county border. our kristin fisher is standing by and she has the latest information. kristin? >> reporter: well, what happened was three people were in a stolen car and they were driving down wheeler road when they were spotted by police. now, they just tried to speed off after police tried to pull them over but the police did not pursue them. still, they kept driving down this road i mean they were zigging and zagging out of traffic. a very dangerous situation. then they started going so fast that they sped out of control and when they tried to turn here on to southern avue they crashed into a metrobus. you see that one passing right there. and it was a head-on crash. so just take a look at what it looked like. i mean, this stolen nissan maxima was completely crushed in the front. the bus fared far better but both the driver and one passenger were taken to the hospital with very minor injuries. as for the three people in the stolen car, they have all been arrested. not only were they fleeing from police but they're also believed to have been involved

in a series of purse snatchings this morning at gas stations in hyattsville and northeast d.c.. in fact, one of their victims actually showed up here at the scene of this crash. now she's the wife of a d.c. police officer and he called and told her that the plates on the car that crashed into the metrobus actually matched to getaway car that was used after stealing her purse and listen to what she had to say. she is furious. >> i'm mad. i'm really mad. i'm really mad and i'm upset because -- because to me, they know that they out here doing this kind of stuff. but the bottom line is one day, it could be somebody in their family. that get hurt just like today. just like this morning. someone was hurt. it wasn't me luckily enough but i pray for whoever was hurt. >> reporter: the two people that were hurt were again the metrobus driver and one of the metrobus passengers on that bus. they were transported to the hospital. minor injuries expected to be -- to make a full recovery and

the three people. the three suspects in the stolen car, they were also arrested but no major life- threatening injuries there. so good news but my goodness, it was a really ugly scene here. also wheeler road, this was shut down for about two hours after the crash. now it's back open in both directions. back to you j. c.. >> all right, thank you very much kristin. police also investigating a very serious accident in rockville. sky 9 was over the scene on rockville pick and templeton lane. several vehicles were involved. the montgomery county fire department says at least four people were injured. but all the injuries appear to be nonlife-threatening. we are also keeping a close eye on the looming fiscal cliff. the deadline for across the board tax increases and deep spending cuts is just four days away. president obama is scheduled to meet with congressional leaders at the white house this afternoon. senate majority leader harry reid says the likelihood of reaching a deal is a long shot.

but senator charles schumer told the "today" show that the odds are better than people think. if a deal were to pass, senate house speaker john boehner would have to agree to take it to the floor of the republican controlled house. danielle nottingham has more. >> reporter: president obama is meeting today at the white house with top congressional democrats harry reid and nancy pelosi and leading republicans mitch mcconnell and john boehner. it's the president's first meeting with congressional leaders since november 16th. the closed door discussions are an attempt to reach a last- minute agreement to avoid automatic spending cuts and tax increases due to kick in on january 1st. >> probably the worst case scenario will come out of this maybe today and -- meeting today and that is we will kick the can down the road. >> reporter: senator bob corker told "cbs this morning" he predicts the meeting will bring only a temporary solution. >> this afternoon's meeting feels much to me like optics to

make it look like we're doing something but let me just say one more time. this is a total dereliction of duty at every level. >> reporter: going over the cliff would affect 88% of u.s. taxpayers whose taxes would go up on average $3,500 a year. many americans are frustrated the showdown has gone down to the last-minute. >> they're playing games with people's lives. and i don't mean that's correct. >> it's just unfortunate that at this point, the two sides can't come together because it's been like that for the last four or five years. >> reporter: two million americans will also lose jobless benefits on saturday if a deal isn't reached. and the nation's borrowing limits to finance our $16 trillion debt will also be reached on monday. danielle nottingham, cbs news, washington. three new jersey police officers were shot and their police station this morning. the shooter domestic assault suspect got a gun and started

firing. it happened in the township in camden county east of philadelphia. the gunman was shot and killed. the wounded officers are expected to recover. also the second time this month, someone has been pushed to their death on new york's subway tracks. the nypd says that it was a woman who pushed the male in front of a queens-bound train as it was pulling into the station. police say they are looking for the suspect. the suspect has been described as a heavyset hispanic woman. seen mumbling to herself just before that deadly push. another man was pushed to his death in front of a new york subway train on december 3rd. a spokesperson says that secretary of state hillary clinton is heading back to work next week. the former first lady has been out of the public eye for the last three weeks while she is recovering from a concussion that she has suffered.

the nation's top diplomat says that she intends to resign next month. in michigan, it's a scary dog tail but with a happy ending. an 11-year-old hound named bart slipped into the ice in lake erie. the owner called his brother who also fell in the ice. they both waited in the frigid water for over an hour until rescuers reached them. >> i was talking to him. i was trying the keep him walk -- to keep him warm. i was trying to rub him and you know get some blood flowing for his body. >> rescuers eventually got to the two of them. took them out safely. animal control officials say aside from being cold, bart was not injured. good. coming up on 9news now now, as new year's is approaching, police are cracking down on drunk drivers. and we're going to show you how they're doing it. we went on a ridealong in prince george's county. that's coming up next.

we are learning more about the victims of last night's deadly accident in northern virginia. state police say three people were killed when their pickup truck rear ended a tractor- trailer at the springfield interchange. the driver of the truck was not injured. police say all three victims are from pennsylvania and are

related. they were traveling to florida to attend a relative's funeral. well, we're helping to keep you safe this holiday weekend. new year's is just days away and police are cracking down on drunk drivers. they're urging people to keep the partying off the road. park police officers invited our delia goncalves to ride with them. ♪ >> reporter: we first met park police sergeant adam zeh lynn ski during the day. >> it's like i say to everybody it's a front row seat to the greatest show on earth. >> reporter: he says the greatest work is at night. so he invited us out friday night to bw parkway. >> we're stopping people that have alcohol levels that are on average a .16. which is double the legal limit. >> reporter: the shift starts off slow for the trained dug recognition expert, awarded for his record dui arrests. >> these tags are not legit.

