hagerstown for example down to juan quarter of a mile -- one quarter of a mile. more sunshine as we get into the afternoon. still with a threat of a shower or two this morning. high temperature 74. 5:00 p.m. temperature 71 degrees. big storm is spinning, there i went i disappeared. big storm is spinning across the great lakes, we'll try it again. in toward areas of new york state, pennsylvania, these are the storms we had last night. locally this morning it is quiet but the stuff down in raleigh, that's moving to the north northeast and that's what i think could be getting here in few hours. as you look at the doppler radar this morning just an isolated shower or two. heaviest stuff near annapolis. now with monika samtani on this friday morning, timesaver traffic. i saw a camera back there the beltway ugly. yeah so ugly and i can't believe it's only 5:00 in the morning. but, hence it's washington. and u know, but normally on friday mornings we don't deal with this. today is a different story. let's take a look live on the inner loop of the beltway before route 355. take a look at this. this delay now begins right

through bethesda heading eastbound toward route 355. and it doesn't even look like anything is moving right now. and that's because there are two tractor-trailers, two separate accidents got involved there before route 355. wreckers on the scene, t it's going to take a little while to clean this up. i believe one of the accidents involves a fuel spill now as well. so keep that in mind for your travel plans and know that it's going to take you much longer than normal to get through the area. and i'll be back with more details on this accident at 5:10. back to you guys. thank you monika. president obama and mitt romney will both campaign in virginia today. the president will be at george mason university this morning, and governor romney will make a stop in abingdon. >> yesterday, both men took time off from campaigning for some comical moments at the al smith dinner. a fundraiser for catholic charities. kristin fisher is live in the satellite center with more. good morning kristin. >> reporter: good morning. well you know two nights ago, we watched these two men go at it in one of the most heated

mistakenly released to the public hours ahead of schedule. a 20% drop in profits and revenue sent shares of google tumbling 8% at the end of day. after the closing bell, microsoft also reported lower profits and revenue ahead of the windows 8 launch. the fast food chain chipotle also sa profits missed the mark because of a slowdown in growth and it keeps coming. advanced micro devices will cut nearly 15% of the work force after the pc chip maker reported a steep quarterly loss. now to make matters even more -- potentially challenging, today marks the 25th anniversary of the stock market crash of 1987. that was the day when the dow fell 508 points or 22%. but since then, the dow has gained nearly 12,000 points. since last session the dow slipped about eight points --

gas prices have started their seasonal slide. thank goodness. it's finally happening. the national arch for a gallon -- average for a gallon of regular is $3.74. that's down 13 cents from the peak a month ago. at least one analyst expects gas prices to drop as much as 45-cents a gallon by the middle of november. and it's cheaper to refinance a home this week. the average rate on a 30 year loan dipped to a near record 3.37%. while the rate on a 15 year mortgage fell to an all-time low of 2.66%. >> my goodness. that's incredible. >> i remember when i got my first mortgage in 2001. i got something over 8%. and i was excited about it. >> exactly. exactly. can you refinance if you just did it. maybe a year ago? >> you can, i mean -- you generally as a roll of thumb look for a -- rule of thumb look for a point spread. after a year you probably won't find that but do the math. sometimes it makes sense. >> all right, very good. the boy scouts of america are ordered to release secret sex

back to you guys. here's a look at some other things making news now. the boy scouts of america has released a file of papers which shows the organization shielded scout masters and others accused of molesting children. there are more than 14,000 pages of memos and letters from victims and their parent as well as newspaper clippings in the quote perversion files. the oregon supreme court ordered the scoutsto release the files thursday. jerry sandusky has file paper work in hopes of getting a new trial. the former football coach is currently serving 30 to 60 years in prison for abusing ten boys. sandusky says there wasn't evidence to support the convictions. he also claims his lawyers didn't have enough time to prefair for his trial -- prepare for his tile. after 80 years of the newsstand "newsweek" will go all digital tail early next year. job cuts are expected but the company didn't give a specific figure. the online publication will be called news week global and

suspect in a plot to bomb the federal reserve in new york has ties to al-qaeda. agents are poring over evidence confiscated from the apartment. on wednesday he tried to use a cell phone to detonate 1,000- pound bomb in front of the federal reserve. if convicted he faces life in prison. a number of the soldiers wounded in the fort hood shooting rampage want the event to be classified as a terror attack. a group of about 160 people affected by the shooting expressed frustration thursday. they say shoaler ands injured or killed deserve fair benefits and purple heart eligibility. however those benefits will not be awarded until -- unless rather the shooting is declared a terrorist attack. the defense department considers the shooting to be a workplace violence incident. 13 people were killed during the shooting and army mayor hasan is accused in the incident. the identity of the man accused of throwing some kind of flammable substance into the ballston common mall is still

