. hello. thank you for joining us. happy labor day. i'm jc hayward. flooded basements, submerged cars and metro tracks under wate it may be a holiday, but many d.c. residents are spending this labor day cleaning up after last night's storms. kristin fisher reports the bloomingdale neighborhood of northwest washington was hit the hardest. >> reporter: a d.c. driver rescued by firefighters after he drove into several feet of standing water on rhode island avenue. at least two other cars were partially submerged sunday night in the bloomingdale neighborhood. a neighborhood that's become known for major flooding during relatively minor summer storms. >> it's a valley. it's where all the rain comes and it floods out all the basement apartments. >> reporter: forest wilson

spent the morning cleaning up his mud caked sidewalk. >> in the 52 years you've been here, how many times would you say it's flooded your basement? >> i can't count them. >> reporter: recently it's gotten much worse. this is the fourth time this year that his basement has flooded. >> a whole lot of water down there. >> reporter: it's the same story at every single home up and down this street. mayor gray has actually started a task force to try and tackle all of the flooding in this neighborhood. in fact, the task force held its first meeting last tuesday. so far no solutions. for now, businesses along this stretch of rhode island avenue are putting up sandbags. if it's just a first floor business, it seems to keep the water out. but residents say that nothing, not even sandbags will keep out water from those basement apartments. are you frustrated that city officials haven't done more? >> yes. >> it's very frustrating. this is a great neighborhood. it's up and coming but when you have a situation where it's

flooding every couple of weeks in the summertime, it just brings down the whole neighborhood. >> reporter: in northwest washington, kristin fisher, 9news now. metro is operating normally today after suffering some flooding during last night's rains. water covered the tracks at the howard university metro station and that forced the transit agency to shut down service on both the yellow and green lines between the georgia avenue petworth and mount vernon square stations. the affected stations reopened around 11:40 last night. and more showers and storms are in the forecast. let's get right to howard with full details. howard? >> jc, the mugginess is out there. you can feel it. with the moisture around, a little bit of daytime heating, we've already seen a few showers and thunderstorms. heaviest stuff is east of us now. we have a lot of afternoon to get through. we have parades, barbecues, a lot of things are going on. let's give you the big picture. we have the remnants of isaac still out to the west. you see the moisture spinning

in ohio and the moisture also ts our way. mostly cloudy skies and some showers and thunderstorms south and east of us. going to switch it over to just the dopplers now. you can see we have the lightning going on in the bay, especially with this cell here toward annapolis. other showers south and southwest of town. everything moving north and east. so the stuff we're seeing east of i-95 moving into charles county, this is attacking that way. there's a very heavy cell, colonial beach, the northern neck, you're probably going to see this rain the next one to two hours. this cell is moving up this week but queenstown up to chester towntown, will have to worry about that in the immediate future. strong downpours in these thunderstorms and that's really going to be a problem in some spots. full forecast coming up in a few minutes. jc? a suicide bomber attacked a u.s. government vehicle in pakistan today. two pakistanis were killed and more than a dozen others were injured, including two american

consulate workers. pakistani police say the bomber packed his car with 240 pounds of explosives and rammed the car into a u.s. vehicle on a busy street. there has been no claim over responsibility but al qaeda and the taliban are suspected. there is a trib bought today to a fallen navy seal. petty officer first class patrick feeks was killed last month when his helicopter went down during a firefight with insurgents in afghanistan. a procession carrying petty officer feeks' body leforts dover airs -- left dover air force base this morning. the procession made its way through anne arundel county, ending at a funeral home in his hometown of wedgewater, maryland -- edgewater, maryland. he will be buried in arlington national cemetery on wednesday. some georgetown residents are taking crime fighting into their own hands. the citizens association of georgetown is adding private

