5:00 pm
nearly 400 mile wide hurricane begins its slow crawl on to land. >> a category one at this strength from 85 to 100 mile an hour winds with 125 miles an hour of gust is plenty big enough to put a big hurt on you. >> the massive storm could bring up to 20 inches of rain and a 6 to 12-foot storm surge. >> the hurricane has a little bit of an opportunity to strengthen. i would focus more on the fact this is a large hurricane. >> tens of thousands have already evacuated from louisiana, mississippi, alabama, and florida. here in new orleans, there is no mandatory evacuation order. the city requires it to be a category 3 for that. in the french quarter, businesses are sandbagging and boarded up. the streets are nearly deserted. all around new orleans, flood walls are up. engineers closed this flood barrier to protect the 9th ward and the french quarter. the big easy is counting on the
5:01 pm
$14 billion newly rebuilt levee system. the family isn't waiting to find out if it all works. they suffer through hurricane katrina inside the super dome without food and water. >> might as well turn around. say your prayers and keep moving. >> the eye of the storm is expected to make land fall late tonight or early tomorrow morning on the anniversary of katrina. the mayor of new orleans is urging the residents who decided to stay to stay put from here on out, to stay indoors, to stay off the streets. as soon as the brunt of this hurricane has passed, his city will move immediately into search and rescue mode. i'm karen brown, back to you. >> we are hoping there's not much searching and rescuing to be done. though we don't know yet. topper shutt is here in the weather center. more rain event than a wind event. you have been saying that all along. where is isaac now? >> it is 105 miles southeast
5:02 pm
of new orleans. we have reports of bowie, essentially at the mouth of the mississippi. 83-mile per hour wind gusts sustained at 63. this is the satellite picture, a little better organized. it's still offshore and it's going to be tough to tell you when it makes land fall. it is over land, but half of it is also water. this is pretty well organized storm. still do not have a defined eye. tropical storm force winds extend out of the center, 180 miles. so, you know, even though we talk about the eye making land fall. here's the track. they still bring it on as a category one, which is good. late tonight, early tomorrow. take it right through louisiana. it's going to be a big water problem there. 10 inches of rain, 15 inches of rain possible. by thursday, it's on the border of louisiana and arkansas. begins to turn back to the north and the northeast northeast and this is a great track. that is something that is a
5:03 pm
silver lining from this storm. we'll come back and let you know if that track means anything for us over the holiday weekend. >> thank you, top. and with isaac now aiming toward the louisiana coast, the new and improved levee system will be tested for the first time. meteorologist, anny hong joins us live with what the army corps of engineers is saying about all that. anny. >> the u.s. corps of engineers finished building its levees just last september. dug deeper, built stronger, and stanged hire after katrina. engineers are confident it will be able to hold up against isaac and more. >> after katrina and more than $14 billion is this. a 133-mile system of levees and flood walls surrounded by 24 storm proofed pumping stations. >> we're in a universe different than we were prior to katrina. >> army corps of engineers helped oversee the destruction of the levee system. she deployed teams to the gulf
5:04 pm
coast so they can activate the protection system ahead of isaac. >> so you look at the heartbeat of the unified operations center. you can see there are monitors behind us. we are watching storms, because we are getting ready for isaac. >> she says it's designed to withstand a storm similar to hurricane katrina. forecasters are concerned with isaac's storm surge, which is expected to be 6 to 12 feet. still dangerous. >> it is pretty significant storm surge. even though the storm right now, which is a category 1 storm, which is forecasted to be that at land fall, it's a large system and because of its large size, it will have a significant impact. >> we have built these tremendous flood walls and surge barriers out in these water areas and we are in the process of closing them right now. some of them are already closed. we'll be closing them today and tomorrow. >> there won't be any flooding. there probably will be along with damage from heavy rains
5:05 pm
and high winds. but the goal is to minimize destruction and save lives. >> now the new pumping stations have 5700 horsepower engines that can pump 9 million- gallons of water per hour. what that means in simpler terms is those engines could fill up an olympic sized swimming pool. seven years after katrina, the army corps of engineers says new orleans is in much better shape to deal with isaac and bigger storms. let's hope they are right. lesli. >> meanwhile, lots of people from new orleans have fled to other cities in the gulf coast. scott broom is live from pensacola, florida, where some new orleans residents are taking an evacuation vacation. scott. >> reporter: yeah, it's hard to believe that people here think this is a refuge. we are starting to get bands
5:06 pm
