>> heard from a viewer in herndon. he's having breakfast on his porch. we have late summer, early spring temperatures we'll be dealing with for the next few days. our day planner calling for a decent day. not as blue as yesterday. we'll have a mix of high clouds and sunshine but 70 by noon. we'll take that. average high 66. we'll get to 78 at about 3:30 before falling back to 76 at 5:00 p.m. so if you've got some evening plans, you're in for a treat today. we are watching some showers north of the maryland- pennsylvania border. also in ohio andeanian and new york state -- and indiana and new york state but they're moving east. other than straddling the mason- dixon line, i think the rest of us will see passing high clouds. temperatures in the mid-40s in the cool spots to the mid-50s in town. annapolis, southern maryland at the patuxent river naval air station. we're off to a good start in the 40s and 50s. maybe a light jacket or sweat shirt. 79 leesburg this afternoon.

actually at 6:11. back to you. >> thank you. president barack obama and governor mitt romney wrapped up the last of a series of campaign debates last night at lynn university in boca raton, florida. >> this time the focus foreign policy. mitt romney tried to convince americans the president has been strong -- hasn't been a strong enough leader on the world stage. the president used his time to tick off his accomplishments one by one. >> kristin fisher is live from our satellite center with a look at how the night went for each candidate. good morning, kristin. >> reporter: good morning. no clear winner out of this third and final debate. instant polls from both cbs and cnn did give president obama a slight edge but mitt romney held his own. no major gaffes even though foreign policy the subject matter of this third and final debate is not his strong suit. that's widely regarded as his big weak spot. i want you to take a look at the video as the two campaign dates walked out. -- candidates walked out. they are all smiles but this was another very heated debate. the most memorable line, the

most tweeted line of the night came from the president as he attacked his opponent's comments about cuts to the defense budget. >> i think governor romney maybe hasn't spent enough time looking at how our military works. you mentioned the navy for example. we have fewer ships than we did in 1916. governor, we also have fewer horses and bayonets because the nature of our military has changed. we have these things called aircraft carriers where planes land on them. we have these ships that go under water, nuclear submarines and so the question is not a game of battleship where we're counting ships. it's what our capabilities. >> of course i don't concur with what the. said about my own record and the things i've said. they don't happen to be accurate but i can say this. we're talking about the middle east and how to help the middle east reject the kind of terrorism we're seeing and the rising tide of confusion. attacking me is not annual

agenda. attacking me is not talking about how we're going to deal with the challenges in the middle east and taking the opportunity there and stem the tide of this violence. >> reporter: the middle east dominated the first full hour of this 90-minute debate. a lot of talk about iraq and israel and i'll have excerpts from what the two candidates had to say about both of those countries coming up in half an hour at 6:30. i think a lot of folks are going to need it this morning because viewership definitely down in the third and final debate. it was competing with two pretty big sporting events. >> exactly. a lot of the information was the same, just phrased a little differently from the past two debates. >> kristin fisher live in our satellite center this morning. she'll find more to tell us about, though, coming up in our newscast. same-sex marriage may be one of the most controversial questions on the maryland ballot, and this morning maryland elections officials are apologizing for a bad translation of the spanish language explanation of question six. the wording could have some

spanish speakers voting the opposite way they intend. officials say the wording on the ballot, though, is correctly translated. this morning we have an update on the manual accused of -- man accused of trying to firebomb an arlington shopping mall. leon trail, jr. is going to be in court again this morning. his lowers are sterned about his american tall state. they asked a judge to order an evaluation. he toss add molotov cocktail into the food court of the ballston common mall last thursday. the device did not explode and no one was hurt. the 12 yearldz maryland boy charged in the july beating death of a 2-year-old foster child living with his family will be in court later this morning. last month the child entered an alfred plea in the case. it does not admit guilty but acknowledges enough evidence exists for a jury or judge to reach a guilty verdict. the boy's attorney says his client denies hitting the child but the boy and his family felt the risk of going to trial on a second-degree murder charge was

such inflap -- with such inflammatory evidence was just too great. an update this morning about the massachusetts pharmacy linked to that meningitis outbreak across the nation. the massachusetts department of health released hundreds of pages of documents on monday detailing a history of violations at the new england compounding center. the documents include dozens of complaints from as early as april 1999. the company was repeatedly cited for not providing the appropriate data to support its medicines' exper ration date. in the -- expiration date. the national cathedral is now hosting a public forum on the muslim experience in america. the panel discussion co-hosted by the center for study of presidency in congress will look at the challenges muslims face in the united states. the forum is set to begin at 7:30 in the cathedral's nave. it's 6:06. jessica doyle is watching your money. >> she's also watching the phones and the time you will be getting to work soon.

