and look under our campaign 2012 tab. former u.s. senator arlen specter of pennsylvania has died. he was 82 years old. a family member says specter died sunday morning of complications from nonhodgkins lymphoma. he spent 30 years in the senate and once headed the judiciary committee. he was facing a rising republican tide when he switched parties and ran in the dkic primary. -- democratic primary. he lost that race in 2010. here he is at a 2009 town hall meeting. >> from my point of view, i'm trying to take the pulse of my constituents and trying to get the specifics on what they have in mind and accommodate them as much as i can. but change is awesome. change brings back uncertainty. and i think a lot of people are afraid. >> a funeral is scheduled for tomorrow in penn valley, pennsylvania. it will be open to the public. specter is survived by his

wife, two sons and four granddaughters. at 5:05 in other news, the trial of two prince george's county police officers accused of beating a university of maryland student after a basketball game begins today. >> the beating happened two years ago during a wild celebration which erupted after maryland defeated duke. kristin fisher joins us live from college park with a preview. good morning, kristin. >> reporter: good morning. prince george's county police officers, reginald baker and james harrison have been charged with first degree assault, second degree assault and misconduct in office for what they allegedly did on these streets over two years ago. remember, what had just happened was maryland's men's basketball team had just upset duke and thousands of students celebrated by partying in the streets. police had said that students were rioting but they claim police overreacted. 44 people were arrested but it was a video that surfaced more than a year later and changed

everything and led to these indictments. the video was taken from a dorm room window and shows these two police officers beating a then 21-year-old student john mckenna. at the times the officers said mckenna and another student had struck the officers and jurldz their horses. they -- injured their horses. they also said the horses kicked the students inflicting those injuries. in the video you can clearly see that never happened. instead the video shows mckenna dancing down the sidewalk and poaching an officer on -- approaching an officer on the horse. that's when the two officers in full riot gear moved in and strike him several times. the two officers have been on paid administrative leave. their police powers suspended ever since they were indicted in september of 2011. now this morning opening statements are set to start in their trial in prince george's county circuit court in upper marlboro. jessica, andrea? >> all right, kristin. thank you for that update. kristin will have more later on in our newscast.

the self-proclaimed master mind of the september 11 attacks khalid sheikh mohamed will appear at a hearing today. the five-day hearing will address a number of key disputes including whether the u.s. government can sensor information it has deemed classified. the hearings will be held in guantanamo bay, cuba and broadcast live at fort meed, maryland. the broadcast will have a 40- second delay in order to allow a military sensor to block any information deemed classified. the time right now is 5:07. and i am watching your money. stocks are starting a new week today after their worst week since june. mixed earnings sent a jump in confidence. the government is releasing the retail sales report for september. it is a busy week for economic reports. we're also going to see if the recovery in the housing market is taking hold with new figures this week on home sales and

construction. as for the major averages, checking the numbers the dow standing this morning at 13,328, inched up two points on friday. nasdaq was off by 5 and the s&p 500 was down by 4. for the first time in recent history, asia is the wealthiest region in the world. according to the new global wealth report, asia has $74 trillion in wealth. that surpasses europe which saw its wealth levels plunge 14% over the past year. the number of millionaires in china is expected to double by 2017. apple reportedly takes the wraps off a smaller, cheaper ipad at an event on october 23, about a week away. the screen is expected to be about half the size of the ipad. analysts speculate the smaller ipad will be priced at about $300. compare that to amazon's kindle fire which is half the size of the current ipad. it starts at about $200. google and barnes and noble also sell tablets in the same

neal peculiarens of hearn -- peckens of herndon, virginia and jason hiser have not been seen or heard from since friday. 18 inches of snow in the park are hampering the search. family members reported the 32- year-old hikers missing friday after they failed to catch their flight home from montana. peckens and hiser both work in veterinarian medicine. a pittsburgh steelers rookie defensive lineman is in trouble with the law. police arrested alameda ta'amu after he led police on a car chase through a pittsburgh neighborhood. he tried to run over several officers and then swiped several parked cars before crashing his lincoln navigator. this morning ta'amu is facing a long list of charges. the space shuttle endeavour is finally at its new home. the shuttle pulled into the california science center this weekend after making a 12-mile trek from los angeles international airport through the streets of downtown l.a. the city even cut down 400 trees and raised 100 power

