a deadly family tragedy tops our 6:00 news hour. >> two young procedures just 4 and 6 years old killed when flames ripped through their home in winchester, virginia, and today friends and family are mourning the loss. >> reporter: i'm surae chinn in winchester, virginia, a family, the neighborhood, this community in morning after the loss of these two little boys. the children were up in that second floor bedroom. the youngest boy would have turned 5 next week. the family tried desperately to save them, but it was too late. >> god, don't let your kids go to bed without hugging them tonight, please. >> reporter: message from a grieving grandfather of 4-year- old braden and 6-year-old landon. >> you can lose them so quick and it's just not worth. it. >> reporter: family friends say the boy's step grandfather was woke up by the hallway smoke detector around 9:30 last

night. >> the mom was screaming trying to get them out and the boys were unresponsive. they had no idea what was going on until -- they're trying to get them out, but they never could. >> reporter: the fire marshal is still investigating a cause but say it's not suspicious. the family was renting this home and the fire marshal says if there is no smoke detector in each room, leave the kids' bedroom door open at night. in winchester, virginia, surae chinn, 9 news now. >> damage from the fire estimated at $35,000. the cause is still under investigation. an unusual bank robbery today in georgetown caught on tape, but it's a familiar m.o. for investigators. >> reporter: i'm scott broom with the fbi in washington where there's been yet another bank break-in, not through the front door, but through the wall. a bold burglar caught on camera at 2 a.m. today after breaking through walls in a failed attempt to get to an atm machine. the damage left behind at the m&t bank at 1420 wisconsin in georgetown so bad that

firefighters were called in to ensure safety during the investigation today. it may well be the same suspect or suspects who have done it before. here's a burglar in a similar tyvek suit on video august 17th inside a bank of america and again cameras caught two suspects in the same location doing the same thing may 24th. >> he's ending up in a room that houses the atm machine. >> reporter: in each case the burglar or burglars fled without managing to steal a dime for all their effort, but doing a lot of damage nonetheless. with the fbi in washington, scott broom, 9 news now. >> firefighters determined the bank in georgetown is safe despite the damage. the second suspect has turned himself in in the chase that killed a prince george's county police officer. kevon neal surrendered around midnight after an intense policeman hunt. >> reporter: i'm bruce leshan

in beltsville. police say officer morris died trying to camp a couple suspected car thieves. here -- catch a couple suspected car thieves. here at the station they take a small measure of comfort that both those suspects are now off the street. police carted kevon neal off to jail and reporters asked him if he felt any responsibility for the crash that killed officer adrian morris. the young officer was allegedly pursuing neal down i-95 at speeds up to 100 miles an hour. >> you're being blamed for his death. should you be? >> no. >> reporter: police arrested neal's alleged partner kenneth mitchell the day after the crash for alleged felony theft of an automobile. prosecutors have yet to charge either in officer morris' death, but state's attorney says if she can prove that they caused the wreck, she could level vehicular homicide charges against them. >> we're going to be fair, but we really do have an eye toward

doing justice in this case. >> reporter: officer morris a funeral is scheduled for tuesday. bruce leshan, 9 news now. >> officer morris was thrown from his cruiser as it rolled over repeatedly and police confirm he was not wearing a seatbelt. the police chief says unfortunately sometimes in the heat of battle buckling up is not an officer's first reaction. a disgruntled worker now blamed for a deadly shooting right near the empire state building downtown new york city. the gunman identified as - year-old jeffrey johnson shot and killed a former colleague. witnesses say johnson fired indiscriminately into the crowd and the commuters and the tourists on busy 55th avenue. victims fell to the ground. others were scrambling back into the skyscraper lobby. >> i saw a woman sitting up against the building. her foot had been shot and then i looked halfway down at the doors where you enter the empire state building and the shooter was on the ground and he had been shot.

