answer more questions on libby next monday at the third and final debate which is focused entirely on foreign policy. randall pinkston, cbs news, hempstead, new york. >> president obama will be on the campaign trail today hoping to capitalize on his debate performance. he will campaign in the swing states of iowa and ohio. the president picked up a win in ohio tuesday when the supreme court sided with democrats and refused to block early voting in ohio on the last weekend before the election. mitt romney will also try to capitalize on his performance in our area spending the day focusing on the commonwealth. he'll have rallies in chesapeake and leesburg and in the leesburg rally will be at ida lee park. doors open at 4:30. the event begins at 6:30 tonight. you do need a ticket. you can get them at the victory offices in arlington, loudoun, or sterling. we have all the addresses right there on your screen for picking up tickets. about 40 students of the university of maryland who want

hero. he grew up in the bay area and went to college at nearby berkley. >> he had a very challenging job, always came home. >> reporter: the lifelong bachelor served as a diplomat in the middle east and first went to libya in 2007. he returned last year and worked with rebels who would overthrow mao mar qaddafi. former secretary of state george schultz said he lost his life serving his country. >> we're here to celebrate the immense accomplishments this man has made for us. >> reporter: stevens' family said they received an outpouring of support from around the world including letters from the libyan people. >> he built the bridge between libya and the united states. >> my name is chris stevens and i'm the new u.s. ambassador to libya. >> reporter: stevens made this video to introduce himself to libyans. just four months later he was killed by a group linked to al qaeda. his death is at the enter of an international investigation but at the memorial service, friends and family remember the good times. his younger brother tom said he was a humble man who never

sought credit for his accomplishments. >> so my big brother, my best friend, i'll see you next time. >> reporter: stevens will be buried during a private ceremony next month. edward lawrence for cbs news, san francisco. >> ambassador christopher stevens was the first diplomat to be killed in the line of duty since 1979. there is no place like home home and the two hikers stranded in montana's glacier national park are back home. neal peckens and his friend jason hiser landed yesterday evening at richmond international airport. they used their outdoor survival skills to stay alive while they were stranded in harsh weather. search teams found them after four days. a pakistani teenager shot in the head by the taliban is making good progress in her recovery. doctors in britain say they're impressed with malala yousafzai's strength and resilience. a taliban gunman shot the 14- year-old last week as she rode home on her school bus. they say she deserved to die because she spoke out against

the terror group. and taliban insurgents say if malala recovers, she'll try to kill her again. a second death has been reported after receiving a tainted steroid injection. members of congress want to know if the company violated any laws or regulations. the nationwide meningitis outbreak has killed more than 15 people and sickened more than 200 others. here's a look at some other things making news now. the ground was moving in new england last night. a 4.0 magnitude quake struck three miles west of hollis center, maine. it was felt in vermont, new hampshire and massachusetts and as far south as rhode island and connecticut. so far no injuries have been reported. not looking good for the pinstripes. the detroit tyingers are just one win away from -- tyingers are just one win away from

going to the world series. they held on to beat the new york yankees 2-1 last night. the win gives detroit a 3-0 lead in the best of 7 american american league championship series. reliever phil coate finished the game. hockey players have been locked out for two months. millions of dollars have been lost by both players and owners. yesterday the owners offered the players association a 50-50 revenue split agreement to try and make sure there is a season. the deal would be contingent on the season starting november 2 and all 82 games being played. that means teams would play at least one extra game every five weeks. the players association has about ten days to make a decision. it is 4:37. we're in for a cool yet very nice mild day ahead. howard is back in two minutes with the forecast. >> at 4:41, the head of one of

coming up in my next report, i'll tell you about some emergency road work on military road that could impact the morning rush hour at 4:47. time right now is 4:41. i am watching your money on wall street. investors would like to keep this trend going today. stocks enjoyed a back-to-back rally following better than expect the profits from big names including goldman saks, johnson & johnson and mattel. the dow starts today at 13,551. nasdaq was up by almost 37 points. the s&p added 15 points. we'll have to see if the rally could fade. intel and i.b.m. reported disappointing profits after market closed. citigroup is not offering an explanation of the sudden resignation of the c.e.o. there are reports he clashed with the bank's board over strategy and performance. shareholders have also objected to his pay package. get this.

good morning. welcome back to nine fine now. 4:41 this morning. this time you will need the light jacket to brave the cold. cool winds. >> 30s north and west. i have my -- i would have my gloves on if i was outside. it's closer to 50 here in town. the 30s are well up north. it's going to be a decent day. yesterday 65. today perhaps 70 before this one is over. one thing we've got going against us is some high clouds that are going to come across.

if we get enough of those, that could limit the sunshine just a little bit. here's a look at the bus stop forecast. certainly a chill out there. partly to mostly cloudy. again these are high clouds. some spots maybe overcast. other areas will see a lot of stars with temps ranging from the upper 30s to about 50 at the bus stop. that sunrise not until 7:20 this afternoon. looking at the day planner, we'll start in the upper 40s here by 8:00, but by noon all the way up to 64 grees. south wind at about 5 miles an hour. so a pleasant although slightly cool lunch hour. 68 by 4:00. potentially we could poke to 70 for the high. winds going southeast 5 to 10 miles an hour. back to the upper 50s at 8:00. i think tonight is not going to be as chilly as what we're dealing with this morning. we were down to 36 in winchester. it's 39 in gaithersburg. 43 baltimore. even on the eastern shore, easton right now 41. fredricksburg was 44 degrees. a quiet morning looking outside on our michael & son weather

