the old fireplace. it might feel comfortable this morning. >> a little chilly out there. we've got the 30s and 40s in most areas but eight going to be a nice afternoon -- but it's going to be a nice afternoon. these october days, we have the colder nights. but when the leaves are starting to change, even closer to the metro, it's really a pretty time of year. pretty dark right now. sunrise still about 80 minutes away at 7:20. by lunch time a mix of clouds and sunshine. that will be the case most of the day where the high clouds are coming and going. sometimes a lot of sun, other times some filtered sunshine. 64 for lunch. high today could make a run toward 70 with enough sun and 67 at 5:00 p.m. we're looking at the high clouds this morning that have been coming in overnight. you get west of i-81, there's not much way in the way of cloudiness till you get back toward kentucky and ohio. worry about the chill this morning. it's 36 in frederick. 36 in winchester. 42 hagerstown. warm spot on the bay in annapolis at 49. even cambridge and la plata are only 40 at this hour.

6:00 a.m., good morning to monika samtani. how are the roads doing for us? >> you know, everything is good except -- look at this. all the red behind me right here. bw parkway and route 50. if you're planning to head there inside the beltway, both had accidents. inside the beltway. they're both gone but left slow traffic as you can see behind me inside the beltway on bw parkway and route 50. keep that in mind no your travel plans. the beltway is not affected. let's take a live look outside. if you're planning to head here on 270, normal slow stuff now forming as you leave frederick. another look at our maps. this time we'll head over to southbound side of 270 as i said. very slow and heavy through that area. we'll take a live look outside one more time and this time we're taking a look again at 270. route 109 is where you'll find your slow spot. more traffic coming up in a few minutes. back to you.

romney says he has a five- point plan. he doesn't have a five-point plan. he has a one-point plan. >> why am i lowering taxes? because itself last four years they've been buried. mr. president, have you looked at your pension. >> i don't look at my pension. it's not as big as yours so doesn't take as long. >> i care about a hundred percent of the american people. i want a hundred percent of the american people to have a bright and prosperous people. >> when he said behind corrode doors that -- behind closed doors that 47% of the country considered themselves victims, who refused personal responsibility, think about who he was talking about. >> some moments from last night's presidential debate. president obama and mitt romney ramped up the tension in the second debate. the. is said to have a sharper and more energetic performance than the heavily criticized one in the first debate. meanwhile romney main tabled the kind of methodical approach
6:03 am
he used in the first debate. here with me is kathi. people wanted to see if he could meet the challenge better than deor was it the cold fish you talked about before. who was there last fight? >> the president definitely showed up last night. he really corrected the problems he had in the first debate in the sense of being -- he was engaged. he was spirited. he was aggressive. there was some concern about the town hall format maybe being not the right praise for that but he did make it work. president obama really -- you know, in some ways to make -- kind of mix my metaphors a little bit, if you're going to turn your homework in two weeks late, it better be good. romney did meet him point for point for the most part. he was not worse than he was
6:04 am
two weeks ago. he definitely showed up as well. but, you know, the president definitely got the most improved trophy. you were talking about governor romney. he held on to the momentum. we have some poll numbers that seem to give the edge to president obama except on the economy. and they touched on the economy a lot. you watched the little tickers at the bottom. it was interesting that the president did make some varnses and made so good -- advances and made some good points about what he's done but then governor romney came back strong. >> yes. i think the president made some important points, the narrative about how gas prices going up were his fault. the president actually turned that around and said well, the gas prices were so low when i took office because the economy was in the tank. nobody needed gas. the demand was down. mitt romney kind of missed the point toward the end. key have said so now you think rising gas prices are good news, mr. president?
