every day and bought flags for his whole town and one of the cars he built to surprise his wife. he gives me hope. the family business in minnesota that didn't lay off a single one of their 4,000 employees when the recession hit. even when their competitors shut down dozens of plant. even when it meant the owner gave up some perks and some pay. because they understood that their biggest asset was the community and th workers who had helped build that business. they give me hope. ( cheers and applause ). i think about the young sailor i met at walter reed hospital, still recovering from a grenade attack that will cause him to

have his leg amputated above the knee. six months ago we would watch him walk into a white house dinner honoring those who served in iraq, tall, and 20 pounds heavy edashing in his uniform, with a big grin on his face, sturdy on his new leg. and i remember how a few months after that, i would watch him on a bicycle, racing with his fellow wounded warriors on a sparkling spring day, ipspying other heroes who had just begun the hard path he had traveled. he gives me hope. ( applause ) he gives me hope. i don't what party these men and women belong to. i don't know if they'll vote for me. but i know that their spirit defines us. they remind me in the words of ecripture that ours is a future filled with hope.

and if you share that faith with me, if you share that hope with mei ask you tonight for your vote. ( cheers and applause ). if you reject the notion that this nation's promise is reserved for the few, your voice must be heard in this election. if you reject the notion that our government is forever beholden to the highest bidder, you need to stand up in this election. ( cheers and applause ). if you believe that new plant and factories can dot our landscape, that new energy can power our future, that new schools can provide ladders of opportunity to this nation of dreamers, if you believe in a country where everyone gets a fair shot and everyone does their fair share and everyone plays by the same rules, then i need you to vote this november. ( cheers and applause ).

america, i never said this journey would be easy, and i won't promise that now. yes, our path is harder. but it leads to a better place. yes, our road is long ebut we travel it together. we don't turn back. we leave no one behind. we pull each other up. we draw strength from our victories, and we learn from our mistakes, but we keep our eyes fixed on that distant horizon, knowing that providence is with us, and we are surely blessed to be citizens of the greatest nation on earth. thank you, god bless you. and god bless these united states. . >> pelley: president obama making his case for a second term as president of the united states. tell the audience essentially that we're all on a journey together, that progress has been made and he urged everyone in the hall to build on it. mrs. obama and the obama's daughters malia, age 14, who started high school this week. and sasha, of course, age 11.

and here is joe biden and his wife, dr. jill biden joining the obamas. bob schieffer, a classic barack obama speech but there was one line in particular that i heard that i'm not sure i have ever heard a president say. he said, "i'm proud of what we've achieved together, but i am far more mindful of my own failings." >> reporter: yeah, and i think that was an effort to say to people and to answer people who talked about, you know, that he had called for hope and change and he had built up people's hopes, and maybe beyond expectations that he could actually deliver on. it was a speech that did, as we

were told it would, draw contrasts between these two very different visions for america. but this was not-- this was not the kind of speech that bill clinton made last night. you just-- it just didn't have that little spark, it seemed to me, that clinton had, over and over again. i thought it was a good speech. i thought he laid out his side of the story here. but it was hard for me to pick out a headline here. what is the line we're going to remember? maybe it's the one you just cited from this speech. and i must say, in that sense, i didn't hear it. >> pelley: in the 2008 speech, when he was first nominated, he hammered releaptlessly on john mccain, his opponent, by name. i'm not sure we heard mitt romney's name. >> reporter: i think you're probably right. i don't think i ever did hear that-- there were a couple of good laugh lines in there.

i think the republican solution to everything is take two tax cuts and call us in the morning. i thought that was pretty good. but that-- that soaring rhetoric that we heard in the speech in 2008, i didn't hear that tonight. maybe it's just me. but maybe i'm still getting over the bill clinton speech last night. but i just didn't hear that. >> pelley: norah adonnell is down next to the podium on the convention floor. norah. >> reporter: well, scott, it's raining confetti down here. there aren't balloons because, of course, they moved this thing inside. but i think if there was one line that the president summed up kind of what this speech was about and the message, he said, "you didn't elect me to tell you what you wanted to hear. you elected me to tell you the truth. and the truth is it will take more few years for to us solve challenges that have built up over decades." he's asking for patience to finish the job. and then i think there were some

pretty tough remarks about his opponent, mitt romney, specifically he said, "i will never turn medicare into a voucher," and then he mocked him on foreign policy saying that "my opponent and his running mate are new to foreign policy." he said, "after all, you don't call russia our number one enemy and not al qaeda unless you're still stuck in a cold war time warp." so there are some of thedition he got in against his republican opponents, scott. >> pelley: and one thing where he drew a line in the sand, which he has done before, of course, he said in terms of tax breaks for the wealthy "i never will." nancy cordes on the convention floor with us tonight. nancy. >> reporter: scott, norah talked about foreign policy, and one thing that the obama campaign made very clear before the speech was that the president was going to talk about afghanistan, and that he was going to talk about the troops, two topics that governor romney omitted in his speech in tampa last week. and it was on foreign policy that the president unleashed

