e-mails from petraeus' then girlfriend paula broadwell. she has asked for privacy. she and her family have been friends with the petraeuses for several years. broadwell appeared to view kelle ye as a romantic -- kelley as a romantic rival even though it appears that was not the case. as we're learning more details about exactly how this all unfolded, we're also learning about the investigation and members of the intelligence committee say they received no advanced warning that an investigation was even going o. they say that is a huge problem. >> this is mething that could have had an effect on national sciewrpt. i think we should -- national security. i think we should have been told. there is a way to do it. >> it would have been very difficult to continue in his position if he had subordinates who may have engaged in similar activity. how would he deal with that. i know that was his thought process and at the end ever the

day he did do the right -- of the day he did do the right thing. >> reporter: there will be meetings between the f.b.i. and intelligence committee leaders. again the focus on whether there were any national security implications here and also why those committee members were not told about this information they say they should have known about. we'll have to continue to see how this all unfolds and exactly what the investigation and those hearings this week will reveal. at 6:03, jessica doyle is here with another your money report. >> the cliff check. cliff notes this morning. the fiscal cliff. >> starting tomorrow the pressure is really, really on for congress. hard-core. the reon why lawmakers are returning from their lame-duck session and have just 16 scheduled work days to stop a potential recession next year. they meet tomorrow. the way things are right now on january 1, a $600 billion package of austerity measures kick in to cut the deficit.

we're talking a series of tax hikes and spending cuts that could cripple the local and national economy. the president and a group of bipartisan congressional leaders will hold their first fiscal cliff meeting on friday. republicans and democrats of course taking to the sunday talk shows with their agendas but both sides did indicate there could be a growing bipartisan consensus that any solution must include a combination of spending cuts and revenue increases. in the other financial headache hanging over global economies, there is a step forward to tell you about in the greek debt crisis. greek lawmakers have approved the country's 2013 austerity budget. this is a key step in greece's efforts to persuade its internional creditors to unblock a rescue loan installment. without this the country will go bankrupt. it's going to cost you a little bit more to prepare the thanksgiving meal this year but the total cost would actually have been lower this year if it weren't for the bird. the american farm bureau of federation estimate it is will

your tuesday morning commute. let's check in with monika samtani. pretty skies. aim sorry, andrea and mike, pretty skies. what do you have for us? we have a candlelight vigil we want to -- we have a candlelight vigil we want to tell you about. it was held sunday night for a second grade teacher and husband who lived in one of the homes destroyed by the explosion in an indianapolis neighborhood. it's not what caused the blast. two people were killed and homes were left ininhabittable for blocks. as many as 31 houses may have to be demolished. you can see from looking at this video just how devastating this explosion was. we have an update now this morning on an armed robbery and shooting near the white house last week. one of the victims says the getaway car was caught on tape by a surveillance camera attached to the front of his business. the man who does not want to be identified was robbed at

gunpoint. there were four sus pictures. they're -- suspects. they're still at large and some of the victims are fearing they will strike again. police are aggressively following leads looking for a silver or white lincoln with d.c. license plates marked ec0424. a columbian, maryland taco bell manager is in critical condition after a gunman opened fired in his store. the victim was confronted by on two men outside the restaurant early sunday morning. they shot the manager several times before they took off. all other employees who were there at the time called 911. still ahead when we come back, a new look at a case that has eluded police for decades. this is the one involving the east coast rapist. >> in hours of telephone interviews from his jail cell, aaron thomas publicly acknowledges he attacked women in several states. >> coming up next, we have the reporter to that to him.

petraeus' girlfriend broadwell. kel yi had the investigation investigate the threatening e- mails and that's what led the eventual resignation of petraeus. members of the intelligence committee say they're shocked by the news but also shocked they weren't told about the investigation sooner than they were. they received no advanced notice that that was going on. some are calling for a full investigation. others say if there are no national security implications, then we should move on. >> his resignation is a loss for the country but i understand why he had to resign. >> if there's no affect of the affair on national security, i think we need to move on. >> this is something that could have had an effect on national security. i think we should have been told. there is a way to do it. >> reporter: on wednesday the f.b.i. meets with the intelligence

committee leaders. again, the focus there on national security implications, access to information as well as why the committee members were not told that this investigation was going on, information they say they should have had access to. there's also as the investigation continues focus on the legacy of petraeus. obviously he's a very high profile individual, one of the best known generals of his generation. we'll have to continue to see how this continues to play out and again what those meetings here on capitol hill will reveal later this week. back to you. >> thank you live on capitol hill this morning. secretary of homeland security janet napolitano visited new york city on sunday and toured staten island. she told state and local officials her department and fema are committed to helping everyone in the region who are impacted by super storm sandy. >> the number one issue as we move forward is the housing. now finally identifying those

houses susceptible to quick repair and then helping people get those quick repairs so they can get back in and begin the cleanout process and the like. >> staten island was particularly hard hit by the huge storm. the man suspected in rape cases alog the east coast says he doesn't know -- along the east coast says he doesn't know why he couldn't stop attacking women for nearly two decades. his unusual pretrial confessions offer the first real picture of the man who eluded police for decades and he made these confessions over the phone from his jail cell to washington reporter josh white. at one point he says he needs help with this problem, i don't think i'm crazy but something is wrong with me. josh, thank you for being with us. first, how did you convince aaron thomas to even talk with you? >> initially i wrote him a letter when he was up in connecticut and when he was moved to virginia, i wrote him another series of letters and began conversations with his

family. ultimately i was able to get him to give me a call and it started from there. we spoke many, many times. >> how many hours was the conversation? >> it's hard to say exactly but it was dozens of hours. it was many, many phone calls over several months. >> at one point in the interview he said i feel like an animal. he tells you he can't even remember the faces of some of his victims. >> from our conversations, the way that he described it is these things just happened. he couldn't describe exactly why or what led up to them but he would get a feeling. wee go out on to the street. he would see someone and then an attack would occur. he described every one of the victims as an object. he didn't really understand why it was happening or really the damage that he was doing as it was happening. >> what we need to understand is brutal in his commission of crimes, but he is the son of a police lieutenant. his mother was a working woman. seemingly a normal family. how did he go from that existence to being this brutal

rapist? >> i think it's a very complex issue. for him it was a combination of very difficult childhood. he said he was very harshly disciplined by his father. he had a very hard time growing up with his father. and started to get into trouble. dehave some emotional problems. he spent some time in a psychiatric fate and went to a -- facility and went to a school where he was getting help. after being kicked out of his home, he had a lot of trouble on the streets. >> what did you think of him in the end? >> he's a very complex person. i think like any person out there he's not all just the east coast rapist. he is a person with a background and a history and a life. he is dangerous and he admits that and he talks about that but i think at the root of it, he's trying to understand why it is that this all happened and why he got to the place that he ended up. >> this conversation helps us understand a little bit what was going on in his mind and you can read it, josh white's

article in the "washington post." josh, thank you for being here with us. >> you're very welcome. at arlington national cemetery, president obama paid tribute to the nation's service members on veterans day. the president says the wreath he laid at the tomb of the unknown is intended to remember every service member who was ever worn our nation's uniform. he urged americans to welcome back soldiers who are coming home now. the president also noted this is the first veterans day in a decade with no american troops fighting in iraq. this is what the veterans day parade looked like in new york city this weekend. thousands lined the trees of manhattan for the parade cheering and waving flags. volunteers also collected winter coats for those in need nearly two weeks after super storm sandy hit the area. a reminder today the federal government is closed and there's no mail delivery except for express mail. we had a warm weekend. looks like a cold front is going to change things in the
