he dazzled the minnesota vikings at fedex field today a week after being knocked out of the game. he led the skins to the first home win in more than a year. dave owens is here with the highlights and reaction. hey, dave. >> a win that was a long time coming for the burgundy and gold. this game interesting for a lot of reasons. was griffin fully recovered from getting his noggin nknocked last week. all of those questions as we went into the game today. rg3 thinking pink today. he was making minnesota blue getting it done with his arms. he rifles this pass across. then later on, he's got legs. oh, he knows how to use them. 76 yards. he also added a 7-yarder, two touchdowns on the day. washington wins it 38-26. home losing streak, gone. >> i took off running and got to the sideline, thought i would run out of bounds because

everyone's been telling me that lately, and then you know, you know in certain situations and i felt like i had the guy outflanked and i just took off running. the rest is history. i got to enjoy the moment a little bit. it was pretty fun. >> he's got that 43 speed, no doubt about it. griffin rushed for 138 yards, the most by a quarterback since 2006 when mike vic ran for 166 as a falcon. we'll have much more coming up later on in sports. >> 43 speed for a quarterback, unheard of. would you agree with that editorial comment i had, most exciting player in the nfl this season? >> i think when you take into account the way he can throw it the way he runs it as well, no doubt. right now most exciting player in the nfl. >> thanks a lot, dave. what do the fans think about the skins performance today and rg3 to be specific. let's take a look. >> big win, go skins. >> it was awesome. robert griffin, real deal.

hampering the search. >> they did say this morning the weather wasn't good, but that this afternoon it had started to break. and they did have helicopters up in the air. he loves the outside. loves the outdoors. loves to bike. he loves to run. he's very physically fit. >> he's a gentle giant. he's a wonderful person and we will keep our prayers alive. >> family members reported the 32-year-old hikers missing friday after they failed to catch their flight home from montana. 9 news spoke to peckens wife a short time ago. she's in montana tonight hoping for the best while helping with the search efforts. we also spoke with hiser's mother tonight who says her son and wife are expecting. they both work in veterinarian medicine. firefighters in prince george's county rescued a woman from a burning home this morning. tonight the woman is in critical condition, her home destroyed. surae chinn reports multiple fires kept county firefighters busy all of last night and this

morning. . >> you know, we're glad someone got there to get her out in time. >> reporter: smoke poured out of the basement in this home in upper marlboro around 3:00 sunday morning. firefighters found a 50-year- old woman inside. paramedics were able to revive her before taking her to the hospital with severe burns and smoke inhalation. >> i looked out the window and saw all the fire trucks and then i saw the smoke pouring out of her house. that was disturbing. >> reporter: the fire was burning quite awhile before firefighters arrived here and found the woman inside the home. they don't know the cause but do believe it was accidental. they do, however, know the cause of two other fires sunday morning that have them worried. around 1:00 in the morning, a driver on the beltway saw smoke billowing from a home on palco place and college park. the cause, a malfunctioning furnace. the homeowner had just flipped it on the first time this

season. >> when the weather turns colder we get extremely busy. >> got to start over from zero. >> reporter: a space heater nearly destroyed a 3-story apartment build being on windham road in hyattsville. >> you lost everything? >> yeah, except for some clothes and stuff. you know, it's smoked out. >> reporter: the red cross is helping the roughly 30 people who have been displaced. in prince george's county, surae chinn, 9 news now. >> it so happens this is the start of fire prevention week. prince george's county spokesman mark brady says heating appliances cause the most fires this time of year. an emotional homecoming today for a few dozen members of the d.c. national guards. they've been stationed in afghanistan since the beginning of the year. matt jablow is at the d.c. armory when the troops came home. >> reporter: it was all hugs and kisses and unbridled emotion today outside the

