have doubled the dose. but the fix doesn't come in time for the field trip. >> you're kind of expecting to kind of see like experience how cool it was, but maybe next time. >> we had a bunch of questions we had to ask them about the reflecting pools and the memorial, so now we can't answer the question because of the reflecting pool. but that's okay, we're counting squares. >> reporter: maybe not so much fun or as fun as hanging out at the reflecting pool. but get this, it will cost $100,000 to drain the reflecting pool. 65 workers here including contractors and staff. they say it will take days to finish up, but at least to cut it in half. it'll take three days to fill up the entire reflecting pool and that is after they do all the clean up. so get this, how daunting it is to get ahead of the algae. it doubles in size every four hours. the national park service says to think about scrubbing the

entire giant bathtub. no thanks. back to you. >> no thanks here either. thank you for telling us what's going on. there is some frightening moments this afternoon for the two workers outside the congress department. they were rescued after the scaffolding collapsed, leaving theming dangling from the building, which happened just a couple hours ago in the 1400 block of pennsylvania avenue. investigators say that the safety harnesses helped save them and neither were hurt. mitt romney back out on the campaign trail with a little extra pep in his step following his performance during last night's first presidential debate. in fact he is repeating today some of the very same lines he used last last night against president obama. we will have the rest of that story at the white house. certainly invigorated his campaign. now a day later, the obama camp

is trying to use his words against him. the crowd at the conservative conference in colorado welcomed mitt romney with thunderous applause on saturday. it was a victory lap. >> trickle down government that the president proposes is one where he will raise taxes on small business, which will kill jobs. i instead want to keep taxes down on small businesses to create jobs. >> an instant cbs news poll of the uncommittedded voters showed that he won the first debate by a margin of 2-1. speaking on thursday, he continues to draw contrast with the president. >> we don't measure compassion on how many people to put on food stamp and how many you can get a good job to get off the food stamps. >> reporter: president obama came out swinging on thursday, something that critics say he should have done at the debate. >> the president told the crowd of supporters in denver that a different challenger showed up

untrue depending on where you will sit at the moment. >> i see. so in other words you needed to show the new one to figure out who was telling the truth, making it a hot tougher? >> yes, absolutely. we'll talk about some of those statements because the $5 trillion tax cut is one of the things that took up a lot of that first debate. something we talk about last night. now, let's listen to president obama talk about it. >> governor romney's central economic man calls for a $5 trillion tax cut on top of the bush tax cuts, another $1 trillion and $2 trillion in additional military spending that the military has not asked for. that's $8 trillion. how we pay for that reare deuces the deficit and make the investments that we need to make without dumping those costs on the be middle class americans, i think it is one of the central questions of this campaign. >> of course, romney came on right after that and said no, that's not what i want to do. the question is who is right? >> well, mitt romney said i will not, i don't have a tax cut.

but anyone saying that i don't have a tax cut to do that. he does have a tax cut. a 20% across the board reduction in tax rates, which obviously costs money. romney says he makes up for that by closing hoop holes raising -- loopholes raising revenues. but he has not identified what those loopholes are. and another issue is expanding the economy by giving tax cuts will bring other people into the taxpayer pool also raising revenue. but the math has never been full hi sorted out -- fully sorted out, so we never know where the savings are. >> and we find out how tough that is. now, let's talk about it for a second. accusing the president of cutting $716 billion for medicare. he is running a lot of ads to that effect. it came up last night. let's listen to what romney said. >> at the same time gasoline prices have doubled under the president, electric rates are up, food prices are up. health care costs have gone up by $2,500 a family.

middle income families are being crushed. >> okay, so now had it gone up that much because of obama care and the cuts in medicare? >> the health care costs have gone up that much in 2008, a family average plan, employer sponsored plan would have been$1,250. however that's a lower increase than what they planned in the years before. in fact, what the kaiser family foundation, they said well, we have a 4% increase in health care cost. that's pretty good. it used to be 8% to 10%. yes, health care costs have gone up, not as much as it used to go up. >> it is trickier and trickier. paul singer, thank you for your insight. we will need it again and i'm sure. >> yes, call me any time, come by the office. >> yes, we will come back and vice president, of course, they are in danville, kentucky next week, we'll talk to you then. >> we'll be doing it again, thank you. police in fairfax county, they are searching for a

woodson high school senior who has been missing since monday. and officers, they were back out this afternoon, canvassing the area around face park in fairfax. that is where brian glenn's car was found parked on tuesday morning. kristin fisher sat down with his parents at their home this morning. >> it was not until after football practice that they became concerned. >> reporter: that was monday evening. and mike glenn has been searching for his son ever since. 17-year-old brian glenn, a senior ated woodson high school -- at woodson high school. >> it's difficult, it is really tough. we don't have enough leads to develop the opinion on the likely outcome here. >> reporter: he was last seen here at woodson high school around 7:15 on monday morning. his car found less than 24 hours later at a park just two miles away. and inside his car, police found their next big clue, a receipt from a dunkin' donuts just up the road.

