lower humidity levels, it's going to feel fantastic. had the front come through yesterday morning. remember we had the showers real early and a sunny afternoon. the front now well to the south and continuing to push through the carolinas. behind it, the air drying out, especially north and west of d.c. even in the mountains this morning some of the temperatures are in the 50s. martinsburg 59. oakland is 55. we're at 70 here in manassas -- we're at 75 here. in manassas 61. 68 across the bay in cambridge. looks like its going to be a beautiful afternoon. the high temperatures in the low to mid-80s. next time we talk coming up around 5:15 or so, of course i'll update you on the very latest on hurricane isaac. right now at 5:00 a.m., here's monika samtani with unfortunately not as good news about the traffic. it's really bad news actually on the northbound side of i-95 in fact. here's a live look northbound 95 in virginia. sorry, a video. if you're planning to head into newington, this is what it

looked like overnight after 2:00 this morning. a huge tanker fire ended in one fatality. it took four foam units to put this fire out. it was massive on the northbound side of i-95. right now the two right lanes are blocked and there's no access to the fairfax county parkway right now. so you'll want to choose your alternate routes. let's put up a graphic so i can tell you what you can do. northbound 95 i suggest lorton road east to telegraph road to the beltway or you can use route 1 to the beltway. remember, that loads up very quickly. if you need to get to newington west of i-95 it's lorton road to route 1 to route 638. we'll end with some good news on the north and southbound side of i-270. let's take a live look there from our mdot camera. no issues to report from father hurley boulevard to the point where the lanes divide. these guys are just resting. they're not causing any problems on the northbound side of 270. more traffic coming up at 5:10. back to you guys. >> thank you, monika. about 7:15 their time last night, hurricane isaac made landfall in louisiana as a

category 1 hurricane. >> since then the airports and the seaports have closed and now the concern is about the waters rising and how quickly they do that. we have more from jackson square in new orleans. >> reporter: just one day before the seventh annual versery of katrina -- anniversary of katrina, hurricane isaac has made landfall. isaac may get even stronger as it moves in according to forecasters and conditions could become more dangerous in the hours ahead. >> this is a slow moving storm so there are going to be many communities that will face several hours of heightened wind strength as well as heightened rainfall compared to normal. so that will result in localized flooding, will likely result in down tree limbs and power lines. >> reporter: hundreds of thousands are without power. >> we are beginning to see the impacts. we now have reports of down trees, heavy rain, strong winds. and power outages throughout the city. >> reporter: evacuations are in effect in isaac's -- and isaac's impact is being felt by many. >> at the present ti as

welcome back. good morning. it's 5:13 and 70 degrees. monika here with timesaver traffic. i have a lot to tell you. on the northbound side of i-95 just after 2:00 this morning, huge tanker fire endness one fatality on the northbound side of 95 right here at the fairfax county parkway in newington. right now the situation is this. you have two right lanes

blocked and no access to the parkway at all. it's going to be very tough not only northbound on 95 trying to get into newington but also trying to get in and around the area. you're looking at a live picture right now. with all this activity and equipment on the scene, you can tell it's going to be there for a while. so if you're just now heading out the door, south of this point you will want to plan your route accordingly. if we can go back to our graphics, i'll tell you what you can do to get around it. some alternate routes for you. northbound 95 it's lorton road eastbound to telegraph road to the beltway. or route 1 all the way up. newington lorton road to route 1 to route 638 will get you to the fort belvoir area. i'll keep you posted on this situation coming up once again in my next report. back to you guys. >> thank you, monika. it's 5:14. we're here with howard. howard is talking about isaac. the store shelves were bare with people going after food and bread and whatever. and liquor.

>> adult beverages. >> one of the stores that has a really good liquor department in their stores cleaned out every time they stocked it, cleaned out again. >> one of the staples for riding out a storm. we joke about it but it's serious business. this is a category one hurricane. made landfall along plaquemines parish last night. a second landfall this morning across areas south of new orleans. houma is a suburb maybe an hour or so west, north west of new orleans. the latest advisory at 5:00 has the storm centered -- it has a pretty big eye but it's centered about 35 miles east of houma. right over coastal areas. grand isle may still be on the eastern side of the eye right now. they were pretty quiet for the last several hours as the storm has been spinning slowly to the west, north west. the western side not looking as impressive as the eastern side. when you look at the radar,

