delegates heard a longer than expected speech from former president bill clinton. >> that it was. now, what never happened before, a former president formerly nominating an incumbent? >> reporter: a detailed criticism of the obama administration, president clinton gave his party a reminder of what was the good old days. as you saw, president obama showed up this evening to look the place over, but the night belonged to bill clinton. very strong winds and some severe thunderstorms. they could roll the die and get away with it but they want to take the safer road. let's look at the satellite picture. we'll zoom into the thunderstorms. there is a big line of heavy duty thunderstorms from kentucky back into tennessee. this could roll in there tomorrow, probably before the speech. but, again, their main thunderstorm with lightning and heavy rain. these are hefty storms pulling out of kentucky at this time. right now it's quiet in charlotte. we'll zoom up to us. we're kind of quiet too. we're looking at perhaps some fog overnight, especially in southern fauquier county where you saw the showers roll through earlier tonight. the good news is for your wake up weather, it's going to be dry tomorrow. 68-76 by 5:00. in the 70s. just humid by 7:00. and 76-83 with partly cloudy skies by 9:00. we'll come back, we'll talk about the potential for more storms here and look ahead to the weekend. >> thank you, topper. new tonight at 11:00, the secret service investigating the

reported theft of republican presidential candidate mitt romney's federal tax letters. a letter demanded a million dollars in ransom to prevent those papers from being disclosed. now, the senator claims the returns were stolen back in august during a watergate style break in at the company's offices in franklin, tennessee. a federal judge has ruled officers in arizona can enforce a controversial state immigration law. under that law, once they've targeted somebody for a crime, they can ask that person about the immigration status to see if they're here illegally. it has been at the center of a court battle over the past two years. opponents have been arguing it would lead to racial profiling. fairfax county police raided a suspected dog fighting ring in alexandria today. as matt jablow reports, one man was arrested and a number of dogs were seized. >> reporter: over the course of three hours, fairfax county

police executed a field search warrant at 4511 tipton lane. male and female adult dogs and puppies. officers also took out various items often used to train fighting dogs. treadmills, harnesses, heavy chains and a device used to force breeding. the suspected ring leader right now faces one charge of being an unfit animal owner, but more charges could be added as the investigation continues. as for the dogs, their fate is now unclear. >> pit bulls unfortunately are filling a lot of the shelters in the area. >> reporter: michelle yu is director of behavior and training at the washington animal rescue league where she occasionally rehabilitates pit bulls. many pit bulls that were trained to fight can be retrained not to. >> they lack a lot of socialization. they're sometimes a little less confident.

but they can be placed after some rehabilitation. hand feeding. working with the volunteers. going out for walks. doing the things normal pets do. >> reporter: back to the case today in alexandria, police have not yet named the suspect. but we do know that he had been arrest and released recently on another unrelated charge. >> let's hope for the best for those dogs. thank you, matt. she was out for a leisurely swim and soon became the target of a rabid beaver on a rampage. now an elderly woman is recovering at a local hospital from the bloody encounter. it happened tuesday night and today animal control officers confirmed the beaver tested positive for rabies. it attacked the woman near the shore and wouldn't let up. a pair of fisherman who saw the commotion managed to kill the an ma with their paddles before pulling the -- animal with their paddles before pulling the woman to safety. >> she is screaming help me. help me. aisle get out of the water. she's like, i can't, it's got me. get out. please hurry. and i got there and the other

woman was bleeding. >> the victim was taken to fairfax hospital for treatment of minor injuries. she's expected to be okay. new tonight at 11:00, as the number of west nile cases sky rockets, one county in maryland is fighting back. beginning next week, anne arundel county will begin spraying for mosquitoes. in fact, there is evidence the virus has begun to spread there as well. and today we've also learned from the centers of disease control that the number of west nile cases has gone up 25% in just the last week. 87 people have died from the infection this year, including somebody in the state of maryland. the cdc is recommending using insect repellant. you can also get rid of mosquito breeding sites by removing standing water anywhere near your home. and the board that runs dulles and national airports is taking some steps to repair its battered image. the federal transportation secretary, the mayor of dc and the governors of both virginia and maryland have questioned, among other things, the board

spending on travel. well, now the metropolitan washington airport authority has adopted a travel policy limiting spending, and it requires approval before a trip can be taken. >> the bottom line is we're putting in best practices and it's our job, the chairman and my job, to make sure that we follow those practices and that we earn whatever trust we have lost. >> the board also says it is doing away with no bid single source contracts. future contracts will have to go through a competetive process. new tonight at 11:00, the husband of a murdered georgetown socialite has been found competent to stand trial. doctors at st. elizabeth say 48-year-old albrecht moose understands the legal process. he's accused of beating and strangling his 91-year-old wife last summer in their georgetown home. she was a former journalist and socialite. tonight the search continues for two men behind a bizarre bank robbery in los angeles. a bank of america teller says

in tonight's health alert on the same day the nfl kicks off its regular season, new research is out showing professional football players may face a greater danger of alzheimer's and other brain disorders. kevin spent seven years in the nfl. now at age 43, he is battling als. recent studies suggest head injuries on the field may lead

to neurological problems years later. this research in the journal of neurology looked at 3400 retired players who spent at least five years in the nfl and found they were three times for likely to die from a degenerative brain disease. >> never have i thought that my mental or cognitive abilities would be impaired by playing this game. >> now turner is trying to make sure other athletes know they could be putting themselves at risk when they play the game. some former nfl players are suing the league, accusing the league of hiding the information. the national zoo has received $400,000 to study the health of giant pandas. ford motor company is sponsoring the research. some of that money will also be used to upgrade the zoo's panda cams which means it will be easier for you to watch the pandas online.

