>> the strongest language possible, president barack obama condemns the deadly attack on a u.s. consulate in libya that claimed the life of a u.s. ambassador and three staffers. thank you for joining us. i'm jc hayward. the u.s. ambassador killed in that attack has ties to our area. 52-year-old jay christopher stevens owns a home in chevy chase, maryland, and he served as the u.s. ambassador to libya. it is believed that a mob carried out the attack following the release of a film ridiculing islam's prophet muhammad. we get more information now from danielle nottingham. >> reporter: chris stevens, the u.s. ambassador to libya, was killed as the american consulate came under attack in benghazi. u.s. officials confirm stevens, information officer shawn smith and two other americans were killed as they tried to evacuate staff members from the complex. >> make no mistake, we will

work with the libyan government to bring to justice the killers who attacked our people. >> reporter: gunmen armed with automatic weapons stormed the consulate overnight. the mob of mostly conservative muslims was protesting an american made film that they believe insults islam's prophet muhammad. >> this is an attack that should shock the conscience of people of all faiths. >> reporter: stevens was a career diplomat who had already served to hours in lybia. >> he risked his life to stop a tyrant. then gave his life trying to help build a better libya. >> reporter: the unrest started in cairo, egypt where demonstrators scaled the wall of the u.s. embassy and tore down the american flag all in the name of religion. republican white house hopeful mitt romney accused the obama administration of sending mixed signals about condemning the attacks. >> possibly the administration was wrong to stand by a statement sympathizing with

those who had breached our embassy in egypt egypt instead of condemning their actions. >> reporter: in benghazi, the remains of the u.s. consulate were still smoldering this morning with burned out cars scattered across the compound. danielle nottingham, cbs news, the state department. >> as we mentioned earlier, stevens owns a home on western avenue in chevy chase, maryland. because of his job, he rarely stayed there. instead he rented out the house. a person living there who did not want to appear on camera says that the ambassador was a great guy who loved to play tennis and loved pets. professionally stevens has spent most of his career in foreign service. before serving as ambassador to libya, he served as deputy principle officer in jerusalem and prior to that he was an international trade lawyer based here in washington. he was born and raised in california. he earned his law degree from the university of california in

1989. we are continuing to follow the latest developments on the attack at the u.s. consulate in libya. for the latest information, go to our website wusa9.com. five people were injured after a crash involving a metro bus and an suv. this was the scene just before 7:00 this morning of the we're told that the injuries are not serious and police are still investigating this crash. as the hunt continues for the gunman who shot and killed a prince george's county high school student, friends and family grapple to try and make sense of this killing. 18-year-old marckel norman ross was a junior at central high school in capitol heights. his body was found yesterday morning on old central avenue. kristin fisher has the latest on the investigation. she's outside central high school. >> reporter: jc, prince george's county police say they still have no suspects and no

motive. marckel ross was just walking to school, his regular route a mile and a half long. he was coming to central high school when he was shot and killed on the sidewalk just a mile away from here. his books and backpack scattered across the roadway. >> it was -- [indiscernible] people were crying. >> reporter: students at central high school walked the same walk that their classmate was killed on just one day ago. but many parents say today they opted to drive their kids to school instead. >> this just happened yesterday. i think for at least the rest of the week, there should be more police presence. >> reporter: marckel ross was an honor student, a member of rotc and a popular modeling club but his mother said he wasn't always that popular. when he moved here in 2009, she said her son was bullied, even gotten into several fights at school. now she can't help wonder if that bullying may have contributed to her son's murder. >> en you have children that go to school, they're smart,

everybody likes them, they enter all type of activities and then you have the kids on the side that's smoking the drugs and very, very unfortunate and those are the ones that come after the other children. >> reporter: this is the second time in less than a month that an honor student at a prince george's county public high school has been murdered. remember amber stanley? she was shot and killed in her own bedroom and that case is still wide open. prince george's county police say at this point they do not believe that these two crimes are connected. in capital height action i'm kristin fisher, 9news now. >> prince george's county police are asking for our help. if you have any information, please call crime solvers at 1- 866-411-tips. well, montgomery county is pulling more than 300 police cruisers off the street because of steering problems. mechanics at a shop on seven locks road have been working around the clock in order to make the repairs. in two separate incidents, officers tried to turn the

apple is set to unveil another trinket in the tech world. bigad shaban is in san francisco where the company is expected to introduce its newest smartphone. >> reporter: apple got dressed up for the occasion transforming a san francisco theater for its media event where the company is expected to take the wraps off the iphone 5. it's the biggest launch since the death of

c.e.o. steve jobs and tech experts predict some significant changes. >> the big one is a larger screen, something that's taller. also 4g. this is the faster wireless networking technology. >> reporter: analysts are also expecting a design change in the connector ditching the 30 pin model. that could frustrate those who invested in accessories. >> we invested a lot of money buying this product and you want to be able to use them. i would discourage apple from doing it. >> reporter: these apple events are still big news. reporters have come from around the world for a look at the newest iphone, but the stakes are high for a company that once dominated the smartphone market. when apple first unveiled the iphone five years ago, it was in a class of its own. the company sold nearly 250 million of them helping turn apple into the most valuable company on earth. but rivals have been gaining ground. now apple is looking for a home run. >> the 4s is really the iphone 4 with a couple of internal tweaks. you couldn't really tell the