you'll see we definitely have areas of moisture that are wrapping around. you see the wrapping around the storm even on the west side. these bands of rain, by the way, tremendous rainfall coming down. and occasionally tornadoes. had one overnight in mobile. caused some damage there. these feeder bands come in and they come around. this thing is very slowly moving off toward the west, northwest. you can just imagine the water being pushed up. a storm surge of 6 to 10 feet from the tidal gauges down there and rain is going to be tremendous here. 12, maybe 20 inches of rain in spots. you can imagine the flooding that's going to occur across areas of southeast louisiana, southern mississippi as well from n. here's the latest as of 5:00. still at 80. gusting to 100. but it's starting to come on shore. very swampy here so it's not going to weaken as quickly as other storms on shore will but it will be weakening. forecast by 1:00 to drop down to 75 mile an hour sustained winds. then maybe head even between

baton rouge and lafayette, louisiana as it moves up toward north central alexandria, maybe shreveport here as we get into late tonight, tomorrow morning as a tropical depression and what's left of it passing through st. louis as we get toward saturday ght, sunday morning. we may see some of the moisture from this around here as we get toward late sunday labor day. so we'll be watching that. today not much to tell you except it's really nice locally. at the bus stop this morning clear and pleasant. low 60s to low 70s. our sunrise at 7:35. looking at the day planner, we're expecting a gorgeous day. 81 by noon. 84 at 5:00 p.m. sunrise by the way happens at 6:35 but sets at about 7:42. temperatures down to 60 in lovettsville. it's 68 in sterling. andrews we've got 69. upper marlboro and laurel it's 65 along with college park and here in washington under clear to partly cloudy skies. temperatures 70. dew point 61. that's a lot less than

yesterday morning when it was up toward 70. so the humidity 73%. we've got some areas of dew, especially south and southeast of town where the moisture still. there are the showers and storms in the carolinas with the front that went through us yesterday. we're now north of that front. so the drier air has moved in. it's going to stick around for a couple of days. on the future cast no problems. maybe a shower in the mountains today. tonight it's going to be real nice. open the windows, enjoy. maybe a few spots in the upper 50s, most in the 60s. thursday sunny, still with the dry air but warmer, into the upper 80s. then friday, the dry air is going to start to inch out of here. a little more humid. but temperatures friday are going to shoot up into the mid- 90s. got to caution you now. friday is going to be quite hot considering where we've been the last few days. beautiful today, 85. tonight we're dipping down to about 68 in town. low 60s north and west. tomorrow warmer but still not too humid, 88. friday we've got temperatures in the mid-# 90s.

katrina. residents living all along the coast are braced for isaac. >> they have been bracing for a little while. the storm's heavy rain and huge waves expected had government agencies from florida all the way to texas on edge getting ready for the errorst. >> scott broom -- for the worst. >> scott broom joins us from pensacola, florida. what are the conditions? we can see the wind blowing but not blowing you over. >> reporter: i hope you'll like saltwater and sand in your coffee because when it rains here, you can taste the salt in the air and there's a lot of sand blowing around overnight here in pensacola. this is an entire region wide effect. here in pensacola, florida, we've had tropical storm conditions overnight and also had despite evacuation orders in this area, we have had lots of evacuees from new orleans showing up here. regional wide impact from a really big storm. isaac dealing florida's

panhandle a glancing blow [ inaudible ] the result has been some flooding and in this case a close call with a broken boat from its mooring monday afternoon. >> it was very rough. >> very dangerous. >> reporter: between squalls as isaac approached, lifeguards have been posted to keep people out of the raging surf. waves are running close to 20 feet overwashing the pier at casino beach, lulls in the weather drawing people out. then squalls roll in dumping heavy rain for a few minutes at a time making the storm surge flooding worst and this is what the hussein family from new orleans says is a lot better than home. >> we evacuate and we have big damage in our apartment. we decided not to do that again. >> reporter: overnight out of town power crews staged for trouble, including these trucks from st. mary's county, maryland, on the gulf coast to

help if needed. pretty unlikely they'll be needed here in pensacola despite the tropical storm conditions. i think most of the linemen and power crews i talked to who were down here from maryland and the mid-atlantic expect to be moved towards louisiana later on today. there really have not been any -- has not been any serious damage here besides that minor flooding but i showed you that surf. believe it or not, somebody tried to go jet skiing in that late monday afternoon off pensacola. that person is missing. the coast guard continues to look for him. if you can believe out there in those raging waves. when i come back, let's talk about something else here. how about the sea turtles at gulf island national seashore. they are a matter of some concern for people here as the waves are punching through the barrier islands. we'll talk about that when i come back. >> scott broom live in pensacola, florida. thank you. we'll talk to you in just a little bit. >> we have continuing coverage

the gulf. >> winds have gusted over 100 miles an hour at the bell chase naval air station on the southeast side of new orleans. the storm getting closer to houma, morgan city over the next couple of hours as it's just skirting the coast. you can see it there on our infrared satellite imagery. quite a few big dangerous thunderstorms wrapping around the center of circulation. the hurricane center still has winds sustained at 80 with gusts to a hundred on the 5:00 advisory. here's the radar presentation. you can certainly see this looks more sip metric than the satellite with these bands feeding around what looks to be an eye wall. as long as it's down here, very swatchy, it's not like it's making a solid landfall. there's still a lot of moisture available to feed this system to keep it strong and these feeder bands continue to bring in the threat for tornadoes as well as the heavy rains and winds. 80 mile per hour winds.