some of his harshest attacks against his opens, saying they subscribe to a blustering, bumbling, old school foreign policy philosophy, and asking how governor romney can negotiate with a power like china when he offends one of our greatest allies, the u.k., during a recent visit to the london olympics. he said that americans can choose leadership that has been proven and tested. and then, of course, he was talking about himself. >> pelley: clearly, many people in the hall moved by the speech tonight. this race for president across the country is essentially tied. and now the conventions are over. barack obama and mitt romney begin a 61-day sprint to the election. they will stop three times along the way to debate, and with the race tied as we said, those debates will be critical. the first is four weeks from now in denver. there will be more about

[ cheers and applause ] >> the parties faithful asking president obama to lead this nation for another four years and president obama asked the country for a chance to do just that, accepting the nomination for a second term in the white house. >> did tonight's speech convince voters he's the right guy for the job in 2012. gary nurenberg joins us. >> reporter: much of this day was spent dedicated to veterans and the military who said they did not receive enough respect at the republican convention last week. we have highlights and full remarks of the president's comment on wusa9.com. but in his remarks, the president said the country had made much progress and disaster facing the country four years ago said it will take years more to fix and argued that he is best suited to finish the job. he was introduced by the first lady. >> barack obama. [ cheers and applause ]. >> reporter: the choice, he says, is a choice. >> and on every issue, the

choice you face won't be just between two candidates for the party. it will be a choice between two different paths for america. a choice between two fundamentally different visions for the future. >> reporter: and charting the future, he said, may require less news from the past. >> and the kind of bold persistent experimentation that franklin roosevelt pursued during the only crisis worse than this one. and, by the way, those of us who carry on his party's legacy should remember that not every problem can be remedied with another government program or dictate from washington. >> reporter: the president listed goals in his speech, if not a detailed plan, to reduce the deficit by more than $4 trillion. create a million new manufacturing jobs by the end of 2016, double exports by the end of 2014, cut net oil imports in half by 2012. cut the growth of college tuition in half. recruit 100,000 math and science teachers over the next 10 years. train 2 million workers for jobs

at community colleges. and a distinction he wants clear. >> i refuse to ask middle class families to give up their deductions for owning a home or raising their kids just to pay for another millionaire's tax cuts. [ cheers and applause ] >> reporter: the vice president said the country is getting better because of his job. >> because of the decision he has made and the incredible spend to the american people, america has turned the corner. >> reporter: wounded former congresswoman gabrielle giffords. >> barack obama is the kind of leader my father wrote about in profiles and courage. >> reporter: 2004 nominee john carey on foreign policy. >> ask osama bin laden if he is better off now than he was four years ago. >> reporter: well, conventions over. game on. effective speeches, if anyone was paying attention. last night's speech by bill clinton, cnn's coverage was tied by the learning show here comes honey boo boo. both candidates will spend the next two months to get the undecided to pay attention. >> let's hope that happens, gary. there's a lot at stake. last week we invited a group to watch mitt romney's address. tonight we invited republicans to our studios. still ahead, they weigh in on the president's speech. well, one republican who did not plan on watching tonight's speech, mitt romney. he spent the day up in new

hampshire surprising a group of veterans who work on the phones for him. >> these veterans are not happen and they're working to make -- happy and they're working to make sure the public knows the president didn't keep his promise. >> i want this path instead of that path. i want the opportunities with society with the safety net, the pack of prosperity. >> well, tomorrow both mitt romney and president obama will be campaigning in new hampshire. new tonight at 11:00, police opened fire sending one person to the hospital. it happened in district heights maryland at county road and fosner street. matt jablow was there and he talks about how the shooting unfolded. >> reporter: police have not given out much information so far, but here is what we know.

it happened right around 6:00. a police involved shooting that ended with one man, not a police officer, in the hospital. apparently with a gunshot wound. his condition is not known right now. we also don't know exactly what led to the shooting. a neighbor told me what she saw and heard. >> and i was in the house and i heard two gunshots. my husband was already outside and i ran outside to see what happened and i saw like from what he told me it was a police officer firing -- they were firing back and forth and a police car -- another police car came from back up, and i saw the or four police coming out. >> reporter: once again, one man is in the hospital with a gunshot wound after a police involved shooting here in district heights. we do not know the man's condition nor do we know exactly what led to the shooting. just as soon as we have any more information, we will be sure to pass it along. derek and anita. >> thank you, matt.

