the northbound side of 95 as soon as i'm off this report. southbound 270, no problems to report right now out of frederick. it's nice and light into clarksburg. you'll be fine down into rockville. let's take a live look outside and show you what it looks like if you're planning to head on the bay bridge. no problems to report here. things are good. coming off the bridge span nice and light. all lanes are open on route 50 right now. you're going to be fine out of annapolis as well. we'll go back over to our maps and this time let's head to the other side of town. no problems on the beltway itself. always you travel through cheverly into the northeast corridor, we're looking good and let's take a look at our mdot camera right now taking a live look if you're ranking to head over on -- planning to head over on the beltway. the beltway is fine and the bay bridge no issues to report as well. i'll be back in a few minutes with more traffic at 5:10. >> thanks, monika. see you then. five firefighters are recovering from burns and exhaustion after battling a late night apartment fire in the temple hills section of prince george's county. it happened at an apartment

complex on huntly square drive and a number of residents had to be rescued from the flames. kristin fisher is live at the complex. she has more on where they are this morning. good morning, kristin. >> reporter: good morning. first and foremost the good news is all five of those firefighters that were taken to the hospital are expected to make full recovery. they're expected to be just fine. four were taken for very minor burns. another was taken for heat exhaustion but good news there, they're going to be all right. the four people trapped inside this apartment complex are also expected to be just final. great news there. you can see clearly the fire has been out for several hours now. no more firefighters on the scene. right now we have a team of fire restoration specialists. you can see one of them walking out of this apartment complex now. but this is where the fire really started. if you look just down those stairs beyond that light, that is the apartment where this fire started. and it started right around

10:00 last night. inside four people were trapped. it's unclear exactly where those people were. some were in the bottom apartment, the terrace apartment. others were up on the first floor, the floor right above that. when firefighters arrived on the scene, they were expecting -- you never know what you're going to get when you arrive on the scene of a fire, but they thought that they would be able to go inside that terrace level apartment and begin getting the people trapped inside. instead they were met with a great big fireball. listen to how the fire chief describes it. >> they literally arrived, found what they termed as a working fire, standard procedure. went down the steps which is standard. opened the door, standard. as soon as they opened that door, it flashed on them. >> when that flash took place, what it did is it caused a fire to shoot up. it shot up so high that it

actually burned the seat of the woman that was in the amount right above where -- the seat of the woman that was in the apartment right above where the fire started. it caused four firefighters to go to the hospital and a fifth firefighter, that is when he realized he needed to take some additional action. a woman inside was trapped and he had to actually go in, stay with her and he couldn't leave. he knew she wasn't going to be able to get out without his help so he shared his air supply with her while they waited for them to be rescued, an unbelievable story. the fire chief calling that firefighter a hero this morning. we'll have more on what he did, how he saved her, what the fire chief is saying about him coming up in half an hour at a:30. back to you-- >> at 5:30. back to you. >> well done. thanks, kristin. nice to see everyone is safe and sound. mitt romney made his most important speech of the presidential campaign so far. he accepted the republican nomination and he tried to

the s&p 500 was off 11 points. well, investors are anxious to hear what the fed reserve chair ben bernanke is going to say about the economy. he's going to give his annual speech on monetary policy today at a conference in wyoming. investors will be looking for signs that the fed could take action with possible -- with -- [indiscernible] days after a major win in california, apple has lost a lawsuit it was filing against samsung in japan. a tokyo court ruled that samsung did not infringe on an apple patent. the court said the technology used in the south korean company's smartphones and the tablets to synchronize with computers did not infringe on an apple patent. last week, however, a jury in california ruled that some of samsung's smartphones did violate apple patent. that jury awarded apple a billion dollars in damages. it is just about 5:0 #. still ahead -- 5:08.

irchlts d. laws -- i.d. laws. james holmes, the man accused of opening fire on a movie theater tried to call unsuccessfully a psychiatrist just nine minutes before the attack. he played an after hours call to lynn fenton. she had seen him on one other occasion. prosecutors want to see a notebook now sent to her by holmes which reportedly contains violent descriptions of an upcoming attack. holmes is accused of killing 12 people and injuring 58 during a midnight showing of the latest batman movie last month. how about this if a gift? billionaire warren buffett is celebrating his 82nd birthday by giving each of his three children $600 million of his company's stock. the money, though, is for their charitable foundations which he's pretty impressed with apparently. one of his children helps farmers. another is a focus on violence against women and child

south overnight. that's allowed the moisture to come back in spots especially d.c. south and east. frederick, culpeper, warrenton visibilities half to a quarter mile. otherwise the heat is probably what's going to slow you down as we get into the afternoon. looking at our bus stop forecast, it's mainly clear but we do again have the patches of fog with temperatures in the 60s and 70s. sun is not up for a good hour 25 still. about 6:40 this morning. we'll watch out for those areas of fog for the next couple of hours. we'll see temperatures warm very quickly today. by 11:00 85. winds west. they'll increase some 10 to 15 this afternoon. by 1:00 already 91. keep in mind average high is 85, 86 for the end of august. by 3:00 94. i think 95, maybe 96 is attainable. unfortunately this afternoon. as we head toward dinner time, drive home, 95 degrees at 5:00. so if you have plans outside today, they're doable.

