nights and pretty cool days for the last stretch. but at least we've had a little bit of improvement. we have a few wind gusts west of town this morning. things are looking pretty good for us in the city center and around the beltway. partly to mostly cloudy skies at this hour. things are going to change though. still i think temperatures will have the opportunity to move out of the 30s and into the 40s. lower range not 40s not bad as we wrap up the year. we will see a bit of ha a breeze mainly out of the north and northwest. that's going to keep the feels like temperature a little bit brisk. by afternoon though cloud cover starts to move and the opportunity for accumulating snow later on tonight and into tomorrow morning. so here's what we're dealing with right now. nice quiet view from our michael & son weather camera. it does look like our temperatures though are pretty chilly. only 37 degrees for reagan national airport at this hour. we'll have a little bit of sunshine through mid-morning bring in some cloud cover midday and into the afternoon.

and definitely see the opportunity for that snow showers to begin overnight tonight. temperatures are in the 30s but it's definitely feeling like the 20s and below. wind bundle up as -- bundled up as you head out. we are in a green weather alert for today with the wind advisory already popping in for the northern and western counties at midnight tonight. beverly? we're checking out the ride olga for folks dry pavement this morning along with the extra friday light volume. if you head in on 66 front royal on into falls church and across the teddy roosevelt bridge. here's northbound 95 heading into springfield with the pace good. no active work zones to worry about out of fredericksburg through stafford into quantico. on to woodbridge and spring feed. eing open to go south from that terrible accident last night. that's been completely removed and lanes are open on 395 heading up into 14th street bridge the downtown. maryland of note we've had an issue southbound on 355 with the water main repreships last

night. southbound in bethesda at cedar lane and the long-term work zone, one lane squeezed by to the right. old georgetown road might be a better bet heading into bethesda earl year this morning. back to you. thank you. so what's the holiday season without the holiday parties? police want to warn drivers not to get behind the wheel if they've been drinking. >> it is definitely worth repeating because it can save lives. this morning we're going to break some of the popular drinking myths to help keep your alcohol intake under control. delia goncalves has been working on the story, really interesting. she gave me a sneak peek of the video yesterday. >> reporter: it's incredible video and all morning long we're going to introduce folks to what park police are doing this weekend to kind of crack down on this kind of activity. but these myths i didn't make them up. and i'm not breaking the myths let's just get that straight. these are coming from trained experts within the park police.

the first myth? drinking on an empty stomach will get you more drunk. we all think so. well, that's wrong. and those drinking water in- between each cocktail, police say it will only make your hangover worse the next day. park police sergeant adam zalinsky is part of a specialized traffic unit made up of a small group of highly trained officers in the park police. the drug recognition experts or dres will be on patrol this weekend and are on a mission to keep your party off the road. we'll get back to that myth about drinking on an empty stomach. well, the sergeant says drinking and eating at the same time is actually worse. >> 20% of that alcohol gets absorbed through the stomach lining directly into the bloodstream. then as you eat, and your food digests it causes your slinger to relax which in turn allows the alcohol and food to go down into the large and small intestine.

and welcome back. it is 5:09. i'm olga breese in for howard bernstein this morning. chilly temperatures, everyone sitting in the 30s but feeling like the lower 30s. little bit of a wind out of the north near 10 miles per hour. we'll definitely sew some sunshine through early morning. by midday though you watch the cloud cover increase and we're partly cloudy for most of the day and then mostly cloudy by sun set. temperatures should make it into the middle range to lower 40s by late afternoon. and as we head into saturday, morning, a chance for snow. beverly? olga, we're checking out the ride for folks in virginia. where any overnight road work should be put to bed and out of the way. looking good in on 66 to make it into the beltway and inside the beltway through falls church on to rosslyn everything open for you here on 66. now our next timesaver traffic update we'll tell you about a water main break in bethesda

that may impact the ride back to you. a young man found shot to death in a car. police responded to the scene early thursday near the corner of dry log street and pepper mill drive in capitol heights. officers say once they got there they found nicholas battle suffering from a gunshot wound. the 21-year-old was pronounced dead on the scene. if you have any information about this please call police. virginia state police responded to nearly 700 wrecks across the commonwealth this week. two of them were deadly. so here are a few tips from aaa to keep you safe on the road. make sure your tires are properly inflated. so you're never going to want to mix the radial tires with other tire types. keep the gas tank at least half full to avoid freezeups. also avoid using the parking brake in cold and rainy weather. don't use the cruise control on any slippery surfaces and always look and steer where you want to go. just some thought especially since we have some snow in the

