the boy scouts initially opposed the release of the so- called perversion files. attorneys for the victims say that the secrecy allowed the scouts to hide a serious problem in the organization. 9news now is awaiting the release of the report. we will have a follow-up during this evening's newscast. testimony in the trial of the two prince george's county police officers accused of beating a university of maryland student could wrap up today. the most serious charges against reginald baker and james harrison, first degree assault, were dropped yesterday. jurors in upper marlboro will be allowed to consider second degree assault and misconduct charges against those officers. the beating happened after students took to the streets in college park following a victory by the maryland basketball team over duke. it happened in 2010. officer harrison took the stand this morning. we'll have the latest on that trial on our website wusa9.com.

and of course the latest information on our evening's newscast. there was a gas-related flash fire occurring at the landdown resort -- landsdown resort in leesburg, virginia. three people working in a kitchen were injured. one of them sustained burns up to 20%. the adult male was airlifted to the washington hospital center. two females were taken by ambulance to local hospitals. the cause of that fire is being investigated. fairfax county police are investigating a deadly overnight collision that occurred on route 1. police say it had happened just before 2:00 a.m. the victim, a pedestrian, was taken to a local hospital where they later died. the driver of the vehicle that hit the pedestrian remained at the scene. the northbound lanes were closed at huntington avenue,

but they reopened in time for this morning's rush hour. we're turning our attention now to campaign 2012. former virginia governors george allen and tim kaine are going to fight it out in their fifth and final debate for election day. both men are vying for the seat held by retiring senator james webb. the hour long debate will begin tonight at 7:00 p.m. it's being held at virginia tech in blacksburg, and we will be streaming is live on our website wusa9.com. in maryland, there will be a debate tonight for the sixth congressional district race. incumbent congressman ross company bartlet and his democratic challenger john delaney will go head to head. and it's occurring at the hagerstown community college in the keppler auditorium. it begins at 7:00 p.m. let's turn to the presidential campaign. president obama and mitt romney are both making a big push for

should have come to my house. he didn't need a binder. >> reporter: the republican white house hopeful will spend most of his day preparing for monday's third and final debate on foreign policy. president owe boom ma -- president obama and governor romney will also be on the same stage tonight. both candidates will speak at the memorial dinner in new york. the charity event is usually a lighthearted gathering that allows them to poke fun at themselves and each other. tomorrow both men return to the campaign trail with more stops in the battleground state that will decide this very close race. danielle nottingham, cbs news, the white house. a new report that says washington nationals fans that brought tickets to the national league championship series will not be receiving a full refund. the team's post-season dreams died when they lost to the cardinals last friday. according to wtop, nationals fans will not be refunded $6 of the price they paid for the

ticket. it is going to be held as a processing fee. fans are being refunded the ticket price as well as the convenience fee charged by tickets.com. a new report calls michael phelps the fittest man of all time. the praise comes in the latest edition of men's health magazine. the baltimore native beat out men such as charles atlas and bruce lee. arnold schwarzenegger, jack lelane and herschel walker rounded out the top five. a new report says graduating college students are being saddled with the greatest amount of debt ever. we'll have more information just ahead. new details in the foiled terror plot to blow up the term reserve bank. that story coming up.

"newsweek" magazine is going out of print. the editor says that the last printed edition of the magazine will hit the stands at the end ever the year. "newsweek" will transition to an all digital format in early 2013. "newsweek" was first published in 1933. investigators are trying to determine whether a man accused of plotting to blow up the new york federal federal reserve bank acted alone. the plans included a 1,000- pound car bomb. however, the suspect didn't know he was working with undercover f.b.i. agents. we have more now from new york. >> reporter: outside the federal reserve bank of new york, there are no signs of extra security after the building was the target of an alleged terror plot. 21-year-old quazi nafis is accused of trying to blow up the building which holds a

large reserve of gold. investigators looking to see if there were more people involved. >> what they're looking for are who did he tell, what did he tell them and when did they know it. >> reporter: he came to the united states on a student visa in january to study at southeast missouri state university. the f.b.i. says it started watching him in july after he tried setting up a terror cell online. that's when agents began a sting operation. >> he comes here with again the purpose of committing some sort of jihad here in the united states. >> reporter: on wednesday the f.b.i. says nafis tried to use his cell phone to detonate a 1,000- pound bomb in front of the bank, but the f.b.i. made sure the bomb was harmless. nafis is a imarchger's son from a -- banker's son from a middle class neighborhood in bangladesh. the fbi says he was a jihaddist who recorded a video claiming responsibility for the attack in the name of al qaeda. >> he alleged to already have

al qaeda contacts from overseas. where those -- were those contacts real, did he launch himself here a self- propelled plot or was he sent? >> reporter: wednesday night federal agents carried boxes of evidence from his apartment hoping to learn more. cbs news, new york. student loan debt among college seniors has hit a record high. last year the average college student graduated with nearly $27,000 in outstanding loans. that's up 5% from 2010. the institute for college access and success projects blames rising tuition and a tough job market for the bump in student loan debt. tuition, fees, the availability of financial aid and the cost of living also factor into the amount of debt that students pile up. coming up on 9news now, how wrpd has the forecast. -- >> howard has the forecast. >> the winds are picking up. expecting a breezy afternoon