coming through. but that's the dynamic of life on the gulf. if it's going to hit hard one place, you go to another place despite the nasty weather here. bands of heavy rain, a steady strong wind, and a surf produced minor flooding here, but no serious damage. at least one boat broke away, leaving this crew scrambling. >> it was very tough. >> between squalls, life guards are keeping careful watch on a 14 to 20 surf watching the pier. despite the tropical storm conditions pensacola beaches are refuge. >> we evacuate and we have big damage in our apartment and we decide to not do that again. >> schools in the two western counties are closed today and some hotels are closed as well. orders that many people here at
5:07 pm
pensacola beach simply ignored as isaac strikes a glancing blow. well, they called it a glancing blow here on the gulf coast, but the wind is blowing hard, there's been quite a bit of rain today and it's getting worse, but i guess it's better than new orleans. some of the people i spoke to from louisiana here said they decided to come in this direction towards florida. rather than going to texas because getting out of new orleans and going towards houston was such a hassle. one man reported five or six hour backup on the highway and it was hard to get gas going in that direction. a lot of people are coming here to florida, even though isaac is making his presence known. reporting live in pensacola, scott broom, 9news now. >> no easy way out and no fast way out. scott, thank you. president obama is urging gulf coast residents to heed the warnings as isaac approaches. >> we are dealing with a big storm and there could be significant flooding and other
5:08 pm
damage across a large area. now is not the time to temp fate. now is not the time to dismiss official warnings. you need to take this seously. >> president obama made those comments before leaving on a three state campaign trip. the white house says it is trying to balance leadership on the storm with the president's campaign plan. the storm is hanging over the republican convention in tampa as well. the city dodged the brunt of it, but the weather has been a big distraction. bruce leshan is live at the convention. u.s.a.today.com. that's cool, bruce, what are you going to have the networks won't? >> we're going to have more than the networks will. we'll be starting at 8:30 and go to the speeches at 9:00 and we're going to have analysis from washington bureau chief, susan page of u.s.a. today. so it's going to be really cool. then at 9:00, we're going to get all the speeches and networks will be sometime
5:09 pm
later. i'll tell you down here, hurricane paul has hit the hall. we had screaming and shouting from ron paul delegates here. take a listen. >> we have to proceed with the order of business. >> so they were complaining that they want ron paul a chance to speak. they did put his name in nomination here, but he is not being allowed to speak. some of his supporters are mad about that. but the big order of business put mitt romney in nomination, that came second. first by john of new hampshire. seconded by barbra constalk on virginia, and just as important as the roll call that is coming up, reintroducing mitt romney to the american people. they will depend on ann romney for that tonight. she is the headliner and she is
5:10 pm
a remarkable woman. a woman who has survived multiple sclerosis. she survived breast cancer as well. she humanizes mitt romney and is his ambassador to women in helping him deal with that gender gap. i had a chance to talk to governor nikki hailey of south carolina, does this convention need to humanize mitt and make him more likable? >> do you feel like you need to make him more of a real person? >> first of all, i know mitt and ann very well and i know he is a very likable person, but let's keep in mind, that's not what women are looking for. women care about jobs and the economy. women care about healthcare and how it's going to affect our family. women care about the debt being passed on to their children. those are the issues that mitt romney needs to talk about. >> and that's really the talking point here among a lot of the republicans. he doesn't have to be likable,
5:11 pm
they just have to convince the american people that he'll do a better job of managing the economy. anita. >> the economy is keep, bruce, we'll look for you tonight at 11:00 and on u.s.a.today.com. well, ahead of her speech tonight at the gop convention, mitt romney's wife is revealing new details about a miscarriage she suffered in her 40s. in an exclusive interview with scott pelley. ann romney was initially shocked and excited to having another child. then one night she realized she was losing that baby. >> it was about 3:00 or 4:00 in the morning and i decided i wasn't going to wake mitt up. i was going to be okay and i waited until 6:00 in the morning and said mitt, you have to take me to the hospital right now. and so we woke up our oldest son and get the younger brothers off to school and you know, we're going to the hospital. mom is losing this baby. >> coming up in a few minutes, we'll go back live to tampa to talk to bob ehrlich and his
5:12 pm
wife about the importance of tonight's speeches by ann romney and chris cristie. in the meantime, there is some big news and sad news out of redskins park tonight where the redskins released one of our favorite players, tight end, chris cooley. kristen berset is here with the shocking announcement in chris cooley's jersey. >> he was always a class act, a great guy. had always taken time to speak to the media and his rapport with fans made him one of the most popular during his eight seasons here. but with fred davis as the starting tight end and now paul's impressive preseason, there wasn't room for cooley anymore. and in a press conference at redskins park today, cooley, who was the longest tenured redskin said it will be difficult for him to put on another team's jersey. >> i loved every minute of playing here. it's been a good ride. it's been a pleasure.