>> as a parent i would like to think okay, i've got a 17-year- old son who has experimented something that went awry and he is trying to figure out how to deal with the shame and come home. i would like to think that's the case. i'm praying that's the case. >> reporter: he is also praying that surveillance footage from the dunkin' donuts will show whether or not brian was alone. now police in fairfax county are calling the case unusual, but not suspicious. detectives spent yesterday searching the area for clues, and they will be back at it again today. >> we know brian is out there. we wanted to know that he will be okay that we're going to get him home. >> reporter: in fairfax, kristin fisher, 9news now. >> boy, his family really are wants him home. the center for missing and exploiting children is calling him an endangered runaway. if you know anything about where he could be, you are asked to call fairfax county

police. the number 703-691-2131. police have released a composite sketch of a man wanted for fondling at least five women in springfield. now the attacks include one this past tuesday night on hibling avenue. in that case, the woman said he was groped in front of the daughter. police said that another woman was groped along the avenue back on september 19. detectives believe that this could be more victims out there and they are urging them to come forward. ten years ago tonight, the d.c. snipers were terrorizing our region and the families of helplessness at the time making for some unsettling memories. >> it was 23 days of terror, but tonight police put an end to something similar with technology they could have only dreamed of back then. scott broom is live tonight with montgomery county mison what changed then and what we have now, scott? >> reporter: there is one

technology tool in particular that has been deployed here in montgomery county in just the past couple of years that many here are absolutely convinced would have lead them to those d.c. snipers a whole lot more quickly. one technology is just astounding and you may have seen these on the road. this is an automatic license plate reader. it can record and scan literally thousands of plates per day. deployed here in montgomery county just two years ago. these did not exist when they were terrorizing our region. if it had existed, police could have searched the data collected as they responded to shootings to automatically scour thousands of license plates seen near the scenes and match up plates seen multiple times. literally teasing out a needle from the hay stack. likely identifying that blue chevy caprice the snipers were working from much earlier. >> we had a mountain of information coming in from all different sources.

if we had it coming through the license plate reader, it would have been more manageable, we would have been able to categorize it and reduce the amount as significant. >> reporter: now police reminded me they did have contact with the two suspects during the period, writing it all down on paper. no way to cross reference that. it just wouldn't happen. now they've got 20 of these reader on the streets in montgomery county. a lot of other area jurisdictions have them and they have fixed ones out on the icc as well. now listen when i come back here at 6:00 tonight, i'm thinking about getting into other technology, social media, twitter, facebook. how that might have impacted this case had that existed back then. i'll be back at 6:00 with more on that. reporting live, scott broom, 9news now. >> we were just asking that question right here in the newsroom. we look forward to your report at 6:00, scott. well this accident scene may look real and while it's

an outbreak of a rare type of meningitis keeps growing. five victims, 35 people in six states have already gotten sick. all of these victims got steroid injections for pain, which contained meningitis. >> they are in a waiting game to see if she gets meningitis. >> and i just sort of thought okay we're going to research this. of course, the more i research it, the more worried i got. >> reporter: she is one of had

00 patients who got a call from a tennessee clinic saying they may have been exposed to a rare form of the disease, which is not contagious. the biggest outbreak is in tennessee and also a handful of cases in virginia, maryland, florida, indiana, and north carolina. all the victims got sick after getting steroid injections most for back pain. >> none of us have seen anything like this. where the medication injected into the spinal fluid has caused an infection. so we are at a new territory here. >> the steroid medication came from the new england compounding company in massachusetts. the federal investigators say they found fungal contaminants. telling doctors not to use any product from the company until their investigation is complete. meningitis is an inflammation of the lining of the brain and the spinal cord. symptoms include the headache,

nausea, dizziness and fever. they are hopeful that she will stay healthy. >> i'm sort of trying not to think of it as being possibly me in a day or two. >> if she starts to feel any of those symptoms, she had head to the hospital right away. >> that is key there for the medical treatment. the period is between 2 to 28 days. so a lot of these people are just waiting. federal officials say that 23 states got shipments from the contaminated lot from the new england company. well just like the washington nationals, d.c. police are making plans for the major league playoffs. they talked about some of what they are looking at today during their ask the chief segment. one of the first order of business was to increase the manpower around the nationals park. >> for these games we have added an additional 45 officers to that immediate area and because the demand will be much greater. you know you have floods of the pedestrian traffic that will come in and out of the same time with all these cars coming in. so coordinating them, it is really not an easy task. this will be obviously a record