>> it used to be d.c. was a blackberry town like a lot of the united states and others started moving to iphones and droids but federal employers stuck by the encrypting technology offered by blackberry until now. u.s. immigration and customs enforcement is the latest federal agency to drop blackberry smartphones for the iphone. blackberry is still the smartphone of choice for capitol hill. earlier this year the bureau of alcohol, tobacco, firearms and explosives and national oceanic and atmospheric administration also dumped blackberry for the iphone. wal-mart is facing some tough allegations. according to a federal lawsuit, wal-mart broke labor laws by requiring temporary employees to work overtime without getting paid for it. the suit claims wal-mart made the workers arrive early for their shifts, stay late and work through breaks and lunches. it seeks unpaid wages for the employees. wal-mart says it's committed to ensuring all workers are fairly compensated. fed ex is predicting you're

advisor described moving from the primaries to the general elections. >> it's almost like an etch sketch. >> reporter: that had stephen colbert reaching for the closest etch sketch shaking it up in an empty paint can and pulling a rabbit out of it. but you know who the etch sketch comment was really good for? the makers of etcha sketch. sales of these things spiked about a thousand percent. catch phrases get etched on t- shirts. they get turned into viral videos. >> you didn't build that. >> reporter: even an empty chair. >> what do you mean shut up? >> reporter: can become a catch phrase n. this case aimed at president obama when he blew the first debate. the good news is that a year or so after the election. >> you might have a case of romnesia. >> reporter: we're all going to have obama amnesia, a case that erases all 2012 phrases.

>> that was great. howard, you're back. what are you going to tell us? >> we have great weather the next few days. here's your bus stop forecast on this tuesday morning. temperatures much more palatable than yesterday when it was chilly. it was cold. mid-30s. we had frost in the shenandoah valley. this morning the cool spots are in the mid-40s and mid-50s in town and by the bay. some high clouds out there. that will be the case mixing with the sunshine. no, sir as blue yesterday but warmer, 7 -- not as blue as yesterday but warmer, in the 70s. winds out of the south, 8, 10 miles an hour. so very comfortable considering the average highs are about 66. look at this. showers this morning up in pennsylvania, back toward ohio. generally along and north of i- 70 but in western maryland, a couple of showers here on 68 are about to come in in the

northern part of garrett county. somerset toward altoona seeing a mott lorraine, even -- lot more rain, even thunder. it's 53 in fredricksburg. easton 49 degrees. outside on our michael & son weather camera, good visibility. in spite of the fact we've got some clouds around, these are real high thin clouds. no issues with that. light winds out of the southwest only 3 miles an hour. our barometer 30.11. it is falling at the moment. does appear most of these showers, not all of these showers will stay north of the mason-dixon line. this stuff goes back to indianapolis, goes into missouri but the flow is taking it just to our north. we'll have some fine weather here. you're traveling up toward pennsylvania, then air going to run into some of those showers. here's sandy in the western caribbean. this will be moving up toward the north. sandy is strengthening right now. slowly drifting to the north. winds at 45. forecast to strengthen into a hurricane by tomorrow when it hits jamaica and still be a

hurricane over eastern cuba on thursday. after that through the bahamas and hopefully follows this forecast by the hurricane center northeast away from the u.s. mainland. if not, i've seen models try to take it up the coast. 78 today. tonight 60 in town with 50s in the suburbs. thursday a few more clouds, northeast winds so 70 to 75. still nice friday and saturday and then not quite sure on sunday and monday only because it depends on what sandy does but i'm pretty positive it's going to turn colder. here's monika at 6:17 timesaver traffic. our sky 9 is heading to an accident right now westbound route 32 near route 175 in odenton. in the meantime that truck, that disabled truck on the northbound side of route 301 at central avenue now in its clearing stages. a frito lay truck. dy not get my doritos this morning. let's take a look live at the beltway on the west side of town. here's what it looks like at the american legion bridge. beginning to get a bit slow

our south and west. andrea and mike? >> thanks, howard. in sports giants advance to the world series. >> the giants won the pennant. that's an old radio call. plus, chris cooley talks about his return. some oldsters will know whaim' talking about. attaching -- what i'm talking about. thank you, howard. good morning, everybody. captain chaos has returned to the dmv. the redskins brought back fan favorite chris cooley after losing tight end fred davis for the season. just eight weeks ago the redskins sent cooley packing cut cutting him just before the start of the season. but cooley said today he knew the extent of davis' injury within an hour after it happened on sunday and figured he would get a call. apparently the two sides had previously discussed such a possibility. cooley says he doesn't know how soon he'll see playing time but he's just excited to come home. >> i'm just excited to be back and be part of the locker room and be a part of the group of

