>> governments, emergency responders, and utility companies are among those gearing up. 9news now reporter kristin fisher is live at pepco headquarters with details. good morning, kristin. >> reporter: good morning. this morning power companies from north carolina all the way up to new york city are closely following hurricane sandy's track. here at pepco in our region, they have already started to activate your emergency plans. yesterday they put 400 contractors on stand "best" by throughout the weekend. they've also called out to other states to have reinforcements ready in case this thing does hit us. a lot of people in the d.c. area as you might guess, they don't put a ton of faith in the power companies. they'll be able to keep the lights on so they went ahead and took matters into their own hands. check out what it was like yesterday at the lowe's in laurel. people were lined up to put down anywhere from $800 to $1200 bucks for generators, a clear sign of concern that folks are growing increasingly

nervous about hurricane sandy. >> this impending storm has got me pretty nervous. you know, i decided to invest in a generator. been out of power a few different times. i've lost food, had to empty out my refrigerator. just not going to do that this time around. >> reporter: the other big seller is flashlights, batteries n. is a big one, guys. supplies to keep -- excuse me, supplies to clean the leaves out of gutters and drains. it's always something that you should do but this is so important to do, especially this late in the hurricane season because if big rains and winds come, there will be nowhere for all that water to go if your gutters or drains are clogged. this time of year we all know leaves are everywhere. if you have a chance clean them out this weekend before this could potentially hit us late monday. later today, pepco is going to be holding a news conference about what their storm preparedness is going to be over the weekend. they'rele going to be providing

some tips to folks about what you all can do if the power does indeed go out. we'll let you hear what they had to say yesterday. our 9news now crew caught up with them yesterday. i'll give you a preview coming up in half an hour at 5:30. back to you. >> thk you. kristin fisher outside pepco headquarters in northwest. you know they're under the gun for this storm. a former f.b.i. agent was convicted on all accounts against him in a deadly dui crash. last year's crash in brandywine, maryland killed 18- year-old lawrence gardner, jr. and seriously injured his best friend. agent adrian johnson was off duty at the time of the crash. prosecutors say he had a blood alcohol content of more than three times the legal limit. johnson faces a maximum of 13 years in prison when he's sentenced in december. arlington police say they've launched a criminal investigation into the conduct of patrick moran, the son of virginia congressman jim moran. the move follows the release of an undercover video showing the younger moran discussing a plan with an alleged volunteer to

cast fraudulent ballots. a conservative activist made the tape. moran first expresses doubt about the plan but eventually says he'll look into it. pat moran resigned from his father's campaign after the video came out. it is 5:05. i'm watching your money on wall street. let's hope this rally has some legs. they were able to put some points on the big board yesterday but not enough to undo the trouble from the last few trading sessions. coming into today, the key averages are down between 0.7 to 1.8% for the week. later today investors will be looking over the latest reading on the gdp which is a broad look at the hillment of the overall economy. checking the numbers the dow stands this morning at 13,104 after adding 25 points in trading yesterday. making that 26. the nasdaq was up by 4 and the s&p 500 was up by 4 as well. investors will watch shares of apple today. apple has a new iphone, two new ipads and three new pcs as it

heads into the holiday quarter but the company expects these new gadgets to actually bring down its profits compared to last year. that's because they're so expensive to make. the company says it isn't interested if cutting corners for the sake of short-term returns. on top of the holiday quarter warning, the company has reported earnings for its just ended quarter that missed wall street expectations for the second quarter in a row, and that's something that hasn't happened for that company in more than a decade. amazon stock also one to watch today. after the bell the world's largest online retailer reported third quarter results below wall street expectations. these results included a large loss that was weighed down by its stake in d.c.-based daily deals company living social. even with that factor, amazon still would have lost a lot of money and even more than analysts were expecting. amazon said it's $199 kindle fire tablet is the best selling product worldwide but did not give specific sales figures. larger version of the fire is due out next month. here are two big companies