coming up on it's about 5:14. weather time. it is friday morning so if you're just getting up and getting started. olga is going to tell you how you need to dress. hey olga. >> good morning, very cold. we have temperatures in the pros a little -- 30s, a little bit of a windchill but not too bad compared it's last couple of days. feeling like the upper 20s and lower 30s so you want to definitely dress for that. forecast for today, it's going to feature a little bit of morning sunshine. we're still overcast from our michael & son weather camera over the capitol building. but as we head in toward the afternoon, though, things should feature a little bit of sunshine and then some more cloud cover late in the day. winds out of the northwest 3 miles per hour. temperatures in the 30s not too bad. feeling though like much cooler than that. although we're looking at a

temperature for leesburg at 33. it is actually feeling more like 26. overall today, though, i think this is going to be a nice finish to the week. an abbreviated workweek for most. our futurecast forecast model i want to pop this in and show you the timing of the snow i'm expecting to arrive after midnight tonight. this morning we're mainly in the clear just a few passing clouds. we'll see some more cloud cover begin to develop late in the day i think after sunset we become mostly cloudy overnight tonight. and i've stopped this around 2:00 a.m. that's when we'll start to see the light snow showers develop across the western counties. a rain/snow mix down to southern virginia and south of the virginia line though. it remains all rain. by the time we get into the afternoon on saturday, this moves through fairly quickly. and again it's going to be a very light snow. so accumulations of only about an inch or two. then saturday night into sunday morning things look pretty good. so the forecast for today is going to feature temperatures in the lower range 40s with the

exception of the city center which should get to about 44 degrees. overall though, we're sticking with a green weather alert for today. tomorrow, a different story. the rain and snow will begin after midnight. start to mix out to all rain late in the day but still it's going to be slushy and messy into much of tomorrow afternoon. then by sunday, if you're headed to the big game, partly cloudy and breezy. especial hi after sunset. and those temperatures drop back toward the freezing mark. it will be a fairly good start to the workweek, i know a will the of folks are headed back to -- a lot of folks are headed back to work on monday morning after the christmas break. we're going to see temperatures in the mid 40s. we're checking out the ride the liter volume as you mentioned this weekend between the holidays. i will note folks that southbound 355 you're going to have to deal with a water main break at least through a portion of the morning rush hour. this is southbound near cedar lane in that long-term work zone. a water main break developed last night.

crews are still out there working one lane able to squeeze by to the right. that will be the case at least into a portion of the morning rush hour. old georgetown road may be a better bet for you to head down to bethesda if you're leaving early this morning out of rockville. also in maryland, maryland crash in waldorf on 301 at smallwood drive. st. charles we've got one lane blocked each way. the left lane blocked each way. police tell me this was an ice related crash and even after they clear the vehicles state highway crews will have to come and treat the road surface. careful out there with the cold temperatures and icy conditions. virginia drivers no complications northbound 95 heading into springfield. everything open for you as you make your way into quantico. woodbridge and springfield. the overnight crash on the inner loop ramp to go south on 95 has completely been resolved and removed. in on 66 we've been good too. the ride to mans is, centerville into vienna and for that matter into the beltway into falls church. back to you. you got to watch this one. caught on camera, an aquarium

explosion in china. take a look at this. surveillance video from inside a shanghai shopping mall shows the aquarium's thick glass giving way sending waters as you can see there gushing everywhere. 16 people were hurt in this incident. most of them by flying or floating glass and one person actually suffered some broken bones as a result. officials say a combination of the aging aquarium and the cold temperatures caused that glass to break. >> boy. okay, 5:18. time now for another look at the question of the day -- >> our facebook friend netty thinks the answer is -- >> so we're going to have more of your answers in the next 30 minutes and we will be right back. keep it here, you're watching

and welcome back. on this brisk friday morning. we have some cool temperatures starting out in the 30s a little bit of overcast skies. mostly cloudy this morning. but we'll work in some sunshine particularly by that 9:00, 10:00 hour. we'll move out of the 30s upper 30s to near 40 degrees by noontime but later on this afternoon i'm expecting the cloud cover to start to move on in and actually take over overnight tonight. we should hit a high in the lower 40s by late afternoon.