good morning. welcome back to 9news now. 6:29. traffic moving along on the 14th street bridge. they probably don't have heaters on in their car. it's 56 degrees but they'll need the air conditioner later today. thank you for starting your tuesday with us. i'm andrea roane. i'm mike hydeck. meteorologist howard bernstein live on the weather terrace sampling the envie rones outside. >> very comfortable out here. it's a little cool without a jacket. temperatures running above 50. some of the suburbs down to the mid-40s. i think a light jacket is all you need this morning. you certainly will not need anything this afternoon. it will be fantastic. here's a look at our day planner. we start 40s and 50s. great visibility out here on our michael & son weather

camera in northwest d.c. by noon 0 -- noon 70 with a mix of clouds and sun. our highs today between 75 and 80. about 78 for washington. maybe even 80 out toward culpeper. looking at the satellite and radar, we started clear but high clouds have been spilling over the region especially north of us. in pennsylvania we have showers, even a rumble of thunder. a few of those showers have snuck in toward garrett county. we may see something right along the mason-dixon line in far northern maryland as we go throughout the morning hours. otherwise enjoy the weather for the next few days. we'll have temperatures starting out in the mid-40s like manassas and culpeper. leesburg 53. 46 la plata but 54 on the bay in annapolis and even cumberland in western maryland enjoying a mild start at 50. this afternoon sunshine, some high clouds, upper 70s to about 80. looks like we'll be back toward the 80-degree mark again tomorrow. i'll be back in a few minutes giving you your seven-day forecast. things are going to change. i'm talking about sandy and the

tropics. right now we go inside to monika with timesaver traffic. we had a stuck truck on the northbound side of 301 at central avenue and that was blocking a lane early this morning that should be in its clearing stages now. now there's an accident in odenton up here on the westbound side of route 32 at route 175. i'm going to show what you it looks like live from our sky 9 and what's going on here is westbound route 32 is blocked and those people are sharing that merge lane at route 175. i would say it's backed up for about a mile now westbound route 32 leaving game bells -- gambrells. keep that in mierchedz about a -- mind, about a mile backup you're not used to this early in the morning. this time on the beltway at new hampshire avenue, normal slow stuff outer loop as you leave new hampshire headed toward silver spring. all lanes are open on the north side of town. back over to the maps this time to 270. look at the long slow lineup 16 miles an hour as you leave

see you at 7:00. >> we'll be watching. we especially want to larry what bob has -- hear what bob has to say. the president and mitt romney went head to head over foreign policy, each trying to paint the other as less qualified to be commander in chief in a time of crisis. >> kristin fisher joins us live from the satellite center with a look at the final showdown. good morning, kristin. >> reporter: good morning. both campaigns are claiming victory this morning. no surprise there. but what was surprising at least for average americans was the complete role reversal between the first and final debate. the president went from being sleepy to super aggressive while mitt romney went from attacking to at times agreeing with his opponent. now, don't worry, there were still plenty of fireworks, especially when mitt romney went after the president for going on what he calls an

apology tour across the middle east. listen. >> mr. president, the reason i call it an apology tour is because you went to the middle east and you flew to egypt and to saudi arabia and to turkey and iraq and -- by the way, you skipped israel, our closest friend in the region, but you went to the other nations. and by the way, they noticed that you skipped israel. >> if we're going to talk about trips that we've taken, when i was a candidate for office, first trip i took was to visit our troops. when i went to israel as a candidate, i didn't take donors. i didn't attend fund-raisers. i went to the holocaust museum there to remind myself the nature of evil. >> reporter: another key disagreement during the debate, u.s. troop levels in iraq. >> this is just a few weeks ago you indicated we should still

have troops in iraq. >> i'm sorry, that's -- i indicated that you failed to put in place a status of forces agreement at the end ever the conflict that existed. >> governor, here's one thing -- here's one thing i've learned as commander in chief. you've got to be clear both to our allies and our enemies about where you stand. >> reporter: another heated debate with no clear winner although a slight edge goes to president obama. now we're exactly two weeks away from election day. you can believe it. today both the candidates are going to be back on the campaign trail. mitt romney is going to be campaigning in nevada and colorado. president owe boom ma has -- president obama has events in florida and ohio. with two weeks to go, you know it's all about these battleground states. >> kristin fisher approves this message. >> reporter: i'm tired of hearing it. >> we're two weeks away from the end of that, too. thank you, kristin. one of the hottest congressional races in our area