6:05 am
he didn't quite close that loop. so the president i think won that exchange in being able to say yeah, gas prices are up. that means the economy is better. >> yesterday we talked about polls and the trending towards mitt romney in the swing states. in fact, women were trending towards mitt romney in the swing states. what did you think about some of the comments both men made about equalizing women's pay in the work force and a comment take the governor made about women wanting to go home and he would let them go home early so they could fix food for their families. >> the president first of all got a big gift. that was a gift wrapped question for him about what are you going to do for women's equality because he has made obviously a very big emphasis on trying to attract women. one of the very first acts of his in office was the act for payee quality for women. so, you know, governor romney talked about the things he had done personally in office but i don't think he struck quite the right tone.
6:06 am
he talked about his cabinet and doing things to make a friendly workplace. >> we do have to go but foreign policy is the debate next monday. can the president stand up to some of the questioning that governor romney used last night talking about not knowing that it was a terror attack until 14 days later in libya? >> the president kind of walked mitt romney into a trap there because he was able to say i said it in the rose garden the day after. romney was kind of flustered by that. the question that was asked though that was not answered was why wasn't there enough security in benghazi. that was actually the voter's question. they went off on this other tangent. i think that that needs to be answered next time. >> that will be answered on monday. of course you can see that here and at wusa9. kathie obraodich, thank you for being here. last night's debate is making headlines arch the country and -- across the country and around the world. kristin fisher joins us with that part of the story.
6:07 am
>> reporter: good morning. i've been in the print room at the newseum for about an hour and a half. i've started to notice a trend in day after the second presidential debate. that trend would be this picture. it's a picture of the two candidates pointing fingers at each other. it's a moment that came about 20 minutes into the debate. a very fiery exchange the two candidates were going at each other on the issue of how they would balance the budget. it was a moment on twitter where folks were saying whoa, are these candidates going to actually have a brawl here? it was a very -- it was a big moment in the debate, i think the moment of the debate. it kind of was indicative of the flavor of the second debate which is was a very substantive debate but also very engaging and exciting to watch. this is the front page of "the washington post." the headline here with stakes high, temperatures rise. sharp exchanges in second debate. a more fiery obama hits back at
6:08 am
romney. so the post giving a slight edge to obama but still keeping it pretty even. over here on "the los angeles times," again you can see that same picture finger pointing. the headline here, a sharper tone in round two. this time the president firmly confronts romney who holds his own in a lively exchange. i think this is indicative of what we're seeing across the board. both candidates held their own, but president obama agreements the slight edge here. cnn took an instant poll right after the debate. what it showed was that obama got a seven-point lead right after the debate. same with a cbs instant poll. so again slight edge going to obama but romney most certainly holding his own. coming up, we'll be heading outside where they're going to be putting up these front pages from all newspapers across the country. they're going to be putting up right outside on that sidewalk right outside the newseum. we'll show them to you in just about half an hour.