national guard armory where the many homemade signs said it all. >> how does it feel to be home? >> it feels awesome. >> reporter: welcome home. >> it feels great. >> reporter: after ten months in afghanistan. >> afghanistan was tough. >> reporter: the national guard's 273rd military police company was finally back on u.s. soil, greeted by thunderous cheers. >> welcome back. [ cheers and applause ] >> reporter: and a torrent of tears. when they arrived late this afternoon. >> i'm just really ecstatic. >> reporter: the 273rd military police company consists of 180 men and women, 70 of whom were deployed to afghanistan back in january. tonight all 70 are finally back home. specialists gerard was greeted by her mother. >> i can't believe i'm here. >> reporter: while specialist alveryo was met by his mother and wife. >> how does it feel to be home. >> overwhelming, excited. >> reporter: like almost all of their fellow company members they say they were proud to

serve their company overseas. >> it feels very good and important i was part of this mission. >> reporter: but there's no place like home. >> just can't explain how it feels to be back home in the u.s. it's just beautiful. >> reporter: in southeast washington, matt jablow, 9 news now. >> welcome home, thank you. a formal ceremony will be held this tuesday to honor the 273rd military police company at the d.c. armory. senator specter died this morning of complications from nonhodgkin's lymphoma. he served 30 years in the u.s. senate and once headed the judiciary committee. he was facing a rising conservative republican tide when he switched parties and ran in the democratic primary. he lost that race in 2010. here he sat down in 2009 for a town hall meeting. >> i think you put your finger on it. from my point of view, i'm trying to take the pulse of my

first skydiver to break the speed of sound jumped from 25 miles above earth and said sometimes we have to get really high to see how small we are. according to preliminary data, felix bumgardner reached a maximum speed of 833.9 miles per hour during his jump today over the new mexico desert. >> reporter: from the edge of space, austrian daredevil gave a salute before jumping.

he topped 833 miles per hour eaking the speed of sound. >> you travel so fast, but you don't really realize how fast you are. >> reporter: at times, he seemed to spin out of control. >> for some reason, it started spinning so fast and so violent that sometimes in between, i'm getting unconscious. >> reporter: 24 miles above new mexico, he became a human missile. he was able to reach such great heights thanks to that 55 story helium balloon. in order for a safe liftoff, winds could be no more than 3 miles per hour. on his way up, his breath fogged up his helmet and he complained the air inside his visor wasn't warm enough. >> i do not think i have face heating. >> reporter: the problem was never fixed. >> you see a little bit of frostbite there. for 30 minutes it looked like we would have to abort the mission. >> reporter: but the crew decided the jump was still safe. his free fall is now the highest and fastest known to man, but not the longest. it lasted 4 minutes and 20

seconds, 16 seconds shorter than joe kittinger's record set half a century ago. he helped train bumgardner and was there from liftoff to landing. roswell, new mexico. back on earth, a popular walking bath in rhode island were treated to a most unlikely site. a stolen suv was perched on a giant set of rocks at the bottom of a cliff. the stone staircase drops dozens of feet to an area overlooking the sea. the obvious problem, how to retrieve the suv from the dangerous spot. >> i would say it's one of the more difficult and challenging jobs you come across. you had to spin the car down on the rocks so we could get the wheels into the cliff. so we used it a clothesline technique. the there was a lot of people wanting to see it. it was a popular walking path and we were inconveniencing people for a little while. >> police say the vehicle had

been reported stolen on thursday. they believe the suv was pushed, not driven over the edge of the cliff. two bicyclists are hospitalized in serious condition after being struck by a pickup truck in arlington. it happened after noon today when the pickup truck traveling east on columbia pike tried to make a right hand u-turn. the vehicle jumped a median and hit the two cyclists as they headed south on four-mile run. the victims are both in their 60s. one suffered head trauma. the other has fractured ribs. the driver of that pickup remained at the scene. no charges have been filed at the time. a 17-year-old under arrest tonight in connection connection with a series of armed robberies. prince george's police arrested robinson in his home in green belt early this morning. he'll be charged as an adult. all three robbery victims were university of maryland students. the robberies took place in the span of an hour near the college park campus last wednesday. if you see strange activity

in the skies over washington late monday, don't be alarmed. norad says it will be conducting defense exercises beginning at midnight tomorrow into early tuesday morning. those exercises include a series of training flights. a warning tonight for visitors to the lake in rockville, maryland. they have a toxic substance known as micro system has been found in the water there. this can cause severe liver damage if injected. visitors should avoid contact with the water, and that goes for dogs and other pets as well. trouble with the law for a pittsburgh about steeler. and we'll find out about our weather as we head back to school.

