first hometown playoff game. it's going to start in a little bit, over an hour. this is something that has not happened here in 79 years. kristen berset is live at national park. she has more information. >> reporter: hey, jc. what a day this is going to be. it's gorgeous weather out here. natitude in full effect. the nats have a great opportunity to go ahead in the series 2-1 over the st. louis cardinals. what better than to put their only experienced pitcher out on the mounds that actual -- mound that actually has playoff experience. edwin jackson won a world series ring last season with the cardinals. there's that little extra incentive for the righty going against his former team. he's been a little bit inconsistent this season, but manager davey johnson says he's confident that jackson can handle the pressure. >> he's been outstanding all year long. pitched exceptionally well so it's good to have him here and it's good to have his experience going into game

three. >> he's been through a lot. obviously he's pitched a ton in the post-season. for him to have that experience and go out there in a pivotal game in the series is going to be great for us. >> i feel like being the only one with the playoff experience in the rotation, i mean, it's high expectations on me. i have high expectations for myself as well. this is one of those games where you go out and you try to lead by example. >> reporter: here's a look at the pitching matchup today. the nationals face former n.f.l. cy young award winner chris carpenter. he has been hurt most of this year but he has a 9-2 career record in the playoffs. jc, they're giving out -- they know natitude is in full force but for the next home game, they're giving out these red natitude rally towels, getting the fans pumped and excited to show their support and the perks of this job, i've got to

show you, jc, this is a hamburger i'm about to eat in a second but if the nationals win their first ever division series, free hamburgers for everybody the day after. i'm going to go and enjoy this since it is lunch time. we'll have complete wrapup of this game coming up and 5:00 and 6:00 tonight. i'm kristen berset live at nationals park. back to you. >> thank you very much, kristen. the other big sports headline today is the health of redskins quarterback robert griffin iii. rg3 was knocked out of sunday's game with the falcons because of a mild conculings. report -- concussion. reports say the rookie quarterback will practice today on a non-contact basis. if he remains stop free, he's expected to be back behind center for sunday's game against the minnesota vikings. the n.f.l. is mourning the loss of football great alex caris. the former -- alex karras.

the former all pro has died. he is known for the comedy classic "blazing saddles" and the abc sitcom "webster." he was 77 years old. police are investigating a possible parental kidnapping occurring in prince george's county. a father allegedly abducted his 4-year-old son from a gas station in the 7500 block of landover road. police initially surrounded the house in the 7400 block of hawthorne street but they have since left that scene. it is unclear exactly where the boy and the father are. police are not answering our telephone calls, but we are monitoring the situation. we will have more information for you when it becomes available. congressional hearings are under way to determine what went wrong during the deadly siege at the mental consulate in libya. the american ambassador chris stevens and three others were killed in that september 11

attack. it was not the first time that the compound has been targeted. the consulate was bombed in june. just three days before the latest attack, the commander of a local militia warned americans about their deteriorating security conditions in libya. the supreme court is taking up the issue of a affirmative action at universities -- of affirmative action at universities. the plaintiff says she was denied admission to the university of texas because she is white. danielle nottingham has more now from capitol hill. >> reporter: the supreme court is once again deciding whether race should be a factor in college admissions. abigail fisher sued the university of texas claimed she was denied a spot partly because she is white. fisher's supporters say there are ways colleges can promote diversity without considering race. >> we think that colleges and universities throughout the country can institute race neutral admission criteria, especially using economic disadvantage to give students a

leg up. >> reporter: texas has a law called the 10% plan. it guarantees admission to all students in the top 10% of their class regardless of race. after those students are admitted, the university of texas uses other factors, including test scores, student activities, and race to determine who gets the remaining spots. the supreme court tack himmed the controversial issue just nine years ago but since then, the makeup of the court has become more conservative. >> the end of affirmative action is a political goal that people had for quite some time. that's what's at stake in this case. >> reporter: the university contends even if fisher was a minority student, she would not have made the cut the year she applied. supporters of the university's policy says changing it would harm everyone. >> all students would suffer, not just black and latino students. all students benefit from learning together in the classroom and outsides the classroom. >> reporter: for 30 years the supreme court has upheld affirmative action but that may

police in pittsburgh are investigating a random brutal attack on a teenager. and it was caught on tape. a teacher was walking in a downtown alley when six young men were walking the other way.