5:09. i'm have the latest sandy but right now i want to tell but today's weather. we still have some fog and drizzle we'll be dealing this morning. i think the clouds will eventually be burning off this afternoon so a slow climb to the mid-60s by lunch time. we'll get to the upper 60s to low 70s with the day finishing off partly sunny. the newest information on sandy in about five. accident clean upjust out of this camera shot on the southbound side of i-95 after the fairfax county parkway

approaching lorton. two right lanes have been blocked without much delay. i'll be back with more traffic coming up in a few minutes at 5:18. jess? >> thank you, monika. making news at 5:10, police in new york city are investigating a horrific crime. a nanny is accused of stabbing two young children in her care killing them both before turning the knife on herself. the nanny is hospitalized in critical condition. repairs are under way in jamaica where hurricane sandy hit earlier this week. traffic moved slowly around the capital city as police directed drivers around blocked roadways. the island's power companies says at one point 70% of residents lost power. some wounded warriors are the first to see the newly renovated statue of liberty. they were treated thursday to a tour of the $30 million renovations, including a new elevator to the observation deck. lady liberty will reopen to the public on sunday which is also its 126th annual versery. hopefully -- anniversary.

good morning. welcome back to 9news now. our time is 5:14. it's friday of the that's the good news. howard is preparing us for some bad news coming our way. >> weather wise it's going to be a busy, long duration event here with sandy. the closer she gets to us, the worse it's going to be. some of the rains could be here starting saturday night. sunday looks wednesday, monday looks wet and still unsented halloween. buck -- unsettled halloween. buckle glup that will be a problem for all those kiddies out there. >> that's why we make raincoats and all those things. let's start with sandy and the latest satellite imagery. sandy looks like she's already beginning to transition from a purely tropical system to maybe something that we call a post- tropical storm. it's going to have some tropical characteristics here probably for a few more days. also as it may be weakening a little bit now, we're still expecting it to maybe

reintensify as that trough that gets closer to it as we head into later parts of the weekend. 80 mile an hour sustained winds gusting to 100. the latest advisory from the hurricane center maintaining a category 1 hurricane as we watch it stay off shore the southeastern u.s. going to throw some wind, rain and wave action, especially along the coast. the wind field is expanding. the storm force winds could extend 300 miles. miles. by monday morning look at this. it's parallelling the north carolina-virginia border. there could be rain out of this saturday night, even sunday and it gets closer to us monday and even closer as we head toward tuesday. this is the latest track. it will fluctuate the next few days. the closer it gets to us, the worse it's going to be for us. right now cape may, atlantic city are kind of in the bull's eye right now. the cone goes from montauk point to atlantic city.

we could still have this adjusting. we want to stay on the west side of this and we want it more to the north. even on wednesday morning, only going to be near harrisburg. this will continue to produce some rain and some wind. there are going to be some problems around here. let's get this thing farther away from us and we'll be in better shape. at this scenario, we could have damaging winds with trees down, power outages and heavy rain. some localized flooding. we'll know more as we get closer to it. i just wanted to prep you on it. a quick look at the models. while it looks consistent through monday morning, look at the spread as we get into tuesday and wednesday now. just about everything making that turn again from around montauk point down toward ocean city. we have to watch this one. let's talk about today's forecast. the bus stop forecast. we've got clouds out there, some spoy drizzle, patchy fog, 50s and 60s. sunrise 7:29. for today we start like yesterday with cloudy skies. midday still cloudy65. but this afternoon some

sunshine should break out in spots. that will boost us to about 71. winds east at a to 10. fog a little bit of a problem. south-of-town now, mile and a half in stafford. quarter mile in petersburg. easton doing a little bit better but we still have sissibility issues -- have visibility issues on the eastern shore. 59 in easton. 61 hagerstown. 64 fredricksburg. so fairly uniform temperatures. outside on our michael & son weather camera, there are the low clouds moving in toward d.c. with 63 degrees and cloudy skies and a light northeast wind. we'll watch the clouds break up some this afternoon. i just want to steal a few seconds. i've got to show this because by saturday, we're not bad through the middle of the day. saturday night watch how some of the moisture starts to come up into sunday. that is in advance of sandy. looking at the forecast today, 71. tonight 50s to near 60. could be a little more fog late tonight. an an isolated shower saturday 67 till saturday night. sunday i think is going to

