compound contradicts prior assault on osama bin laden's compound contradicts prior accounts of the raid. captioning funded by cbs this is the "cbs morning news" for wednesday, august 29, 2012. good morning everybody. good to be with you on this busy morning. i'm terrell brown. hurricane isaac pounding the louisiana coast right now. it's a category 1 hurricane with sustained winds of 80 miles an hour. the fierce winds have already knocked out power to more than 300,000 homes and businesses. a tornado reportedly touched down near mobile alabama knocking down trees and power lines and a tornado watch has been issued from louisiana to the florida panhandle. forecasters say the slow-moving storm could dump as much as 20 inches of rain in some areas. david bernard, meteorologist for our miami station, wfor, has the latest. >> isaac continues to move across south louisiana. very intense rain, storm surge and high winds causing lots of power outages across the new orleans area. the radar overnight indicates

that the rain is continuing not only in southeast louisiana, but also in mississippi and alabama. and the winds are going to blow a lot for the next 48 hours. in fact, the hurricane-force winds are going to be spreading across all of the new orleans area over the next few hours even into southern portions of mississippi and the tropical storm force wind, they are very wide in the yellow area. they extend well to the west and also well to the east of the storm. rainfall potential, that is great. we could be talking locally 15 inches or more in the new orleans area with widespread areas of seeing at least 5 to 10 inches of rain. that's over the next 48 hours as we go into thursday. i'm davi bernard for cbs news in miami. and new orleans appears to be ready for hurricane isaac. seven years to the day after katrina devastated that city. but with 80 miles per hour winds, isaac is nowhere near katrina's strength. bigad shaban is in new orleans

with more on this. bigad, good morning to you. >> reporter: terrell, right now really the eye of the storm will move just got west of us here. the storm is packing winds up to 80 miles per hour and soaking much of coastal louisiana. all of the drainage pumps in the city are on and working. but it's likely that isaac will still flood parts of new orleans. hurricane isaac brought heavy rain and pounding winds to coastal louisiana overnight. but so far, only minor damage. >> our biggest concern is the amount of rain we may be getting. it looks like it could be very, very heavy. >> in the heart of new orleans heeded warnings to stay home allowing police to patrol the streets. about 30 miles south of new orleans in a small town, canals are overflowing and strong winds knocked down trees. it's where commercial fisherman ricky is riding out the storm on

his boat. >> got to be in your blood, i guess. i always felt safer on a boat. high waters come and you go up with the water. >> all along the banks here, sandbags have been set up as well as tube levees filled with water to prevent the highrising bayou from seeping into neighborhoods nearby. the city of new orleans has a much more sophisticated line of defense. a $14.5 billion levee system build by the u.s. army corps of engineers. >> i feel pretty good about it. i'm not worried about it now. >> isaac, which spans nearly 200 miles from the center isn't just hitting louisiana. the storm is stirring up the surf in mississippi and soaking orange beach, alabama. >> if it would have come straight at us and got up to a two, we would have left for sure. >> the slow-moving hurricane could leave behind as much as a foot and a half of rain and a

dangerous storm surge. >> isaac is expected to likely bring much-needed rain to arkansas. but terrell, louisiana will have to continue taking the brunt of the storm. likely through thursday. >> bigad, there's a lot of confidence in that improved levee and pumping system that's out there right now. so much confidence that many residents have decided to stay put. what are they telling you this morning? >> reporter: you know, i think a lot of the residents took the initiative, i think, to leave on their own but many are listening to officials saying listen, this is a different levee system than what failed in this area and low-lying communities seven years ago. a makeover. the city officials are confident it will hold. >> we'll be watching it as well from here. bigad, thank you. tropical storm kirk is gathering strength in the atlantic. has sustained winds of 45 miles per hour and centered 1200 northeast of the northern leeward islands. right now it poses no threat to

land. a failed bid at the nomination in 2008. mitt romney will be the republican candidate for november. he was officially nominated last night. getting enough voters to choose him over president obama is key to winning the white house. a new cbs news poll shows that nearly one-third of voters don't have an opinion of him yet. to help with that, his wife tack the stage while new jersey governor chris christie dealt out the tough love. susan mcginnis is in tampa with more. good morning fou. >> terrell, good morning. ann romney, governor christie and other here on tuesday did their best to portray mitt romney as competent, experienced and human. mitt romney gave his wife a hug and a kiss after her speech at the republican national convention and the crowd roared. ann romney promised her husband will not fail and she spoke of her personal love story. >> a storybook marriage.

the state of wisconsin be nominated by acclimation. >> former secretary of state, condoleeza rice and new mexico governor suzanna martinez will also speak tonight during the televised portion of the convention. now, former candidate rick santorum also spoke last night. he talked a lot about protecting unborn children and he accused the obama administration of guting the work requirements for welfare. terrell? >> more convention ak to come. appreciate it. cbs news political director john dickerson is also at the convention and has more on the speeches from last night. >> it was a night of building up and knocking down at the republican convention. mitt romney's wife, ann romney, built him up talking about the man that she fell in love with so long ago when he picked her up for a date and how he could be trusted. she acted almost as an ambassador to middle class women making a very strong and direct appeal to women saying that she

understood what they went through in life. how they kept the household in their head, how they remembered the numbers of the emergency doctors, making an appeal to women saying that if i trust mitt romney they should too. then, chris christie came out. the governor of new jersey was there to knock them down and he made a very strong indictment against the democratic way of doing things. his argument was republicans have a better way. john dickerson, cbs news, tampa, florida. and cbs news will have continuing coverage of the republican national convention. we'll have live coverage of paul ryan's speech beginning at 10:00 p.m. eastern. president obama is hitting the campaign trail. today he'll be at the university of virginia trying to reenergize students who turned out in record numbers to vote for him in 2008. tuesday he visited iowa state and colorado state universities. of course the gop convention was on his mind. >> it should be a pretty entertaining show. it will be.

year sitting at 76. the high temperatures today will be in the low 80s on the bay. 86 manassas, fredricksburg and d.c. a quick look at isaac this morning. still with winds of 80 miles an hour. just skirting the louisiana coast west, northwest here. looks like it might be trying to come on shore. we'll have more on isaac coming up a little later. let's go to monika samtani with timesaver traffic. we're starting off with an unfortunate and bad situation on the northbound side of i-95 in virginia just after 2:00 this morning a tanker truck fired occurred northbound 95 right here at the fairfax county parkway. right now the lanes are open northbound 95 but you cannot access the fairfax county parkway. tons of equipment on the scene trying to deal with the situation. it was a deadly accident there. so keep that in mind for your travel plans. if you're planning to head into newington this morning, of course it will slow you down more than normal early on. we'll go further north on to 395.

that's fine on the northbound side from our vdot camera, northbound 395 looking good from edsall road up to duke street and the 14th street bridge. back over to our maps. i need to tell you about construction. there is some today. you can see the slow traffic through the tysons area a little here through annandale as well that should be cleared up within about 30 minutes. we'll take a live look at the american legion bridge west side of town. no issues between bethesda and the river. i'll be back with more details on the accident on 95 at 4:39. hurricane isaac came ashore last night as a category one storm. isaac had sustained winds of about 80 miles an hour when it reached land in plaquemines parish, louisiana. >> there is some good news. the levee system in new orleans holding just fine and city leaders do not expect another katrina-like event. this is a live look from new orleans. regional leaders do expect heavy flooding once the storm moves more inland because of the rain that's going to stick