suddenly one of the young men punches james adesberger in the face. he was knocked out and he hit his head on a curb. he was taken to a nearby hospital with cuts and bruises. police say they have identified three of the teenagers but not the one who actually hit the teacher. also caught on tape, an extreme biker's failed attempt to make a dare devil jump. the biker cam vink was trying to jump a 68-foot canyon. unfortunately he loses control in mid air at the tail end of the jump and crashes to the ground. this happened in zion national park. zink survived the crash with just two bruised heels. it's that time of the year. niemann marcus has released its christmas catalogue. it's definitely for 1% of the population. $345,000 will get you a dream sports car.

i want to tell you that if you have not made plans for friday evening, i have a great suggestion. you could go to the west end cinema to see a fabulous documentary. i have the film maker here to talk all about this new documentary that is about the shaw area. those of who you are new to washington may not know how special the shaw area is, but the name of this documentary is "oxygen for the ears: living jazz." what a wonderful name. i love take. >> thank you. >> how did you come up with "oxygen for the ears"? >> it was supersomeone -- from somebody in the film. he said jazz is like oxygen for

the ears, for the heart, for the soul and we named the film after it. >> there are so many things we can talk about that came from the shaw area, especially the u street area was before the renaissance really, the harlem renaissance. it was very special. all the greats came here. what will we learn from this film of yours? >> when this is one of the reasons i wanted to actually make the film. people outside of d.c., when they think of d.c. they think of politics, government, special interests, but we have this tremendous jazz community in the shaw area and georgetown. we have this legacy and talented jazz musician. -- jazz musicians. you can go out any night and you'll hear jazz. we wanted to tell that story. >> jelly roll morton, i didn't realize that he operated a jazz club in the area. the jungle inn. >> which was right next door, next door to ben's chili bowl.

>> one of my favorite places. everybody knows about duke ellington. he's a living legend and great. we all know about him. but there's some other things about this area that you'll find out in the film. such as? >> for instance, we also tell stories about the childhood of duke ellington. why he started out as a jazz musician. he actually had a paint sign store. he painted signs. >> is that so? >> yes. a lot of people asked him can you paint a sign for a jazz dance. that's how he became involved in performing at those jazz dances. >> your film has already received great acclaim. you've been in -- accepted into 13 film festivals around the world. that's kind of outstanding and unique. aren't you proud? >> very happy about this, yes. especially because we have never made a film before. it's our first film. >> all right. i want to let everybody know

friday you can go to the west end cinema in northwest washington. you don't have to be invited. you can just show up, get a ticket and see "oxygen for the ears." i love t. congratulations -- i love it. congratulations. >> thank you very much. >> thank you for bringing this to everyone's attention, how special the shaw area is. we're doing pretty well today. had some clouds early but we're looking at a mix of clouds and sun. slight chance after stray shower this afternoon but we're looking at temperatures upper 60s, making a run toward maybe 70, 71. then we cool off in the 60s, even 50s later tonight. so it's a great day out there for baseball. got that post-season game going on. division game with the cardinals in town. and for washington baseball fans, it's a game they've been waiting for all their lives. our kristin fisher caught up with some of the fans this morning as they were headed out to nats park. >> going all the way, baby. number one. i believe. we all believe. don't we? we're going all the way, right, folks? let's hear it. >> reporter: almost a hundred people were lined up hoping to

score some last-minute standing room only tickets to the first post-season game ever played here at nats park. what time did you get out here? >> about 20 minutes to 6:00. there were for people in front of us. >> just now calling into work to let them know i'll not be there today. >> i was here for the first opener when they opened the stadium. i figured better be here for the first playoff game, too. >> reporter: check out those nails. how long did it take you to do that? >> about two hours. i do them every night. there's no words to express how excited i am. >> reporter: cheers as the box office opens. everyone in line got what they came for. those who already had tickets hold down their spots to be first inside the ballpark. >> that's cody. that's harry. >> reporter: hey, cody and harry. are the nats going to win today? yeah? oh, yeah, definitely. >> i hope it's not a once in a

lifetime opportunity. >> reporter: how much do i have to pay you for that ticket? >> i wouldn't sell it, no. i wouldn't sell it. stood in line for four hours? i don't think so. >> you could not pay me enough money for these tickets. i worked really hard to get this day off for this game and i'm going. >> reporter: at nats park, kristin firer, 9news -- kristin fisher, 9news now. >> they're certainly having a lot of fun down there. first game begins at 1:07 first pitch traffic. we -- pitch this afternoon. we may see a couple of clouds come across the region. a stray or slim chance after stray shower. temperatures not 46 in frederick. they're having a problem out there. but still 58 hagerstown. 63 winchester. 65 on the bay in annapolis. we've actually dropped a couple of degrees this past hour. now 64 with a mix of sun and puffy clouds as we look toward the northeast on our michael & son weather camera. 64 reagan national with a west, southwest wind at 8. the humidity 54%. dew point is only 47. it's not that humid at all.