especially west of town, 86. and labor day looks even more unsettled with showers and storms. highs in the low 80s and remaining a little bit unsettled into the middle of next week. it is 5:16. here comes monika samtani. garrisonville, aquia harbor hot spots. that's the hot spot. you'll see a lot of red. yes, we have an accident on the northbound side of i-95. i was on the phone with virginia state police. they tell me it's a single- vehicle accident on the northbound side of i-95 in aquia harbor just north of that point as you head here, overturned vehicle blocks the two right lanes. look at all the slow traffic. i think it's all those people who thought they would get an early start to work and head out early for the labor day weekend. in virginia they're just waiting on a wrecker to clear it up. hopefully that will be done shortly. a little further north on the northbound side of 395, all lanes are open. no problems up toward the 14th street bridge and into the downtown area. your potomac and anacostia

river crossings are incident free. back over to the maps, this time over to 66 on the inbound side. we're looking good from manassas to centreville. no issues to report on the beltway and a last live look. this time we'll go to the bay bridge. a lot of you are planning to head out to the beaches for the weekend. good idea right now to head out. i'll have pore on traffic coming up -- more on traffic coming up in a few minutes at 5:26. speaking of the beaches, the labor day holiday weekend is the last getaway of the summer. it's traditionally always been a weekend of crowded roads and this year is no exception. joining me right now is lon anderson from aaa mid-atlantic with a preview of would you should expect as you hit the roads. good morning, lon. how are you? >> reporter: i'm doing great. how about you? >> this is expected to be the fourth worst labor day traffic in the region. that's huge. what should people expect in our area and where is going to be the best and worst times to travel? >> reporter: well, they should

expect a whole lot of traffic because we're projecting about 800,000 people leaving town. 700,000 of them are going to be on the roads. >> lon, this is a time -- >>-- >> no matter how you're going today -- by rail, air, train, whatever, you're going to have a lot of people with you. >> lon, the fact that this is a time of soaring gas prices, that's not going to deter people. you're saying 800,000 people leaving the area today? >> yeah. we don't think gas prices are going to hold people back, but the fact is gas is very expensive right now. it's $3.79 compared to a couple months ago. right now, of course, we're seeing some of the isaac effect because of all of the pumps that had to be shut down in the

75 at the patuxent river naval air station. still lower 60s and even upper 50s in western maryland and the shenandoah valley. as far as our weather, nice and clear overhead. that's allowed us to cool off and that's why we're getting some of that fog with highs going well up into the 90s. let's check in with monika samtani with an update on tame saver traffic. it's hard to believe with the volumes being so light that we have this issue on the northbound side of i-95. it's an overturned vehicle. i was just on the phone with virginia state police and they tell me that they were waiting on the wrecker. the right lane is blocked on the northbound side just north of ie ie -- of ie kwai ya harbor. a lot of people wanted to head off to work early and get out of town. once beyond that, all green up into springfield. in fact, we'll take a live look on the northbound side of i-95 and 395. looking good here. again just a tiny bit of volume in springfield. better than normal i would say headed for the 14th street

bridge. let's go back out to the maps and this time we'll head over to the north side of town and the beltway. no construction, no delays college park into bethesda. looking good on 270 out of frederick. one last live look one more time outside. tb 270 no issues at father hurley. i'll be back witmore traffic coming up in a few minutes. >> see you then, monika. thanks. fire investigators are trying to find out the cause of an apartment fire in temple hills, maryland which injured five firefighters. the whole thing started last night at a complex on huntly square drive. kristin fisher joins us live now from the scene where they are going through the apartment where it started. good morning, kristin. >> reporter: that the' right. good morning. the -- that's right. good morning. the fire has been out for a few hours but you can still smell the smoke out here. the fire started in this apartment where these fire restoration crews are heading right now. just down those stairs. the location of where this fire started is very important because it's a big part of why these firefighters ended up getting injured. when they opened the door just

after 10:00 p.m., it caused the fire to flash, burning four firefighters, even burning the feet of the woman in the apartment upstairs. that led firefighters to call for a second alarm. they needed reinforcements. but time was running out. that's when a ten-year veteran of the department heard a woman screaming inside. she was trapped but that didn't stop him from going in after her. >> the firefighter had exhaustion. a ten-year firefighter that went to where a citizen was screaming. he found her in a position where she couldn't get out. he came in with a bottle on. he literally sat with her in the apartment sharing his air mask waiting for someone to come rescue them because there was no way he was going to get her through the fire on her way out. so he got to the point where he was getting low on air and they were able to come in and g.t.e. both of them -- and get both of them pulled out. >> reporter: sharing his air marv, running out of -- mask, running out of air, getting