>> let's talk about what helped each candidate. >> okay. >> what helped the president and what hurt him? one of the things you said about the president in his views are his ability to connect to voters. we saw that several times. >> right. >> throughout the evening. >> not enough, but a few times. to engage them to be more natural and more of his natural stuff, he can connect. but he did not do it enough at all. so we didn't get a connection fact on him. >> meaning he should have looked more directly. >> yes, be more -- yes, not be so buffed down like he is always trying to educate. this wasn't the time for that. >> yeah. >> and what really hurt him though? >> what really hurt him was his lack of command and presence. it was like he wasn't there as a president, the strong confident leader that we know him to be. on a scale of one to ten he was himself, but he was like a four. he needed to be a ten that night. this is not a time to be like i'm off my game. he was just too passive, too

reigned in, he did not even look at romney enough times. he was not making contact with romney. we the viewers will see him engaging with his candidate, but he didn't. so it looked like romney who did that, it looked like obama was kind of conceding, giving him a whole impression of being, you know, just passive. >> so romney seemed to be more in charge because he appeared to be more engaged, not just with obama? >> yes. let's talk about governor romney, both things that helped and hurt him. one quick sound byte and we'll talk about it. >> sure. >> look, i've got five boys. i'm used to people saying something that is not always true, but just keep on repeating it and ultimately that i would believe it. but that is not the case. >> one of the things that is different about what governor romney needed to do and what the president needed to do. the governor has had to really kind of make himself likable. >> exactly. >> was that a likable moment?

>> i've got a point about that. i feel like he was trying to be funny, but it came out a little force. and so to me, not really. i don't think that he is confident. but as a president who has that like ability, that is his sweet spot. that's his core. he is likable. he didn't lose any of that, but he did not gain anything in a sense of command. can this guy run the country, can he do another four years? that performance kind of makes you wonder he needed more command absolutely. >> one last thing that governor romney needed to do that was a shortfall for him is a smurk. >> sometimes it looked like he was just looking, but sometimes he was like feeling he was doing pretty well. as opposed to just smiling pleasantly. i thought that was a little bit

good samaritans are in action stopping a thief from robbing a 6 it-year-old woman. this is surveillance video. she had just cashed her check. well just as she is about to get into her brother's car, check it out. this guy comes up, snatches her purse and runs off. she falls down with all that cash inside. look at this. they will say you are going nowhere, my friend. in fact they grab him, toss him to the ground. and they hold him down until the police get there. look at him try to get a few punches in too. rosemary was not seriously hurt. >> good to know that they at least cared. >> yes, absolutely. caught on tape hitting a woman in the face is being dismissed from the department. you saw it right there. the police commissioner and the former d.c. chief suspended the lieutenant for 30 days as of today with the intent to dismiss. it all happened during the parade on sunday. the officers say that the woman threw beer at them, but was just spraying some silly

string. a disorderly conduct charge against the woman has been dropped. >> yes. now to another bizarre situation. this one in the lobby of the ft. meyers police department yesterday morning. do you see that man right there? he comes in, sits down. then two officers will come through a door and notice that he's got a silver machete. the man stands up, he points it at them. police jump into action and then quickly they take him down. >> you know that is not going to end well. >> not for me. >> you really need to keep that put away. >> yes. and in south florida, rush hour got a little hairy yesterday morning when a huge bird stopped traffic. >> yes, it was taco, a 4-year- old five foot tall emu who was out looking for a mate when he wandered out. now apparently he is looking at everybody and everything. now deputies are like what do we do with this crazy looking creature? they tried to herd him off the

in a follow-up e-mail, he points out that the website referenced in the offer to cynthia seen here at this address is not the company's real website, which you see here. >> i thought it was a legitimate job offer. >> reporter: the offer would allow her to work from home as an administrative financial clerk. all she had to do was pass some tests. >> you saw the financial statements. >> yes, they were checking their answers. which you know this is a real job. >> but when we checked from the representative who claimed to work for them, we found all kinds of red flags that might suggest otherwise. and so did ed johnson with the better business bureau. >> it is an organized company. you would think that if they do have a job search going on that someone has done spell check down the line. >> reporter: eventually she gets the job, but never meets with anyone in person. >> at some point along the way if you're going to get the job