5:13 pm
i guess for me, i'll take some time and decide what i want to do moving forward. i have every belief that i can play football. >> now the cut does give cooley a chance to start somewhere else, but you can see, he had such a great personality and such a nice overall person. >> ball is a business and they were going to pay him $6 million and that was more than they could do. >> we'll have more coming up at 6:00. >> let's get to breaking news right now from united airlines. the carrier is having a massive computer outage problem right now. passengers are going to find problems checking in at the airport and using the website and an official at dulles airport is warning you, you should be prepared to spend the night at the airport. you may want to make alternate plans. we'll bring you more information as soon as it
5:14 pm
becomes available. coming up, police release eillance video of a beating near the earn eastern market. >> we'll tell you if you might be able to turn off the ac for a couple nights.
5:15 pm
5:16 pm
it's finally in full swing. the other day, mitt romney kids were asked to describe his father in one word. we decided to repurpose and pose the same question on our wus isusa9 facebook page. charles simmons described him as a man who lived the american dream. nancy said, coolest about every day life, especially single moms and dads. nina wrote, fake and judith
5:17 pm
willingham said i'm reserving judgment until after he speaks at the convention. that's one of the purposes this week, to help voters connect with governor romney. they have two big hitters speaking tonight to help them do that. the governor's wife and new jersey governor will be speaking. here to talk more about the importance of all that, former maryland governor and first lady, bob and kendall ehrlich. chairs mitt romney's maryland campaign. good to have you both with us. >> pleasure to be back. >> i'll start with you. it is no secret there's a gender gap. women are less comfortable with mitt romney. is there anything ann romney can say tonight to change that? >> well, as we know, there is a gender gap with women concerning the democratic support and with men on the other side. it depends which way you look at it. clearly this gender gap has been a problem for republican presidential candidates and
5:18 pm
republican candidates down for years. ann romney is a terrific campaigner. kendall really likes her. we have been with her recently. we think she can go to ways to cure this. >> you know what? >> i think she's going to help define her husband, but she's going to help define that it's okay to be a woman in the republican party. as one for many years, i can attest to that. i have with me my favorite new bumper sticker. moms drive the economy. she exemplifies that and she also, women, and particularly moms, really understand the deficit and the deficit issues and they also understand that many of the college age kids can't get jobs or they are under employed. they want their kids to get on with their lives and be independent. i think this is the year the mom and that will help this gender gap as we go forward. >> this one bumper sticker combines both themes of the
5:19 pm
campaign. obviously women, tonight is really targeted to women voters and obviously the economy, which is the real bottom line. not only to this convention, but this campaign in 2012. >> talk a bit about chris cristie, the governor from new jersey. is he going to be the attack dog? a lot of people are expecting him to be. >> well, he's a good attack dog, that's for sure. now he is funny, too. he mixes humor with the points he makes. a terrific speech giver. so you will be entertained. the ratings will be high for chris cristie. >> it will be entertaining. >> thank you very much for chatting with us this afternoon. i'm sure we'll have you back and we'll be watching the convention closely. let's get outside to topper shutt and i believe anita is out there with him as well. >> humid here, but you have your eyes on isaac. >> we talk about land fall. that's when the eye crosses land. doesn't mean you aren't feeling the effect before and after. >> this is a big storm. >> let's start with isaac.