won't stain it. really easily. >> one more tip. >> drink lots of water. >> of course. >> drink lots and lots of water because it will flush everything out and help neutralize the acids. they are digested by the back tier and many that caused acid and it erodes the teeth and causes decay and all the problems. as long as you can neutralize the acid all the time it will make a really big difference. >> id had -- i had the problem this week, went to the movies and got popcorn and got a popcorn kernel up in my gum for the next few days. i just started feeling sensation. where did that come from? i have a pocket? >> you probably yeah have a pocket where it got stuck in. they have to clean it owl really well for you and keep it clean, keep the area clean. that happens sometimes with popcorn. >> is there something that you can do to keep the gum from moving from the tooth? if there was any prevention that i could have used? >> well, it's flossing

regularly. brushing regularly. that will make a difference because then you don't have pockets that something can get stuck in. >> all right, great tips for 2013. to keep our smile white, bright. and happy. thank you. >> thank you. >> again have a happy few year and now -- new year and now the weekend forecast from olga. a lot of folks are smiling after the morning. some sunshine finally. the view from the michael & son weather camera. the current conditions still on the cool side. made it up to 43 degrees at reagan national and i think this high today in town will be about 44 and that's about it. we'll have some sunshine into the afternoon and early evening hours. we're tracking a snowstorm moving on in so mostly cloudy by 9:00. temperatures plummet into the 30s. and we go down toward the freezing mark past sunrise. overall though, satellite and radar is really calming down pretty much. but the storm is beginning to pop off towards the west and take a look at the current temperatures right now. although we're sitting in the 40s for most locations, it is feeling much cooler than that. feeling like 39 at reagan national. and 31 at gaithersburg.

it will be chilly but at least we don't have too much of a breeze for today. forecast overall although it's feeling kind of cool, we will get treated to that sunshine as we ned in toward -- head in toward the afternoon and early evening hours but i forwarded this futurecast forecast model the about 2:00 a.m. we will begin to see then i think the showers light snow showers begin to develop off toward the west. again we're watching carefully that rain/snow mix. it depends how far south that tracks. it looks like at this point most of the snow will be north and west of the beltway and we're forecasting about 1 to 2 inches from the beltway north. and looking at 3 inches in the panhandle of maryland. the goddens is very minor event and we should be through it fairly quickly by the afternoon evening hours looking great. skies clear and we start the dry out. then great forecast on sunday. sunny and dry but much more chilly as we head into the workweek. highs for today, about 43 to 44 degrees for the city center.

we'll see 42 around reagan national -- around andrews. and definitely looking at the winds out of the north for the remainder of today. tonight's going to be very, very cool. we're down into the 0s feeling -- 30s feeling like the 20s: tomorrow we barely make it to the 30s. yellow for tomorrow because of the snow showers and green for today. and then it will be brisk on sunday for the game if you're headed out to the stadium dress accordingly. temperatures will be in the upper 30s by day. down to the freezing mark by kickoff at 8 : 30 and then feeling like the 20s for the end of the game. stay with us, we are cooking up something scrumptious in the kitchen right after this.

located in the penn quarter at 427 11th street northwest. italian fine dining. only the best. let me tell you what he's preparing. i'm going to try and read this. pastrami style butter poached maine lobster, roasted moe say yak caviar, creme fraiche and red ribbon sorre lle. >> welcome. >> welcome. thank you very much. again i guess you said it all. but just to sum it up for our viewers at home, that are very understanding and a quick understanding, we have roasted beets two different kinds. we have gold beets and candy stripes beets. we roast them and slice them very, very thin. >> they're so thin. >> correct and then we put it together. the candy striped beets on top of the gold ones and we create a mosaic. then quickly we dress it. crystallized salt and crushed black pepper corn. of course we have a little bit

of the orange dressing we've prepared ahead of time. sprinkle it on top and give it the substance and the taste. now we're going to put a little bit of the chopped of -- chives. these are little substance color. and also taste it's very good. and then the wonderful thing is that in the meantime, we have poached an old lobster tail which we poach it with butter and also we create a spice of pastrami. >> what is that right there? >> oh, this is orange segments. who said the pastrami is only for beef? it's not. we experimented and put a little -- see the medallions over lobster which is poached with the pastrami spices and it smells so good. >> it does smell good. >> ready? no, no. okay next time. now what we're going to have to do? here comes the goodies, put a little bit of creme fraiche, a little bit of taste and --

caviar. russian caviar. see we do a nice cannel. even if it's not perfect and then we going to decorate the dish with sorrelles. it will be citrusy and it gives -- you don't need too much. just a little bit to give it a little bit of a taste. >> thyme putting this recipe on jchayward.com -- i'm putting this recipe on jchayward.com. i'd rather go to the restaurant and have it. >> it's very easy to make, it's beautiful and nice and it presents nice and this is actually a dish that we going to add for the new year's eve menu on monday night. so these are some things that look beautiful. nice. and very easy to make. >> did i sue you use this -- i see you use this? what is this again? >> this is -- with the sticker on top of the coo. >> what is that? >> these are pastrami -- we make a pastrami mix. and then we powder it see. it's a wonderful smell. very aromatic and very light. and then we -- pretty much get a butter in the little pan.
