stanley. she was shot to death in her bed. several people home at the time got out unharmed. >> we've expanded the crime scene. we are searching the day of the -- the day of the murder we searched trash cans, storm draings. we're searching more of those. we're search be the wooded area over here. we have information that suggests that the suspect in this case left on foot, down chartsey in this direction. that is why we've expanded the crime scene search. >> police say they are using every resource they have in this case. a $25,000 reward is also being offered for information leading to stanley's killer. her memorial service is being held today. we'll have additional details regarding those services on our evening newscasts. crews are now working to repair a large water main break in arlington county. the pipe ruptured at 12th and south clark street in crystal city. you can see it right there. several homes in the area are

now without water. there are road closures associated with this. as of now, crews say they still don't know an estimated time on when they'll have the water main break repaired. a prince george's county firefighter is being hailed a hero for rushing into a burning apartment building last night and sharing his oxygen supply with a resident who was trapped in the flames. the fire broke out around 10:00 p.m. at the huntly square condominums in temple hills, maryland. five firefighters and one civilian were taken to the the hospital with minor injuries and smoke inhalation. the prince george's county fire chief says this could have been a lot worse had it not been for that brave firefighter. >> he literally sat with her in the apartment sharing his air mask, waiting for someone to come rescue them because there was no way he was going to get her through the fire on her way out. so he got to the point where he was getting low on air and they were able to come in and get both of them pulled out. >> all six people who were taken to the hospital have since been released. they're expected to be okay.

the cause of the fire is still under investigation at this hour. now to campaign 2012. mitt romney has pulled out of a scheduled rally in richmond this afternoon. instead, he's going to visit the hurricane damage in the gulf coast. romney wrapped up the republican national convention last night accepting the party's nomination. as the pundits analyzed his speech, they're also scratching their heads about clint eastwood's performance on stage last night. randall pinkston has more from tampa. >> thank you for being here. >> reporter: mitt romney is already back on the campaign trail. with running mate paul ryan, the republican presidential nominee greeted the crowd at a rally in lakeland, florida. >> we love this country and we're taking it back. thank so you much. i accept your nomination for president of the united states. >> reporter: romney accepted the g.o.p. nomination last night in tampa vowing to lead the country into better times. his speech followed a surprise appearance by the actor clint

eastwood. >> you thought the war in afghanistan was okay. >> reporter: eastwood spoke to annual empty chair addressing an invisible president obama. the obama-biden campaign answered with a tweet of the president's chair saying, "this seat's taken." eastwood's speech ran longer than expected and cut into romney's prime time coverage. today they're facing questions whether the actor's appearance distracted from the nominee's time in the spotlight. >> we appreciated clinton's support of course but it's so hard to really get a sense of who this person is in such a short -- in such a short amount of time. >> reporter: with the convention behind him and only 67 days until the election, romney's campaign shifts into high gear. after florida the nominee heads to louisiana where he will tour the damage from hurricane isaac. president obama is also on the road in texas meeting with troops at fort bliss. next week the democrats open their convention in charlotte. randall pinkston, cbs news,

tampa, florida. >> the white house says president obama will travel to new orleans to visit the flood damage next week. other news now, three people are dead, including the gunmen following an early morning shooting at a new jersey shopping center. this all happened around 4:00 this morning while employees were stocking shelves inside the pathmark supermarket in old bridge, new jersey. police believe the gunman took his own life after killing two people in the store. he was armed with an ak-47 assault rifle and an automatic pistol. reports say the shooter was an ex-marine who had been working at the store for about two weeks. lawyers for george huguely are promising not only to appeal his sentence but his conviction as well. a judge in charlottesville ordered huguely to spend 23 years in prison for the beating death of his ex-girlfriend yeardley love in 2010. with good behavior he could be out of prison in 18 years. the huguely defense team maintains that love's death was

an accident. vacationers are heading to the beach for one last taste of summer. this is a live look at the toll plaza to get over the chesapeake bay bridge. you know how that can jam up with traffic. it's expected to be a lot heavier with cars by the later part of today. travelers headed to ocean city, maryland will find labor day weekend arts and crafts festival in the resort town so you can enjoy that as long as you can get there. the holiday weekend is the last getaway of the summer. there are always lots of crowds on the road. monika samtani tells us in fact we are facing the fourth worst labor day traffic mess in the country. >> reporter: oh, the frustration. here in washington we are no strangers to bad labor day traffic. the hours spent in delays, screaming kids and bad drivers. and if you're hitting the road today for the long weekend, you'll have a lot more company. >> we're projecting about 800,000 people leaving town. 700,000 of them are going to be

vascular -- cardiovascular procedures are what culled the 82-year-old. a public -- killed the 82-year- old. a pub mick memorial is -- public memorial is expected within the next two weeks. diana and her partner were killed in a crash in paris in a tunnel while the drive of their limo was trying to' lewd paparazzi photographers. it happened 15 years ago. a small crowd is gathering at a makeshift memorial at the crash site to pay their respects to diana, the princess of wales. the pentagon is now considering legal action against that former navy seal who's written a book about the raid on osama bin laden and the night he died. the book called "no easy day" is causing a lot of controversy since it was announced. the author describes in detail the event of the raid that killed the terrorist leader. a lawyer for the pentagon says as a result, that navy seal violated an agreement he signed in 2007 not to divulge military secrets. the book hits store shelves

