you're looking at severe thunderstorm warnings still in effect for frederick county, maryland until 11:30. a pretty good line of thunderstorms for you, especially north and west of town from hagerstown to frederick, down to portions of loudoun county. but you will notice down to the south, still a lot of activity south and west of warrenton. that's what we are concerned about later tonight and tomorrow. a good indication of hail here for you. reported up around hagerstown. heaviest rain far and away located in the red here right uparound 240. even flash flooding is possible back to middletown and south on 15. we'll come back and talk about what these storms will do for you tomorrow morning if we're

going to clear it out and that you maybe need to allow a little extra time before you leave for work. >> all right, topper. tragedy has struck twice for the police democratic. >> for the second time in this month an officer has died. we spoke to the cops with the very latest. >> derek and anita. an unthinkable night for prince george's county police and the family of officer kevin bowden in the force for six years, a father of a 10-year-old boy and 4-year-old daughter. the closer you get the harder it is to even comprehend. it seems unfair that anyone would need this kind of end. and that you will have it here before you to advise to the death of the prince george's county police officer. >> and also kevin bowden. >> reporter: it was 3:00 this afternoon that the police officer kevin bowden was off shift driving home in his take-

home marked cruiser northbound on branch avenue headed for clinton. somehow someway bowden and the suv collided, ending with bowden's car seemingly wrapped entirely around the utility pole at the intersection of the road. bowden died. the female driver of the suv lived, taken to the hospital with what police say are non- life-threatening injuries. now the morning starts along with lots of questions. >> we have witnesses saying that the officer was cut off. but we're not at a point to say that's what caused the accident. but certainly we're looking into it. >> it is very sad. yet in the past two months we have lost another officer. >> it was august when the police officer was killed during pursuit. and that they needed to eject them. later found that he was not wearing his seat belt. tonight marks two officers taken too young and still too many questions.

questions he got off work at nine. they are not sure how fast they were going when they collided. and of course, the family and friends of officer bowden. anita? >> yes, you said it, deborah. >> panic at the mall. shoppers and employees, they were sent scrambling after they tried to fire bomb the food court with a cocktail. it happened at the ballston common mall in arlington shortly after noon today. the man was arrested hours later as we've got it on tape. we've got dramatic video you'll see only on 9 news. according to authorities, the suspect was up on the third- story ballny trying -- balcony trying to bomb people down at the food court. only on 9, you're watching the moments police with their guns drawn, suspected of

masterminding a failed attack inside the ballston common mall. >> it is really scary, i won't lie. >> reporter: 9 news was inside the mall just moments after it broke out. witnesses said that he threw the bombs from the third-floor building. >> it reeked of gasoline. >> yeah, a very strong and powerful smell. and that there is just glass everywhere. >> reporter: thankfully it is never ignited and no one hurt. police found three more similar types of explosive devices inside the mall. >> it was a rude crude device. it was nothing sophisticated about it. >> reporter: the botched attack triggered the federal authorities who locked down the mall in nearby areas. >> they just told everybody to evacuate the mall. that no one could go in there or anything like that. >> reporter: it took them three hours to find the suspect near the arlington courthouse that the whole crime was caught on their surveillance cameras and they knew how to look for it

all day long. >> that's a good thing for them to keep an eye on the malls and the places of public interest. >> reporter: meanwhile those who witnessed the terror are thankful that no one was hurt. >> it is scary. i come to this mall all the time. i come here for dinner all the time. >> reporter: police are not releasing his identify. they are continuing to ask the suspect the same questions that everyone wants answered tonight. why did he try to do this? we're in ballston, 9news. federal investigators are looking at whether or not the suspect in a plot to bomb the federal reserve in new york has ties to al qaeda. agents are pouring over evidence. and now yesterday, he tried to use the cell phone to detonate what he thought was 1,000 pound bomb in front of the federal reserve. the fbi made sure that it was harmless. if convicted, he faces life in prison. and we can expect closing arguments tomorrow in the case against two police officers in prince george's county. regional baker and james harrison charged with assault and misconduct.

the incident caught on tape back in 2010 as students at the university of maryland celebrated a basketball win over duke. and the video shows the cops using their batons to hit a young man while on the ground. today, they testified that the young man punched another officer and refused to drop an about in his hand. that object turned out to be the young man's cell phone. the boy scouts of america have released almost 15,000 pages of what has been called their perversion files. today it happened. take a look at this map put together by the l.a. times. all of these yellow dots represent the boy scout leaders and volunteers accused of sex abuse between the years 1965 and 1985. and guess what. there are about 40 of them in virginia. 37 in maryland, and 2 right here in washington, d.c. the oregon supreme court ordered the boy scouts to release those files. lawyers who fought to have the files made public accuse the boy scouts of covering up the sex abuse case. and the boy scouts say that the purpose of the file was to keep the child molesters out of the organization.