unknown. it was shut down after receiving a report of someone throwing is molotov cocktail into the building. after three hours of searching the nearby area police made an arrest. the system was questioned by the -- suspect was questioned by the police and atf and fbi. it was a bomb scare and it was captured on mall security. closing arguments are expected today in the case against two police officers in prince george's county accused of beating a university of maryland student. reginald baker and james harrison are charged with second degree assault and misconduct. the 2010 incident was captured on video and happened as students celebrated a basketball win over duke. the video shows the cops using their batons to hit a young man while he was on the ground. yesterday, officer harrison testified that man punched another officer and refused to drop an only in his hand. it turn -- object in his hand. it turned out to be the guy's cell phone. on 5:15, look what i guilty fred. a lovely -- got yesterday.

the sun later this morning into the afternoon hours with upper 60s in not 70 by moon -- if not 70 by noon. then the afternoon 74 for the high with a 71-degree reading at 5:00 p.m. winds southerly south-southwest at about 10 miles an hour. even though we've seen the big storms move east, you know i got a backup and show you this again. i'm sorry i jumped the gun here. watch -- well, anyway there's stuff coming out of the raleigh area through south central virginia that could be headed to fredericksburg or even southern maryland here in a few hours. we have some showers isolated scattered ones here along 522 along the state line here in frederick county, virginia and west virginia back there near fort ash by. east of cumberland. this is moving north northeast and off to our east, we've been watching some other showers that have been falling through annapolis now. this is lifted off to the north and coastal anne arundel and this is pulling away. other than that, a quiet morning. touch of fog. cumberland by the way, one quarter mile visibility. we've seen the fog in tysons in

a moment. 60 in reston and rockville. 59 leesburg and big rummage sale going on for the hospital out there. go check them out. 63 this weekend today and tomorrow. college park 63. upper marlboro 62 so a mild morning. it's damp outside and you can see the fog in the air. not too dense here at tysons corner on our michael & son weather camera. but we've got 64 degrees under mostly cloudy skies at reagan national. and the humidity it is up. as you would expect 87%. cold stuff that's out in the rockies, 20s and 30s here, it's cool in chicago at 45 while we're 64. this a big -- i mean a big storm spinning in the middle of the country. look at this thing, this is a big classic comma shape and covers a lot of real estate. drawing up the moisture from the gulf of mexico. we had the heavy downpours overnight and going to continue to watch. this stuff sweep through us. here's the stuff i'm concerned that could get into southern maryland here in a few hours. headed in our direction. not out of the woods just yet but a nice lull for the moment.

74 and some showers on and off through mid-morning, better afternoon. tonight we're falling into the 50s and 40s in the suburbs. pleasant this weekend with highs in the mid 60s saturday and sunday and then monday back in the 70s at least for the first half of next week. you know, it has not been much fun on the inner loop of the beltway this morning. at about 1:00 this morning, a tractor-trailer hit a guardrail before route 355 and got stuck there. then a little later, another tractor-trailer came by and didn't realize that there was an accident there. jackknifed and also had a fuel spill. to that's why you're dealing with all of the slow traffic on the inner loop that's eastbound 495 trying to get toward route 355 here. in fact let's just go to the live picture on the inner loop of the beltway and this is what you have to deal with. not moving. authorities crews are on the scene doing their clean-up and trying to get everything out of the way with two tractor- trailers involved you know that's a big deal. so this is what you have to deal with in bethesda if you

can avid the beltway through that stretch please do it. maybe get on at connecticut avenue past the traffic scene. east of the accident and you can see the traffic is not affected here. you're okay at georgia avenue and even on the outer loop heading to connecticut and route 355. you may hit the brakes because of people looking over at the accident scene but otherwise the lanes are open on the outer loop of the beltway heading west to bethese null remember that for your travel plans. let's take a look into virginia on the northbound side of 395. 14th street bridge looks great. by the way, outbound 11th street bridge to get on to southbound 295 that new ramp is now open. that should be great for commuters. back with more traffic at 5:29. back to you jess. thank monika. the time right now is 5:19 and another look at the question of the day --

had i would say -- other happened i would say a quarter to 5:00 this morning on the inner loop of the beltway right before route 355. that beltway delay on the inner loop heading eastbound to route 355. crews are on the scene there. they were not letting traffic through for quite some time and you can see that it doesn't look like they are right now either. no traffic moving on the inner loop through bethesda. let's take a look at the maps so i can show you and give you some perspective of what we're talking about. right here it's two tractor- trailers as i said as you head eastbound on the beltway through bethesda towards silver spring. take another live look at the beltway delay and here at bradley boulevard you can just about see a little further up here, where the delay begins trying to head eastbound, now luckily if anything it's against the rush hour flow and plenty of people do use the eastbound side of 495 early in the morning. souples remember that for your travel plans, we're on it and sending a crew there as well and trying to get as much information as we can for you. let's go over to another live picture, this time, on the