and budget plans are working. so let's talk about the great news that you're going to share. >> well, we just received our aaa bond rating. when you think about it, all the jurisdictions throughout the entire country, they're -- there are only about 38 or so that have aaa bond ratings for all three rating agencies, from moody's, standard and poors and montgomery county is one. all the difficult challenges we've gone through the last couple of years, this is an indication of the progress we've made. it's a good house stamp of approval for us. >> what do you think specifically helped you get this rating? it's so unique in the fact that so few counties get it. what specifically did you do to get this? >> i think we reduced our cost overall. we increased our reserves significantly. and we have additional revenues, long-term revenues i think now in place. and our costs i think are in a position now that they're quite sustainable. i think it was clear to the rating agencies once they saw

that. >> that speaks to your leadership. >> thank you. >> let's talk about rockville town center. there's some new things that are going to happen there possibly. tell me about them. >> this is consistent with what i just stated about the aaa bond rating. we continue to grow and develop. here we have a completion now, a plan that would complete the town center. there's mix use development that will complete all of the town center we have now. about one-third is incomplete. this will complete the process. it's right across the street from the new choice headquarters, the world headquarters and all right close to metro. it's a wonderful addion to rockville. >> it is. that rockville town center is just absolutely incredible. i had the police chief on earlier talking about question b. >> question b. >> what is your opinion and let's discuss it very quickly? >> we should support it because it is clear that the police need to sortof management tool in order to management the

public safety of montgomery county. we have a wonderful union. they provide the services but i think we need this leadership at a level that's consistent with what you see in most of the jurisdictions. i clearly support what the chief wants and we need to back that and i urge people to vote for it. >> question seven. >> question seven is something that provides us with additional revenues for schools, roads and jobs and will stop all of the money from maryland going out of the whole state. this is the most ridiculous thing i've seen we. have gaming in the constituent of maryland but we have -- in the state of maryland but we have better gaming next door. they're trying to stop us. i think we should keep the money in marylandand ensure that we provide additional revenues for our schools, jobs and better tax base. >> we'll nd out very shortly what the voters are going to say. thank you. >> thank you. >> now let's get another look at the forecast from howard. good afternoon. we have a yellow alert for mainly tonight. we've got some showers, even a few thunderstorms we're

expecting for -- expecting. for the most part i think it holds off till dark. if you have plans tonight, it will definitely impact you. it might linger into early tomorrow morning so there could be a few showers around for the morning rush hour. clouds will increase. a mix of sun and clouds this afternoon. i think we may get to 72. breezy also with a southeast wind running 10 to 15, gusting up to 20. then this evening after 7:00, 7:00, 8:00, 9:00, 10:00 we'll start to see a few showers and storms roll across the region. that will be the case i think during the overnight as well. good news, this morning we were under a slight risk of severe weather from the storm prediction center. they downgraded that. we're not under any risk, widespread risk of severe weather though we still may get a couple of strong storms. the clear skies are giving way to some clouds now. patches of clouds. at times overcast. other times partly sunny. some showers back in ohio and kentucky. these things will be working their way east as we go throughout the afternoon. temps where it's cloudier, that's colder. still only 59 in winchester to 61 in martinsburg.

south and east of town we have 72 in cambridge and tappahannock. fredricksburg 71. here in d.c. with some clouds out there, we've got mid-60s. here's the look in tysons corner. you can see skies have become at least for the time being mostly cloudy on our michael & son weather camera with 66 degrees. winds south at 9. dew point 50. the humidity at 56%. our weather tonight being driven by this storm up across minnesota and iowa. actually a little bit of snow. you see that little pink and blue mixing? a little wintery weather mixing in with that. nothing really sticking. this will be tonight's rain maker. the winds, southerly winds, that's what's warming us up into the low 70s for an afternoon high. it's also bringing in a little low level moisture. futurecast has the clouds in and out today. maybe a shower south and west by 6:00 p.m. more likely in western maryland. then tonight see all these waves of showers are going to roll across the region? by tomorrow better chance for some early showers east of town. so the forecast calls for 72,

today i am one on one with a real star. roberta donna was named esquire's chefer of the year. he beept out -- chef of the year. he beat out chefs from all around the country. he's the executive chef of al dente which is located 3201 new mexico avenue northwest. it used to be, if you remember, sutton gourmet in that little shopping center. now it's a fak louse new tall -- fabulous new italian restaurant. they even have gelato and italian desserts and great pastas. and of course the pizzas. what are you preparing? >> these are one ever the dishes -- of the dishes we served for the "esquire"

magazine. we prepare fresh mushroom. you can use port bellow. -- portabella. almost the same. olive oil, garlic, parsley. black pepper, salt. a little bit more olive oil on the top. >> that's it? >> that's it. italian cooking is good ingredients and technique. >> that's very simple. then you wrap it up and no fancy dish? just wrap it up in aluminum foil? >> like that you put it in the oven at 400. depends on the size of the mushrooms. usually it's between 12 and 15 minutes. >> that's all? >> then you just bring it in front of your guests and you open them up. >> you have one that's already prepared. let's see what it looks like. >> the pan is hot. >> be careful, chef. >> you bring it to the customer and open it like this.
