friday prayers in the middle east. thursday president obama said he'd ordered all the necessary steps to protect americans abroad. tuesday night violence at the u.s. consulate in benghazi, libya left four americans dead including ambassador chris stevens. libyan authorities reported that they have made some arrests. >> i saw those press reports before i came down. i was not able to confirm them, but obviously it would be a good thing if we're starting to move forward on the justice piece. >> reporter: the fbi open an investigation as officials try to sort out whether this was a protest that got out of hand or an organized terrorist attack. danielle nottingham, cbs news, the state department. >> three americans who were injured in the benghazi attack are being treated at a u.s. military hospital in germany. receipt a mans of ambassador stevens -- the remains of ambassador stevens and the three others killed will arrive back in this country tomorrow. we are learning more about the attack itself. every room in that american

consulate was torched, vandalized and looted. the compound on a residential street in the port city of benghazi was not heavily fortified. those attackers bombed the guard house and took over the main building and completely destroyed it and threw pieces of furniture into the pool. that raid lasted 4 1/2 hours, but somehow none of the attackers were caught or killed. on the campaign trail today both side were in the battleground state of virginia. we begin with mitt romney in fairfax coun where the conversation quickly turned to libya. >> mitt romney did not repeat his accusation that the obama administration is apologizing to its enemies, but he did argue that the administration has made the country weaker overseas. governor romney opened the fairfax rally with libya. >> what a tragedy to lose such a wonderful people. >> reporter: and was interrupted almost immediately by a heckler accusing him of

in all the ntsb checked five items off its safety recommendations list for metro today, but there are still a dozen more to go. it is an abandoned apartment building that was not only an eyesore, but a haven for crooks. now as reporter ken molestina explains, it's a new beginning in prince george's county. >> i'm not happy until i see something happen. >> reporter: residents in the coral hills community of prince george's county say the abandoned chapelwood apartments have been a plight on the community far too long. >> it's been an eyesore for the last six years just driving by and the trees have overgrown and the weeds have come up. >> we have been for years suffering through the types of deterioration a community can suffer through with drug trafficking problems, you know, crime and everything else in this area, not to mention the rodent problems and the trash dumping problems that occurred right here. >> tear this down! >> tear that down! >> reporter: with that construction crews tore through the side of the dilapidated

building ending years of decline and public safety issues. county executive rushern baker says this is just the beginning. >> the power of government is in our hands and we're going to use it to transform these neighborhoods throughout prince george's county and we are not going to wait. >> reporter: i'm ken molestina, 9 news now. >> now that lot is zoned residential but no word what will be built to replace the ole building. pennsylvania -- old building. pennsylvania supreme court heard arguments today both for and against the state's controversial new voter id law which would require voters to show photo identification before they can cast a ballot and opponents claim that would unfairly target the elderly, poor and minorities. the state argues it's just a way to protect against voter fraud. the court is expected toish pew a ruling before the end of -- to issue a rule before the end of the month. the federal reserve has a plan to jump start the economy and hopefully reduce unemployment. they'll spend $40 billion a month buying bonds hoping to lower long term interest rates

his last day in prison. >> i think there will be a lot of people there for you. >> reporter: terry steinberg is talking to her 31-year-old son justin wolfe who has been in solitary confinement on death row for 11 years. >> that's been 11 years of ups and downs and disappointments and frustration and shock and disbelief. >> reporter: wolfe is now in the prince william county jail awaiting a bond hearing tomorrow. >> the drawers are full of newspaper articles. >> reporter: wolfe's bedroom is frozen in time with memorabilia from his high school days. he was a running back at chantilly high school in 1996 when they were state champions. in 2002 we had was 21, he -- when he was 21, he was convicted of murder for hire and sentenced to death. the conviction and sentence devastated the entire family. twice his mother was given dates for justin's execution. >> it was just a very sick feeling that, you know, wow, this is the day they say they're going to take my son's life and you feel so helpless. you know, how can i stop this?

what can i do? >> reporter: wolfe was a marijuana dealer. the jury found him guilty of hiring owen barber to kill daniel petrolli who was wolfe's drug supplier. barber was the prosecution's star witness. >> he is a person who is able to manipulate. >> reporter: but in 2005 barber recanted his testimony and said wolfe had nothing to do with the murder. in 2010 barber testified in federal court that he implicated wolfe to avoid the death penalty. the judge overturned wolfe's convictions finding that prosecutors allowed barber to give false testimony. >> my son should not be dying for selling marijuana. >> reporter: last month the state lost again when a federal appeals court refused to reinstate the murder conviction and death sentence. tomorrow at justin wolfe's bond hearing his attorney will ask the judge to set him free. >> but if i don't hold onto the hope, then i don't have anything. so i'm just going to continue to hope and believe that justice will finally be served
