frederick and caroll county and continues to pull away from us. i'm optimistic that at least for the morning hours we'll generally be on the dry side of things. traffic volume will not be easy but as least the rain won't be coming down. here's a look at our day planner. i'm expecting temperatures to be climbing from the 70s to low 80s by noon. mid-80s by 3:00. we top out about 4:00, 5:00, somewhere around 87 with a chance for the scattered afternoon and evening thunderstorms once again. anything that falls today could have some locally heavy rains. we're in the 70s now. although luray and oakland have dipped into the 60s. 77, a very sticky 77 here in washington. 74 in easton and 72 in frederick. there's been some rain overnight. we had this batch of rain which lifted up generally north and west of d.c. and this morning as we look at it on the doppler radars, you can see all the activity generally pulling away from us. a couple of showers still from anne arundel, annapolis up toward baltimore. going into the 80s today. we'll watch for storms this afternoon. let's check in with monika at

5:00 a.m. she's watching for traffic. there's a fallen tree on beach drive. it's closed it joyce and bladden. in the meantime, let's take a look at our interstates. northbound i-95 you'll begin to see early volumes today. terrible traffic tuesday. we've been telling thu all morning. through woodbridge right now you're still okay through the occoquan river. a bit of volume forming here in springfield. let's show what you it looks like on the northbound side. yesterday of course was labor day and it was much lighter than this. so keep that in mind. tack on at least an extra 5 to 10 minutes to your commute this morning. let's take another look at our maps. this time we'll go to the bw parkway and route 50 through cheverly. you'll be okay. no problems on route 50 coming in from annapolis to the beltway and the prince george's county side of the beltway is incident free right now. here's 270 southbound coming down from father hurley down to the point where the lanes divide. right now no delays. i'll be back at 5:09. >> thank you, monika.

the final counties in northern virginia that didn't start classes last month are kicking off the 2012-2013 school year this morning. >> which includes fairfax county, the area's largest school system. kristin fisher is live in lorton with more on the traffic mess that people can expect this morning. hey, industries continue, good morning -- hey, chris continue, good morning. >> reporter: hey, good morning. before students get to enjoy their brand new building here at south county middle school, first they have to get here which is no small feat on a day that's been nicknamed terrible traffic tuesday. after a nice summer break, today marks the return to some of the worst traffic in the entire country. sounds pretty terrible, right? hence the name. here's a look at what you can expect on the roads today. this is all according to aaa. 2.8 million commuters on the road in the d.c. area. about a million students that will need to be transported to and from school and more than 7,000 school buses. here's john towson with aaa.

>> the traffic would increase by 26% over what the level of traffic and gridlock wise during the summer months. so you can expect a 26% increase in traffic and the bulk of that or ground zero will be around 9:00 when all the parents finish carrying their kids to school. >> reporter: with that 26% -- what that 26% increase in traffic means overnight means the average community in the d.c. area will jump from 20.4 minutes of traffic delays per day to 25.8. that's more than five minutes tacked on to your commute every day. the washington nationals tonight have a 7:00 home game against the chicago cubs. so unfortunately in addition to all this terrible traffic tuesday, you're going to see even more terrible traffic around nats park this evening because of that home game. so not a good day to be out on the road.

i'm not looking forward to my drive from here all the way back to d.c. probably during that 9:00 terrible hour that they tell you to avoid. >> stop and get some coffee. >> that's what i was going to say. >> take a break. kristin, we'll talk to you a little while later. well, tomorrow, a navy seal from maryland will be laid to rest at arlington national cemetery. hundreds of people lined route 2 yesterday in edgewater to honor the sacrifice of special warfare petty officer first class patrick feeks. police escorted feeks' body back to his hometown. he was killed last month when his helicopter crashed during a firefight in afghanistan. more heavy rain, more flooded basements in the bleeping dale section of north -- bleeping dale section of northwest -- bloomingdale section of northwest d.c. the flood waters damaged several cars and home. d.c. water says when a couple of inches of rain calms in less than an hour, there's only so -- falls in less than an hour, there's only so much that the