ipad fans, apple will reportedly unveil a smaller, cheaper ipad on october 23rd. the screen of the ipad mini is expected to be half the size of the current ipad screen. analysts speculate the small ipad will cost about $300. the space shuttle endeavour is finally reached its new home. the shuttle pulled into the california science center after

making a 12-mile trek from the los angeles international airport through the downtown streets. the city cut down 400 trees, raised 100 power lines to give the five-story shuttle enough room for the journey. >> what a sight. >> unbelieve. >> we were talking about that a couple of weeks ago, how remarkable to see a space shuttle in person. if you get the opportunity you don't want to miss that. >> absolutely. great weather. >> yeah. it s a great weekend. very nice and mild. a little breezy but you can't ask for much better in october. >> have you got more coming? >> no, sorry. mild weather stays with us, but the beautiful dry weather is going by the wayside. let's take a look outside right now with the michael and son weather cam. it's 67 degrees. obviously still very mild. our normal high is 69. so we're still even close to that right now at 11:00. the dew point has risen up to 57 degrees because of the southerly flow right now at 16 miles per hour.

the humidity is 70% right now. and in your weather headlines, we have a cloudy and mild night obviously on tap. that's going to continue as we head through the overnight hours. rain arrives as we head into monday. it's still going to be warm, but we're going to have to deal with rain, maybe even some thunderstorms as we head into the afternoon. then it will be cooler and drier on tuesday as the cold front moves through. here's a look at your current temperatures. right now, it's 64 degrees in hagerstown. same temperature in leesburg and manassas. 67 in patuxent river. 64 in eston. mild through out the entire area but a cold front on the way will bring an end to that. you can see how the thunderstorms and showers are in a thin line. we're not expecting an all-day dreary kind of event here. we'll see on and off showers and the potential for a thunderstorm. we're going to keep it dry through the overnight hours but we will see an increase in cloud over. the monday morning rush hour starts off fine but then more showers move toward us from the

west. you can see we really fill things in here in hagerstown and frederick. the ride along 66 coming into town might be a little bit drizzly as you're heading through the morning hours. by lunchtime, the bulk of the rain is basically aligned with the d.c. metro and points north and east and then down towards fredericksburg, we'll see some of those showers, maybe even embedded thunderstorms here as the cold front continues to sweep to the south and southeast. so those cold fronts -- sorry, so those thunderstorms along with the cold front could actually make a few thunderstorms as you're picking up the kids off of the bus tomorrow afternoon and then all the thunderstorm activity slips to the south and east of us as we head toward dinnertime on monday. overnight tonight an increase in cloud over. mild and breezy. 53 to 49 degrees for your overnight lows. as you're waking up tomorrow morning, just a shower, not a big deal. temperatures in the 50s and 60s with the south/southwest breeze at 20 miles per hour

persisting. monday afternoon that's when we're looking for the potential for a thunderstorm. still mild with high between 65 and 73. temperatures will be pretty much exactly where they were today, except we'll have that rain. it's also going to be more humid tomorrow with that wind becoming more westerly as we head into the afternoon. so checking out the zones on monday, 65 degrees in cumberland. it will get up to 68 inwinchester. 72 in culpeper. same temperature in manassas tomorrow. closer to the beltway, 73 in d.c. and andrews air force base. 72 in eston and 73 in cambridge for your monday with the greatest potential for thunderstorms being from about the district south and east. we are going code yellow tomorrow. it's not a big weather event but where you do get thunderstorms, of course, that will be quite an inconvenience to your daily plans. a high of 73. on tuesday breezy and cooler. code green with a high of 66. wednesday looks very nice. can't ask for much better than