we're going to have some drier air and colder air moving n. look at all the light blue in south central canada sinking down into the dakotas now and the northern lakes. that's some colder air that will be coming in behind the front which is coming through us this afternoon. so instead of temperatures in the upper 60s and low 70s like we're thinking later today, looks like our highs will only be in the low to mid-60s the next couple of days. the country is pretty quiet. a little bit of rain and snow mixing here across parts of north dakota with that boundary and colder air moving in. the front producing showers which are pushing through buffalo and rochester on the way to syracuse over toward pittsburgh with some isolated showers at this hour. for us, there's just not a lot of moisture to work with so the front will come through. winds will start southwest and westerly today will turn to the northwest tonight behind the front. again the slim shower chance late. we're not going to see much weather this front. tonight will be clear and chilly. winds kick up out of the northwest. we dip into the 30s and 40s. it's going to be colder, nippy tomorrow morning with a brisk

northwesterly wind but a sunny thursday. high temperature about 64. as we head into friday, maybe just a few clouds passing across the region. some showers well to our north of us and in the mountains. friday in the mid-60s. but the weekend, we're not going to have any issues like last weekend when we had the kind of cold and damp sunday. this one looks good. stray shower chance. upper 60s, maybe 70, 71 this afternoon. tonight 45 or so for d.c. but 36, 37 in the cold suburbs. tomorrow 64. the friday nice, 66. and the weekend, that's looking good, too. upper 60s saturday. the skins and the ravens are home on sunday. mid- to upper 70s. and we'll watch and see whether or not a coastal develops early next week that could have a big impact on monday and tuesday. stick around. we're going to the kitchen when 9news now at noon returns.

today i'm one on one with chris who is at the helm of 2100 prime in the fairfax at embassy row hotel. very, very famous. very famous restaurant. he's brought his new fall menu that is just delightful. i asked him about the tomahawk rib eye. he said it was 28 ounces. oh, my goodness. i could eat off of that the whole week. some lovelilings. linguine garlic shrimp. just a new menu. you've been there for four months. of course it has a rich, rich history. he enprepared food for -- he even prepared food for one of the presidents, president clinton he told me. but today he's doing a favorite of mine, a beat salad -- a beet salad. >> we go to the farmers markets every sunday. we're formally the jockey club. we walk to the dupont circle

farmers market. we're on 2100 massachusetts avenue. we buy different fall vegetables, root vegetables. local goat cheese from cherry glen farm in boyds, maryland. >> i love when local restaurants support our farmer. they need our support. it's so fresh and so tasty. you're doing something with that cheese. >> this is the goat cheese from cherry glen farm in boyds, maryland. we just season flour, egg wash, panko bread crumbs you can buy at any grocery store. once it's breaded i fry it in can knoll la oil-- >> can knoll la -- canola oil. >> we roast the beets in the oven. aluminum foil. >> you put them in whole? >> it concentrates all the flavor. it all stays in there. once it's warm enough, you take a towel. you wipe off all the skins. then we just slice them and make homemade dressings. all of our desserts are made from scratch every day. all of our salad dressings are

from scratch as well. >> you know what i like? i love the heirloom tomatoes. >> we eat them all summer long. >> they're different colors and different flavors. they're just delicious. oh, look at that cheese. that looks so good. >> we have a little homemade champagne vin receipt-- >> vinegarette. >> look what i found. >> candied pecans to accompany it. >> can i just taste this? >> absolutely. >> because i love cheese. that's nice. >> we have a great event coming up next year. it starts january 25. we're home to the capitol wine festival. you can go online. capitolwinefestival.com. it starts the 25th. we'll do boutique wines from all over the country. really famous small vineyards. isn't that awesome? >> it is awesome. these beets are so g. you see i can't stop. the red one.
