good afternoon, i'm j.c. hayward. thanks for being with us. montgomery county police are investigating a deadly shooting that involves one of their officers. it happened this morning just hours after the same man called 911, asking police to kill him.

christian fisher has more from the scene near the intersection of woodland drive and flora lane from silver springs. >> first thing that i heard was just the gun shot. it was very rapid, you know, eight of them in a row, just bam, bam, bam. slid out of bed, stayed low. looked like the whole police department was outside. >> reporter: these three roommates woke up to police shooting a 22-year-old man just two hours after he made a bizarre phone call to 191. >> starting stating that he was armed, he wanted to kill himself or wanted to die, and he wanted the police to kill him. >> reporter: police tracked him to this home in silver springs, where his 23-year-old girlfriend was babysitting three kids overnight. >> we told the girlfriend, keep the door locked, stay away from the basement door and don't let them in. >> reporter: police were able to get the girlfriend and the kids out safe, through the front door, while trying to talk down her boyfriend, who was standing in a back stairwell.

they went back and forth for about an hour, but then he made his move toward police. >> he did have some sort of handgun in one of his hands, and there was an encounter between he and the place and he was slot. >> sounded like seven slots and we heard an officer yelling for him to get on the ground. i was terrified. i didn't know what to do. i guess it was natural reflexes, so jump down and take over. >> reporter: the police department's internal affairs is still investigating exactly what happened, and why this 22-year-old seemingly had a death wish. police say before he confronted them, it doesn't appear that he committed any other crimes. in silver spring, crist stun fisher, 9news now. >> the officers involved are on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of that investigation. the man shot by prince george's county police is expected to make a full recovery. it happened last night on 35th avenue near hamilton street. police say the plan was involved in a domestic situation with a

woman, when he charged at an officer with a knife. the officer was not injured. we now have an update on the continue verse seal ads one group wants to place on metro. the agency says that it will have the ads up by 5:00 this afternoon. a judge ruled on friday that metro needs to display the american freedom defense initiatives ads equating muslims with savages. metro had asked the group to wait, because of the tense situation in the middle east. the ads will be posted at the tacoma, glenmont, u street and georgia avenue stations. well, just moments ago, mitt romney wrapped up what is being called a major foreign policy speech in virginia. he spoke to cadets at the virginia military institute in lexington, and the republican presidential nominee says the risk of conflict in the middle east is higher today than it

was when president obama took office. >> hope is not a strategy. we can't support our friends and defeat our enemies in the middle east when our words are not backed up by deeds. when our defense spending is being arbitrarily and deeply cut and we have no trade agenda to speak of, and the perception of our strategy is not one of partnership, but of passivity. >> virginia governor bob mcdonald introduced romney to the crowd. he spoke mainly about the impact of mandatory defense cuts in virginia, if congress does not reach a budget deal. meanwhile, president obama is on the opposite side of the country. he is embarking on a west coast fundraising swing for the next two days. his campaign is expected to bring in about nine and a half million dollars. well the league of women voters is sponsoring tonight's debate between former governors

george allen and tim kaine. they are vying for webb's senate seat. you can watch it live right here on wusa 9.com. well tonight in maryland, ravens linebacker brendan yo is scheduled to join governor martin o'malley supporting same sex marriage. maryland is one state considering legalizing those marriages last month. the ravens linebacker spoke out in favor of the referendum. another player, center matt burk released an internet video last week opposing the plan. crews are back out today, searching for any sign of a missing high school student. brian glenn was last seen a week ago on the campus of wt woodson high school. his car was later found on

picket road, more than 100 people are expected back at a park today, to see if they can find any clues about this 17-year-old. a 28 year prison sentence is not keeping joran van der sloot out of the news. the dutch national confirms today he got a woman pregnant during an unsupervised visit. he first made headlines back in aruba in the disappearance of natalee holloway back in 2005. lawyers for jerry sandusky are due back in court today, one day ahead of the former penn state coach's sentencing. they are meeting with prosecutors and the judge in the case for some pretrial motions. sandusky was found guilty on 45 counts of child sex abuse earlier this year. he faces life in prison at tomorrow's sentencing.

felix baumgardner plans to free fall from 23 miles over new mexico tomorrow. the 43-year-old was hoping to help nasa figure outweighs for astronauts to survive a high

altitude disaster. another pro jeblght rumored to have taken to the skies over roswell, new mexico may have actually been reality. the u.s. government is releasing drawings, and schematics of the flying saucer it tried to build back in the 1950s. those documents show that the united states air force worked with a canadian company to create what it called a supersonic craft, shaped like a disk. project 1794 was eventually dropped in 1960, after the saucers built proved hard to fly at high all the tuesday. first -- altitudes. first the ruby slippers, and now dorothy's dress is on the move. the outfit judy garland wore in the wizard of oz is being auctioned off. it is the only complete original dress to survive, and is expected to bring in half a million dollars.

winchester and cumberland at this hour, andrews and la plata are 48, fredericksburg, 49 and salisbury 55. annapolis would have been closer at 53 degrees. lots of clouds on our michael and son weather camera here, 51 with the dew point of 66%. the disturbance is coming through the tennessee valley moving off toward the northeast. rains weakening in intensity here. we are seeing other showers developing, south carolina, north carolina toward southeastern virginia, kind of two areas we are going to watch for the afternoon. i think the futurecast is a little bit underdone with some of the rain here west of us. scattered showers and light rain, the good news is, other than an early shower tomorrow, we are going to be dry for the most part for the rest of the week. today yellow alert for the showers, later tonight, 53. tonight back in the mid-40s in town, upper 30s in the cold spots with light rain and

i have breaking news from wheaton, maryland. connecticut avenue is closed. sky 9 was over the scene not too long ago, where a tree has fallen on a car. isn't that incredible? no one was in the car at the time but we need to tell that you connecticut avenue is closed between randolph road and dale wood road. and that is in wheaton, maryland. we don't know how long it is going to take for them to clean up that situation, but if you travel on connecticut avenue, you need to use an alternate

see that if they buy, it is much cheaper. >> and they save money. >> and they save money. >> and there are so many programs now, available for a lot of people who have low income. they just need to do a little investigation. >> that's right. >> and having a home now, is so much easier than it was many years ago. >> well the consumer confidence is really come back, you know, the jobs market, the good news we just had about how that's getting stronger, more jobs, we are seeing that now in real estate. more people are starting to get over their fears, and starting to want to buy. >> are we talking about all areas of the metropolitan area? >> in fact, there is seven counties, montgomery county, prince george's county, howard county, that came out in the news in the united states. that are the strongest.