well, also new tonight at 11:00, a daring armed robbery at a church, and it's all caught on camera. and now police are looking for the public's help to find the gun toting robber. ken molestina is live with the images that were caught. ken, what do you see? >> this was both. it was daring and it's up to congregation shocked. it happened on the first of the month and now police are releasing video. >> reporter: the crook cam was rolling outside stevens street northwest. the man with the backpack is the 26-year-old victim. the suspect runs behind him, up the steps and right into the church. >> it's a terrible thing to happen at the church. >> reporter: the thug made off with the man's bag, money, wallet and smart phone. but not before ordering the victim to the ground and pointing his gun at him and at least one other person inside according to police. >> it's a disgrace. i can't believe that somebody would do something like that. >> reporter: now investigators are hoping the public recognizes this young arms robber and turns

him in. meanwhile, parisianers are left unrattled. >> we have to be desperate, you know, hurting people to do something like that. >> thankfully no shots were fired and no one was hurt. the cops are offering $10,000 of reward money to anyone who can help him catch this guy. if you have any details, call the police. an 84-year-old woman beaten, robbed, left on the floor of her apartment for more than 24 hours. she only got help when a neighbor heard her crying out. now, this all happened last february in suitland and tonight we can tell you police have caught somebody. his name rodney william blanton. he's 56 years old. how did they find him? the bitten bit her attacker on the hand in that struggle and police say from a drop of blood, the dna led them to their man. another nice spot in prince george's county now under lock and key closed by the county as

part of its crusade against what it considers nuisance nights clubs. the target this time, the rendezvous banquet hall. the permit that allows large gatherings has run out and a recent assault call here got their attention. >> we have had fights and different things of that nature. calls for service for us. >> now, this is the latest shut down since the passage last year of prince george's county dance hall bill that is going to close clubs where violence is a issue. drew peterson is headed to prison. today he was found guilty of murdering his third wife. crowds outside the courthouse cheered after the verdict was announced this afternoon. kathleen savio's body was found in her bathtub in 2004. her death was issued an accident. it was reclassified after peterson's fourth wife disappeared in 2007.

authorities presumed stacy peterson is dead. her body has never been found. >> it's the first step to put away. maybe somebody will come forward that maybe knows something about my sister and they feel safe now that they've come forward now that he's put away. >> drew peterson facing up to 60 years when he's sentenced. we have breaking news for you out of a high school in hyattsville. according to the washington post, five football players have been yanked from the program. according to one of the parents, players hired prostitutes from a call service in north carolina. some even engaged in sex at a teen hotel. all this following the team's season opening victory last night. well, a heated night on the field between the nationals and at cubs. a pitch aimed right at bryce harper and it emptied both dugouts. we'll have the rest. what happens when you have an angry, vengeful ex? just ask that guy. the stunt that ended with the

fbi pulling their guns on him on a plane. we're looking at a little fog developing overnight. here is the wakeup weather. it will be a dry commute. even dry in fredericksburg tomorrow. in the 70s by 7:00. and then 9:00, 76-83. we'll come back and talk about the prospect of storms tomorrow and a much better prospect about the weekend. we'll tell you what day will be better.

a birth here in washington dc. an elderly man passed away and he is now one of the 87 people killed this year by the disease. now, one way to protect yourself from west nile, you have to stop those mosquitoes and that can mean removing the standing water from around your home because that is their breeding ground. well, home from the hospital tonight, an elderly woman attacked by a beaver that was sick with rabies. the beaver from hell is what she calls it. 83-year-old lillian peterson was bitten tuesday night while she was out takingm in lake bar crawl in falls church. >> i kept aiming at his eyes thinking that if i knocked his eyes out he wouldn't be able to see. all i wanted to do is get rid of the [ bleep ] and that was it. >> it was pretty tough out there. in fact, lillian says if it wasn't for a friend of hers who

was right nearby and came to her rescue with an orr to beat her down, she might not be alive. she's facing several more rounds of painful rabies shot. as for the beaver, it's gone on to beaver heaven. they did kill it. but just the same, lillian says she is never going in that lake again. >> what an experience. new tonight at 11:00, how far would you go to get a former lover in trouble? well, one woman went way, way too far and now she's facing federal charges. it all started when authorities say a call was made that somebody on a u.s. airways flight from philly to dallas had explosives. the pilot told everyone there was a mechanical problem and then turned the plane around. that's when fbi agents got on the plane and pulled christopher shell off. >> they pulled their ooze ees out and pistols and came to the passenger and said don't move, stay put, and they took him off the plane. >> he just acted stunned. he just said what -- you know,

