and an elite unit of u.s. marines are on their way to assist with security. danielle nottingham has the latest. >> reporter: protesters climbed the gates of the u.s. embassy in yemen's capital. they burned tires and threw rocks expressing outrage over an anti-muslim film on youtube. embassy officials say all americans are safe. secretary of state hillary clinton says the u.s. is closely watching the unfolding demonstrations. >> we certainly hope and expect that there will be steps taken to avoid violence. >> reporter: in iraq, more unrest. demonstrators in baghdad torched an american flag and in cairo, egypt, police used tear gas to hold back thousands of angry protesters. secretary of state hillary clinton said again today there is no justification for violence, but also addressed the video. >> we absolutely reject its

content and message. >> reporter: tuesday night violence at the u.s. consulate in benghazi, libya left four americans dead, including ambassador chris stevens. u.s. officials are trying to sort out what if any role the protests against the film may have played or whether a terrorist group with ties to al qaeda organized the attack. american investigators are already in benghazi and now two u.s. war ships and an elite unit of the u.s. marines are on their way to assist with security. danielle nottingham, cbs news, the state department. the film behind these protests is called "innocence of muslims." it is an amateur movie made in california. it portrays the prophet muhammad as a fool and it has sexually explicit situations. the movie was posted to youtube on july 1. then two months later it was aired on an egypt then talk show known for

killing jobs. it's one more reason why it's essential for us to cut back on the size of the federal government and live within our means. i will get america on track to a balanced budget. it's essential to getting the job growth we need. >> we were listening live to republican presidential candidate mitt romney who is in fairfax, virginia right now talking about how he's going to get the country back on track economically. by the way, first lady michele obama is going to be in virginia today. we're going to have more on both parties, how they're campaigning tonight on 9news now beginning at 5:00 p.m. it's what wall street calls fed day. the day that the federal reserve announces its latest policy decisions. invepsors are waiting to -- investors are waiting to hear whether the central bank will take new steps in order to revive the slumping economy. policymakers wrapped up their two-day meeting here in washington. later today federal reserve chairman ben bernanke will announce what steps he's going

to take to support the economy. >> so many times in the past, he'll intervene if necessary. so the markets are saying right now, with unemployment the way it is, with those jobs numbers that bad and revisions that bad, you have to intervene now. >> if the federal government does intervene, that could mean an extension on record low interest rates. remembering an american hero. neil armstrong's memorial service just wrapped up at the national cathedral. our kristin fisher was there. ♪ fly me to the moon ♪ and let me play among the stars ♪ >> how does one adequately express his feelings about a special friend? when that friend is also a world icon, a national hero of unimman ginnable proportion. >> reporter: the last man on

the moon pays tribute to the first man on the moon neil armstrong. >> no one could have accepted the responsibility of his remarkable accomplishment with more dignity and more grace than neil armstrong. >> reporter: more than 2,000 people filled the cathedral including former senator glon jen but outside before the service started, hundreds of people who haven't flew in space waited in long lines to get inside and say goodbye to this reluctant hero. the national cathedral itself actually holds a very special piece of neil armstrong history. inside is a stained glass window called the space window. it's also the cover of today's program because it was inspired by pictures taken during armstrong's apollo 11 mission. and at the very center of this small dot, it's actually a sliver of real moon rock that armstrong presented to the

right now i am honored to have with me the author hedrick smith. i heard earlier he was a pulitzer prize, a correspondent for the "new york times." he covered foreign policy for many years but he has a new book out called "who stole the american dream." he says america has turned into two americas. >> there's no question about it. >> what's the purpose of the book? >> like everybody else, i saw the middle class in trouble. people are foreclosed out of their homes, losing their jobs, worried whether their kids could have a good education

coorks they afford re-- education, could they afford retirement. how did we go from a country with middle class prosperity and good bipartisan politics to polarized politics, unequaled democracy and gaping inequalities in the economy. that's what i dug into. there actually was a rebellion. it starts with a guy you never would have imagined, louis powell, supreme court justice louis powell. >> why are you blaming him? >> i'm not just blaming him. he did it. he wrote a memo in 1971, two months before nixon put him on the supreme court. and he said america free enterprise is under assault from ralph nader, the consumer movement, government regulations. he talked about regulations of richard nixon. he didn't use his name. he said we've got to fight back. business has to organize. he said we've got to get tough. we've got to play hardball the

way the labor unions do. we have to organize our money and bring the corporations together. it set off an explosion. the u.s. chamber of commerce distributed nationwide to businesses. the chamber of commerce expanded its budget. business round table. now everybody takes it for granted today. it was formed three months after louis powell's memo. businesses expanded their offices lobbying here. then the business power came up when jimmy carter and the democrats were in charge in 19778. turned the whole thing -- 1978. turned the whole thing around. that was the beginning of the story. that was the business rebellion that began to steal the american dream from the middle class. >> oh, gosh. i want to ask you, you know, in a presidential election, an opinion? >> i'm not going to do that. this is not about the election. this is -- we're not going to get to a smart fix in this country unless we understand how we got in the trouble we're in. neither of these guys at the moment are telling you. we're not getting down to the bottom of this thing. this is about people out around

the country, in ohio n california, in washington state. it's about how the 401(k) program isn't working. it's about how people lost $6 trillion in their houses before the boom broke. it's about where we took it in the chin in the middle class. >> who sold the american dream. it's all in this book by hedrick smith. get a copy of it and see what he says. thank you for being with us. howard has the forecast next.