unprecedented by it's darn near close. the quarterback burns is lost for the season. a misplaced bone in the foot. you're probably saying to yourself having the terps lost other quarterbacks, they have cy brown, perry hills as well, acl. also yesterday, pierre garcon told reporters he has a torn ligament in his foot and he's not sure when he will be back. mike shanahan says it's a matter of pain toll answer. garcon who missed no games last year as a colt says there isn't a lot he can do about his injury. also good news, london fletcher not dealing with a foot injury. just joking. the bad news is he's got a strained hammy and he also missed practice yesterday to see a specialist for balance problems. not sure if it's associated with a concussion but he's certainly questionable for sunday. finally last night the

good morning. welcome back to 9news now. i'm andrea roane. happy friday. >> it sounds so good. >> because saturday and sunday is going to sound terrible. >> i'm jessica doyle in for mike hydeck. thank you for joining us this morning. monika will have a traffic in a moment and howard starts us off with weather first. >> saturday won't be so bad. sunday is going to go downhill. then next week we have troubles with sandy. we'll really detail that for you in about 15 minute. today i want to talk about your friday forecast because we've got some low clouds, fog, spotty drizzle. this is kind of a neat camera shot in our tower in northwest d.c. you can see the cloud deck lowering still right at the surface but we've got some spotty drizzle as well. temperatures are running anywhere from the upper 50s to low 60s with the high humidity, low clouds. we won't see very much in the way of warping through midday with the clouds hanging out. 56 by noon. sunshine this afternoon should help boost us like yesterday into the lower 70s.

still very mild for this time of year. we've got fog quarter mile visibility at petersburg. zero in the shenandoah valley. we're looking at a mile and a half in easton. some areas have been below a mile this morning. there are the temperatures. very uniform from 57 in luray to the warm spot being 64 on the bay. we're 63. these are the northern fringe clouds from sandy already off the carolina coast. there's a cold front out to the west. they're going to come together and bring us plenty of rain and maybe plenty of problems by early next week and even sunday. here comes monika. she's got timesaver traffic. i'm glad to say there are no big problems right now. at least we've got that going for us on the roadways this morning. the beltway behind me looks great. we're zooming into the west side of town. if you're coming off the beltway to the gw parkway, you're fine. no problems on the toll road or 66 inside the beltway looking good as well. let's take a live look if you're planning to head over to the northbound side of 95. a little bit foggy. no issues other than that as you head up toward the beltway

leaving route 644. you can see that all lanes are moving right now and 395 rest assured looks great to the 14th street bridge. we'll go back over to our maps and this time to the other side coming in on 95, route 32, 29 everything looks good coming in from the north. a quick look at beltway at university boulevard. i'll be back with more at 5:39. back to you guys. >> thank you, monika. president obama has made history in campaign 2012. thursday he began -- he became the first sitting president to participate in early voting. the president cast his ballot at his polling place in chicago. the obama campaign homes the push to get voters out early will give him an edge in the battleground states. >> we want to remove every impediment there is for everyone to be able to exercise their constitutional rights and vote. >> we see people who sometimes miss elections coming out, taking advantage of early voting and that's helping us close the gap with democrats. >> meanwhile republican campaign workers think early voting might benefit their cause instead.