surveillance cameras to their neighborhood. the group hopes to make it harder for crooks to break in to cars and rip off cell phones. under d.c. law, private citizens have more leeway than police when using the cameras. however, some critics are voicing concerns about privacy rights. the democratic national convention will kick off tomorrow. randall pinkston is in charlotte, north carolina where the party is already under way. >> reporter: actor jeff bridges took to the stage for a sound track at charlotte's carolina fest. the democratic national convention host committee is putting on this day long street party for the public. president obama is making his way to charlotte through key battleground states. today he's holding a labor day rally in ohio. democrats are fending off republican attacks that the president's first term has been a failure. dnc chairman and los angeles mayor told cbs this morning the country is better off now than

it was four years ago. we were losing 800,000 jobs a month. the answer is yes, we are better off but we've got to keep on working harder. >> reporter: a delegate from maryland agrees. we've had -- owe. >> we've had more private development in the last few months. >> reporter: security is tight where the big speeches start tuesday. streets remain open today to allow the public to enjoy carolina fest. there will are music and entertainment all day. party leaders, including congressman emmanuel cleaver are stressing the work that still needs to be done. >> president obama, if he's reelected as we expect, somehow we've got to have a much better relationship with the house or the american public will suffer. >> reporter: a new charlotte observer elon university poll shows mitt romney running four points ahead of president obama in north carolina, a state he won in 2008. randall pinkston, cbs news,

charlotte. republican mitt romney is spending his day in new hampshire preparing for the presidential debates. today is the last day of summer vacation for most youngsters in northern virginia. it is back to school tomorrow for students in arlington, fairfax, prince william and stafford counties of as well as the cities of alexandria, falls church, fredricksburg and manassas. in arlington county, some parents are upset that their youngsters will not be able to take the bus. they say they were notified last month that arlington public schools are getting rid of 12 bus stops. some parents are concerned that their children will have to walk nearly a mile to gliebe elementary school and across some busy roadways. the move affects about 1,000 students. arlington's superintendent says that the change was necessary because growing enrollment was causing the bus system to become overloaded. a labor day tradition

he was one of the most colorful and controversial figures in modern times. the reverend sun myung moon died yesterday. his family said he died in south korea from complications from knew money ya. haze varied career -- pneumonia. his varied career included the founding of the unification church in 1954 and "the washington times" in 1982. we spoke with the times president thomas mcdevitt yesterday. he had the opportunity to spend time with reverend moon. >> what i was most impressed about was his vision for media. he loved america with a passion. and the proof of that is his investment and involvement in

getting an alternative media source from the nation's capital. >> reverend moon was known for presiding over mass weddings. thousands of brides and grooms wore identical clothing leading some people to call the church a cult. church members were often referred to as moonies. the reverend sun myung moon was 92 years old. the u.s. coast guard played hero for actor russell crow this weekend. crow was kayaking with a friend off cole spring harbor on long island when the two got lost saturday evening. coast guard members on patrol heard the calls for help and came to their rescue. the crew ended up giving him and his friends a lift back to shore on their boat. britain's prince andrew decrended to europe's tall -- descended to europe's tallest building to raise money for

character. -- for charity. he started on the 84th floor of the abseils screw scraper and teetered down to the 20th floor. he said his training with the royal marines gave him the confidence to do this stunt but he says he will never do it again. isaac moves on but the recovery is just beginning on the gulf coast. we'll have the latest on the storm's aftermath. howard has full details on our forecast. jc, isaac may not be a storm any more in the tropical sense but the remnants will be plaguing us for the next few days. we'll let you know what that means. we go to break with a look at the allergy update. the tree pollen is up but it's tough on the weeds and mold. they're in the high category. grass is moderate. the full forecast coming up when 9news now returns.

