[ applause ] captioning funded by cbs this is the "cbs morning news" for friday, september 7, 2012. good morning everybody. happy friday. good to be with you. i'm terrell brown. this morning president obama hits the campaign trail fighting to keep his job with just 61 days until the election. last night he accepted the democratic nomination for a second term asking for more time to fix the nation's problems. mr. obama told the convention crowd that this country's problems can can be solved but the task won't be easy. susan mcginnis is covering the convention in charlotte this morning. susan, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, terrell. talking to folks here who were at the convention. so many said he revived the

excitement of four years ago. the question is, did he win over those who he inspired then who have since become disillusioned. the crowd was on their feet as president obama took the stage to make it official. >> i accept your nomination for president of the united states. >> he says this election isn't just about him. he says it's a choice. >> on every issue, the choice you face won't just be between two candidates or two parties. it will be a choice between two different paths for america. >> and the president says the republicans have only one path. >> have a surplus? try a tax cut. deficit too high? try another. field a cold coming on? take two tax cuts, roll back some regulations and call us in the morning. >> in his acceptance speech, vice president biden stuck to the line which has almost become a catch phrase for him. >> osama bin laden is dead and general motors is alive. >> democrats hope the energy and momentum of these last three

has more on the speech. >> last night in the democratic national convention, barack obama made his case for reelection. now, he laid out a vision in which democrats stand for americans all being in it together, whereas republicans stand for you being on your own. it was not the lofty speech w saw in 2008 about hope and change and it was not the fresh faced perrmance from 2004. this was a candidate who had to make the case based on his record and not just his potential. he only mentioned mitt romney once but he certainly took a number of shots at his opponent and certainly, we're going to see the democrats creating contrast with the republicans from here on out. president obama head back out on the campaign trail, he's hitting three states, new hampshire, iowa and florida and the next big moment in this will be the debates in october. i'm brian montopoli in charlotte for cbs news. even before the president spoke, the romney campaign reacted. taking the administration to task for failing to create enough jobs. the romney campaign released a

new ad scheduled to run in eight swing states. >> this president can ask us to be patient, this president can tell us it was someone else's fault but this president cannot tell us that you're better off today than when he took office. >> romney rye mains in new hampshire preparing for debates. his running mate campaigned in california and colorado about big government. >> their convention actually began with a tribute to big government. they actually said, government is the only thing we all belong to. >> ryan said he and mitt romney won't duck the tough issues and they will fix the "mess in washington." ryan campaigns in nevada today. the economy and jobs are the central theme of campaign 2012. today the government releases its jobs report for last month. yesterday's numbers were better than expected. weekly applications for unemployment benefits fell by 12,000, down to 365,000. there are varied estimates on today's report. adp estimates there were 201,000

jobs added in august, but a survey of economists say employers added 135,000 jobs. the unemployment rate stands at 8.3 ers. over the last two weeks of conventions, we've heard a lot of promises, accusations and finger pointing to from political leaders, but last night we caught a glimpse of something that can inspire the nation. gabrielle giffords, the former representative from arizona, took the stage. she was a little shaky, but former congresswoman gabrielle giffords walked out on the charlotte stage under her own power. giffords was guided by her close friend, congresswoman and democratic party chair, debbie wasserman schultz. when she reached center stage, giffords led the audience in reciting the pledge of allegiance. >> i pledge allegiance to the flag of the united states of america and to the republic for

[ applause ] >> giffords was shot in the head in an attack that left six other people dead in january of 2011. she spent the last year and a half learning how to walk and talk again. the appearance brought back memories of last august when giffords made a surprise visit to the capitol to vote on raising the debt ceiling. lawmakers from both parties rose to their feet giving her a lengthy ovation. giffords resigned from congress this year but helped her former aid, ron barber, win a special election for her seat. ron barber was one of those wounded in the shooting. giffords launched a political action committee. they will support democratic candidates dedicated to compromise and bipartisanship. "moneywatch" time on a friday. market rally on action by europe's bank to ease the

eurozone crisis. where is the fastest highway in the country. ashley morrison noise. >> yeah, the one i take into work. investors around the world seemed to like what they heard from the president of the central bank. mario draghi announced plans to buy bonds. it's expected to draw down borrowing rates. asian markets soared. the nikkei added more than 2%. its biggest one-day percentage gain in five months. while hong kong's hang seng rose 3%. the bond buying program sparked a banner day. the dow jones added 244 points to close at its highest point since 2007 before the great recession began. the nasdaq was up 66 points. amazon's trying to get a jump on the holiday shopping season. on thursday, the company unveiled four new kindle fire tablet computers. they feature bigger screens and they start at $299.

the national hurricane center says there's a 40% chance it could redevelop into another tropical storm. forecasters say remnant of the massive storm are sitting in the gulf of mexico. if isaac reforms, he will become a she and become tropical storm nadine. bermuda is getting ready for hurricane leslie. it's about 430 miles south of the island with sustained winds of 75 miles per hour. forecasters say it's expected to get stronger today and pass east of bermuda possibly as a category 2 hurricane with winds of 125 miles per hour. a missouri bishop has been found guilty of failing to report suspected child abuse to authorities. robert finn is the first american bishop to be charged in the clergy sex abuse scandal. he received two years of probation thursday but acquitted on a second point. the priest he covered for pled guilty last month to child pornography charges. prosecutors are asking he spend the rest of his life behind bars. attorneys for drew peterson say they're going to appeal his conviction.

the former police officer was found guilty thursday of killing his third wife. but his lawyers say the deck was stacked against their client because of a new law dubbed drew's law. they say the law, the first of its kind in illinois history, allows peterson's wives to speak from the grave. bigad shaban explains. >> crowds cheered in the streets of joliet, illinois, after a chained drew peterson was convicted of murdering his third wife, kathleen savio. her family was in tears speaking outside the courthouse. >> finally somebody heard kathleen's cry. 12 people did the right thing. thank god, she won today. it's her victory. >> finally received justice. it has been for a very long time in coming. >> savio was found dead in her home in a dry bathtub more than eight years ago. but the prosecution considered that crime scene part of a cover-up. >> who falls into a bathtub with no water and drowns? >> her death was initially ruled as an accident. but in 2007, the case was reopened after peterson's fourth

wife, stacy peterson went missing. savio's body was resumed and her death reclassified as a homicide. drew peterson was never charged in stacy's death. after more than five weeks of testimony and a day and a half of jury deliberations, the former illinois police chief was found guilty of murdering savio. >> he was a thug. he would threaten people because he had a gun and april badge. and nobody ever took him on. we took him on now and he lost. an illinois state law passed as a result of the trial allowed the prosecution to include an unusual amount of circumstantial evidence, including testimony from the friend of kathleen savio who said kathleen told her a story about how drew threatened her at knifepoint. >> it's a dark day in america when you can convict somebody on hearsay evidence. >> peterson, now 58 years oiled, could face up to 60 years behind bars when he's sentenced next month. bigad shaban, cbs news, los angeles. coming up, your friday morning weather, and the they
