culpeper and 54 here in d.c. we're going into the 60s. 60ish up in hagueerstown. 64 leesburg and 65 easton. monika samtani, 6:00 a.m., how are the roads looking? >> es i hate so say they're looking great because i feel like i'm tempting something but they look great. if you're planning to head around town, i'm happy to say that all you have is that volume. we can deal with that as long as there are no major incidents to report. you see all that yellow on 270 and orange. so that means it's slowing down basically out of frederick. all of you trying to get through clarksburg before the pace improves. beyond that you'll be okay. let's show what you it looks like once you're on the beltway at river road. you've got traffic moving well all the way the american legion bridge and into tysons corner. back over to the maps this time out west. no problems 066. it's just -- on 66. it's just the long slow lineup. if you're planning to head to the roosevelt bridge, lanes are open into downtown.
6:01 am
i'll be back with more traffic at 6:11. back to you. at 6:00 a.m. we start with some good news this morning. the two hikers from virginia who went missing in montana have been found alive and well. >> this is exactly what we want to be reporting. neal peckens of herndon and jason hiser of richmond were found late yesterday afternoon alive. kristin fisher joins us live from the tellite center with more on their rescue. good morning, kristin. >> reporter: good morning. what a relief. you know, these two men had been missing in the back country of glacier national park for four days. and anybody who has been hiking knows that so much can go wrong when you're out in the back country. hypothermia, grizzly bears, getting lost. we still don't know exactly what happened to these to men but that really doesn't matter for this family because all they care about is that their loved ones are coming home safe and sound. now, i want to show you a picture. here we go. this is a picture of one of the men, jason hiser from richmond right after he was rescued around 4:30 yesterday
6:02 am
afternoon. this image was posted on a facebook page dedicated to finding him. you can see he looks great. big smile, no injuries. here's a shot of him with his friend and hiking part near neal peckens from herndon. that's neal on the left. jason on the right. the two mehad met at the virginia-maryland regional college of veterinary medicine. over the years they've taken several hiking trips together. so these guys were relatively experienced hikers but they were reported missing on friday when they failed to catch their flight home. and here they are with their rescue teams that spent days looking for them. about 50 people searched for them in terrible weather, high winds, limited visibility. nearly two feet of snow on the trails. here's glacier national park spokeswoman. >> it's high fives and goose bumps down the arms. it's just -- it's so wonderful to know they're fine and doing well. >> reporter: the big question this morning is still what happened? did they get lost? how and where were they found?
6:03 am
so far the national park service has not released that information but again doesn't matter much to family and friends. all they care about is that their loved ones have been found and are no longer missing, especially since jason's wife is eight months pregnant. can you imagine what a scare this has been for her. jessica, andrea? >> can't even imagine, chris continue. kristin fisher live in the satellite center with really fantastic news. later today, the woman at the heart of the debate over same-sex marriage on gallaudet's campus plans to speak out. angela mccomes skill was placed on leave after -- mccaskill was placed on leave after signing a petition to get the question on the ballot. she felt it was an issue that should be decided by the democratic process. secretary of state hillary clinton takes full responsibility for any security lapses that contributed to the death of ambassador to libya christopher stevens and three
6:04 am
other americans. they were killed last month during an attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi. republicans on capitol hill have been criticizing the white house for its handling of the security at the consulate. secretary clinton addressed the criticism saying the president and vice president are not involved in those security decisions. tonight president obama and mitt romney square off for the second of three debates. romney's performance in the first debate helped him surge in the polls. this time president obama is promising a more spirited role. round two of the debates is a town hall format. it will take place at hofstra university. students are excited about the chance to get to ask the president and the republican nominee some questions. mitt romney won the coin toss so he's going to get the first question of the night. andrea? >> jessica, the swing states continue to be the focus of both candidates. the latest "u.s.a.
