the top of the hour. a massive earthquake that struck off the coast of el salvador. authorities say the magnitude 7.4 quake has triggered tsunami warnings for el salvador, costa rica, guatemala, honduras and mexico. so far there are no reports of daniels or injuries. back here at home it is back to school day for nearly 150,000 students in montgomery county. >> the 2012-2013 marks the largest school body in the school's history. >> good morning andrea and mike. 149,000 students in montgomery county. they will be reporting this morning to 202 different schools. now back to school time is

generally very significant for retailers. and i was seeing this morning that the national retail federation was reporting that only 8% of us have actually done that back to school shopping. of course retailers were really hoping for a much stronger yield than that. but it has not happened. they are hoping that kids maybe are waiting for, to see the current trends and maybe parents are waiting for those labor day sales. i was looking this morning online at a couple of studies that seemed appropriate for this back to school day. one is that there's merging research. this will come as no surprise that sleep deprivation hinders learning. another important study parents will want to here is that consistent study times are your most likely cause for success with home work, so up to get those kids on a good routine

weekend. a child and adult are waking up in the hospital after a car crash on middle brooke road in german town. both the driver and five-year-old child were taken to the hospital. we are told the child was seriously hurt in this. police have not determined what caused the crash at this point. tropical storm isaac took a glancing blow at the florida keys and is now headed into the gulf of mexico. >> forecasters say the storm is expected to get strong and make landfall as a category 2 hurricane. the hurricane warning has been issued for communities from the florida panhandle through louisiana. authorities in louisiana are not taking any chance and they have issued some evacuations in some of the state's low-lying areas. the city of new orleans is now on high alert. >> >> one of the things we have learned is be prepared. caution is always the better part of wisdom in these regards. >> now the storm makes landfall

good morning. welcome back to 9news now. 5:15 on this monday morning. new information about tropical storm isaac. >> i have to stress a couple of thing. it is not katrina. i know everybody said oh, it is on the anniversary of katrina. >> and katrina had been a category 5 storm, it had time in the gulf of mexico to build up the storm surge and push that ashore. this is a smaller storm. it won't have the massive wind field or the strength, the storm surge that katrina had. it is seven years later so you have a levee system and pump system which is far better than it was. >> hopefully. >> reporter: well it should be a lot better than it was. 20 years ago hurricane andrew hit southeast louisiana. i was working in new orleans. had a top wind gust of 50 miles

per hour, well this storm was about 6080 miles from us. unless you are really in the eye wall, that is where the majority of damage is going to be. i needed to make those points. needed to make those points. >> i believe you howard. >> reporter: this storm is causing problems, no question about it. and it is going to cause some problems, you can see the heavy rain this morning that continues to fall across parts, we are going to show you the looping, across parts of florida there. central and southern florida, there was some rain totals yesterday in the section to 12-inch category across parts of florida. but this is pulling away from key west and is moving right now west northwest as opposed to northwest. so it is taking aim more on southeast he were louisiana. 65 miles per hour winds. gusts to 75 and we'll watch the pressure. 990 mill bars. moving west northwest at

14 miles per hour. on this track expect it to be near the mouth of the mississippi river sometime looks like tomorrow afternoon, tomorrow evening as a cat agree 1 storm. 8590 miles per hour. this is a little bit weaker projection than what we were looking at. so that is good news as well. if it gets a little bit farther to the west it won't be god for these areas. it would. new orleans,. the mississippi gulf coast. that is really the highest winds. somebody is going to get hit but how do you hope to minimize the damage? you keep it weak, moving quickly, keep it away from the population centers. right now new orleans is a big threat and a big target for isaac over the next couple of days. around here the bus stop forecast, we are looking at mostly cloudy skies. patchy fog, even a shower can't

heavy rain is being blamed for a huge sinkhole in east baltimore. >> the sinkhole is on east monument street and it is so bad authorities forced several residents on the block to leave their homes just as a precaution. many residents live above store fronts on the block in precarious positions. a department of public works spokesman says right now it appears those buildings are stable but the city just didn't want to take any chances. >> the buildings are okay right now all right? we are hopeful that everything is going to be all right in terms of that. everything is pretty well stable on each side. but we are concerned enough we had to get people out. >> people got to live and eat on what we are doing here. with the street being cut off there is no foot traffic. it is pretty rough. >> a smaller version of the sinkhole was filled in just last week as repair crews began trying to fix the drainage pipe that caused that initial problem. later today workers will cover the sinkhole with metal plates

mike. a gorgeous morning out here. at walter johnson the first school bell of the year will ring officially at 7:20 this morning. we have to tell you as early as 5:00 a.m. teachers and school administrators started showing up here. among them school principal walter johnson, jennifer baker, thanks for being up this early and getting started. an exciting day for students and parents. what is it like for school administrators? and what are you expecting in the year ahead? >> i don't think there is anything more exciting than the first day of school. you prepare for it all summer we are so ready for the kids to be here and so very excited. we are looking forward to having everybody back and being back in the business of what we do, which is educating children. we spend a good long time this summer preparing and our teachers are ready. you have 2260 students here, the third largest school in the

it has been a violent 24 hours in afghanistan. first, government officials report taliban insurgents beheaded 17 civilians in a village in southern afghanistan. this happened as people were gathering for a fest value with music and dancing. an afghan soldier turn his weapon on international troops and killed two coalition force service members in eastern afghanistan. at this point that is all nato is saying about the incident. coalition and afghan officials are now investigating the shooting. well the delegates have arrived in tampa, florida for the republican national convention. but so has the wind and rain. >> susan mcginniss is live there. >> reporter: the party has started in tampa. thousands showed up sunday night for the republican national convention's welcoming party of the it was the first official event on the rnc's schedule. the second will be a little

good morning. they are taking out the crayola crayon box to determine the color of his shirt. let's get on to more adult subjects, the weather. >> reporter: isaac is still a tropical storm threatening southeast louisiana. your hometown andrea there as we get into tomorrow evening. >> school there is canceled. schools looking good here. >> reporter: isaac may actually hit on the anniversary of katrina. but this is no katrina by any measure. yes, it is a hurricane, but it is a weaker, smaller hurricane. katrina was at one point a category 5 in the gulf of mexico. that allowed it to build a tremendous storm surge and push it toward the coast. this is not going to have the same opportunity. you can see the center of

circulation pulling away from florida. want to show you the radar in a second. a heavy rain band sweeping across florida. all the moisture flowing into florida, we are looking at the center of what is now tropical storm isaac there in the gulf of mexico, pushing off toward the west northwest at 14. 65 gusting to 75. forecast track takes it just a little bit farther west than earlier but not by much. we are talking about this is the mouth of the mississippi river, plaqumines's parish here. the city of new orleans is going to be on the right side of this, the strong side of the storm, but also let's not forget this. when this water gets pushed off toward the north here on the east side of the storm, you have the water flowing in toward areas east of new orleans, especially the mississippi gulf

coast is going to take a beating from this, on this track. if this moves farther west, she will be spared. andrew came ashore here, i was working in louisiana. all we had is a 50 miles per hour wind gust. so it won't take much to get new orleans to be away from the worst of the storm. right now they could be seeing 80, 90 miles per hour winds tonight. we have mostly cloudy skies, patchy fog west, showers east, 60s and 70s this morning. sunrise 6:33. as we look at the day planner, expecting temperatures to climb into the low 80s by noon with a mix of sun and shrouds. maybe an early shower left over. by 5:87 degrees south winds at 10. showers and storms affecting areas mainly east of the bay. i want you to focus back into charles county, this is where we are seeing activity even st.
