went wrong with the school. >> a lot went wrong with the school. and the structural damage was just too great to repair it. and so this week, the demolition will begin.

occurred or the size and the magnitude, at least you can prepare for them. >> they are planned for much of the east coast. this will be the first time that d.c., maryland, virginia, that they will all take part in the stop, drop, hold exercise that will be already done in other parts of the country. and another disaster that you can always prepare for is a hurricane. tonight, tropical storm isaac is moving west. topper is tracking the storm from the weather center. >> reporter: yeah well it is still a tropical storm that winds are barely a tropical storm 30 miles per hour or higher with the tropical storm that they have 40 miles per hour winds. let me show you the track here. that we do have the hurricane warnings in effect for the southeast and all the coast of haiti and the tropical storm warning is in effect for the north coast of the d.r. this is a track for the hurricane center that they will need to take on sunday and monday and tuesday and the keys and end up on the west side of florida. right now it's about 255 miles southeast in the d.r.

old was killed when he was hit by a trash truck backing out of the same one. he is calling on the d.c. department of transportation to look for another way to manage traffic in that area. >> and some fans may have come away with more on the agony of defeat. the maryland department of health says they may have been exposed to rabieses. a bat apparently landed on someone sitting in the .500 section of the bank stadium last friday night. the health department is concern that anyone who touched that bat may have been exposed to rabies. some of us will be fine before you dash out for work. but it's a different story here today. the education secretary arnie duncan expressed to make sure that free break fast will be available for every child who needs it. >> and their stomachs are growling. it will be pretty hard to compensate as we will have over

10 million children. and they are not receiving them as we need to close up the gap. >> a new study shows that three out of five teachers in maryland say that they have children that will come to class hungry as say they'd that it is extremely important to academic success and 15% of those teachers will buy food for their students every week. and still ahead, the flooding was caught on tape. find out how the waters rose quickly with little warning.

it involved about five children. the delegate of the county told reporters yesterday that it is true that he was drinking, while operating this 26-foot bar hop view on the river on wednesday. and he asked for forgiveness. >> there was some concern. >> in the meantime, police said today that evidence at the scene lead them to take a blood sample. that the delegate who is a leader in the fight has not been charged. and results of the blood test will not be known for as many as 30 days. five kids, ages 5-12 were involved. the injuries were ranging from the bruises to the broken bones. they were left into their own boats to save their victims being called heroes. in all, nine people were injured. and he is still in the hospital

they agree. we can no longer see that there and there is at least something saying that we'll go into miami or point a little further south over to the keys, into the gulf of mexico. it is still not set in stone by any means, but there are indications though that it will become a hurricane once again as you need to get into the gulf of mexico, losing their punch for cuba. right now a live look outside. it is fantastic outside. i mean a great night to do anything. 85 degrees. comfortable humidity. pretty good deal. the pressure is steady at 30.11 inches of mercury. live doppler 9000. most of the showers are out. they are getting hammered with an inch and a half of rain so far and another inch on the way as you can see the red, that will be the rain fall rates in an hour and just to the south. but lighter. now, we just had this pop up literally in the last 20 minutes, out towards here and paris. and that is actually working their way here southward across 50 and becoming a little

stronger. so the isolated showers will be possible tonight and for the most part a nice evening. don't change your plans if you have the outdoor plans. temperatures, 83 here and also in fairfax, very comforble. 84 in arlington and 86 at college park. but again relative humidity will be very comfortable. isolated showers and storms tonight. you can still walk the dog. open up the windows. i mean temperatures will be in the 60s in most places. a strong finish for the week tomorrow and then well, we'll be going downhill here. and it was light by morning. partly cloudy. limit your time outdoors please. partly cloudy and warm. and the next three days, and a slight chance of the showers tomorrow. no big deal.

redskins, ranking 27th in the league. now, he could not get more than two words out before his emotions took over. >> i really, i really was not expecting anything. to getting emotional. i was truly blessed, you know? >> yes, obvious being the redskins and the broncos. their kids and wife were in attendance along with their parents. saying that they sacrificed so much to play football as they never missed a game. and he is not in the care as he is still alive. and i could do the things that they will do. so you know it is all good as you would like to say it.