rescued just at the last minute. the fire chief is calling that firefighter a hero. he credits him with saving the woman's life. that firefighter was taken to the hospital for heat exhaustion but he is doing much better this morning as are the four other firefighters that were burned, mostly second degree burns. all of the firefighters here are expected to make a full recovery. same for the four people inside that were rescued and taken out. good news here by and large. just an incredible story of heroism from that prince george's county firefighter. as for the cause, as you said, mike, that's still under investigation. >> thanks, kristin. chris continue's live in temple hills, maryland this morning. mitt romney is now officially his party's presidential nominee. romney wrapped up the republican national convention thursday night and he tried to reintroduce himself to the american people talking about his younger days and his business experience and he vigorously defended his record

at bane capital. he offered sharp criticisms of the president's policies as well. now the focus will shift to charlotte, north carolina where the democratic convention kicks off next week. in other news this morning, george huguely, the former university of virginia lacrosse player convicted of murdering his ex-girlfriend will speppedz at least the next two -- spend at least the next two decades in jail. he was sentenced to 23 years in prison yesterday for the murder of yeardley love. after hearing of the verdict and the sentence, defense attorneys vowed to appeal both the sentence and the conviction. it is time for your money segment this morning. jessica is off but we still have the headlines now this morning. maryland is reporting better than expected revenues. the state ended the fiscal year 2012 with $230 million more than it anticipated. it's mostly from income taxes, sales tax and lottery receipts

here's the day planner. we'll warm up very fast. 88 by noon. 94 at 3:00. high today about 95 or so. i think that happens about 4:00, 4:30. by 6:00 still really warm with temps in the low 90s. the moisture has come back. the humidity, the muggies. you can see it here. this area in yellow this is 70- plus dew points, kind of tropical feeling. where you have more 50s north and west so it still feels somewhat comfortable here. where the dew points are lower, the air is just drier and cools off more at night. we're in the 50s in pennsylvania and western maryland. we have 60s, and low 70s locally in spots. in loudoun county, lovettsville is 60. we're already in the mid-70s. 76 in annapolis so big differences across the board. fairfax is 70. it's 69 bethesda. bowie 68 this morning with 72 in upper marlboro. outside on our michael & son weather camera, still dark. about an hour or so. not quite till sunrise. 74 degrees at national with the humidity at 87 ps.

day, especially west of town again on sunday, 86. monday, labor day, we're looking at low 80s with some thunderstorms at times. 5:48. here comes monika samtani. she's got a lot of papers. if you're planning to head northbound on i-95, i want to tell but this accident because you're expecting things to be much lighter than normal and overall they are early this morning with the exception of right here on the northbound side of 95 north of aquia harbor. it's an over turned vehicle. now everything has been pushed off to the right shoulder so your lanes are open but it was there quite a long time and that's why you're seeing all this red. beyond that you can see all the green headed up to woodbridge and spring field. i'll step out and show what you it looks like live on the northbound side of i-95 and 395 where beyond that, this is what you have to deal with. lanes are open and no issues up to 395. all of your potomac and anacostia river crossings are absolutely fine. so good time to head out to work right now. if you're planning to head elsewhere, especially to the beach, here's what it looks like on route 50 on a map.

no problems to report headed out to the bay bridge right now. things are looking good. all lanes are open past annapolis toward sandy point and the bay bridge. and a good time again with no delays. i'll be back with more traffic coming up at 6:01. but first, this labor day weekend is expected to be one of the most heavily traveled holiday weekends this year. the washington region is bracing for what some say will be the fourth worst labor day traffic in the country. we're joined by lon anderson from aaa mid-atlantic for a preview of what you can expect when you plan to hit the road today. what are going to be the best and worst times to travel, lon? >> i think right now would be a great time. as you said, traffic is much lighter right now but it's going to be very heavy later today. no question about it. we're projecting about 700,000 motor is on the road. so no matter how you're going, if you're flying, we're

projecting air is going to be up as well. 800,000 washingtonians will be traveling this weekend. >> all this despite gas pries being higher this weekend, right, lon? >> gas prices are certainly up. they're about $3.79 a gallon right now. and of course we've seen them go up by 10 criminals in the last two -- 10 cents in the last two days because of the isaac effect and the fact they had to shut down the refineries in the gulf. hopefully that will be a short- term problem. >> lon, i've been talking to you for years about the heavy traffic during holiday weekends. what safety tips are you suggesting for this particular one? >> well, as we've discussed, traffic is going to be very heavy. if you want to avoid that, either leave early or leave late. there's no question later this

afternoon it's going to be very crowded. similarly on monday afternoon coming back, the return traffic will be very busy. if you don't want to be caught in that very heavy traffic, leave early, leave late, or else you're going to have an awful lot of traffic to contend with. >> probably a good idea to have your route preplanned and have a gps handy as women. thank so you much -- as well. thank you so much, lon anderson from aaa. here are some of the other stories making news at 5:52 this morning. researchers at nyu say they have identified a way to slow the effects of als also known as lou gehrig's disease. the debilitating condition attacks the nerve cells of the brain and the spinal cord. researchers found when they tripled a specific protein in mice, the nerve cells stayed attached to the muscle longer. scientists say this could give als patients more mobility. but the study did not show that the mice lived any longer. on average als patients die within three years of diagnosis
