good morning. 11 years ago today that al qaeda terrorists hijacked airliners into new york, waeshington, anda fourth jet in pennsylvania. both the obama and romney campaigns have suspended television ads for the day. susan mcginnis has more. >> reporter: the nation will pause today to remember the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. ceremonies will take place in new york, virginia, and pennsylvania. the events start at the pentagon, where a ceremony will be held early this morning with the u.s. flag unfurled over the side of the building at sunrise. president obama will attend a wreath-laying ceremony here later this morning. in new york monday night, the new freedom tower was lit up in red, white, and blue. at its base, the world trade center memorial. today, the names of each victim of the twin towers attacks will be read aloud by their families.

and in shanksville, virginia, monday, leon panetta toured the memorial with united flight 93 went down. at sunset, 40 luminaries lit the wall. vice president biden will attend ceremonies there later this morning. and good news for visitors to the 9/11 memorial in new york. a dispute over how to fund construction of a museum on the memorial grounds was resolved monday night. >> we feel the public is so needing this complimentary experience to the memorial. >> reporter: construction begins at the end of the month. >> that was susan mcginnis reporting this morning. important news for tens of thousands of first responders who worked at the world trade center site and were exposed to toxic chemicals. the government added some 50 types of cancer. >> reporter: for three years, firefighter ray pfeiffer has been saying the hundreds of

hours he worked had something to do with his advanced kidney cancer. >> it's like vindication, saying hey listen, we recognize that we were down there, we did get sick from down there, and it's a little bit of relief. >> reporter: last year, the world trade center health program was granted $1.5 billion over five years to treat and monitor about 40,000 people who worked in toxic conditions following the atax. the program covers asthma, chronic cough as well as post traumatic stress disorder and depression. but until now, not cancer. the decision adds a wide range of dancers to the official roster of world trade center related health conditions. the list includes cancer of the lung, breast, and colon, as well as leukemia and lymphoma. although cheered by first responder groups, the decision comes without additional financing. t.j. gilmore is a mason who worked on the pile. >> a lot of guys have died since

we started. we're not going to give up. we'll have to go back to washington again and put some more money into the fund. >> reporter: each year, he hosts a gathering for some of the men he worked with. >> a lot of people have gotten sick. cops, firemen, construction workers. they need to be recognized as well. >> reporter: it's not been proven that toxic exposure can cause all these cancers, but 70 known and possible carcinogens were present in that toxic plume, so the panel is giving the first responders the benefit of the doubt. leon panetta says a book by the navy seal who took part in the osama bin laden raid sets a bad precedent. the book written by a seal was not vetted by the defense department and panetta told nora o'donald that's a big concern. >> people who are part of that operation who commit themselves to the promise that they will not reveal the sensitive

operations and not publish anything without bringing it through the pentagon so that we can ensure that it doesn't reveal sensitive information. when they fail to do that, we have got to make sure that they stand by the promise they made to this country. >> more of nora o'donnell's interview later on "cbs this morning." al qaeda's second in command in yemen was killed by an air strike. he and six companions were killed by a missile in southern yemen yesterday. the missiles they believe were fired by an unmanned u.n. drone. he spent six years in guantanamo bay. another prisoner died at the guantanamo bay prison. u.s. officials say the man was found unconscious. it's unclear what caused his death. he was from yemen, the ninth detainee to die at guantanamo bay since it opened back in 2002. to politics now. former president bill clinton will campaign on behalf of president obama today in florida. he'll speak at florida

an emergency has been declared in central washington state. several major fires are burning there. the barker canyon fire has burned over 14,000 acres. some 60 homeowners have been ordered to evacuate. in idaho, more than 500 firefighters are battling the mcguire fire. it's burned over 20,000 acres and is threatening more than 620 buildings and homes. also in wyoming about a thousand residents very warned they may have to be evacuated. a wildfire burning near jackson. a u.s. panel is standing by its recommendation that healthy women should not get routinely screened for ovarian cancer because the tests do more harm than good. the united states preventative task force made that same recommendation in 2004. it released new findings monday after conducting a larger clinical trial. ovarian cancer is the fifth leading cause of cancer death among women. it is day two of the chicago teachers strike. educators took to the picket line monday over performance evaluations for laid off teachers.

the school board and teachers union are scheduled to meet again today, but right now neither side appears ready to budge. >> 28% of the teaching staff being in the firing line that way, that will stress our teaching corps and not help it. >> i'm not going to allow another generation to go on the shortest school day and the shortest school year. i'm not going to allow another generation to go that doesn't make sure we make improvements in our most rigorous curriculum. >> this is the first time in 25 years chicago teachers have gone on strike. wednesday and thursday. on monday, the fed reported that americans cut back on their credit card use in august for a second straight month. on wall street, the dow lost 52 points while the nasdaq was down 32. general motors is disputing a report that it is losing as much as $49,000 on each chevy volt it builds. according to estimates provided to reuters by industry analysts and manufacturing experts, it costs as much as $89 to build a single volt. the base price for the plug-in hybrid vehicle is just under $40,000. year-to-date sales for the volt are far below expectations and the plant that makes the car will halt production for four weeks. gm admits it is losing money on the volt, but it calls the reuters estimate "grossly wrong." more and more americans are pulling the plug on watching tv the old fashioned way. according to the nielsen company, about five million homes no longer receive tv

world trade center following the attacks will be covered by health benefits if they are stricken with cancer. police in wisconsin have released dash cam video of the white supremacist who opened fire at a temple last month. when he came out of the temple, he opened fire on police. >> reporter: video from a squad car camera shows the final seconds of last month's shooting at a temple in oak creek, wisconsin. brian murphy arrives at the temple responding to a 911 call. when the gunman wade michael page exits the temple, he and lieutenant murphy spot each other and open fire. lieutenant murphy is shot in the throat and crawls behind a car for cover. the gunman keeps firing, shooting murphy 15 times. one round goes through another car's window, but murphy survives. just then, officer sam lindle pulls up. >> saw the individual coming at me.

it's just something that i had a sense that this was not right. the way he was marching at me was an aggressive manner. >> reporter: rifle in hand, lindle gets out of the car and yells to the gunman 75 feet away. a bullet strikes his windshield, and officer linda waits no longer. the gunman falls to the ground, but fires one more time, killing himself. >> from what we've seen now already, we know he was on a mission to cause havoc. he had to be stopped and that's why i decided to shoot at that time. >> reporter: linda says he's no hero. >> i'm just an officer who did my job. no different than the other 200-some officers that responded that day. no better, no worse. >> reporter: oak creek's police chief says linda's actions prevented even more people from being killed. the woman accused of pointing a gun at the south carolina congressman has been ordered to undergo a mental
