hello and thank you for joining us, i'm j.c. hayward. a young man is dead after he stabbed his grandfather and then confronted police with a knife. shots rang out early this morning on 17th street northeast near newton street. kristin fisher has more now

from the scene. >> reporter: well, this all started around 6:30 this morning. a grandfather called police and said that his grandson was attacking him. but when d.c. police got to this home on 17th street, that grandson turned on them. here's d.c. police chief cathy la near to describe what happened next. >> when they arrived on scene and came up to the house, apparently the suspect came up attacked the officers. >> reporter: one officer a ten year veteran was stabbed several times in the neck, head and hands. that officer then pulled out his gun and opened fire. >> we believe the suspect was hit instantly. and is remaining here on the scene. he is deceased here on the scene. >> we heard all these police cars and fire truck, ambulances and then apparently the helicopter. >> reporter: this man lives just a few doors down. and he's lived there for the last 37 years. >> nothing like this has ever

happened in this neighborhood in my time that i'm aware of. >> reporter: both the grandfather and officer were taken to the hospital with serious but nonlife-threatening injuries. >> this is pretty traumatic for all the works that work together. the last thing we ever want to do is take a life and it's very upsetting. >> reporter: at least in this case, understandable. what's not upped just yet is -- understood just yet is why the grandson was attacking his grandfather to begin with. d.c. police say that's all part of their ongoing investigation. in northeast washington, kristin fisher, 9news now. bge is close to restoring power to all its d.c. region customers. we just checked with them, and they are reporting that 620 customers in anne arundel county are still without power. there are 51 outages in howard county. and there are 11 outages in prince george's county. 12 in montgomery county. excuse me.

hope is on the way -- help is on the way for thousands of new jersey residents without power. dominion power is sending -- excuse me. 1500 workers -- along with the fleet of trucks to new jersey tomorrow. the crews will be in the state for at least two weeks. those crews are heading to new jersey, they'll have their work cut out for them. right now more than a million and a half residents are still without power but as alison harmelin reports for many going days without power is the least of their troubles. >> reporter: this storm left just half the house. the roof somehow intact while the water tore away floors and doors. >> it was just cut out. >> reporter: many of the neighbors here are just as bad

in union beach, new jersey. this storm was dropped -- house was dropped hundreds of yards away. >> just complete and upper devastation in many areas here. >> reporter: cars lined up for miles to find gas on the new jersey turnpike. supplies are running low. without power to run the pumps, more than half the state's gas stations are closed. where they're open police are managing frustrated crowds. >> all day man. no gas. it's like what we going to do? >> reporter: along the new jersey coast, crews are beginning the monumental clean- up. the many of those homes will be to be completely demolished before rebuilding can begin. a combination of the wind and the storm surge blew a hole right through this home. the floor is covered in sand. the house is gutted front to back. >> i don't know whether people are going to come back in the summer. i don't know what's going to happen. >> reporter: near atlantic city, police are allowing residents back in to see the damage. traffic backed up while

officers checked out ids. some will find their homes standing. but for others, all along the devastated shoreline where white picket fences use today stand, this is what's left. alison harmelin for cbs news, new jersey. >> more than a million people remain without power in new jersey as of this time. nearly half of new york's deaths from hurricane sandy happened on staten island. residents are outraged and many believe the communithas been ignored in the days following sandy while aid goes to other parts of new york and new jersey. power is out and dozens of streets are impassable. meanwhile, authorities at fauquier county are also investigating a stabbing and deadly shooting involving a police officer there. the incident started as a dui crash investigation. but ended in gunfire along tacketts mill. surae chinn joins us live from cedar run, virginia with more on what happened. surae, unusual story. >> reporter: it is.

and i'll help you walk through this strange investigation. but i will tell you virginia state police just finished a press briefing less than an hour ago. it started as a dui crash as you mentioned, howard, down the street here just across the bend right there. the investigation is still ongoing. eight hours after this deadly shooting happened. well, the single car crash happened down the road around 4:00 this morning. deputies were called to the scene to what appeared to be a dui crash. well the investigation led officers to a house a half a mile away from here in the 12 how block of tacketts mill road in fauquier county. this morning authorities said when officers confronted the suspect who had a knife and cut one of the officers at the residence, that's when an officer pulled out a gun and opened fire killing the suspect. but in the latest press briefing at 11:00 they would not confirm that the suspect had a knife.