moving west, northwest only 8 miles an hour. forecast to move to the northwest, maybe west between baton rouge and lafayette as we get into the evening hours. it will be a very wet, slow moving day. the storm will move towards shreveport here as we get into thursday knight, friday morning -- night, friday morning into arkansas. by saturday what's left of it starts moving in toward central illinois, headed toward indianapolis and some of the moisture might make it here for the weekend. there's a lot of moisture with this. this is one computer projection of what we're looking at. from now going forward the next 48 hours. this white, grayish area, that's 10 to 15 inches plus what's already fallen. there will be 20-inch rain totals southern mississippi, southeast louisiana. you can imagine the river flooding. even around should port or monroe -- shreveport, monroe. they could get up to 8 to 10 inches of rage. incredible amounts of rain. we're covering isaac here and also our digital channels. we have all the latest for you on channel 9. 9.3 where we

good morning, everybody. about 2:12 this morning, crews in virginia got a call about a major tanker fire northbound 95 in newington at the fairfax county parkway. there was one fatality involved in this incident. so they're still there investigating. it's just south of this point in springfield. northbound 95, two right lanes are blocked at the scene at the fairfax county parkway. i'm going to step out and show what you it looks like live. loisdale road is closed as well. police diverting traffic around the area. let's go over to our graphics so i can show you your alternate routes that i figured out for you. northbound 95, lorton road eastbound to telegraph will take you to the beltway. route 1 will take you to the beltway and to newington it's lorton to route 1 to route 638 with delays. 66 on the other hand looks great out of manassas. a quick live picture of 270. overall just slow at 109 to 121. more traffic coming up in a few minutes. >> thanks, monika. some firefighters in china are being hailed as heroes after they rescued a 6-year-old

boy. the child crawled into a narrow space between the walls of two houses and he got stuck. his grandmother was busy inside and didn't notice he was missing till it was too late. so neighbors tried to get the child out. they couldn't do it. firefighters had to smash open a wall with some electric drills and hammers. it took them about 30 minutes but the little boy was freed. amazingly he only suffered bruises. you request see them drilling the walls right there -- you can see them drilling the walls right there. many parents are still trying to get their kids into the school routine. parents in parts of virginia still have a little time to get their kids in the mind seth for going back -- mind set for going back to school. we have help for all of you. i'm joined by stacy, the c.e.o. of moms center and -outer of the mom book. she's going to show us all how to manage the morning lift-off. this is not just good advice for moms. this is good advice for people who work on the morning shift. i told you we're getting ready in the dark. get us started. clothes. organization is key to this. >> mornings are so stressful

for parents and kids. we're trying to mobilize everyone, it's early. they always are forgetting things. they're sluggish. >> they don't want to get up. >> is your hearing impaired and you can't listen to us. i want to share some tips on how to get things moving, especially the first months. one is to prepack clothing. you can either followed them like you see here out of the laundry. kids, especially young kids can take forever deciding. if they decide what their favorite outfits are, it's grab and go. >> you've got it all right here. you also have the snacks to grab and go. >> there are so many times where you're packing lunch, you're trying to get kids' breakfast or snacks on the go. so having prepackaged things from grapes to carrots, kids can choose oreo gurt is a great thing to have in -- or yogurt is a great thing to have in the morning. this just came over from europe and they have add-ins. >> what distracts us in the

morning? we're distracted. the kids are distracted and that slows everything down. >> it does because we need to get everyone fed. then there's all the last- minute items. so the kids say oh, my sports bag. you look at the calendar. so you make sure they have their mouth guard and all the things in it and also i love last-minute items. i can't tell you how many times my kids said i can't go back upstairs to brush my teeth. >> you've taken the bad out of the excuses. >> right by the door. >> people are going to say i don't have room for this right by my door. i need to get out of the door. what's your best advice? >> i would have a lift-off area for both kids. could just be on the hallway floor. you can keep some of this stuff. >> just in case they forgot. >> again any other tips for keeping things going in the morning or in their rooms or whatever? >> i think it's great to have a big calendar that everyone in the family looks at. so it's right in the kitchen or in the hallway as you're