camera. not much traffic yet on a dry wisconsin avenue. 49 officially with clear skies at reagan national. no wind to speak of. humidity 83%. our weather headlines today a bit milder. you'll need the sunglasses in spite of the high clouds that have been coming across the region. there could be a late shower tomorrow but it really looks like tomorrow night rain will be likely. so if you haven't done your fall fertilizer on your lawn and you're thinking about timing, i think today or tomorrow would be pretty good times so it gets soaked in there thursday night into the lawn. a couple of things. this is hurricane paula or what once was hurricane paula. if this storm system coming across the northern plains, that's what's going to give us our rain showers on thursday night. this morning we've got rain from colorado all the way up toward north dakota, moving in toward minnesota. this batch of showers in ohio and michigan, that's going to stay north of us. look at all the high clouds that are around coming out of the south through the ohio valley coming across us this morning.

great. you do want to be aware military road there's going to be emergency road work. it will be closed in both directions later this morning at 42nd street between 6:30 and 7:30 a.m. that's right near friendship heights or east of friendship heights. i know that definitely has an impact on wisconsin avenue, even when it's shut down for an hour. so be aware of that. let's go to some live pictures. first of all, we'll take a look at the american legion bridge on the west side of town. things are looking great here. no issues to report between bethesda and tysons coarn and pretty much all over-- corner and pretty much all over constructions that been cleared up. this is the time of the morning to deal with 95. this is the only time when it's not too crowded. we'll go up to the 395 corridor, duke street up to the 14th street bridge. that's looking good as well. i'll be back with more traffic coming up in a few minutes at 4:55. first, this week is national teen driver safety week. david strictland, administrator

for the national highway traffic safety administration was live here when he said one of their biggest pushes is combating distracted driving. so what do teens think about their performance behind the wheel? we let young drivers from whitman high school in bethesda speak for themselves. >> i listen to music. i don't think it distracts me but it's a factor definitely. when i have friends in the car, sometimes i'm focused on conversation with them but i usually keep my eyes on the road when i'm talking to them. >> very interesting conversations with the students and their parents about distracted driving. we'll hear their very candid responses at 5:30. we also did an informal poll and asked them what they thought was their biggest distraction while driving. we want to know what you think it is for teens. is it loud music, is it texting or is it friends in the car? go to our wusa9 facebook and tell us what you think. we'll air some of your responses later this morning. back to you guys. >> thank you, monika. a gallaudet university administrator is speaking out for the first time since being

placed on leave for signing a petition to put a same-sex marriage amendment on the ballot. dr. angela mccaskill is chief diversity officer and she wants to be reinstated. her attorney says she's not antigay though they wouldn't say where she stands on the issue of same-sex marriage because it's not relevant. they are demanding the university reinstate her to the position of chief diversity office. we're told mccaskill signed the petition to put the same-sex marriage issue on the ballot because she's pro-democracy. here's what she had to say. >> they have allowed misinformation to be circulated throughout the campus community. they have attempted to intimidate me. they have tarnished my reputation and my 24 years of service. my record at gallaudet

university speaks for itself. and i ask to be judged by what i have done. >> university president dr. her witnesses also released a -- herwitz also released a statement. while i expect that a resolution of this matter can be reached that will enable dr. mccaskill to continue as our chief diversity officer. this will require that she and the university community work together to respond to the concerns that have been raised. we'll keep you updated on this story. according to a new study in the journal of the american medical association, cholesterol levels have been improving in american adults over the past 20 years. researchers found chest recall levels have dropped it 1988 and 2010. she say more people are taking lip bid lower -- lipid lowering medications and many people are making healthy lifestyle changes and reducing the amount

of transfatty acids in their diets. habitual drinking does more to shorten life than smoking does, especially among women. researchers in germany say death rates among alcohol dependent women are nearly five times higher than the general population. the average age of death for women in the study was 60 years old. tobacco researchers at massachusetts general hospital say many smokers have failed to quit because they and their doctors have not used existing treatments in the most effective way. a new study says only a third of smokers who try to quit would behavioral support or medication. both of them proven to be effective. the study also says combining two nicotine replacement products such as patches, gum and loss essentials is safe -- loss seiges is safe and more effective than just trying one. it is time for the question of the morning. >> it is 30% of people who play this game are under the age of 35. is it a, pacman, b, bingo, or

metro officially notified congress it will miss the deadline to have all of its underground stations wired for cell phone service. in a letter to several lawmakers, metro's general manager says right now all but three stations have the infrastructure. the delays after the deadly accident on the redline three years ago and missed estimations of how long the project would take are to blame. metro doesn't anticipate the project will be finished till 2015. 12 years ago the baltimore ravens brought home the super bowl title to charm city and linebacker ojbergandtz played a big role. but his life has taken a today maltically -- dramatically different path. we introduce you to life after football with the defender now dealing with a debilitating disease. >> reporter: you know the whole cheer. defense attacks the quarterback. that's what oj did during his professional and football

as a recipient of this wheelchair from the brigance brigade, a foundation that helps improve the quality of life. >> i focus on what i can do to make a difference in people's lives. >> i pretty much conceded that the disease has taken my ability to walk away. i've got young children. they're extremely active and without this wheelchair, it means go out and do the things that i otherwise would not be able to do. >> reporter: the brigance brigade also funds various research initiatives and part neared with todd general kins who will represent them at the championship next month. >> don't give up because your experience from your challenges can be a blessing to someone going through the same thing.