6:05 am
today" gallop poll of swing states shows governor romney has a slight lead over president obama among all likely voters. among registered voters in swing states, the president still has the edge. and when it comes to likely women voters, president obama has a very slight lead but it's governor romney the lead whether it comes to likely male voters. the margin of error is plus or minus 4% so this is still a statistical tie. as we've been saying, there is a lot at stake with this second debate. joining me this morning all the way from iowa is political columnist kathy from the des moines register, our gannett- owned sister paper. the format as we said, ceapt, is a town hall de-- kathy, is a town hall debate with the voters. we're having some mike problems. howard is going to help us out. thank you very much. howard. it's town hall format so we have the voters asking some questions but it's really only 11 people who are going to get
6:06 am
to ask questions. usually the voters have totally different issues on their mind than what the media and political analysts have. so does this debate favor one candidate over the other? >> it makes it a little harder to predict. one thing about this town hall format is that i think it's going to make it a little more challenging for barack obama to come back and be more aggressive than he was in the first debate. he was criticized for being too passive, didn't go after mitt romney enough. in the town hall format, that can be tough because you have actual voters who are asking those questions. if you brush aside the question and go after your opponent, you might be seen as disrespecting this person who asked the question. so i think it's going to be kind of a tightrope for barack obama in particular to be a lot more aggressive. >> you talked in the column about he cannot be a cold fish showing up a second time. how much did that first debate really hurt the president?
6:07 am
>> we see the numbers closing together. ohio changed almost overnight getting better for governor romney. >> well, i do think it got better for governor romney. there was a definite -- people were just pretty much unanimous that the president lost this debate. and so if it had been more of a draw, i think it wouldn't have had a big effect. in iowa barack obama was holding on to a very slim lead of four percentage points, a big battleground state. the candidates are there all the time. but most candidates -- but most had already made up their mind. early voting is going on. you need to have decided voters at this point. what this did was throw a big pail of cold water on democrats. it made it harder for them to generate the enthusiasm, to get friends, neighbors, everybody on your social need came list to get out and vote.
6:08 am
>> any down side for governor romney in the town hall format or keeping the momentum going? >> you know, one of the challenges for governor romney is to show that he can emphasize with voters, that he cares about people like me from the voters' perspective. in iowa he didn't do well in our poll when it comes to caring about people like me. he needs to show empathy with the voters. the town hall format allows him the opportunity to do that. we know president obama is good at that. he may not have to work very hard to show romney up at being warm and empathetic to voters. >> we do have to go but second chances, the second presidential debate, is it possible to do a doover? you have seen that in the past where a candidate fared worst in the beginning and came back? >> oh, yeah. i think that a lot of times sitting presidents don't do that well in the first debate. they don't spend as much time in preparation. they maybe think well, i know the issues. i don't have to practice as
6:09 am
much. that lack of preparation clearly hurt president obama and a lot of it was performance stuff that's easy to fix. i do expect he will give a much better showing tonight. >> we'll be watching. thank you very much for coming in from des moines and talking with us. again 9news now is teaming up with our other sister paper "u.s.a. today" for tonight's debate beginning at 9:00 p.m. "u.s.a. today" reporters will be live blogging about what the candidates say. and you can see that live via our website wusa9.com. make sure your television is tuned to channel 9 to watch the debate. also starting at 9:00. and log on to wusa9.com to take part in the conversation online. then anita and derek will be back for 11:00 as they fact check what the candidates say with the "u.s.a. today" fact checking team and we will of course have more analysis tomorrow morning on 9news now. right now we'll be back with more weather and traffic after this.

