at home, president clinton will have to compete with the start of the n.f.l. season. susan mcginnis, cbs news, charlotte. republican mitt romney could have a tougher time winning the battleground state of virginia. that's because the state board of elections is going to allow a third party candidate to appear on the ballot after certifying his petitions yesterday. that third party candidate is former congressman goud. he's running at the constitution party's candidate. he's popular with conservatives in southwestern virginia and that could draw away crucial votes from mitt romney. the results are in from tuesday's special election in northern virginia. the 45th district house seat was up for grabs after democrat david englin resigned over an extramarital affair. the state board of elections website shows the democrat got 75% of the vote. the district includes parts of fairfax and arlington counties and the city of alexandria. a public memorial service for astronaut neil armstrong

will be held next week right here in northwest washington. the national cathedral will host the service next thursday, september 13. arl strong was the first -- armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon. he died last month at the age of 82. the service begins at 10:00 a.m. and is open to the public. it will be streamed live on the cathedral's website as well as nasa's website. it's time for the latest your money report of the morning. >> let's talk wall street. the lovely jessica doyle is here to talk about numbers. good morning. >> good morning to both of you. we're coming off sort of the dead of the day for wall street. it was a mixed day. at least the upside is we weren't down across the board. some stocks were able to overcome downbeat reports on construction spending and manufacturing. and investors have a new crop of economic indicators to look over later today. checking the numbers, the dow stands at 13,036 after dropping 55 points. nasdaq up by 8. s&p 500 was down by 2 points. facebook stock touched an

innings. he picked up his ninth win of the season. the nats totaled six home runs last night with a big win 11-5 the final over chicago. the baltimore orioles in the midst of a pennant race. last night no doubting that this team came to play. mark reynolds got the ball rolling in the 5th, a three-run shot to left, his 17th of the season. the orioles piled it on. after that baltimore wins 12-0 over toronto. they share first place in the al east with the new york yankees. the holdout by ravens bryant mckinney is over. the offensive tackle and the team were finally able to agree on a deal. the ravens on the verge of releasing mckinney before he agreed to restructure his deal which cuts his salary by $1 million. they didn't feel the dispute with be a distraction to the team. >> really no concern about that. i don't think it will be an issue at all. guys are pros and guys

obama had a big job at the democratic national convention. >> she remains a widely popular figure but the first lady is doing her best to boost her husband's appeal. 9 news reporter kristen fisher has more on how she did from our satellite center. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. michele obama has always been a very good public speaker but she's become even better after four years of first lady giving speeches all over the world. last night she had charisma, energy. she rallied the base. and she really tried to remind the independent voters of why they voted for her husband four years ago. >> i have seen firsthand that being president doesn't change who you are. no, it reveals who you are. >> reporter: michele obama needed to do something very similar to what ann romney did one week ago. she needed to humanize her husband, make him seem more appealing, more ak esible. she -- accessible. she also very subtly attacked romney without using his name.

she used personal stories to draw contrast between her husband's upbringing and the more privileged upbringing of his opponent. she also said that the reasons she loves the president should be the same reasons that voters reelect him. >> i'd -- i love that he's never forgotten how he started. i love that we can trust barack to do what he says he's going to do even when it's hard, especially when it's hard. i love that for barack. there is no such thing as us and them. he doesn't care whether you're a democrat, a republican, or none of the above. he knows that we all love our country. >> reporter: by all accounts you can see first lady really delivered a home run last night. two other big name politicians that spoke very eloquently last night and are well known in this area, former virginia governor tim kaine and maryland governor martin o'malley. both of them gave speeches last night and i'll have some

highlights from their talks coming up in half an hour at 6:00. >> kristin fisher reporting from our satellite center. president obama spoke to 11,000 people yesterday in norfolk, virginia, and last week mitt romney and paul ryan stopped in norfolk, right after the republican national convention. here's another sign of just how crucial winning virginia is this fall. this is the seating arrangement for the democratic convention. you can see virginia has won of the coveted floor seat sections compared with maryland and d.c. their spots are in the far back corner. i guess you'd call that an obstructed view maybe. >> maybe, yes. might not have paid as much for their tickets. 5:33 now. d.c. police are investigating another robbery and attack near capitol hill. a male victim recovering if minor injuries but police say two men approached him on north carolina avenue in southeast. one had a handgun and they demanded hispersonnal property. the men -- his personal property. the men pushed him to the ground and beat him before they