5:20 pm
we'll start with the track of the storm. a category one. winds are up to 80 miles per hour. that's a sustained wind and it does appear it's going to stay a category one as it makes land fall. right now it's 30 miles south, southwest of the mouth of the mississippi and 100 miles southeast of news , weather , new orleans. we are looking at winds of 80 miles per hour with gusts over the course of the next 12 to 18 hours. we get into thursday, at least in the afternoon. then it moves up into arkansas and weakens, becomes a depression eventually, extra tropical. but the good news, the silver lining, i cannot emphasize this enough is rain in parts of the midwest, where they have been dry and especially this summer. so again, land fall tonight. probably just to the southwest of new orleans. late tonight or very, very early in the morning on wednesday. radar. it's already pounding much of the florida panhandle. remember, scott broom was in
5:21 pm
pensacola. tropical storm force winds extend out from the center about 180 miles. we'll focus on this eye going across new orleans, but remember the winds will extend up to baluxy. winds are 39 to 74 miles per hour. live look outside. it is quiet here. and really turning nice. it's 89. look at the dew point. 56. dew points are in the 50s, you can turn off the ac and open the windows. pressure beginning to rise. so currently we're looking at 84 in vienna. 85 in bethesda. 89 in college park and 85 in springfield. next three days, we'll keep it green and green because we have spectacular tomorrow, 84. 88 on thursday. still very nice. not humid. 94 on friday. it will be hotter on friday, but still not crazy humid. we'll keep a day of code green. as we get into saturday, sunday, and labor day. yes, some of isaac will get in
5:22 pm
here. not so much on saturday. salvage a decent day on saturday. an isolated storm and a better chance for storms on sunday and consequently cooler. mid 80s. if i had to pick the wettest, i would pick monday, back up to 90 next tuesday. so again, isaac already at the coast and rain fall probably 5 to 15 inches and sometimes it's not the wind, it's the water. >> we should feel fortunate our weekend is going to be slightly rained on. >> yes, i agree. >> coming up on 9news, new information about the accused teenage shooter at a baltimore area high school. >> but up next, big tropical morning drivers on the bay bridge. we'll tell you what they did and didn't find on one of the spans.

5:31 pm
still no clear cut eye. it is a big storm though, in fact, we do have the track still a category one as it makes land fall. winds 80 miles per hour. gusts 85 or 90. it tracks in through louisiana, into arkansas, we're talking 5 to 15 inches of rain with this track and it begins to turn back to the north and east. that's good news. that will bring much needed rain fall to the midwest. we also talk about the wind. see this ring? these are where the tropical storm force winds are felt. even though the storm is to the south, you're getting tropical storm forced winds to the coast of mississippi as well as alabama. almost all the way to pensacola. we'll come back and talk about whether or not isaac will affect our weekend plans. >> thanks, top. new information tonight in the search for whoever is behind a brutal attack that left a capitol hill man in a coma. now his wife is asking for help after police released some new surveillance video. our ken molestina is live with the plea and those just
5:32 pm
released images. >> he remains in the intensive care unit, but now this new piece of evidence is being made public and that could help investigators catch whoever is responsible for the attack. >> i just wanted to ask the public to please watch this video. >> abby is talking about these images taken from her surveillance camera. police believe the car and the people in the video are responsible for the attack on 29-year-old thomas. his wife is now pleading for the public's help. >> people would take a minute to look at that, think about something they might have seen or somebody they know. >> the people are seen trying to use the victim's credit card at the exxon gas station on the 1200 block of pennsylvania. police say the suspect's beat him and left him on the porch of a house a few blocks away on north carolina avenue southeast. she had been trying to get home after a night out with friends a week and a half ago. >> spend ten days and he is slowly starting to respond. >> 29-year-old remains in the