why. ♪ >> reporter: they are the d res. the six drug recognition experts inside the u.s. park police department trained in this science behind field sobriety tests. skills that help these few officers identify and lock up a record number of drunk drivers. >> your breath test results with a .103 and a .102. >> reporter: they show us how. linda volunteered for what police call a wet lab experiment. the mixed drink is stiff. made with three one ounce shots of malibu dark but it's still not the strongest. >> you look at some of the drinks that are out there on the market today. a zombie or a long island tea, they're pretty much a dwi in a glass. >> reporter: after a drink and a half linda is already .05.

it receiving the award for the most arrests. officer farthing killed by a drunk driver during a check point back in august of 2002. the station named in his honor. the officers patrol in his memory. >> it's a viral problem that we have in society today. you know people go out there and drink and have a good time and i have no problem with that at all. but when you get into a car and start driving on the roadways where you're putting lives this danger you're basically a killer that hasn't killed yet. >> reporter: these officers are very passionate about what they do. and listen, we are not giving away any secrets to the test because essentially these cops say if you're impaired if you're over the limit, there's no way you can control your behavior. >> right. >> so you can't control your eye movements and you can't control you know, the outcome of the test. >> you know a big take away for me watching that is how quickly she became impaired with two drinks but a lot of shots in those drinks. that goes quick.

individual investors pulled $150 billion out of the stock market in year and believe it or not that's the third year in a low. but institution investors they've been doubling down the hedge funds, the pension funds, they've been adding to their stock group positions pouring more than $80 billion into stocks so far this year. mortgage rates fell to near record lows again this week. freddie mac says the average rate on the 30 year loan went to 3.35%. that's not very far away from the record of 3.31% we reach a month ago. low mortgage rates are making home buying more affordable and allowing americans to refinance their loans. more americans are shifting to e-books. a pew research study finds 23% of americans have read an electronic book this yearment that's up from 16% last year. at the same time, readers of traditional books dropped from 72% to 67%. and about a third of americans own an e-book device such as a tablet, a kindle, a nook, an ipad and that kind of thing and

it is 5:4. time for your weather first. and it's cold outside. >> it's cold. we're cranking up a little bit of a breeze this morning. out on the weather terrace it was quite chilly and we have some windchills right now at this hour into the 20s. upper 20s but yes very brisk. those winds will die down though prior to sunrise and it looks like the forecast for today is a nice one. mainly sunny skies through late morning. the view from the michael & son weather camera not too bad. but it is overcast at this hour. we will get some more sunshine through midday and then the clouds move in later on this afternoon. temperatures should make it out of the 30s and near 40 degrees by 12:00. this afternoon mainly the lower 40s for most of us. 44 degrees in town for our high today. but overall it looks like pretty nice finish to the week. satellite and radar features a lot of cloud cover.

roadway there. mike? thanks bev. 5:48 now. it is 37 degrees outside right now. and it's giving you an excuse not to work out. we're not going to let you do that because even with the windchill it can feel like the 20s and teens depending on where you're waking up this morning. this gentleman is going to help us. his name is josh bookbinder from lifetime fitness. based out of columbia, maryland right? >> right. >> he has some activities that are hysterical. just like playing a game with your family and also involves trying to stay healthy. >> absolutely. >> let's talk about the ideas. the playing cards here. we have a ball. we have a -- big container full of papers with stuff on it. let's start with the playing cards. what are we doing with that? >> sure. the deck of cards workout is basically where you take each suit and we have four different suits and you can choose four different exercises whether it be lunges, squats, whatever it is that you want and you feel like doing. each base will note how many reps you're going to do. if you pull a face card it's going to be 10. if you pull a 6 -- >> pick a card. any card. >> we have the jack of

diamonds. that would be a ten and ten push-ups. >> as i'm doing those if i can, let's talk about what's in the jar too. >> all right. the ten push-ups keep the core nice and tight. the jar is our activity jar. we write down the family members' favorite activities and put them in the jar and during a commercial breaks watching your favorite tv show. pull that one out and do that number of exercises during the commercial. >> let's check one of those. >> absolutely. if you're doing this one in the commercial. i'll take this one here. this is -- that one is empty. hold on. there we go. lunges. two minutes worth of lunges during the commercial break. >> that's a long set of lunges. >> this can actually be a lot of fun where you sort of can kind of needle your family members. ha ha this one is yours for the next two minutes. these things actually help people get involved because really you're thinking about as we were talking about. windchill factor, snow sometimes, ice. listen to me i'm winded a