6:15 am
to $1.32 off. >> it doesn't sound like a lot of money. >> but when you add up the amount of books you bought in the time frame, it could be a nice little-- >> sometimes the refunds are 5 cents on the dollar so this is actually quite significant. >> it wasn't something i was counting on. >> found money. we have a good day today weather wise. sunshine. it's going to be on the cool side but we had heavy rain in spots. that's long gone. starting out the day with a look at the bus stop forecast. i think you need a jacket this morning. been on the weather terrace this morning and certainly it is a little brink out there. temperatures in some spots down in the mid-40s. the warm spot by the bay 55. most of us are really closer to that 50-degree mark. sunrise 7:19. setting just after 6:30. we're going to see sunshine today and 60 degrees by lunch time. highs will make it into the mid- 60s. 64 by 4:00 with an 8:00 reading back down to 58 degrees. we don't have this much color yet on the tidal basin.

6:17 am
country keeping the storms well to the north of us. they'll continue to ride basically due east. for us a couple of shower chances by the time we get into thursday and friday but the weekend should look pretty good. today 66. dan we'll be in the 40s in town with upper 30s in the coldest spots with light winds. nice tomorrow, about 70 with a mix of sun and clouds. for thursday shower could be here before the day is over, especially out west. 72 degrees. friday also a shower threat about 70. then the weekend, you've got plans, going to hit one of the walks, i'll be downtown with kristen berset at the breast cancer walk. monika, jess and andrea at the diabetes walk. the terps game, 64. got the als walk on sunday. then monday 75. so pretty nice seven-day. it's 6:17. here comes monika with timesaver traffic. not so nice traffic wise unfortunately. we've got quite a few incidents to tell you about. >> you jinxed it. >> i think i jirntioned it according to -- jinxed it according to howard.

6:23 am
today" column that rg3 set a bad example by playing. whether yoagree with that or not, there no question his performance sunday was electrifying. president obama even commented on how remarkable he was and that he helped boost the city's spirits after that nats loss on friday. rg3 hasn't thrown too many touchdowns this season, just five in six weeks or in six games, but what he can do with his legs just adds to his versatility making it hard for opponents to game plan. >> any time you have a quarterback that has a threat of making a play with his legs, a lot of time you'll have defenses spying the quarterback. you know, they want to play man coverage but they don't want to rush everybody because they've got to count for the quarterback just like we saw yesterday. >> up 95 in charm city, to major injuries leaves the big boys in an already struggling baltimore ravens defense. cornerback ladarius webb,

i'm andrea roane. i'm jessica doyle in for mike hydeck. meteorologist howard bernstein is live on the weather terrace with our forecast. he does have the jacket on. >> a definite chill out here this morning. we're barely in the low 50s here in northwest. it's 54 national. some mid-40s in some of the suburbs. consider that when you get ready to step out this morning. the day planner, we're looking to the east on our weather camera in tysons corner. just starting to see a little glow in the eastern sky. sunrise not till 7:19. so 50 minutes until that happens. going to be a nice sunny start with 60 by noon. 64 at 5:00. i think we'll manage to get up to 66 for that high today in between hours. but with the northwest wind at 10, you probably will need a light jacket or sweat shirt if you're going to be out. as far as yesterday, we had a cold front which went through helping to kick off the showers we had. the heavy weather stayed well south and east. behind the front the drier, cooler hair has moved in making for a nice morning here with a few clouds in the mountains.
6:30 am

6:31 am
from the roadway. so again watch out for that. it looks like traffic is now being set free but again 3 to four-mile, damage is done, northbound 95. we'll go further north on our vdot camera and show you what it looks like if you're planning to head across the 14th street bridge. no problems here but if you're planning to head across the bridge span, it's just going to be heavy across the potomac river. i'll be back with more information on that accident coming up in my next report at 6:43. back to you. >> thank you, monika. cbs this morning is 30 minutes away. we can guess what they're talking about this morning. >> norah o'donnell joins us from new york with a preview. good morning, norah. >> good morning. we're looking at what it will take to win tonight's town hall debate. plus, why are both sides concerned about the format and the moderator. also secretary of state hillary clinton is now accepting blame for security lapses at the u.s. consulate that was attacked in libya. margaret brennan asks her to explain the different stories coming from the obama administration.

