6:22 am
responsibility. let's take a look at your video. >> so you have the contracts. >> oh, everything is right in here. >> he just got his license. >> is he here? >> yeah, he's upstairs in his room. >> no more than one friend in the car at any time. no cell phone use. no alcohol. >> really this is about laying down the rules. >> absolutely. >> what is the key advice you give to parents? >> interactive teaching. really the thing you have to do is you have to hold your teen accountable. driving is the ultimate responsibility. you're driving a vehicle that's several thousand pounds that can get up to over a hundred miles an hour in a chaotic environment. the key is lay down strong rules, no using a phone, no texting, not driving with other teens in the car, making sure you're driving where you're supposed to be driving in addition to frankly not only
6:23 am
laying down the rules but having the parent having a role. make sure you build each element of teaming of driving. drive with your team. it really is thinking about any other life skill. parents should teach driving just like any other life skill. >> do you think, though, the law should be stronger? >> absolutely. a number of states are doing graduated driver's licenses where you have two to three levels of licensing where you have more restrictions on the early parts of the drives experience of a teen. and you build those skills up until you receive your full license. and really those graduated driving licenses which includes not driving at night, zero tolerance for alcohol, no alcohol at all, making sure you're driving with only an adult, not another teen, all those things really sort of build a foundation of safety for teaching a new teen how to drive. >> in the state of virginia a teen gets their license in front of a judge and the
6:24 am
parents and the judge hands the license to the parents and says this is yours. >> absolutely. it's really that great line of responsibility because really what you're thinking about, even though a lot of parents are real excited to have your teen being able to drive themselves to swim practice and all the activities, it does give the family more freedom but it's simply that. it's the ultimate responsibility and we want parents to be able to take that responsibility just as much as the kids do. >> it's a rite of passage but you've got to have regular feedback sessions as well. >> absolutely. the key to it is that you're just -- just like you teach anything that's important in your teen's life, your child's life, you teach driving exactly the same way. strong accountability, constant connection, constant feedback and also being an example. not only teaching your teen being a good driver but what you have to do? be a good driver yourself. >> and don't be on the phone and tell them not to be on the phone. >> that doesn't work in this environment. >> thank so you much for being
6:25 am
with us, especially during this important week. >> thank you, monika. we'll be back in a few minutes.