a wildfire cut short the labor day weekend for thousands of tourists in california's angel's national forest. they were forced to evacuate when a fire broke out near a campground and grew quickly to 3600 acres. this is time lapsed video of the smoke and flames. crews are fighting the fire on the ground and from the air and the cause of the fire is being investigated. a minor earthquake rattled the los angeles area this morning. the 3.2 magnitude quake was centered in beverly hills. police say alarms went off all across the city, but there are

no signs of structural damage. president owe bam pa's taking a break if his campaign today -- president obama's taking a break from his campaign today. he will visit areas hit hardest by hurricane isaac. last week's storm left plenty of damage and a big cleanup job. andrew spencer has more. >> reporter: for some it's rebuilding time for the second time in seven years. first it was hurricane katrina. now it's isaac. >> our roof pretty much came off. all the water leaked in from the roof. it took down our sealants, took out the furniture. the flood water basically totaled the house. >> reporter: authorities dropped a mandatory evacuation order sunday for neighborhoods threatened by a strained lock on a canal but they still recommended people stay away. >> it means an awful lot. >> reporter: homeland security secretary janet napolitano visited the area. >> we came early as the senator said, and we will stay until

this recovery is complete. we are here to be part of the team, part of the team in louisiana, and make sure that hurricane isaac is put to rest as soon as we can for all of those affected. we know this is a big, big tough storm, but we'll work through it together. >> reporter: president obama will be in the new orleans area today to meet with officials and tour flood damage. his republican rival mitt romney did the same on friday. i'm andrew spencer reporting. >> as of last night 320,000 homes and businesses were still without power in the gulf region. howard is here to talk about our forecast. >> isaac still sitting out to the west. an area of low pressure out toward kentucky andeanian. it will -- and indiana. it will give us unsettled weather the next couple of days but things will get a little calmer. i know we have cookouts and a nats game starting in about an hour. earlier today some folks in spite of the humidity were out there going for a run at hanes

point enjoying the morning hours. it was a sticky morning and we have a sticky afternoon. here's a look at the day planner. you can expect temperatures to be climbing through the low to mid-80s. we've already clipped 81. up to 83 now. i think we'll make 85, maybe 86. winds out of the southeast at 5 to 10. we've got the thunderstorm symbol showing up every period but it's not going to be an all day rain. the threat for scattered showers and storms will be with us through the evening and even overnight and tomorrow and into wednesday. here's a look at the doppler radar going back to the last six hours or so you see the general motion from southwest to north, northeast here with some heavier showers and storms in a few spots. just want to zoom in. we've got stuff off to the south right now. you can see it here headed toward colonial beach, newland. you're just on the east end of this batch of showers moving from port royal to dahlgren into charles county or southwestern charles county. this is tracking up probably mainly west of 301, although la plata, white plains, waldorf,

you'll get in on this as well as this tracks into prince george's county in the next hour. then the heaviest thing we're looking at, heavy thunderstorm with some pretty good downpours from annapolis east across the bay bridge to queens town. this is moving up north. if you're on the coast in anne arundel county going across the bay bridge, you'll run into some of that. it's sticky outside and warm. we vupper 70s to low 8 -- upper 70s to low #s on. upper 70s, high humidity and with the high humidity around, any of these showers or storms that form have the potential like last night here in town to put down some very heavy downpours. on our weather camera, a couple of breaks here and there but mostly cloudy skies. temperature 83 at reagan national on the hour. humidity 67%. winds south at 11 and it's just a sticky day thanks to isaac. you can actually see it spinning right back here, counterclockwise, southern indiana, western kentucky. the energy is there. the moisture is there. now we've got the daytime heating so we'll pop up some of

these showers and storms. unfortunately i'm hoping for you it doesn't impact your barbecue or your afternoon plans but you just got to stay up on the radars today and see where the storms are popping. mid-80s this afternoon. scattered showers and storms. 70 to 75 tonight. tomorrow again mid-80s with the scattered storms. more so in the afternoon and evening. then wednesday mid to perhaps upper 80s with the scattered thunderstorms. as we head toward thursday, finally we're going to see a little more clearing so isolated storms, 90. friday looks okay and hot on the weekend. not too bad but there could be a couple of storms in the afternoon and evening hours with temps in the 80s. so just stay up on it and if you have to grill with an umbrella, so be it. i've done it before. >> i hope not. okay, howard fl thank you. coming up next, a new record is set at the national buffalo wing festival in upstate new york. what a surprise. president clinton: this election to me is about which...