>> johnson was shot and killed by the police. nine other people are hospitalized about gunshot wounds. new york's mayor mike bloomberg says some of them were wounded by police gunfire in all the chaos, all of them expected to survive. the shooting outside the empire state building followed another wild shootout near yankee stadium when a man identified as an ordained minister pulled out a gun and shot two people. horace coleman and other food vendors began to argue over a spot. it became heated and that's when coleman pulled out his gun. witnesses at a diner saw the whole thing. >> he turned around and shot the man in the newsstand. then he turned around, shot down the block a couple bullets. >> everybody was having lunch and all of a sudden we just heard like five, four pops and everybody started running. >> both victims were transported to the hospital. one is in critical condition. coleman's family said he must have committed these actions in

self-defense. they say he doesn't curse or fight, but they also did not know he had a gun. he better get what he deserves, some kind of punishment, he being maryland state delegate don dwyer and those stern words coming from the imagine whose boat collided with dwyer's boat -- man whose boat collided with dwyer's body wednesday on the magothy river. >> if this ends up quieting down and going away without some kind of reprimand that is sufficient and abrupt enough to stop this kind of behavior not only in him, but in many other places, i'd like it to be a wakeup call to everybody. >> by the way, that was the magothy river and that is randy harvin. he and his grandkids were injured in the whole ordeal. delegate dwyer admitted he was drinking while operating his boat and suggests he was drinking a lot, so far no charges. investigators say they do not have results on dwyer's blood alcohol content and plan to reconstruct the accident to pin down who was at fault.

now to video, a woman jumping from the car onto the beltway clutching a 20-month- old son. they had been sitting at a gas station in baltimore when a man climbed behind the wheel and took off with them. it happened a year ago. this police dashcam video released today. police chased the carjacker into montgomery county before he decided to give up. as the car slowed down the woman jumped out with her son. they weren't seriously hurt. today that carjacker pleaded guilty to kidnapping. acclaimed american cyclist lance armstrong has been stripped of his seven tour de france titles. that move came after the u.s. anti-doping agency charged the cancer survivor with using performance enhancing drugs to win all those races. armstrong released a statement saying there comes a point in every man's life where he has to say enough is enough and for me that time is now. the anti-doping agency said it had 10 of armstrong's former teammates ady to testify

against him. >> given that he's chosen not to contest it's a legal fact that he's now disqualified and has a permanent ban from sport competition. >> if is unclear who will be declared the winner of the seven tour de france races that armstrong won because a lot of those second place finishers have also been accused of using performance enhancing drugs. well, it's fair to say that armstrong's seven tour de france wins helped launch cycling from being a niche sport in this country to a sport that at the very least is in a bigger niche. so now what happens to his legacy? whatever you thought of lance armstrong -- >> i think lance armstrong has been an incredible motivator. >> i've been a lance armstrong fan during his era of just total dominance in the sport. >> -- you'll notice have to add convicted doper to the list d forfeit technician gonzalo escobar and other -- and for fit technician gonzalo escobar and others we caught up with at

the cycling store it wasn't that big of a stretch. >> he got cancer and all of a sudden he's demolishing not just beating people but humiliating people in the mountains. >> for us a lot of my friends when we have conversations about this i think we all agree he was probably on something at some point. >> i think that if he wasn't guilty, he would fight. it he has enough money, power, great lawyers. >> but apparently no more stomach for the fight, a shocking development says former pro praiser brian walton who says armstrong as -- pro racer brian walton who sees armstrong as the ultimate competitor. >> so much of the evidence points towards guilt and i really think it's a shame that he has given up his fight at this stage of the game and if is so far removed from his -- it is so far removed from his m.o. >> wall ton says this does mean for now the -- walton says this does mean for now the public won't hear the damning evidence

including the teammates as evidence meaning the lance armstrong the icon will become lance armstrong the martyr. >> i believe the doping era in cycling is over and a page has been turned. >> we will have much more on the doping scandal at 7:00. i'll be speaking with a sports psychiatrist and a consultant to the u.s. anti-doping agency. so we'll see you then. now to the latest on the location of the storm known as isaac. i'm in the weather center where topper is keeping his eyes all over this. it's a mammoth storm. >> not so much a windstorm, but rainstorm. let me show you the satellite picture. we're talking 10 to 20 inches of rain possible now for haiti as we go through the next 48 hours. so that's going to be the big problem with this storm. winds are only 65 miles per hour now. 100 miles south, southeast of port-au-prince and all of the dominican and haiti has a tropical storm warning in effect as does the eastern 1/2

of cuba. here is the latest track from the national hurricane center, takes you back through the keys sunday off through the west coast of nor sunday and monday and maybe -- florida sunday and monday and maybe making landfall on tuesday. if it takes this threat, i think florida will be spared the high winds. if it goes further east, i think heavy rainfall and not so much strong winds in tampa. when we come back, we'll talk about our own little system that may affect our weekend. up next new developments in the colorado theater shooting investigation, it looks like police are closing in on a potential motive. we'll have that story and more straight ahead on 9news.