now state police would not again confirm the identity -- the name of this suspect. we had heard earlier that he was a 17-year-old but again, very few details are coming out at this hour. we do know both the counties responded because the crash what happened right on the county lines and so at this point, they're not even saying who and which agency is responsible for that deadly shooting. a lot more is expected to come out later this afternoon. a press briefing is heduled for 3:00 in stafford county at the stafford county headquarters at the sheriff's department there. but again, everything happened in fauquier county. we are going to sort it all out later on this afternoon once the press briefing is completing back to you howard. >> thanks surae chinn. here at wusa9 we're donating $1 for every one of you who likes us on facebook.

the presidential election is just four days way and both campaigns are putting all their efforts into battleground states. the candidates are targeting those undecided voters, those who may be left and may be influenced by today's unemployment report. danielle nottingham has more. >> reporter: the president started his campaign day in franklin county, ohio, with some better than expected unemployment numbers. >> this morning, we learned the companies hired more workers in october than at any time in the last eight months. [ cheering and applause ] >> reporter: and employers added 171,000 new jobs in october, about 45,000 more than many analysts anticipated. and the labor department says hiring over the summer was better than previously thought.

despite the improvement, the president is still facing a high unemployment rate. because more americans are trying to find work, it ticked up from 7.8% to 7.9%. that's the highest number an incumbent president has faced on election day since franklin roosevelt. mitt romney says he'll do a better job if voters put him in the white house. the republican nominee is spending the last few days of the campaign making that case in the battleground states. romney is in iowa and ohio today, trying to pick up the few remaining undecided voters. >> and we ask you to stay at it all the way to the finish line. because we're going to win on tuesday night. [ cheering and applause ] >> reporter: the race is tight in nine swing states. the latest polls also show the race tightening in pennsylvania, a state once thought to be easily in the president's win column. the romney campaign is now making a late push to take pennsylvania. >> thank you. >> reporter: rom fee will visit the state on sunday. danielle nottingham, cbs news, the white house.

all right, your weather first here. 12:127 and we are dealing with some winds this afternoon. not too much wind this morning but we had more clouds. this upper disturbance pushing through really kicking up the winds. have a mix of sun and clouds and northwesterly winds at about 18 and could gust 25 or so this afternoon with high temperatures approaching the mid 50s here by 3:00. by 5:00 52. mid 40s by 2349 and with a west wind we could have some windchills actually down in the upper 30s here during the second half of the games. now the clouds rolled in early this morning. we're starting to see some breaks here and we'll see the clouds hanging out tough in the mountains with the winds starting to kick as well. others times mostly sunny like it is right now. temps where the sun is out we have low 50s and annapolis and patuxent river naval air station but with the clouds still in the mid 40s here. in garrett county where they have more than 2 feet of snow

the other day from sandy. only 32 at oakland and 45 cumberland. look at the wind gusts you'll see they're gusting now 23 in d.c. and 25 gaithersburg. 24 in winchester. so it does look like it's going to be breezy to windy this afternoon. outside on our michael & son weather camera, and we're in tysons corner here, looking out to the west, we've got some fair weather clouds that have popped up. decent amount of sunshine at the moment but this could go mostly cloudy here in the next 20, 30 minutes. the brisk northwesterly winds at 17 miles an hour and dew points in the low 30s and the temperature at national sits at 53 degrees. cold air continues to come through the northern part of the country. this is all being pulled down from the remains of sandy. only going to be in the 30s and 40s from the northern steer states from right into pennsylvania and western maryland and west virginia with 80s to near 90 in the dallas area today. got three storms. got a big storm in the gulf of alaska throwing so much

moisture here in the pacific northwest. some lighter snow in north dakota. the third storm is this one. that's what's left of sandy. this monster storm still affecting us days and days late we are the coolness and the sun -- coolness and the unsettledness going orange. a few showers on the north carolina and virginia border and in the mountains again seeing some rain and snow showers there and you know if we have a sprinkle north of town today that wouldn't be the craziest thing. don't if surprised about that. generally a mix of sun and clouds and in the evening hours the sunsets and start to clear out some, looks like a generally clear to partly cloudy night and a cold night. we're dipping into the 30s near 40 in town and by the way. but low to mid-30s in most areas by saturday morning. saturday morning is going to be another breezy chilly morning. but a sunny day for the most part with highs tomorrow into the low 50s, might see somebody near 54 or 55. and then on sunday another disturbance, looks like it's

going to pass down. the weekend looks dry just a little bit on the cool side. today 55. breezy. tonight we'll dip into the 30s and tomorrow breezy again. tot the autism walk down on the national mall and topper is going to be down there starting at 9:00. the walk kicks off at 10:00. sunday 52 and got the terps and the skins home. so weather should be good for that. saturday night by the way, clocks set them back. change your batteries in the smoke detectors, weather looks fine through election day and a nor'easter on wednesday. we're going into the kitchen when 9news now at noon returns.