is for maryland's sixth district because of redistricting. ten-term republican rosco bartlet finds himself in a real battle this time around. 9 news now at 7:00 p.m., both mr. bartlet and his democratic challenger john delaney will be in studio for our entire newscast. they are going to discuss the issues important to district 6 marylanders. that's tonight right here on 9news now at 7:00 p.m. tonight candidates for maryland's third and fourth congressional districts will discuss their views in a forum. it begins at 7:00 at anne arundel community college. libertarian paul drogus, republican eric knowles and john sarbanes will discuss district 3 and then at 8:15. unfortunately he's still out there somewhere. the man who sexually assaulted

a woman on the popular jogging trail the capital crescent. the latest attack took place last night on the stretch of the trail near massachusetts avenue in bethesda. a man came up from behind a woman, knocked her on the back of the head and assaulted her. says' receiving treatment in the hospital while police search for her attacker. they're also telling joggers to be extra careful. two very different versions of the same story are emerging in the harassment trial of douglas kennedy. he's the youngest son of the late robert f. kennedy, and he's accused of assaulting two nurses in the maternity ward of a suburban new york hospital last january. everyone agrees that kennedy was trying to take his newborn son outside when nurses stepped in to stop him. however, prosecutors say kennedy fought back as the nurses tried to follow hospital protocol by stopping him from leaving with the baby. one of the nurses testified monday that kennedy twisted her arm and kicked another nurse who came to her aide.

kennedy's defense team says one of the nurses was abrasive and confrontational. the makers of monster energy drinks are now facing a lawsuit following the death of a 14-year-old maryland girl. the lawsuit filed in california claims the teenager died of heart problems after drinking two monster drinks in two days. according to the lawsuit, that amounts to 14 12 ounce cans of coke cool la. the family is suing monster about failing to warn about the dangers. monster says it's saddened by the death but does not believe its beverages are responsible for the girl's death. the food and drug administration has received reports of five deaths that involve monster energy drinks. 6:37. jessica is here with another your money report. >> time to check out the pumps. how much have you paid to fill up lately? >> that's right. if you haven't looked recently, i bring you a big gift. gas prices are down 8 cents a gallon in the past week. that's right. aaa mid-atlantic says gas

prices are currently averaging $3.64 a gallon. that's down from $3.72 a week ago. this time last year, though, we were still paying 20 cents less. don't be upset. some analysts are pre- deducting gas prices will fall by another 30 cents by thanksgiving. it's right around the corner. speaking of energy, a big announcement from ikea today. the home goods chain is expected to announce it will only rely on the sun and the wind to produce all of its power that it uses at its stores and buildings in eight years. the plans include more rooftop solar panels and building wind farms. it already has solar panels on top of 38 of -- or rather 34 of its 38 u.s. stores and distribution centers. good news if you want a new car. some automakers are letting drivers out of existing leases a few months early if they lease or buy a new one. some examples on for you. from lincoln mkz drivers can

return their cars up to six months early if they take a new 2012 model. bmw is letting drivers out of leases three months early if they lease or buy a new model before october 31. and lexus financial services offers early return leases on a case-by-case basis. >> interesting. the financials have changed a little bit. in some cases leases can make as much sense as buying. make sure for run the -- to run the numbers. >> do they do zero percent and zero cost? >> if only. zero percent financing is everywhere. you really should look. if this is the time for you to maybe buy a new car, this is a good time to look. >> i want one but it's not the time. >> not even to lease. thank you, jess. guess what? are you worried about it turning cold? you don't have to be, not today. it's going to be a sunny day out and a little cloudy. >> a warm day, too. you'll want to stay with howard to get his forecast that takes

at 6:44 and 56 degrees. monika with timesaver traffic. accident cleanup continues in odenton on the westbound side of route 32 at 175, about a mile backup there. look at this backup, southbound 270 after frederick. most of the way in toward germantown and gaithersburg, going about 16 miles an hour off and on there. there was a deer struck early this morning at route 124. that was cleared a while ago but set the tone for a tough one on 270. let's take a live look outside and show you what it looks like here if you're planning to head to father hurley boulevard and off and on delays right on down the line here. let's go back over to the maps this time to the west side of town if you're planning to head inbound on i-66. not too bad. the slowest part is going to be here near route 50.