basically leaving 495 all the way over to route 410 before that pace picks up. if you're considering taking the bw parkway, yes, that could be a good option. there was an accident there as well but i believe bw parkway looks better than this. inbound route 50 again delays beginning at the beltway at least as you head inbound inside the beltway. we'll take a look at our maps again. this time here's that delay inside the beltway. the beltway itself looks fine as you leave new carrollton heading north toward silver spring where you've got the slow traffic leaving new hampshire avenue. is will be off and on to georgia avenue. now to the south side of town. northbound 95, one long slow delay trying to get into triangle. it's agent heavy in woodbridge across the occoquan river and again in springfield. in fact, larry, can we take a look at our 50 camera first on the northbound side of i-95. here's what it looks like as you leave route 644 heading for the beltway. then a live look at 395 at seminary road. it's a long, slow lineup from duke street to this point and good across the 14th street

6:32 am
andrea and jessica. we've been inside the print room all morning long. now we're outside the newseum. this is where they put up all the front pages from newspapers all over the world. they do this every day. but on a day like today, a day after a presidential debate, i'd say almost every newspaper has some sort of headline about last night's debate. i want to start over here at "u.s.a. today," the headline here, round two, a nicier owe bam -- feistier obama. romney tangles in a lively free for all. over here, a tense rematch. obama-romney ramp up the rhetoric in a fierce fight. you see this picture here, this finger pointing, this picture is on i'd say almost 50% of the domestic newspaper front pages. the finger pointing, it was a very tense moment, very indicative of the style of the entire second debate. it was very substantive but still very entertaining and it
6:33 am
was very lively, a very good watch for all of the viewers at home. and as jessica was saying, both candidates really held their own but i do think the edge is going to have to go to president obama. it was a totally different obama than the obama that showed up in the first presidential debate. obama was very energetic, very engaged. he defended his record. he went on the attack. he went off aiz opponent and i think -- after his opponent and i think the edge does have to go to him but mitt romney, he most certainly held his own. he too, attacked the president on everything from the economy, jobs. they debated libya, gun control, immigration policies, but again the edge is going to have to go to obama. both cnn and cbs put out instant polls. both of them gave president obama a seven-point lead but again that's an instant poll. we'll have to wait and see exactly how this plays out over the next few weeks leading up to the election.
6:34 am
but again, if you're coming out here this morning walking down past the newseum, it is just fascinating going down the line and seeing how newspapers across the country are covering this. you can see mike here who has been working hard all morning long still putting them up. he's been doing a great job us for. i highly advise if you're in the area, come by, check it out. they do it every single day but this morning really the focus all on the debate. back to you. >> all right, kristin fisher live outside the newseum in northwest d.c. former senator and presidential candidate george mcgovern has been admitted to a hospice in south dakota. the democrat is best known for his unsuccessful 1972 campaign against richard nixon. his family issued a statement saying it appreciated everyone's concerns and requested privacy. george mcgovern is 90 years old. those two virginia hikers who were stranded in montana are waking up in their own beds

be just fine. the lanes are open. i'll be back in a few minutes with a look at big picture at 6:58. but first, we've been asking you all morning on facebook what you think might be the biggest distraction for teens while driving. and this is what you had to say. jamie elliot baker says friends in the car. terry says all of them actually. and corina baker fox wrote all. in our unscientific study teens said friends were the biggest distraction. a aaa study done in march, though, says the top teen driver distraction is electronics. teenage girls are twice as likely as teen boys to use text and to use cell phones or other electronic devices while be behind the wheel. not so surprising. >> girls really like to talk. that unfortunately doesn't change as we get older because it's hard to sometimes put the phone down when you're driving. >> weed is the -- we asked the kids about that. the best thing to do is to put

this will be a big issue coming up in the next presidential date. in materials of the study you conducted, what light can you shed on the questions that are going to be answered in the next debate? >> i think it's interesting to look at the poll that security is the number one issue that people think is important to them, whether it's economic, political security comes first. i think that's true for the american people. as people look at the election and the debate, they'll be calculating that question about whether this incident recently in libya is a stop of sort of a larger trend in terms of our security or is it simply the sort of last vestiges of an al qaeda that's on its heels. so they'll be looking at that question. i think americans look at foreign policy very much in a security context. >> in terms of finances, that's obviously a major issue here in the united states and certainly around the world because what we've seen going on in europe and elsewhere, but what's fascinating is you found in places where the numbers look

like they're rising. there's still a level of unhappiness with citizens in those countries. >> absolutely. it's interesting to see that not only as people in countries get more opportunity, there's also more frustration because they see that the growing middle class and emerging market country may be offering them a view of what they could have and they may see that they don't have it. but by and large we looked at gdp as a lagging indicator. what are the tools that leaders need to make better decisions. so we looked at what were people thinking about their hope for a job, their hope for economic well-being. that's really a more important indicator. in opportunity nearby came before the -- tunisia before the problems there, gdp was actually on the rise but people were unhappy. we look at these issues to help give leaders better tools to make decisions. >> what do you hope comes out of the ruts of this polling? -- results of this polling? >> what do you hope leaders do with what you're telling them?
6:49 am
>> the idea of the summit was the product of a great collaboration it my organization and general dynamics to look at these issues. the poll is really a living document so what we would like to do is for leaders through our global leadership institute and more generally to be more responsive to understand that it starts with people. and people are now increasingly driving government decisions, private sector decisions, and not the other way around. so it's really getting a handle on what people across different sectors are thinking about their aspirations. >> power to the people and for the people. thank you for coming in this morning. >> pleasure to be here. it is time now to answer our question of the morning which was 30% of the people who play this game are under the age of 35. is it a, pacman, b, bingo or c poker? here's what david wrote on our facebook pain. he says we have far more important things to talk about than games but nothing wrong with having some fun sometimes,