we're waiting to see if the remnants of hurricane isaac will end up damaging virginia's grape crop. wine makers say this year has been great for their vineyards till this week. rain at this point in the season can dilute the flavor of the grapes. so some growers opted to pick all the ripe grapes they had a few days ago before isaac arrived here. >> it's the first thing you look at in the morning. you look at it about ten times during the day and again at night. ultimately there's a bit of a roll of the dice. >> as wineries entertain customers with tastings, growers are keeping their eyes on the skies. after an extremely wet 2011, they're hoping they've timed this year's harvest just right. makes me think maybe i'll go to a wine tasting this weekend. >> i just saw the video and thought ooh, that looks fun. >> what do you have for us in the next 30 minutes? >> this could be a good time to go shopping for a new credit card. i'll explain that coming up.

understatement in many areas. had some showers and storms overnight that added to the mugginess if you will. today will be another day where we have showers to isolated with a better chance to see a few this afternoon. the eastern shore and delaware got hammered. we didn't see too much during the day but it wasn't that far away. here's a look at the bus stop forecast. damp out there because of the overnight rains and mugginess but there's not too much rain really. that's a good thing with temperatures running in the 70s. some spots the upper 70s. sunrise for the until 6:40. other than a stray shower, i think it is getting to be a dry morning for the most part. 76 at 8:00. by noon 83. so lunch time, yeah, cue probably get away -- you could probably get away with it outside. this afternoon better chance to see showers and storms in areas with 86 at 4:00. a high of about 87. by 8:00 82 degrees still with a couple of thunderstorms. not everybody will see them everywhere all the time, but this afternoon that's when we'll have the better chance. you see what's lifted up into

is trying to flow north. it's lifting into southern pennsylvania and jersey and to long island, but for us, we've got to wait to see what else is maybe going to form here and move back toward us as we get into the afternoon and evening hours. here's a look at the future cast. it's depicting that maybe the better chance of rains this afternoon will be out in the mountains, maybe into northern virginia. here we are by 6:00 south and east. not seeing too much. overnight some isolated showers and storms. tomorrow once again in the afternoon we're going to pop the showers and storms across the region as the front gets closer to us, but it's not like it's going to sweep through cleanly. it will dry us out a little bit by the end of the week. 87 today with the scattered showers and storms mainly this afternoon and this evening. tonight about 75 for the low. tomorrow 87. thursday isolated storm, 91. friday looks drier, 90. and then chances of storms returning over the weekend. that should be an 86 on sunday. i'll go fix that. mike and andrea, back to you. >> thank you, howard. after only one game

fisher is live in lorton where the buses will be rolling into a brand new school this morning. good morning, kristin. >> reporter: that's right. they'll be rolling in just over two hours. the opening bell here at south county middle school, a brand new building. opening bell is right around 7:55. so this is the end of summer and the end of this easier commute that we've gotten used to. as we've been saying all morning, this is terrible traffic tuesday. what that means is that overnight the traffic in the d.c. area has spiked 26%. now, that 26% increase means that the average commute is going to jump from 20.4 minutes of traffic delays per day to 25.8. that's according to aaa. that's essentially more than 5 minutes tacked on to your commute every day. here's john towson with aaa. >> we expect 2.8 million commuters on the highways and transportation systems tomorrow.