6:33 am
long search. about 50 people spent three days searching for these men in just terrible weather. there was intense winds, lots of snow, about 18 inches of snow on the ground. here is glacier national park spokeswoman denise. >> it's a great feeling to know they're out of the back country, they're safe and with their families. >> reporter: check out this picture. it is a picture of -- well, not that picture. let's jump one picture forward. do we have it? no. that's not it either. there it is. these are the two missing men right here on the left is the hiker that was missing -- this is -- excuse me. he's from herndon on the right. jason hiser from richmond. they met at the regional college of veterinary medicine. over the years they've taken several hiking trims together. these guys were relatively experienced hikers but again something, we don't know what
6:34 am
yet, something went wrong. here they are with the rescue team that spent days looking for them. about 50 people in total. again we still don't know exactly where they were found, how they were found, were they missing. we just don't know but the national park service on their website says they will be releasing some of that information a little bit later today. i tell you what. if you are the wives of these two men because they're both married, 32 years old, if you're the wives of these two men, i don't know, are you going to let them go hiking again and if you do, i bet they'll be strapping gps devices on their body or in their backpacks. andrea, jessica, perfect christmas present for these two men. >> exactly. starting with thanksgiving giving thanks for their safe return. unbelievable. >> i'm a little too co- dependent to let them go for that long. >> i'm figuring the wives are probably into hiking as well so that's probably why they're still together. we have a developing story we want to bring you now. a rape suspect is in custody in
6:35 am
frederick of police say he was beaten by the victim's friends. police say upon trel -- montrel lieu we raped a whip sunday. he grabbed the woman as she was getting out of her car, raped her and forced her back into her car and drove to another part of town. the victim was able to jump out of the moving car and she ran for help. friends of the woman found out what happened. not only did they help police develop a profile of the suspect. they found him and they chased him down. the suspect was stabbed, beaten and held until police arrived. bowie is facing a list of charges including rape, carjacking, and kidnapping. the pakistani girl who captured the spirit of women around the world is now in a british hospital. malala yousafzai was shot in the head by the taliban because she encouraged girls to get an education. a crew wheeled the 14-year-old into britain's queen elizabeth hospital a week after she was

insight into your boss. here's the scenario. you're walking down the hall. you see the boss and he or she smiles at you. is that a good thing? maybe. maybe not. a recent study says researchers from the university of california found people who feel powerful tend not to smile back at important people. instead they're saving their smiles for people lower down on the pecking order and their smiles were bigger. one researcher said smiles can be akin to throwing a bone to a low status person. the researchers believe the people who feel powerful trial to exert their dominance by not appearing friendly to those who might be perceived as a threat. people who feel like they have no power at all smiled at everybody. but we can't help but smiling at our own bosses, can we? >> we're very grateful for our bosses. >> they're wonderful. >> we're not smiling. thank you mark. thank you, fred. >> you're both intelligent and handsome men.
6:38 am
>> don't smile. >> we'll smile. our time right now is coming up on 6:38 when the news continues. just about every woman loves to shop. next, find out how a weekend of shopping at one major department store could be the key to curing breast cancer. >> and if you're in the market for a watch, looking to inflate your -- insulate your home or dire need of a night out on the town, you'll want to stick around for my daily deals when we come back.
6:42 am
it is 6:42. 54 degrees. women come back. monika -- welcome back. monika here with timesaver traffic. lots of information, emily for you virginia drivers. first of all, there had been a problem with a motorcycle accident on lee highway at north harrison street in arlington, but most importantly, an accident on the northbound side of i-95 at the prince william parkway. although it was moved out of the road, there's about a five- mile backup on the northbound side of i-95. then another one. let's take a live look from our sky 9. it's in lorton in the hov lanes blocking the left lane. this was a motorcycle and
6:43 am
passenger vehicle. the motorcyclist is complaining of some wrist pain so therefore emergency medical emergency equipment has arrived on the scene. you can see the right lane squeezing by in the hov lanes so that's going to slow down as well. so now you've got two separate very long backups as you can see on the northbound side of i- 95. over to the northbound side of 395 on our vdot camera, here's what it looks like across the 14th street bridge. this is incident free but slow traffic here and we'll take a look at our maps again, this time all the way on to 270. look at all the red. it's normal. there's nothing stopped in the road except for the car in front of you. air going to go about 16 miles an hour on the southbound side leaving frederick most of the way toward 109 and 121 before the pace picks up. one more last live look outside if you're planning to head here. this is what it looks like at route 109. as i said slow and heavy but the lanes are open. i'll be back with a look at the big picture at 6:58. >> thank you, monika. it is coming up on 6:44.