life, laughter and wisdom. >> god has been good to me very g. he left me with a few marbles. >> reporter: more than a knew many would say -- more than a few many would say. spunky and feisty and sharp as a tack, alice dickson shows no signs of slowing down. she is the oldest resident at the v.a. medical center which has a nursing home wing. you can see the staff threw a celebration for her. it was a big party for a woman with an even bigger sense of humor. she loves telling jokes. at 31, she entered the u.s. army as one of the first  african-american women, something she never really thought much about. >> i thought i was just as good as everybody else. if they said anything to me, i said the hell with you, sorry. >> reporter: she joined after she was diagnosed with having a skin condition that causes loss of pigment. >> i thought the army knew all the answers. i said, i'll join the army and let them move those spots.

i was crying. i said, can you move those spots? they said, you don't have to move them. you're going to be white. i said you mean they got me mixed up? >> reporter: to keep her mind sharp, she reads "the washington post" every morning. >> you have to find out what's going on. you don't want to be here to be stupid. >> reporter: she puts on her makeup every day, likes her jewelry, and still enjoys getting her nails done. and she's in good health but she did lose her leg several years ago to an infection. >> if i had another leg, i'd dance for you. >> reporter: she has lived a full life and she shared with us why she believes she has been so blessed for so long. >> help everybody. you can't take it with you. so share it. you live a long time. that's why god let me live. i shared everything. >> reporter: in northwest d.c., annie hong, 9news now. >> she is gorgeous. happy birthday, miss dickson. she spent about 30 years working at the pentagon as a

in the suburbs. i don't think we'll be as cool as we have been the last couple of mornings like the 45 in frederick or 46 in winchester but we'll see a couple, just a couple of 40s. this morning la plata even down to 49. tappahannock airport 48. looking at temperatures as of noon, they've rebounded nicely to 77 in easton. annapolis is 75. it's 71 up in hagerstown. culpeper and fredricksburg enjoying a beautiful 77 degrees. as we look outside on our michael & son weather cam, very, very clear out. we're looking north up wisconsin avenue toward friendship heights and bethesda. i was seeing right here in the distance a little haze but looks like sugarloaf there. that's 30-plus miles away. what a beautiful day we've got going on. temperature 75 degrees with sunny skies. south winds 8 miles an hour and your humidity at 50%. another beautiful day across the region. but that's not going to last but a couple more. got a cold front coming across the country.

this big storm is bringing in cooler air. temperatures this morning were in the 30s in bismarck. you'll notice the rain moving into southern minnesota. eight coming out of colorado. it is a chilly day. they're only in the 40s right now in denver. they're only going to be in the upper 50s for highs. out ahead of that front, though, temperatures in chicago are going to make a run toward 90. for us, we have high pressure nearby. still suppressing the cloud cover, keeping us nice and dry. but as the high pulls away, winds become a little more southerly. that's going to bring in a little bit more moisture over the next couple of daitz. as we show you -- couple of days. as we show you the future cast action all will be quiet today and tomorrow. tomorrow we'll see some of that moisture try to approach the carolina coast. all sunny on thursday. but by friday, a few more clouds friday morning. some showers trying to approach the delmarva. we've got that front out to the west. so we may see a couple of showers into the mountains here by friday afternoon, maybe even getting toward hagerstown. but i think a better chance with this front in the neighborhood will be saturday to see a couple of showers.

but all in all, we're still looking really, really nice, at least for the rest of the workweek and i think sunday will be pretty good as well. so as we look at the forecast, today about 82. a great day with the low humidity. winds southeast 5 to 10. tonight 6 can for d.c. low 50s north and west with fairly light winds. tomorrow 83. friday a few more clouds. maybe that late day shower, especially in the mountains. 83 degrees. saturday could have a couple of showers and storms, 82. again maybe 30, 40% on saturday. sunday is looking like the better day of the weekend. late monday another system approaches but i think tuesday is going to be the wetter day. by then, temperatures could be staying in the upper 70s. stick around. we are going into the kitchen. we've got some good seafood coming up when 9news now at noon returns.

today i'm one on one with our chef ann from johnny's half shell located 400 north capitol street. i love crab. i love crabs more than anything else. i just love crabs. she's got a dish -- these are real crabs. are you putting it on ice? >> i do that because what i'm going to do is break down the crab really quickly. and i need it to calm down. the cold water makes it feel like it's wintertime to dig into the mud. they essentially get kind of sleepy and much easier to work

with. right now i'm going to remove the back shell. >> this crab summit that you're having, you're specializing in crab dishes at the restaurant. >> we're specializing in this crab dish. this crab dish is very beloved. it is a regional specialty from texas. this is a texas preparation of crab. so we call it the summit because the combination of the best crabs in the country which of course come from maryland. a really interesting technique from another part of the world and one i'm familiar with. >> you took the back shell off. >> now i'm taking off the gills. >> you don't want to eat that. that's not good. >> i'm going to take off the entire interior. >> these are blue crabs. >> these are large blue crabs. it's been a great season for them. they're very heavy this year. i think the warm winter was helpful. then he just cut did in half. -- then i just cut it in half.