what the bleep is going on. but he was not nervous. >> well, here is what was going on. shell was the target of an apparent hoax. cbs news as learned his ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend wanted to make his life miserable. it looks like they did that and it was caused as a major headaches for themselves. both of them are being questioned by federal authorities over this hoax. do you have a need for speed? head on down to texas. it will soon be home to a stretch of highway with the highest speed limit in the nation. it will be 85 miles an hour. is it safe? >> of course it's not safe. but if you want to go 85, you're not thinking about being safe. >> have you ever been through texas? if you don't go 85, you'll never be seen again. >> you mean you'll never make it across the street. >> that means for a speed camera, it's 9 a. 5 [ laughing ] . a little patchy fog tomorrow morning. let's start with a live look outside. our michael and son weather cam. we're looking at 84 was only the high but it's only 74 now. dew points are right around 70 which is just not comfortable. winds south, southwest at 7. pressure rising a little bit to 9.94 inches of of mercury. satellite picture radar combined, we'll zoom in. you can't really see a clear line of showers and storms here out in the midwest, but we do see some showers and storms to the south of us. and, yes, unfortunately charlotte would have been okay tonight. but tough call. most of the activity across eastern carolina. a couple showers back in ohio. they're going to die out. we're in pretty good shape as we go through the night. and most of tomorrow. just a slight chance of an isolated shower tomorrow. best chance will be saturday with the front and right now it looks like most of those showers will be in the afternoon. that's what we're thinking. so patchy fog early. mr. bernstein will be in here

bright and early at 5:25. but the morning commute will be dry and we're looking at a hot and humid day with an isolated thunderstorm and the main event by far and away will be saturday. many more storms saturday with the front. the good news is it will pay dividends. the frontal system will trigger showers and storms on saturday, but it will sweep out the tropical air mass on sunday. that's a good thing. overnight, partly cloudy, humid. some patchy dense fog. low 68-74. winds out of the southwest at 10. now, by morning partly cloudy. very warm and humid. you'll need your sunglasses tomorrow. a lot more sun tomorrow than we had today. temperatures in the 70s and 80s with light winds. and then by afternoon, we're going to close the week on a hot note and humid note. isolated thunderstorm. high temperatures around 90 and winds out of the southwest at about 10. to we'll break it down for you. a little bit of fog in the morning. 68-76. and then warm by noon. we're in the low to mid 80s by noon and 87 and 91 by evening with a chance of a thunderstorm.

next three days we're going to go code yellow tomorrow. certainly code yellow on saturday. 91 just an isolated storm tomorrow. scattered storms on saturday. 86. and then code greenery freshing. refresh -- green refreshing. refreshing. highs 70s and 80s. the cooler air stays around for a while. upper 70s on monday which is kind of nice. timing of the football season. we'll be watching football on sunday. it will feel like fall. very nice. warm up a little next week but not uncomfortably low. mid 80s on tuesday and thursday but not humid. we're finally getting rid of the human air mass that's been sitting on us for about a week. >> we could have a long, late, non-humid summer. >> that would be nice. >> sometimes fall works out that way. >> it could work out like that and work out with no snow. >> hey, now, don't go crazy. we have a blog on the website. no suspense regarding the reaction to president obama's speech. of course they loved it. he was preaching to the choir. but here we had the choir from

the other church. a group of republicans gathered to pass judgment on the words of mr. obama. and the question of the hour, just like last week, could he change any minds? in charlotte, the crowd was fired up in anticipation of president obama. but here in our wusa9 viewing center, that feeling in the air is skepticism. >> as of right now, i think he's doing a mediocre job at best. >> but our local republicans seemed more disappointed than hostile. >> so many were captured by hope and change. and now that we're graduates, it's not very hopeful. >> i feel a sense of disappointment and overwhelming sentiment from the hope and change mentality. >> there's not a chance i'm going to vote for him, but i'm open to hear what he says. >> but once he began to speak, our gop friends seemed a tad less friendly. [ laughing ] >> even bursting into laughter every time the president

mentioned cutting the debt. others just seemed bored. >> i was disappointed honestly. i think at this point he's pandering for votes that he knows he's not going to get. he didn't really provide any sort of outline for a plan for our future. anything really positive. it was just words. >> just words. apparently that's exactly how the group felt. and at the end of the night, they said no. no minds have been changed. so that's what happened last week with the democrats. that's what happened this week with the republicans, which i guess is an interesting sort of display of how this electorate is. everybody has already made up their minds. anita. >> that's why the few independents are so important. >> making all of the difference. every thursday we bring you the restaurant report that can turn your stomach. russ ptacek brings you information about restaurants busted for violations. because of the national convention, we'll be bringing it to you tomorrow night. we'll be right back with sports.