northern mississippi valley. minneapolis 41 but lots of 30s. with the cold front coming, we're going to see a little bit after cooldown leer for the next couple of days thanks to this storm system going through the great lakes. a little bit of snow is mixing in. parts of northern michigan but for the most part this is just a rain maker and the showers down in eastern tennessee, western north carolina, these will come through here later on this morning into the afternoon and again as i said, there could even be a rumble of thunder. as we look at the forecast today yellow alert for the afternoon. we're -- the showers could impact the commute. 73 degrees. tonight we're back in the 50- degree range in town so 40s north and west. mid-60s but nice tomorrow. 70 on wednesday. looks good. thursday also looks good at 72. perhaps another shower friday but then the weekend is looking nice and dry. temps in the 60s. let's check in with monika samtani at 5:18. she's got timesaver traffic. >> thank so you much. the northbound side of the gw parkway was shut down over the weekend with construction north of the key bridge.

clarksburg. traffic is moving well through germantown as well. i'll be back with more at 5:39. back to you guys. the trial of two prince george's county police officers accused of beating a university of maryland student after a terps-duke basketball game begins today, two years after the alleged assault took place. >> the alleged beating of john mckenna was captured by another student who recorded the incident if the dorm window. kristin fisher joins us live from college park with a preview. good morning, kristin. >> reporter: good morning. initially this student offmckenna was one of 33 people arrested that night. he was charged with disorderly conduct and assault on a police officer. but then a year later, a video surfaced that changed everything. here it is. it shows two prince george's county police officers reginald baker and james harrison shoving mckenna against a wall and then beating him several times with their bat tons. -- batons. but in the police report

initially fired, the officers had stated he was the one who hit police and that his injuries were caused by one of their horses kicking him. after a year long investigation involving the f.b.i., those two officers were indicted and charged with first degree assault, second degree assault, and misconduct in office. the night this happened, police were already on high alert. it had become something of a tradition here at the university of maryland for students to flood route 1 after a big basketball game like the one that happened that night. in year's passed, they caused considerable damage. they set fires, uprooted street signs, things like that. police were prepared for it and they accused the students of attacking officers and insighting mayhem but students say police simply overreacted, especially in the case of john mckenna. the trial for those to officers is going to start this morning in prince george's county circuit court. opening arguments are set for 9:00 a.m. jessica, andrea? >> all right, kristin fisher reporting live on this story.

the meningitis you outbreak is growing. there are 50 new cases of the disease. the centers for disease control says more than 200 people in 14 states including maryland and virginia have gotten sick. 15 have died. the outbreak has been linked to steroid shots used for back pain made by a specialty pharmacy in massachusetts. time right now is 5:34. i'm watching your money. consumer confidence climbed to a five-year high in september. the last time americans felt this confident about the economy was before the recession. the university of michigan survey found confidence is up because of a stronger stock market. signs of a recovery in the housing market. a sharp rise in gasoline costs drove up wholesale prices 1.1% last month, but if you take out energy and food costs, prices were essentially flat. analysts say the report suggests inflation remains in check. and it will cost you a penny more to mail a letter next year. the cash strapped u.s. postal

good morning. welcome back to 9 news now. our time is 5:44 on this monday morning. i'm andrea roane. i'm jessica doyle. howard bernstein is along with your weather first on this monday morning. >> and a mild monday morning. rib the sand out of -- rub the sand out of your eyes and get moving. the weekend is over. it looks like a decent week except maybe this afternoon when we'll have our best chance of showers all week long. this morning you won't need a jacket. it's warm enough with temps in the 60s but still about an hour and a half until the sunrise. there may be a stray shower in far western and southwestern areas as we head into the next couple, three hours. but i think much of the morning stays dry here. it will be the afternoon that features the better chance for showers and maybe even a rumble of thunder. so temperatures will climb to the lower 70s for the lunch hour. i think that's going to be about the high for the day. with showers around this afternoon, that will help cool things off into the upper 60s.

pam loma virus. it can cause cervical cancers and warts. the journal of pediatrics says there's no evidence to support concerns that using the vaccine would lead to more sexual activity and possibly more pregnancies or sexually transmitted diseases. another study in pediatrics confirms what parents have known since the beginning of time. kids who get less than the recommended amount of sleep are more likely to be cranky. researchers found children inches 7 to 11 who slept an average of 54 minutes less were more temperamental. they also found youngsters were able to regulate their emotions and focus in schools if they were given an extra 27 minutes of sleep. an estimated 64% of school age children go to bed later than 9:00 p.m. experts recommend children sleep at least 10 to 11 hours a night. could have saved money on that study. just ask us. >> it would be nice to have that sleep. the nation's largest muslims civil liberties group is answering back with its own message after an anti-muslim ad
