>> this is the "cbs morning news" for friday august 31, 2012. that is going to be the talk of today. good morning everybody. good to be with you on a friday. i'm terrell brown. the balloons have fallen, the lights are out at the republican national convention. now the race is on. after years of trying, mitt romney finally accepted his party's nomination last night. he talked about his life, his religion, his business background, then went after president obama. his speech was overshad woed by a surreal performance by dirty harry himself. clint eastwood. susan mcginnis? >> absolutely at clint eastwood's speech and then there's mitt romney, who talking to folks here, he definitely delivered last night. he promised no new taxes on the middle class and 12 million new jobs. mitt romney got a standing ovation as he entered the convention hall for the biggest

speech of his life. >> i am proud to introduce to you the next president of the united states of america, mitt romney. >>nd romney wasted little time making his nomination official. >> i accept your nomination for president of the united states. >> he focused on his life, including an emotional nod to his parents. >> my mom and dad were true partners. a life lesson that shaped me by everyday example. when my mom ran for the senate, my dad was there for her every step of the way. >> he laid out why he should win in november. >> i have a plan to create 12 million new jobs. >> and why he thinks president obama should not win. >> you know there's something wrong with the kind of job he's done as president when the best feeling you had was the day you voted for him. >> mitt romney worked for six years to win his party's nomination and after several days of celebrating that achievement, now the real work begins. >> there's a lot of people out

tampa that he would be a better steward of the economy than obama. he knows he's not as likeable as president obama. he suffers from 'em path i gap. his message was look, obama is a good guy but he's not gotten the job done. he talked about his faith and fundamentally made the case that, hey, he might not be your best friend, but he's someone that you can trust to turn this economy around. it was not, i would say, the most thrilling speech that's ever been given to wrap up a convention. i think barack obama and george w. bush were more successful speakers, but it did get the job done. mitt romney got through it. he made his case and he should get a small bump from this convention. i'm brian montopoli from tampa. >> a court on thursday rejected a new texas voter i.d. law. the judges say the lawi requires voters to show photo identification at the polls discriminates against low income

blacks and hispanics. they'll appeal. >> in colorado, officials trying to cut down on voter fraud found only 16 people out of 4,000 are ineligible to vote. isaac is getting weaker but continues to produce heavy rains, spin off tornadoes and potentially damaging wind gusts. it's now a tropical depression moving slowly across arkansas and southern missouri. the massive storm is blamed for at least two deaths, flooding hundreds of homes and leaving about 9,000 customers without power. drew levinson has more. >> the brunt of isaac has passed but the damage is far from over. rising waters forced more evacuations from la place and reserve, louisiana, with people and animals hurrying to get out. joshua jones is one of the hundreds rescued. they're headed to shelters in shreveport. >> we had to like climb on top of the houses until the boats got us. >> the evacuees in shreveport were already exhausted and hungry. some didn't want to be there. >> they forced us. they dragged me out.

>> a bird's eye view shows the damage in hard hit plaquemines parish. homes are flooded to the second story and cows stranded on a small patch of land. >> the national guard along with the sheriff's department and other rescue workers are using this parking lot as a staging area. the reason they're here is because it's one of the few places that has electricity. >> hundreds of thousands of customers are without power across the state. few gas stations are open. and the ones that are have long lines. some people stocked up filling extra containers. a mandatory evacuation order was issued where it swelled banks. >> it's crazy. we moved here after katrina. we're praying that everything will be fine. >> crews are pumping water out of the lake to take pressure off the dam. >> we've got pumps in place here. they're not moving a large volume of water. we're trying to get as much as out as we can. >> isaac is bringing heavy rain into the midwest by the weekend.

it could be a couple of weeks before power is restored to everyone here in louisiana. drew levinson, cbs news, la place, louisiana. from storms to fire, at least nine large wildfires are burning in montana. a fire near roscoe has burned about 1800 acres. it's about 50% contained. 20 homes were ordered to evacuate. officials say the fire started tuesday. high temperatures and high winds are making it difficult for firefighters to battle the flames. and the pentagon is threatening legal action against a former navy seal who wrote a book on the raid that killed osama bin laden. it's called no easy day and set to be released on tuesday. they're saying he violated two nondisclosure agreements. the department of defense says it's considering all legal remedies, which could include prosecuting owen or taking all the royalties raised by the book. coming up on the morning news, go ahead, make his day. clint eastwood grabs the spotlight at the republican national convention wi his off the cuff speech.

defense attorneys for james holmes, the accused gunman in the colorado shooting rampage made a surprise announcement. during a court hearing thursday, they said holmes tried unsuccessfully to cl his psychiatrist just nine minutes before the attack. holmes attended that court hearing yesterday. here's john block stone. >> when the package from holmes to dr. fenton was discovered in the university mail room, investigators sent in the bomb squad, fearing it contained explosives. instead, investigators reportedly found a notebook with crude drawings that seemed to suggest planning for a mass murder. while much about holmes remains a mystery, documents from the university of iowa released today give some insight. in his 2010 application to graduate school at the university, holmes wrote, he had a strong desire to explore the unknown. he wrote about working at a camp where children with

schizophrenia were heavily medicated saying this did not solve their problems, only create new ones. in response to holmes application, one university official advised do not offer admission under any circumstances. at this time in court james holmes seemed slightly more engaged, talking briefly a couple of times to his defense attorneys. but he still often had that strange wide-eyed look as he peered around the courtroom. i did not see him look directly at the psychiatrist who once treated him at the university of colorado. john blackstone, cbs news, centennial, colorado.