september 4. and scott pelley sat down with that navy seal. you can see the full interview on 60 minutes here on channel 9. flash flood warnings have been issued in arkansas as the storm moves north. it will be days before people can go back home. >> rerter: roads, homes and businesses in plaquemines parish are still under more than 5 feet of flood water. it's now receding because a nearby levee was intentionally breached and debris is starting to wash up. cattle and livestock headed to higher ground in this rural area and the death toll from isaac grew after the bodies of a couple were found inside a flooded home. about 40 miles north, one family had to fit what valuables they could into garbage bags after water began rising inside their home in slidell. >> a lot of devastation from a hurricane that was a category one. it started out as a small

tropical storm. it really turned into a lot of major destruction. really sad, very sad. >> reporter: isaac's storm surge pushed the waters of lake pontchartrain into canals near this neighborhood. those water ways usually drain into the lake so with nowhere to go, the canal swelled and flooded this neighborhood. larry waded through about a mile of water to check on his family's electronics business in rain that just wouldn't let up. >> this is as far as i got. >> reporter: where do you go? >> you keep going. >> reporter: today there was nowhere to go if drivers in line at this gas station. the wait stretched for at least a mile. it will be days before many people in this area will be allowed to return home to begin cleaning up. bigad shaban, cbs news, slidell, louisiana. >> utility officials say it will be at least two days before power is fully restored in louisiana. so far isaac has claimed four lives, three in louisiana and

well, hello. thanks for sticking with us. open wide. if your gums are puffy, gum disease might for the be your only problem. in fact, it could mean something much more serious is on the way. we have a docktory here to -- doctor here to explain. you look in the mile an hour or. oh, know, it's puffy. >> when there's too much plaque, your body will send blood there to fight off the infection. healthy gums won't bleed. there's not enough blood supply. if they're bleeding, that means there's an infection. your body will try to get rid of the tooth as the infection. what it will do is -- you'll end up with bone loss and that's why people end up losing their teeth. what ends up happening, it's an open window into your whole system. bacteria can go and travel all around your body, create all sorts of other problems. >> i was floord when i started doing the research for this

interview and sat down and saw how many americans have some level of gum disease. >> 80%. >> 80%. >> some are more serious than others. >> yes, of course. there's different levels of gum disease. you can go from gingivitis to level four peridonitis. >> what if it's gum disease or gingivitis? is there discoloration? >> red, puffy. unhealthy gums will be puffier. you can tell. if you're brushing or flossing and your gums are bleeding, they're not healthy. you have this go to your dentist and find out what's going on. >> this could lead to serious disease? >> it's been linked to premature babies, stroke, alzheimer's, increased risk of lots of forms of cancer. so it's really important to keep your gums healthy. >> so we don't scare people to death here, what are the good things to do as far as preventive measures are concerned? obviously brushing we talk about. >> floss every single day.

if you do still have bleeding gums, it's a good idea to go to your dentist to see if maybe there's tartar buildup they still need to be removed. somebody you get somebody with a systemic disease where it's showing up in their mouth. they're doing everything they can but there's something else going on and that's where it shows up. >> do you get to a point where antibiotics make a difference? >> we have tests to see what strain of bacteria they have. it can also pass through sharing food, kissing. families a lot of times, different people in the family will have the same strain of bacteria because of that. >> great to see you again. howard bernstein is standing by to give us the forecast. i've got to tell you, it's going to be a really hot day today. beach will be cooler. over the weekend not terrible. not the greatest weekend but it's going to be all right. in fact tomorrow, we're looking at temperatures in the mid-80s. i figured those folks have already sailed to the east so i'm not giving today's forecast. sunday and monday more clouds. isolated -- isolated chances for thunderstorms. highs in the lower 80s.

so that's looking all right. around here today, boy, it is a hot one. we've got temperatures which will be going into the 90s as we get through the afternoon. in fact, we've already jumped into the 90s. looking for a high of 95, 96. i think that happens about 4:00 p.m. if you're going to be going out this evening, the nats have a game with the cardinals. they'll see their high temperature or game time temperature 7:00, right about 90 for the first pitch. so a warm night out at nats park. 88 winchester, martinsburg. manassas 82. fredricksburg is 91. 89 in annapolis. check us out here at reagan national. up to 93. outside on our michael & son weather camera, lots of sunshine out there. there's nothing to block the heat today. 93. we've got a north, northwesterly wind. a little breeze at 13. humidity very dry. we've dried out a lot. this morning was really muggy but with the winds out of the west and northwest, brought in some slightly drier air. that's one reason we shot up to 93. not dry at all in the middle of the country.

still dealing with the remnants of tropical storm isaac. not even a tropical depression. no more advisories. we're still dealing with heavy rainfall in spots. louisiana, north central louisiana, even more showers and storms down south. into arkansas and mtz ms. now with the heavy -- missouri now with the heavy rains there. illinois and west central illinois. maybe six inches of rain over the next 36 to 48 hours. some of that moisture will try to sneak in here later in the weekend and over toward labor day. in the short term, we're going to do final. just really hot today. mid 90s. uncomfortably hot outside for any bit of time. we get to tonight. here we are at midnight. still quiet. tomorrow a couple of clouds start to stream toward us in the morning. out west we have a chance, especially in the afternoon for a thunderstorm or two. again mainly west and southwest of d.c., over toward the beaches. lots of high thin clouds as well. so at times partly sunny. other times might go mostly cloudy. not as hot tomorrow in the low 90s. by sunday we may wake up to a