took off. neighbors around the area are pretty apprehensive. >> we're obviously concerned. we're pretty close to the capitol so this doesn't happen very often. >> i hope it's -- definitely hope it gets figured out soon because it's very uncomfortable. for us that's pretty close to where we live. >> the victim in last month's attack near capitol hill is improving. his name is thomas maslin. he's been upgraded from serious to fair condition. he went to a nationals game back on august 18 and out for a drink on capitol hill with friend. he was found unconscious after being beaten just a few blocks from his home. an arlington woman make as deal to avoid a possible death sentence. 48-year-old natalia wilson pleaded guilty yesterday to to counts of capital murder. you may remember wilson admitted she thought of her husband's ex-wife as a romantic rival. back in february 2010, the woman was found dead stabbed to death more than 50 times and

her son with his throat slashed. kenyan mcduffy wants all relevant agencies to use their resources and create a relief fund for the bloomingdale section of washington, d.c. he hopes constituent will ask for federal assistance. bloomingdale and nearby areas have had ongoing flood issues. mayor vincent gray has set up a task force to look into possible solutions. it is 5:35. time for another your money report. jessica doyle is back with the latest and greatest from apple. >> the worst kept secret in the world is about to be spilled officially next week. do you know a -- did you know a new iphone was in the works? crazy, right. the company has invited reporters to a news event next wednesday in san francisco. word is apple will introduce the iphone 5 or whatever it ends up calling the latest

companies have to invest in making things. infrastructure, construction, production. we need it now more than ever. chevron's putting more than $8 billion dollars back in the u.s. economy this year. in pipes, cement, steel, jobs, energy. we need to get the wheels turning. i'm proud of that. making real things... for real. ...that make a real difference. ♪ are you ready for a snowmageddon? say it isn't so but that's what the second oldest almanac in the u.s. is predicting. the town and country almanac based in hagueerstown, maryland just released its 2013 edition, the 217th edition in its history. it predicts a very snowy winter for the mid-atlantic. it calls for snow as early as november 28. mark that down and as late as the end of march.

two december nor'easters, 15 heavy snow days and asmuch as 50 inches of snow. >>hat i would like to do is take that report and then go just before last year's winter and see what the almanac said about last year's winter. >> i do know that a friend at state college pennsylvania are also calling for a snowy winter in the east. for me it's early. we usually come out on our prediction in early november. i'm watching these things and find it entertaining. >> get the snow shovels now. don't wait till later on. >> we had two inches of snow last year so i think it's safe to say this will be a more active winter than last year. let's get you going with a loot at our day planner. doesn't feel anything close to winter this morning. warm and muggy. warm, muggy, isolated showers out there with

a sunrise not until 6:41 this morning. we'll see a couple of showers or storms here and there during the day today. not going to rain -- won't even rain half the time i think. maybe a quarter of the time at most. 85 at 4:00 p.m. highs could be near 90 with enough sunshine and even this evening still an isolated shower can't be ruled out. we're watching such coming out of western maryland and western virginia toward the northern shenandoah valley. i want to show you the dom letter from berkley springs down -- doppler from berkley springs down. over toward strasburg and winchester, stephen city, this is almost toward i-81 as it comes across the stateline moving east at 40 miles an hour. and a little shower between new market and woodstock which is going to track probably just north of luray here over the next little while. temperatures, they're running in the 70s. a balmy morning. 73 for winchester. 77 in fredricksburg. and 74 in catlett from charlie.

a sticky 79 in reidville and pax river, easton. here in d.c. this morning we are way warm. our michael & son weather cam great visibility in spite of having mostly cloudy skies. 79 degrees. winds up out of the south at 11 this morning. that breeze is keeping the fog from forming with humidity 79%. got moisture stretched out from southwestern virginia all the way up into new england. so that's what we're watching this morning. then clusters of storms also in the midwest approaching chicago. you have a flight through chicago this morning, check with the airlines. there could be delays with the clusters of storms. for us a few scattered showers and storms. looks like the activity will be more south and east this afternoon than north and west as we get up well into the 80s. if we get enough sunshine, we might see temperatures poking toward the 90-degree mark and we'll have fewer storms over the next couple of afternoons so consequently we'll be even hotter. 87 today. tonight back in the 70s. the scattered showers and storms today. a few storms tomorrow afternoon but fewer than today, 93. i think just an isolated storm