the suspect in the deadly shooting in norway received the maximum sentence today. anders breivik smiled and raised his fist in a salute as he was sentenced to 21 years in prison. officials there can prevent him from being released indefinitely. breivik admitted blowing up the oslo headquarters and killing 69 people at the rolling hills summer camp, most of them young people. 77 people were killed in norway's worst massacre since world war ii. new information about the suspect in the aurora, colorado theater massacre. prosecutors say the shooter james holmes failed a key exam

at university of colorado six weeks before he opened fire inside that theater spraying it killing 12 people and wounding dozens more. legal analysts say it's clear prosecutors are demanding school records because they're building a case of revenge. in another development newly filed court papers say holmes told a classmate he wanted to kill people four months before the shooting happened. coming up on 9news swept away, dramatic video captures a teenager's fight to survive in some fast moving waters.

new video released today shows the chaos aboard a run- away montgomery county ride on bus. the most dramatic view comes from the driver's perspective as it shows the bus plowing into a home on avondale road in silver spring. police say no one on the bus or in the home was seriously injured. that accident is still under investigation. caught on tape a close call indeed for a teen-ager in nevada. he was being swept away by swift waters in boulder city. look at this. somebody throws him a rope. he's unable to grab it. finally two people wade out and get him to safety. that teen was headed directly toward a steep cliff. >> talk about jumping in right in the nick of time. >> the power of water. >> not to mention what's floating along whim or what he runs into before he gets to that cliff, nothing good about

that hot, winds southeast at 9 and pressure steady. satellite and radar combined, this is our little weathermaker. it's been on the map for a while. we have a lot of showers as the storm will lift to the north. that will produce showers and even thunderstorms i think tomorrow afternoon, tomorrow night and part of sunday. showers moving in now, grab your umbrella if you're headed out and keep it really handy tomorrow. i do think saturday afternoon will be wetter than saturday morning. radar, here are the showers working their way right up 95 down toward richmond headed up into southern maryland. they'll be into southern maryland, charles county, st. mary's county before they get into the district and points north. currently temps are great. 80 in bethesda, 82 vienna, 79 in fairfax. that's a pretty good deal and 83 in college park. we're looking at locate the umbrella, rain coming, might need it tonight. you will need it saturday. i think you will be wetter saturday afternoon than

morning. we're kind of slicing hairs, though, and still wet sunday, especially in the morning. tonight mostly cloudy, comfortable, some showers, maybe a late thunderstorm, low temperatures in the 60s, winds easterly at 10. next three days code yellow saturday and sunday because of the thunderstorm chances, 79 saturday, 83 sun, nice monday, even a thunderstorm possible, but still pretty nice, temperatures around 90. we'll make it code green. next seven days near 90 tuesday, isolated storm and wednesday we have a little cloud. that is what's left of isaac trying to duck south of us and go out to sea which is kind of a shame. we could use some of that rain. it's nice thursday, hot by next friday, maybe 90s. >> look at the change, wow. >> big time change. >> haven't had 90s for a while, okay. look, the redskins had a good event tonight. >> yup. >> information nice and dry. the game, topper -- it was nice and dry. the game, topper is saying i

orchestrated the hog. chris sandals there, stalwart and clinton portis who just retired yesterday. as for today's luncheon, several present day redskins in the house including, of course, rg3. look at those guys dressed to the 9's today. of course, it's a big pump up the team banquet, but brian orakpo says when it comes to season predictions, he'd rather talk it than walk it. >> hopefully we're looking forward to a big year this year. i'm not going to make any high expectations this year obviously because we tend to do that all the time and kind of somewhat get disappointed, but this year i think we're just going to be quiet and create some havoc. >> let's talk about the ravens as well. you'll see 10 ravens regular season games on wusa9 this year and by the looks of it, you'll see a really good football team, joe flacco playing and playing well last night, 2 touchdowns, 266 yards and they were sharper all around. john harbaugh had one word for it. listen up.