we have a follow-up on the montgomery county police cruisers and their steering problems. authorities are now telling us that eight of the 289 police cars have problems. in two separate incidents, officers turned the steering wheel of their crown victorias but the car kept going straight. mechanics plan to have the remaining 14 cars inspected sometime this weekend. if you think gasoline is expensive where you fill up, wait till you see this. this is a lukoil station in new jersey. regular grade gasoline is selling for $8.99 a gallon. premium gasoline selling for $9.49 a gallon. it's not because they pump it for you because sometimes when they pump it, it costs more. but a group of gas station owners raised their prices to

protest pricing rules by their corporate owners. the prices should be back to normal by this afternoon. that's incredible. another beaver infected with rabies went on an attack in fairfax county. a group of youngsters were at the hidden pond nature center on saturday, and a beaver ran after them. an animal control officer shot the beaver before it actually bit anyone. last week an 83-year-old woman was bitten by a rabid beaver while she was swimming in lake barcroft. animal control authorities tracked down and killed several beavers. they all tested positive for rabies. so we asked authorities is this a growing problem. >> we can't make that kind of assessment or statement that something's going on, but certainly when these types of things happen, we do take a look and we make note of them. >> on sunday a rabid raccoon turned up in the same neighborhood.

police believe infected raccoons are actually biting the beavers so they're warning everyone to be careful and watch your pets carefully. howard, the forecast? >> it's a beautiful day once again. the great week continues and looks like the weekend is going to be nice as well. the allergy count came in and the weeds and pollen were moderate. looking into the future, temperatures will be climbing toward the low 80s this afternoon. about 81 or so should do it for the highs. southeast winds at 5 to 10 miles per hour. we'll see if the -- we'll probably hit the high just before 5:00. by 7:00 in the mid-70s. looking good. you have outdoor plans, sports practice, just want to go for a walk, hey, do it. suburbs once again overnight in the 50s. could be a touch of fog. frederick got into the 40s there, had a little fog there and toward warrenton and

culpeper. annapolis still bay temperatures in the 70s. got a beautiful noon hour going on right now. mid-70s across the board. fredricksburg, culpeper 77. those are some of the warmer spots along with east tn across the bay -- easton across the bay. 75 at the tappahannock airport and a beautiful day all across the region. we have just been enjoying some lovely weather. and our michael & son weather cam looking in order again. you can just barely see on the horizon, i believe that's sugarloaf mountain in frederick county. a ways away but great visibility. sunny skies. 75 degrees with the humidity at 51%. so another comfortable day. but things are going to change a little bit. look at this in the northern and central part of the country. we have 50s and 60s. kansas city 57. denver 56. quite a front. 80 degrees at national out ahead of it. the front will come through us as we get into friday night, saturday morning. with the front we're seeing a lot of rain in texas all the way up toward wisconsin.

some cooler weather behind the front. they were once again in the 30s and 40s across the northern plains. but ahead of it, wins turn south and southwesterly. that's why we're talking about 80s, low 80s here the next couple of days. want to show you the futurecast. this front is going to be moisture starved. it will have a tough time producing much in the way of showers. we may see an isolated sprinkle in the mountains later today. tomorrow a touch of fog in the morning. maybe a sprinkle on the eastern shore and then the mountains as we get into the afternoon. but it should really be a partly sunny day. a few more clouds than what we've seen the last couple of days but a decent day. here comes the front. friday evening some showers make it down toward winchester. perhaps hagueerstown. but we -- hagerstown. but we lose the daytime heating. not a lot of moisture to work with and the showers just fall apart. early saturday morning we return partly sunny but a nice looking saturday. highs well up in the 70s to around 80 degrees. so the forecast today 81, southeast winds 5 to 10. tonight 64 d.c. mid-50s north and west with a touch of fog

and light winds. 83 tomorrow, nice. saturday 79, very pleasant. and sunday looks good, upper 70s. next best chance of rain, that's coming later monday and more likely tuesday and a cooler wednesday with high in the low 70s. go the some good eats in the kitchen. we'll tell about that when 9news now returns.

chef calner. he's with a fabulous new restaurant. i love steak. guess what he brought today? i was talking about this yesterday. stone ground grits. you can get them in charleston, south carolina. look at this. what do you have in there? >> sharp cheddar cheese, fresh scallions, heavy cream. chicken stock. here we have fresh hickory grilled pork tenderloin. >> look at that. >> of course grill marks is on town center drive -- grillmarx is on town center drive. >> we hand cut all our steaks in house. we filet our own fish. we support local business. >> i love that. >> we have our rosemary reduction. we have a spicy sauce. >> it's kind of hot.

>> it's delicious. >> that looks beautiful. beautiful. >> i'll taste it. >> we have fresh oysters on the raw bar, clams, shrimp. we make everything from scratch. croutons, salad dressing. we love it. >> i love you. oh, my gosh. stone ground grits, you can't get them always. you have to cook them slow. >> we cook them low and slow. we make our fresh chicken stock. it takes us an hour and a half, two hours to make a big batch of grits. throw on cheddar cheese, scallions, salt and pepper and it comes out beautiful. >> look at those cuts over there. tell me about the cuts of meat you brought. >> we cut all our steaks in house from rib eyes to new york strip. we house ground our own meat for hamburgers, we hand cut the filet mignot. >> grillmarx is on town center drive. it is in the fair hill shopping