the president has apologized saying that the computer background checks are now done on all volunteers. in the meantime jerry sandusky says he is innocent of sexually abused young boys. today, he filed the paperwork hoping to get a new trial. the former penn state assistant football coach is currently serving 30 to 60 years in prison for abusing ten boys. sandusky says there wasn't enough evidence to support those convictions and that he also claims his lawyers did not have enough time to prepare for his trial. new at 11:00, 9news bruce johnson has learned that the businessman jeffrey thompson has allowed for their troubled firm to be replaced. thompson owns the charter health, which handles the medication coverage for more than 100,000 d.c. residents. he is also a part of the campaign funding violations including vincent gray's campaign for mayor back in 2010. well still ahead, inspectors find buns in the bathroom. no, no, we're talking about

committee. but cain trumpeted his time in office. >> he had a choice to make when he was governor, talking about the economic crisis in virginia. over 100,000 jobs were being lost and he chose to go around the country demonizing republicans. >> when i was governor, we were the best in the state. the best state for business all four years in forbes magazine. and my favorite education week the best state to raise a child. >> well tonight allen called for growing the economy by cutting the corporate tax levels to 20% for most businesses. cain called for letting the bush tax cuts expire for anybody making more than half a million dollars. caught on camera, it is gross and it might make you sick, and yes, inside a northwest d.c. restaurant featured in tonight's food alert. >> tonight, we're in maryland d.c. and on the 8th street corridor. if you eat there, especially for one particularly well-known name place, listen up. investigators found a food

alert for you at one address. >> reporter: it includes every restaurant inspections from the entire segment. but tonight all these violations report after report since 2011 are from one restaurant with a famous name and problem with their famous buns. inspectors say when they walked into this mcdonald's on 8th street northeast, mcdonald's was operating with a sewage back up and the chicken was not hot enough to be served. >> i'm surprised. >> reporter: this wasn't the first time. they shut down the same mcdonald's last year citing mice, uncleaned condition, and operating with no hot water. >> but i don't want that to happen. i have to go, man. >> you're not going to order? >> no, nothing from here. >> reporter: in 2011, inspectors cited the same mcdonald's for roaches, dirty soda nozzles.

wait until you hear where they stored the bread buns. this report says that mcdonald's famous buns were stored in the restroom. >> i won't come back, thanks. >> reporter: the mcdonald's manager declined an interview request. he is conducting training to include a review of food safety and health department requirements. here in landover, an unusual closure inside that warehouse. prince george's county officials came here finding fish that wasn't labeled as to what type of fish or where it came from and seizing thousands of bottles of spices, citing fda and customs regulations. inside landover's nina international warehouse, they are back in business, but not answering questions. >> we want to talk to you about the health department. about the health department inspections. >> reporter: the inspectors cited unimproved relabeling and processing. in columbia heights, inspectors

closed johnny's carryout citing gross insanitary issues including a severe roach infestation throughout. >> i'm looking for the store manager. >> reporter: they wouldn't let us see inside their kitchen, but at ez pizza and kabob. >> can we take a look at the kitchen and see if it is cleaned up? >> sure. >> reporter: and they did. >> take a look at this. >> reporter: inspectors say when they were here, two live rats jumped out of the trash. look what we found. >> do you know what that is? that's pretty big. that looks like a rat to me. >> reporter: they also cite the restaurant for uncleaned condition -- they also cited the restaurant for uncleaned conditions. >> again, no towels for the hand washing machine. >> reporter: the owner told us that he is making improvements and workers can use another sink that does have towels and that he showed us a contract with the rat exterminator that will be coming several times a week. >> we are trying to do our

[ laughter ] >> no doubt about that. good news, no severe thunderstorm warnings right now, but some heavy thunderstorms are still possible overnight and into the early morning hours. let's start with a live look outside. this is wisconsin avenue. you're looking kind of north northeast.

and the high was 72. you've got an early break on the high. still 65. almost like early september really. we have clouds, wind out of the south and they are shifting now becoming more southwesterly. they will become more southwesterly. the pressure is 29.18 inches of mercury. and it is actually falling. pretty big line of thunderstorms that went through earlier as they did produce some hail back to the west with some showers and thunderstorms back to the west here. and that is kind of what i'm concerned about overnight and early tomorrow morning. we'll be here for you at 4:25 with the latest. right now a big storm just west of frederick. back down just to the east of brunswick. and this has a lot of lightning strikes. you'll notice the reds. that's the rainfall rates of 1 to maybe one and a quarter of an inch per hour. this is what we're worried about later tonight. culpepper, warrenton, moving through parts of the metro area. i think tomorrow morning the big problems will be i-95 and eastward. all right, you see all these? reports of hail. that's why they were severe. but again right now no warnings

and there never were any watches out. okay future cast. early early in the morning, 4:45, a couple of light showers. so a lot of the commute will be wet, the roads will be damp. then we'll get into the 7:15 hour, another line tries to develop east of town. southern maryland and also the northern neck, that will roll on through for them, even by 10:00 to 11:00, it will still be wet by the way and annapolis. clears out pretty quickly after that. we'll salvage a very, very nice friday afternoon. and hit the stage for a pretty nice weekend. early showers and storms tomorrow morning. slower commute for you on i-95 and east. you might want to allow 10 extra minutes if you're coming in westbound or use i-95. you still need your shades. warmer on friday with a cooler weekend. but still a pretty nice weekend for you. temperatures are more seasonable if you will. overnight then, it looks like this. showers and thunderstorms, some heavy, breezy and mild. lows 48 to 58. winds will become southwest at 10 to 15. next three days, we're going to keep it green for you, even though we have a chance for an

early shower, 75, slight chance for an isolated shower in the afternoon. and then nice on saturday, homecoming for maryland and howard. we also have the horse race out into the plains. the gold cup, 66, also nice on sunday, 67 under partly cloudy skies. next seven days, it warms back up. we're in the mid-70s as you get into monday. don't look now, maybe a shower on tuesday, but temperatures are going to be in the mid to upper 70s on tuesday and wednesday and thursday of next week. that's a touch of september. >> no need to let that go. >> no!