one million kids, 7,000 school buses, and the absolute return to the absolute worst gridlock in the country. >> reporter: now, unfortunately there's not a whole lot that you can do, but a few reminders here. aaa advises everybody just set your alarm clocks back about 30 minutes to account for the take congestion. take public transportation if you can, although i know that's tough when you're trying to get your kids to school and yourself to work. finally if at all possible, avoid driving during the 9:00 a.m. hour because that's when a lot of parents are still in the process of getting done with car pools, dropping their kids off at school. if at all possible, avoid 9:00 on the roads. wake up extra early, get into work, do what you can because you do not want to be on the roads at 9:00 today, especially if there's a little bit of rain in the forecast. andrea? >> telecommuting is sounding better and better, kristin. thank you. there's a little good news for commuters in prince william

county. there's a new parking option along telegraph road in woodbridge. the telegraph road lot opens today. it's between the horner road lot and kayton hill road. the lot was built after potomac mills malls cut 23500 -- 2500 spaces in 2011 for small expaption. while there -- expansion. while there are bus bays, buses haven't been rerouted to stop at this lot. that should happen later this fall. a former top aide to d.c. vincent gray is due in court for a status hearing. today the judge could set a sentencing date and sources tell 9news now the prosecutors will not be asking for prison time for thomas gore as part of his plea deal. polls for a special election in northern virginia open in less than 30 minutes. voters in the 45th district will elect a new delegate to replace democrat david englin.

not quite an hour at 6:40. a few low clouds there to our south and west with a temperature of 75. dew point 72. that is some kind of sticky outside. with calm winds, it's not helping at all. humidity at 89%. big heat. that's still going on in texas and oklahoma. they could be around 105 today. all these showers and storms scattered from the deep south all the way toward us thanks to what's left of isaac. kind of spinning back here. a little tough to see but over kentucky and tennessee. there's a frontal boundary in the midwest that will try to come and maybe give us a little relief as we head toward friday. but with the front hanging out over the weekend, we'll still see more shower and thunderstorm chances saturday, sunday, monday as well. today by noon isolated showers here and there. this afternoon a scattering of showers and storms through tonight. by tomorrow morning, we're relatively quiet to start but by midday, more showers and storms will be popping. some of those thunderstorms, jersey, delaware could be on the hefty side with the

welcome back. your weather first. just a few minutes before 6:00 a.m. on this tuesday morning. the showers we had overnight have generally lifted away from the region. as we head toward mid-morning we still should be dry. i'm thinking we're in good shape for the morning chute. toward midday -- morning commute. toward midday, showers and a rumble of thowndzer that will be the case this afternoon with highs in the mid to possibly upper 80s. watch out for that. >> how water, thank you. what -- howard, thank you. what does it take for a high school graduate to earn a full college ride? >> this girl's soccer team just won the championship. the squad will look different next year because most of the senior players are starting their senior year of high school. their college plans are set.

>> reporter: what does it take to be the best? >> you have to have passion. you have to have commitment. >> reporter: after an undefeated season, the vsa heat girls soccer team out of haymarket, virginia won the national championship. in the tournament last month, they played four games and never gave up a goal. >> we were up 4-0 at half. >> reporter: the final game score was 6-0. goalie taylor kirk citizen had a lot to do with that but gives credit to her defenders. >> i would say that we have without a doubt have the best defense in the nation. >> reporter: the team was formed ten years ago. in 2007, 9news covered the you 12 team when it was third in the nation. five of those girls are still with the team giving it all they've got. >> leave it all on the field. >> reporter: now players come from four counties, prince william, fairfax, fauquier, stafford and as far away as richmond. megan cox is from springfield.

>> it's a good hour and 15- minute drive. we drive two to three times a week out here. >> reporter: to play at this level, the sacrifices are shared by their families. >> i don't really remember the last time we did like a family vacation to just like the beach. it's always to soccer tournaments. >> it's a financial and time commitment but if your daughter loves it, you can't not do it. >> reporter: for the best players, that cost may pay off in scholarships which is ringing true with the vsa heat. there are 17 high school seniors and one high school junior and they've all received offers for college scholarships to play soccer at division one schools. some have received full rides. savannah miller will play for auburn next year. >> all my life i've been committed to soccer. i want to see how far i can go with it. >> reporter: taylor will play for wake forest. >> it's crazy to think about it. it's a dream come true pretty much. >> reporter: while the girls now look forward to their futures playing soccer in college and maybe beyond, they say they'll cherish the years