mitt romney is scheduled to make three stops in virginia this sunday with the first one being in haymarket. more than seven million people have already cast their vote for president. along the east coast the campaign is taking a bit of a back seat to hurricane sandy. 9news now reporter kristin fisher live at pepco's d.c. headquarters where preparations are under way. good morning, kristin. >> reporter: good morning, jessica. are you ready for this? it's hard to believe it's almost november and here we are having to deal with hurricane sandy pepco and bge have already activated their emergency plans. bge even issued a statement saying its customers should be prepared for, quote, hundreds of thousands potential outages if the storm does indeed turn in our direction. pepco is already calling out to crews in other states for

reinforcement. >> we've activated our teams. contractors are ready and available immediately to help address restoration efforts if we need to do them. >> reporter: pepco and the other power companies clearly trying to get out and get ahead of the storm. it's safe to say folks in this region don't have a ton of faith they'll be able to keep the lights on, especially if this does indeed turn into a super storm or frankenstorm as it's starting to be called. yesterday people started stocking up on all the supplies, batteries, lights. people at this lowe's were shelling out anywhere from $800 to 1200 bucks for generators. they say they've been stuck without power before. they do not want to do it again, emily as we're start -- especially as we're starting to get into the cold weather. a lot of people were buying supplies to help clean out their gutters and drains. it's always important to keep those drains clean but in the fall, we've got a lot more

leaves now in gutters and drains than we normally would at the heart of the hurricane season. so now more than ever it's important to clean them out so if big rains do indeed come, all the rain will get out and away from your home. home. would advise you to check that out before the storm comes close, hits. let's keep our fingers crossed it doesn't get too close. >> that's excellent advice. i'm putting it on my to do list. thank you so much. kristin fisher live at pepco headquarters. in other news the man accused of opening fire inside the family research council offices is due in court later today. that's because he has been indicted on additional counts. he's now charged with committing an act of terrorism while armed. he always faced attempted murder and aggravated charges. he's accused of shooting a security guard in the lobby of the headquarters. leo johnson is credited with restraining corkins until police arrived. a fire engine that

responded to the world trade center on 9/11 has a new home in northern virginia. the fire engine was towed into folksville yesterday. it will -- nokesville yesterday. it will become part of the war museum. the fire department in new york recovered and restored just four of the fire engines from the world trade center. tomorrow is the 22nd make a difference day. it's a great opportunity to go out and help those in need in your community. we have sandra here with us. i love your t-shirt, hands helping each other. what is make a difference day? >> make a difference day is the nation's largest day of volunteering. over three million people are expected to come out in a single day. it's sponsored by gannett's u.s.a. weekend magazine points of light and newman's own. >> this has been a 20-year

don't focus so much on the center in some respects but consider the cone as well. they're going to maintain it as a hurricane. here we are sunday morning and even into monday morning as it starts to turn back to the northwest. i don't like seeing this at all. monday 2:00 still 80 mile an hour winds. it's actually going to intensify a little bit more when it gets up here because it's going to be interacting with upper level conditions that will be favorable for a strong, maybe an epic nor'easter whether it abhurricane or post -- to be a hurricane or post tropical storm. potential land fall early tuesday morning. right now the center of the path is in the delaware bay n. would be devastating to cape may, atlantic city, those areas but it would still bring rain or wind, maybe heavy winds around here as well. the windfield will expand. the 50, 60 mile an hour winds could still be a hundred, 120 miles from the center with tropical storm force winds. the 30 mile an hour winds or greater. those could be 300 miles from the center. if we get several inches of rain and winds 30, 40, 50 miles

the wilson bridge. we'll take a live look there at the wilson bridge and across the potomac river into alexandria in springfield traffic is moving really well. i'll be back with more at 6:00. back to you. >> thank you, monika. making news now at 5:51 as we follow hurricane sandy, the storm has shut down schools along florida's southeast coast even though as howard said it is well off shore. outer rain bands are pelting the area for a second straight day. flooding is reported in many places and thorpts are urging sur -- authorities are urging surfers not to risk their safety. new england coastal communities are taking action as well before sandy's expected arrival. public works crews in connecticut are filling sandbags and double checking their equipment to make sure everything is working properly before its needed. residents are be urged to prepare for power outages as well. managers at the as teak -- assateague state park ground are thankful they were already scheduled to close this year this sunday. camping is allowed year round at the nearby national seashore.
