sports network, you focus on the quarterbacks, which means you'll focus in on rookie quarterbacks this season. you experienced it. you lived it in this league. one of the toughest things to do is come in and play that position in your first year. >> phil: i would say it used to be. i don't know anymore as you look at it. they are so well prepared. andrew luck and russell wilson have been unbelievable in their outings so far. i don't know that andrew luck did toght. and i thought that weeden had a chance playing green bay quarte hate to say it but the cliche, it's over. they are ready to play. >> ian: is it because of the offenses in college football are just so much more advanced they come in ready to go? >> phil: no question. right behind my house, the town

football field. and you look at andrew luck, big numbers again. and they got to be ecstatic up there. but the youth football, fourth and fifth graders, i watch them and they are throwing the football. they are throwing it that young. high school, colleges, out of control. and now they get all the wonderful experience and know the simple things you need to know in the and they come in and they are not intimidated. >> ian: and you said something a couple of days ago that absolutely wowed me. because at morehead state you threw for over 2,000 yards and thought, i don't believe i threw for over 2,000 yards in a season. and that's nothing. and it's cory hall with the catch. >> phil: and shows how much it's changed. i threw for 4,000 in the and, boy, that's almost unbreakable.

thank you for joining us. the top two picks in the nfl draft squared off at fedex field today. tonight, rg-iii and the skins are basking in that impressive preseason win over andrew luck and the colts. dave owens is out there. >> reporter: so what did we learn in this first rg-iii versus andrew luck showdown? we certainly saw why both were drafted where they were. griffin showed arm strength and athleticism, but his overall performance, which featured 11 of 17 passing for 74 yards was sort of just, eh! >> looked a lot more comfortable, i think, with every game he will feel more comfortable. i thought we had a chance for a couple big plays that we just missed. >> last week, he had some running experiences, but haven't had any overall bad performances for myself personally. but it's, you know, feels good to go out and play buffalo, play the bears, now get a chance to come home and play the colts. >> reporter: luck meanwhile, turned in his third straight

[ laughter ] >> come on, baby! >> rg-iii had a gray day today. first game, he was down there, he had a great game. >> a little too small, but in terms of beg a quarterback, he's real good. i don't think it's going to last. >> pleating passes, making the right reads. >> my feeling is he had a better game than andrew luck. >> he might be better than andrew luck. tonight i think he played better than him. we'll have to see. >> more on the redskins, coming up later tonight in sports. turning the page, first man to walk on the moon has died. neil armstrong was 82 years old. he underwent heart bypass surgery earlier this month. you might recall as commander of the apollo 11 mission, neil armstrong became the first human to set foot on the moon in july of 1969. as he stepped onto the dusty surface, armstrong said, quote,

that's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind. we have local reaction tonight to this american hero's passing. >> i want you to understand that neil armstrong died this afternoon, so this is a very important, very poignant part of our trip. >> reporter: visitors to the national air and space museum got the news as the world was hearing about it. the pioneer of space exploration, neil armstrong, dead at age 82. >> he's the first man to land on the moon. >> reporter: he has inspired generations of admirers who can only dream to one day experience what he did on that july day in 1969. he descended off the apollo command module, setting foot where no man had gone before and uttered the phrases that will forever be immortalized in history. >> one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind. >> reporter: armstrong's family is staying quiet about where he passed, but they do confirm he died from applications following

heart surgery earlier this month. he had been operated on just days before his 82nd birthday. >> it's a grave loss, but it was a wonderful thing that he did also. >> he's a true american hero. and lived such a modest life. >> reporter: although somber, the mood here quickly turned into a celebration of armstrong's life. from the apollo 11 command module display to the lunar module exhibits, scores of crowds packed to learn more about the man who put his footprint on the moon and in the history books. >> men like neil armstrong from a very young age were very much dedicated toward accomplishing great things on behalf of their country, on behalf of mankind. >> it's amazing how quickly armstrong's admirers from our area reacted to the news, within hours of the announcement of his death, began sending flowers, all of those things started to come to the museum. now the administrators here say they are looking for ways to use those flowers and have a makeshift memorial honoring the legendary astronaut. at the national air and space

museum, 9news. >> neil armstrong, also a college professor, he was a very private person. a reporter recalls he once asked him how he felt knowing his foot prints would likely stay on the moon surface for thousands of years. armstrong responded, i kind of hope that somebody goes up there one of these days and cleans them up. the warning's up in florida tonight for tropical storm isaac. the storm passed over cuba today. it's back over waters tonight, expected to strengthen to a hurricane before reaching the florida keys sometime tomorrow. in tampa, republican officials are canceling the first day of convention that had been set to beg on monday. danielle nottingham now. >> reporter: well, bruce, after days of saying the republican national convention would go on as scheduled, rnc officials made the call this evening to push those back, the start of the program. they say it was too big of a risk to go on as planned.