virginia side of things. northbound 95 in springfield looks great. it's incident-free. friday morning light thankfully through springfield and on to 395. more traffic in a few minutes coming up. back to you guys. thanks monika. tragedy has now struck twice for the prince george's county police department. for the second time in as many months, an officer has died in a car crash. >> officer kevin bowden was just 28 years old. the veteran was off-duty when he crashed the cruiser into an suv. debra alfarone has the story. >> reporter: the closer you get, the harder it is to even comprehend. it seems unfair anyone would meet this kind of end. >> with a very heavy heart that i come before you tonight to advise you of the death of a prince george's county police officer, officer kevin bowden. >> reporter: it was 3:00 this afternoon 28-year-old prince george's county police officer kevin bowden was off shift driving home in his take home marked cruiser northbound on

branch avenue through clinton. somehow, some way, bowden and a white suv seen here on the right collided ending with bowden's car seemingly wrapped entirely around a utility pole at the intersection at surratts road. bowden died. the female driver of the suv lived. taken to the hospital with what police say are nonlife- threatening injuries. now the morning starts along with lots of questions. >> we have witnesses saying that the officer was cut off. and we're not at a point yet to say that's what caused the accident. but certainly we're looking into that. >> it's very sad, yet again in the past two months we've lost another officer. >> reporter: august when prince george's county police officer adrian morris was killed during a purr site when his car hit a guardrail on i-895 eject -- i- 95 ejecting him, it was later found he wasn't wearing his seat belt. still too many questions. >> that was debra alfarone

reporting. chief ma gaw says bowden got off work at 1:00 p.m. it's not known where he was headed or how fast they were going when they collided. the fungus has been found in unopened vials of steroid medication. the food and drug administration says the fun buzz was in vials made in august by the new england compounding center. yes the massachusetts pharmacy at the center of the national investigation into more than 250 meningitis cases. there have been at least 20 deaths including some in maryland and virginia. they called it a rumble at hofstra but last night president obama and mitt romney took some time off from campaigning for some light hearted moments ad the al smith dinner last night in new york city. the candidates joked about themselves and each other. >> now the good times are going to end today when they head back out on the campaign trail. both men will make stops in virginia. kristin fisher is live in the 9news now satellite center and she promised us some of the best moments.

pills with concentrated cranberries may be slightly more effective and the research should continue. a blood test may be able to identify women at high risk of breast cancer up to 20 years before symptoms surface. boston researchest found women with a certain combination of hormone levels in their blood were two times more likely to eventually develop breast cancer. scientists say the finding could one day lead to a common test letting doctors know which women need to be watched closely. a compound in green tea may help some of the women. a small study found a green tea extract appears to suppress proteins which fuels cancer cells. it was to small to determine if it can prevent breast cancer but larger studies are now being done to find out. come walk with me. please. join jessica, monika and me tomorrow morning at national harbor for the step out walk to stop diabetes. walking is one of the easiest

most relaxing form of exercise for many people. but especially those living with diabetes. >> my name is joyce cartwright. i've been a runner since elementary school. high school and in college. and this is me -- i had to circle me so i know me later. >> after graduating howard university, chris thought she'd never run again even for the bus. instead she focused energies on her family and her job as executive director of strive d.c.. it helps the unemployed get and keep a job and live a fuller life. but in 2007, her life turned upside down. she felt a lump under her arm and on the day before her 46th birthday a biopsy confirmed breast cancer. >> i had a lumpectomy and they tell you, oh, you can go back to everything that you've done before. and i said, it's obvious they didn't know what i did before

because i couldn't do anything that i did before. i was in pain and hurt. >> a year later after chemo and radiation, tests showed a sharp rise in her blood sugar levels. doctors suspected diabetes. but chris missed the symptoms. >> i didn't realize you know that that thirst is one and the vision issue is another and losing weight is still another. >> but put all together chris was now a breast cancer survivor trying to survive type 2 diabetes. she admits it's even harder than fighting cancer. >> they determined the medication. they determine this and that. i had to go with it and i had to have faith they were going to do the right thing. and go with it. it's diabetes -- it's on me. >> chris has to watch what she eats, her weight and she has to measure her sugar levels every day and now that she's back on her feet as a distance runner, chris has to monitor her sugar levels twice while she's running. she just finished is san francisco marathon for women's cancers and an ambitious 198-
