and -- genon potomac power plant and was the first to raise questions about its emissions. the current owners say publicly they're is hurting the plant -- they're shuttering the plant because it's too expensive to keep running, but citizens component to elizabeth. she educated herself about coal- fired plants and emissions and commissioned three studies. one of the most important studies was from a local scientist who disproved what the company was saying about something called downwash. instead of pollutant particle going up into the atmosphere, the scientists found they were actually coming down into the neighborhood. >> it proved that more than 1,200 hours a year this plant was emitting sulfur dioxide beyond the national standard. >> reporter: the downwash was due in part to the short stacks required because the plant is in the flight path of national

airport. a penn state study matched the company's coal to that gray residue and a harvard study connected residents' health problems to pollutants spewed out by the plant. >> we can all take a deep breath. >> reporter: but until the last 15,000 tons of coal is gone elizabeth chimento will be keeping track. peggy fox, 9 news now. >> clean-up will take about 18 months at the plant. most of genon's 120 workers have transferred or retired and there's no word on what's next for that valuable waterfront property. in maryland a calvert county judge is deciding whether dominion resources can start using hydraulic fracturing techniques to increase its natural gas exports. the company wants to spend up to $3 billion for those upgrades, but the sierra club says this process will harm the chesapeake bay and nearby calvert cliff state park. a slew of cases for the u.s. supreme court this season. the justices wasted no time

getting back to work today. they started the session by hearing arguments about whether businesses or individuals can be sued in the u.s. for conduct on foreign soil. the justices also declined to hear arguments about redistricting in illinois, the use of full body scanners for airport security and a challenge to a federal rule barring development in national forests. this term they're expected to hear cases about affirmative action, same sex marriage and voter rights. we could all face a massive tax increase if congress does not get to work to avoid that so-called fiscal cliff. a new study from the tax policy center says a typical middle income family could he would its taxes go up by about 2 -- could see its taxes go up by about $2,000 if congress does not extend a slew of tax cuts set to expire in december. today marks one year since the occupy movement hit d.c.

a gathering at st. paul church in woodbridge. he held a women's meeting in fairfax this morning. house majority leader eric cantor is set to debate an opponent for only the second time since being elected to congress in 2000. cantor, a republican from virginia's 7th district will debate democrat wayne powell, a lawyer and retired army colonel making his first run for public office. the debate is in richmond tonight set for one hour and focus on the big issue, the economy. wednesday will be the first president al debate between president obama and governor mitt romney. domestic policy will be the theme in denver and we here at wusa9 are your go to debate station wednesday night. if you just want the facts and no spin. 9 news now is teaming up with our sister paper usa today and starting at 9 p.m. on our website we will be fact checking what the candidates say. we will also live stream the debate. so make sure your television is turned to channel 9 to watch the debate when it starts at

winds were over 100 miles an hour. remember a typhoon is the same as a hurricane. it's just across the international dateline. okay. our live weather cam brought to you by michael and son, little calmer, some sprinkles but nothing crazy, right now 67. as the precipitation moves in, it will cool. this dew point will come up. that temperature will go down and it will cool off, winds south, southwest at 10. the big picture, satellite picture radar combined, there's where most of the action will be in the ohio and tennessee valley because the storm itself is back into alabama and this storm is actually going to move pretty much northward into the ohio valley. so consequently the heaviest access of rain tonight and early tomorrow will be west of town. that said there are some sprinkles already. i don't think it will be anything big at the game, no delays and certainly not a cancellation. if you're going, take a poncho. these showers are moving through. then there's another batch of showers to the south, but the main event is really late

tonight and early tomorrow. in fact, a little heavier activity down towards harrisonburg and charlottesville. these are just sprinkles on connecticut avenue and out 50 if you're going out toward annapolis and a couple sprinkles down 202. showers on the way, showers after the game and a couple showers before the game, but the main event will be after the game. wet tuesday morning, may want to leave a little early tuesday morning. warmer on wednesday, a little touch of summer coming back. thunderstorms are possible especially wednesday. late tonight 1:00 in the morning a couple showers south of town and our futurecast putting this into motion. we see some pretty big storm orr heavy rain roll through the metro. warm front will try to bust through here tomorrow morning. so 6:00, 7:00, 8:00 some pretty good action right along 66 toward 50 and points north indicated by the yellow and orange there. then a break, light showers possible later in the morning and another little break by evening and then this time tomorrow we could see another