a lot of eyes on majon right now. zoo vets say there's a chance she may be pregnant. and the democratic national convention goes on in charlotte, north carolina. we are joined now by martin o'malley who knows a thing or two about what it's like to step up on the podium. governor, i have to ask you, tell me how it feels when you step out in front of that sea of people looking at you saying, hey, inspire me? >> well, i tell you, it is a very humbling honor. and it's also really ex hill rating to be able -- exhilarating to be able to look out and have the sense of history to see the signs of the 50 states and realize what an important moment this is as we select our president for the next four years. so i'll tell you one other thing, derek, it was great relief to have that talk end and be able to walk off. it was like being done with four final exams all in a span of about five minutes. >> i can only imagine.

>> now, governor, i have to ask you about what happened over the weekend when they ask you the now famous or notorious, however you want to look at it, are you better off now than you were four years ago. you answered in a way that i thought was honest. you said, no, but that was the answer to the democrats wanted you to give. i wanted you to know how long was it before your phone rang and who was on the other end of that call? >> well, you know, i didn't even really realize i it said it. i was answering the wrong question. i was answering the question are we better off now than we were before the recession. and we're not better offnow than we were before the -- off now than we were before the recession. but we're better off than we were four years ago. our country is creating jobs instead of losing jobs. in our state of maryland, we recovered 30% of the jobs we lost. so we need to keep moving forward. we need to keep doing the things that work that create jobs and expand our economy. this is hard tough work.

it was a very deep recession. but we're coming back from it. we are doing better as a country because we're creating jobs again. >> you know, you did hear earlier tonight from the ceo of car max, and is that part of your effort to debunk the gop charge that you didn't build that? >> any successful entrepreneur will tell you that their business is built by collaboration. by lots of people working together to create a unique and good product or service and push it out there on the marketplace. so in our state, we were named number one state in america for innovation and entrepreneurship by the u.s. chamber of commerce. and most entrepreneurs i talked with know that government needs to do its job if we're going to have a private sector that can create jobs with innovation, with research and development and be able to transport goods across roads and bridges that

are in repair. >> all right. thank you for your time. we appreciate it. >> derek, thank you. >> all right. you know, part of the storms really mess things up for them. >> again, odds are they could probably have gone and gotten away with it. but they don't want to chance that with 60,000 people in there. >> outside. >> i would not want to do that. we're looking at the same air mass. it's essentially the remnants of isaac coupled with a couple of frontal boundaries. let's start with the michael and son weather cam. this is looking down wisconsin avenue towards bethesda and we're looking at pretty good visibility here. there is fog elsewhere. high is 90. we're still 80. dew point in the 70s. not very comfortable. winds are calm. humidity 81%. pressure rising to 29.84 inches of mercury. satellite picture radar combined, we'll zoom into the storm one more time. there is a frontal boundary that stretches essentially from north of the metro area across kentucky, back into west central tennessee. and this is stationary when it goes red blue, red blue.

it's not going to move much. there is another boundary behind that and that will clear us out late in the weekend. in the meantime between this frontal boundary and isaac, we're in a tropical air mass with showers and storms possible. any storm that develops. because air mass is so moist and juicy, it can produce some very, very heavy rains. right now we're looking at a good radar sweep. that is your best chance of havi dense fog in the morning and mr. bernstein will be here bright and early at 4:25 for that. so patchy fog early. the morning commute will be dry, except for the patchy fok, you should be able -- fog, you should be able to leave your normal time. hot and humid tomorrow. we might hit 91 tomorrow and still very humid. a few big thunderstorms. not very many. those will develop. we'll have hefty rains. that's the biggest he threat. overnight we're looking at partly cloudy skies, humid, humid, patchy dense fog. downtown we're talking mid 70s

one thing that makes our day when we're on the field is watching lauren get up to bat. our daughter loves baseball. and we tried to get her on some teams, and there were some coaches that would include her but she just never felt right about it. hitting the ball and then making the other kids wait, just wasn't her idea of what baseball was. we thought she would just have to settle for being a fan; until rotary stepped in. and they built this special field. they took an idea of just letting the kids play baseball and made it fit these kids, rather than trying to make the kids fit the field. lauren forgets about what she can't do, because they've given her the opportunity to do something that we never thought possible. when these kids get to play ball, their heart is there they're so excited and they just get to feel like regular kids. on the phone i heard her telling her grandmother that she was the luckiest kid in the world.