at most on friday, 93. the weekend features increasing rain chances saturday, 87. sunday 82. a front will come through so i think sunday morning has a chance for a lingering shower or storm. look how nice the forecast is. monday and tuesday upper 70s. those lows in the low 60s, that's at reagan national. 5:49. timesaver traffic. right now you're just basically dealing with a lot of volume. there had been a couple of little incidents, a disabled vehicle northbound on 95 near route 630 coming up toward aquia harbor. that was cleared to the right shoulder but left a few brake lights now. other than that things are looking a tiny bit slow as you try to get into triangle and across the river in woodbridge. we'll take a live look in springfield and again just that volume forming. this is what it looks like as you leave route 644 headed for the beltway and 395 which still looks good through landmark to the 14th street bridge. back over to the maps. this time we'll go all the way to the north side of town. first of all there is an accident out in frederick

eastbound i-70 after route 17. apparently it's blocking two lanes there. southbound 270 is beginning to slow down leaving frederick toward clarksburg. that's normal for 5:50 in the morning. now we'll take a live look outside southbound 270 at falls road. this is still good as you head for the point where the lanes divide and across the american legion bridge. i'll be back with more at 6:00. this time last year hurricane irene was just starting to fade which tropical storm lee dumped even more rain on the mid-atlantic. >> that was a rough couple of weeks. lee washed away more than a dozen bridges and roads in fairfax county. surae chinn looks into the rebuilding efforts and the search for some stronger solutions. >> reporter: folks here remember there was no bridge here last year washed away by the flood waters of tropical storm lee. in its place these rocks and a temporary fix. now a year later like so many bridges here washed away that day, there's been no permanent

fix. >> i remember the bridge being swept up and how horrible that was for us. >> reporter: charlotte edwards had to take the long way around just to do her errands because of the lost bridge. >> i think it was two and a half miles out of my way just to get out of my house to go the other way and around. >> reporter: it took to months for vdot to fix it. >> it seemed like years but it was definitely a long time. all the roads were going up to route 7 were washed out. and we used to joke we live on a cul-de-sac. >> reporter: overbearing flood waters wiped out bridges across fairfax county creating sink holes that cars fell into. >> we'll always have the challenge. there will be storms that are in excess of the design capacity. they can't afford to design every bridge to meet the ultimate rainstorm. >> they should spend the money to do it right and build -- build a bridge down here. stop piecemealing it. this has been going on for 0 years. >> reporter: fairfax county board of supervisor john foust said they're in the works to

make a stronger structure to with stand the rain. >> if something happens, we'll be ready to respond. >> not much you can do about mother nature. >> reporter: it will cost roughly $1 to $1.5 million to replace each bridge and we're still a year to two years away from completion. for now we have to watch and hope another storm doesn't wash them away. in fairfax county, surae chinn, 9news now. making news now at 5:53, this may look like snow at first glance, but that is sand being scooped away off the highway in alabama. crews at the popular tourist destination are cleaning up after hurricane isaac there. the sand also needs to be cleaned before it gets returned to the beach. firefighters are making progress against a blaze scorching the san gabriel mountains near los angeles. at last word the fire is about 25% contained. that's up from 5% earlier this week. the other good news is the fire

welcome back. a 2 moaldz mystery in charlottesville, virginia has been solved. the case of a boa constrictor loose at a shopping center. >> we spoke with the man who found the slithery reptile. >> reporter: this boa showed up in the parking lot of the boathouse restaurant right by this former employee's car. >> it was around a fossors beer can, around 7 feet long. >> reporter: the snake is something of a legend around

seminole square. >> what i heard is the pet store here in the shopping center closed down, released their animals, and then somebody saw the boa constrictor. then one of our dsh washers saw it -- dish washers saw it one night. he decided to stab it which is why it has its injuries. >> reporter: the stab wounds still visible, the snake believed to be dead after several searches turned up empty. >> people would show up. are you here to join us to dine? no, we came to look for the snake. >> reporter: he wasn't looking for the snake. he was just there to pick up his paycheck. >> i saw it was injured. i didn't want to leave it to die. i got on the phone and tried to call everybody i could. i found the virginia reptile rescue and thought we could get it a good home instead of out here to die. my girlfriend would not let me keep it. it's a beautiful snake but i'm not allowed to keep it.