crews in tampa are still setting up for the republican national convention. but organizers say the threat of isaac is causing them to cancel all official business scheduled for monday, opening day. speeches and the nomination of mitt romney will now be squeezed into a three-day program beginning tuesday afternoon. delegates have already started arriving in the city. some say they just want to get to work. >> have my poncho, ready to get the job done. >> reporter: tampa is not expected to take a direct hit from isaac, but with an estimated 50,000 visitors coming here, officials say the priority is to keep everyone safe. florida is under a state of emergency, as isaac moves toward the florida keys. forecasters expect the storm to strengthen over the next few days and potentially become a category 2 hurricane and hit the florida panhandle early this week. >> we're focused on the storm surge, focused on the wind, and we're just focused on all the entire impact for the state.

>> reporter: isaac has already left a path of destruction. saturday, the storm flooded parts of haiti and tore apart tents people have been living in since the deadly 2010 earthquakes. in the dominican republic, houses collapsed and roofs ripped off homes. before moving toward florida, isaac brought 60 mile-per-hour winds and huge waves that caused damage and flooding in cuba. forecasters predict isaac will cross the florida keys sunday. rnc officials said they hope to have the new program available by tomorrow. live in tampa, florida, danielle nottingham, now back to you, bruce. >> danielle, thanks a lot. where is isaac right now? what's the latest track? let's go to anny hong in the weather center with the latest. >> isaac is still fairly disorganized. looking at the satellite picture of tropical storm isaac, you can see still really having a hard

time organizing, just north of cuba, expected to strengthen tomorrow as it approaches the open waters. and you can see the forecast models, a little more confluence, could maybe impact the gulf coast overt next few days and potentially strengthen into a category 2 hurricane. right now, still a tropical storm, but as it approaches florida, key west tomorrow, could become a category 1 hurricane as late as tomorrow night, early monday morning, then become a category 2 hurricane by monday afternoon. so we are still watching isaac. in our area, looking at scattered showers. you can see around the coast, delmarva, they are getting hammered, getting hammered all day. places east of us, warrenton, getting showers right now. we'll talk more about the unsettled weather in our area and also take a look at isaac a little later. first, bruce, back to you. >> anny, thanks a lot. 9news now is reacting to isaac by mobilizing our resources. scott broom is now headed to

flexibility in a vehicle like this one. bruce, back to you. >> scott action thanks a lot. be careful where you park that vehicle. very expensive. turning elsewhere, what happens to lance armstrong's cancer foundation following his announcement he'll no longer be fighting doping allegations? the u.s. antidoping agency has banned the athlete for life from professional cycling and wants armstrong stripped of his seven tour de france titles. >> reporter: we went to columbia, maryland where right now cyclists are pedaling at a livestrong event. half of the proceeds go to armstrong's nonprofit foundation that raises money for cancer research. cyclists we talked with say his legacy will live on stronger than ever. >> more than ready to ride. >> reporter: jim gleason has raised thousands of dollars for lance armstrong's livestrong cancer foundation.

gleason says the foundation is solid and won't stop him from raising more money. >> it's going to live forever. forever. that's lance's doing. all these little yellow bands that everybody has, he always tested clean and to my knowledge, and he's my hero. he's why i'm out here. [ applause ] >> reporter: stephen powell, a cancer survivor, is also out here for the people who couldn't be here. he says his focus is on saving lives. lance armstrong beat testicular cancer and started his livestrong foundation 15 years ago, raising half a billion dollars. he's used to uphill battles, beating cancer, but has given up the fight on doping allegations. >> i don't blame him for not fighting it. >> i think he did the right thing to walk away. >> we support lance and livestrong. >> reporter: the executive director of 24-hour booty realizes the people who believe the champion cyclist cheated may feel even strong better it this week. >> i think there's always people looking to take heroes down,
